No. 25 Iowa State pounds Omaha 91-47
December 5, 2016

AMES, Iowa (AP) Iowa State moved the ball and yet again played strong defense.

The result was a surprisingly satisfying win on the heels of two tough losses.

Deonte Burton scored 20 points and the 25th-ranked Cyclones pummeled Nebraska-Omaha 91-47 on Monday night, snapping a two-game losing streak.

Donovan Jackson had 15 for the Cyclones (6-2), who hit 15 of 29 3-pointers and rolled to their third win of 40 or more points this season.

''I thought we did some things better,'' Iowa State coach Steve Prohm said. ''Pace of play. Sharing the basketball, moving the basketball, the ball moving side to side. And defensively, for the majority of the game, I thought we competed.''

Iowa State knew it had to take the Mavericks (4-5) seriously after they stunned Iowa on Saturday. The Cyclones never let Omaha think it had a chance, storming ahead 36-9 after just 12 minutes - with Burton scoring their first 13 points.

''I just took what they were giving me, and it was falling,'' Burton said.

Iowa State, which fell six spots in Monday's AP Top 25 poll but remained ranked for the 61st week in a row, held the Mavs to 28 percent shooting.

The Cyclones, not typically known for their defense, have held three of their last four opponents to 56 points or less.

''We play in a really good league,'' Prohm said, looking ahead to Big 12 play. ''You better guard, and you better play the right way.''

Tra-Deon Hollins had 13 points to lead the Mavs.

THE BIG PICTURE

Iowa State: One of the big issues for Iowa State this season was inconsistent ball movement. That was clearly a focus for coach Steve Prohm in practice after last week's 55-54 home loss to Cincinnati, and the Cyclones had the ball flying around the perimeter from the opening tip. Iowa State had 10 assists on its first 16 baskets.

Omaha: The Mavericks crossed the Missouri River for a road trip against Iowa and Iowa State. They split, having beaten the Hawkeyes 98-89 on Saturday. That's a result any Summit League program would take.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

Ranked teams are supposed to beat low-major teams handily at home. How the Cyclones look in Iowa City will determine if their streak reaches 62 weeks.

THE NUMBERS

Darrell Bowie scored 12 points, including a pair of 3s, for Iowa State. Naz Mitrou-Long had 11 points, five rebounds and three assists and Monte Morris had seven points and nine assists. ... Omaha hit just 5 of 22 from 3-point range. ... Solomon Young returned from a hand injury and scored six points and five rebounds off the bench. His size will be crucial against Iowa, which has depth along its frontline.

ACTION JACKSON

Jackson, a junior college transfer, was expected to be Iowa State's starting point guard this season - but Morris somewhat unexpectedly returned for his senior season. Jackson was spotty at times as a rotation guard, averaging just 3.9 points in his first seven games. Jackson got 23 minutes and made the most of them Monday, adding three assists, three rebounds and a steal without a turnover. ''I don't care who we were playing...he made open shots. He made right decisions,'' Prohm said. ''He bounced back, but that's what good players do.''

HE SAID IT

''I think I'm gaining more confidence by the day,'' Jackson said.

UP NEXT

The Cyclones hit the road to face Iowa on Thursday. The Hawkeyes haven't looked as bad as they've looked this season in years, but those rivalry games tend to be close and intense.

Omaha hosts Montana State on Saturday.

Tuesday’s six-pack

Baseball signings:

— Astros gave Carlos Beltran $16M for one year; they’ve got a really good lineup but who is going to pitch for them?

— Giants signed closer Mark Melancon for four years, $62M.

— Toronto signed utility guy Steve Pearce for $6M or so a year.

— Rich Hill got $48M for three years from the Dodgers

— UConn 52, Syracuse 50— No wins are ugly, but this was not a well-played game.

— St John’s 76, Cal-Northridge 70– Chris Mullein’s Red Storm is 26-46 from the arc in their last two games.

--------------------------

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

13) No one seems to know the whole story but it is difficult to fathom that Cam Newton was suspended for the first series of a game just because he didn’t have a tie on when he was supposed to— there almost has to be more to the story than that, as in the QB challenging the coach’s authority (more than once), and Sunday night, the coach showed who was boss in a very public way.

12) If you care about such things, so far this season, NBA teams playing the second night of a back/back are 39-46 vs spread when facing a team that didn’t play the night before.

11) Until Donald Trump gets sworn into office, the three wealthiest Presidents were: 1) George Washington 2) John Kennedy 3) Andrew Jackson.

10) Seattle Seahawks had 25 undrafted players on their roster Sunday night and only two #1 draft picks- next week it’ll probably be 26 undrafted players, with safety Earl Thomas done for the year with a broken leg.

9) Average clubhead speed for a PGA touring pro golfer: 109 mph. Average clubhead speed for an amateur golfer: 81 mph

8) You could have a bought a ticket to the Colts-Jets game Monday night for as little as $6 online. Parking probably cost five times that.

7) In 1972, Lafayette College had a freshman QB who was pretty good, but quit football to concentrate on his baseball career. You may have heard of him; Joe Maddon, now the world champion Cubs’ manager.

6) Players in the All-Star Game will be playing the game for $20,000 per man to the winning side, zero to the losing side. Will that be enough to make all of ‘em stick around to the end?

5) Eastern Washington’s basketball team is 6-2 with five straight wins; three of their last four wins came in overtime, with two of those three in double OT.

4) Purdue hired Western Kentucky football coach Jeff Brohm, who favors a wide-open offense. Purdue is a tough place to win in football; maybe he should’ve waited for a better job (Oregon)?

3) This is what college basketball was like before the shot clock; on December 22, 1969, Pete Maravich was 30-31 from the foul line. In one game. With no shot clock, great ball handlers dominated the game as soon as their team got the lead in the second half.

There was a Duke-North Carolina game a few years before the shot clock came in that was 7-0 at halftime. A basketball game was 7-0 at halftime. No bueno.

2) Letting quarterbacks sit and watch ain’t all bad; in his rookie year in the NFL, Tom Brady threw three passes. Three.

1— Two quick Los Angeles Ram notes:

a) When Case Keenum was QB this season, they converted 37.6% of their third down plays, not bad; in three games with Jared Goff under center, LA is 5-35 (14.3%) on third down. Of course, it would be nice if Goff’s receivers would catch the ball now and then; his first INT in Foxboro was a perfect pass that hit Lance Kendricks right in the hands but was tipped to a Patriot defender.

b) Rams’ senior executive Kevin Demoff is the son of agent Marvin Demoff. One of Marvin Demoff’s clients is Jeff Fisher. Oy.

Arkansas is #33 experience team; they’re 6-1, with only loss by 14 at Minnesota, its only road game. Hogs have beaten Arlington/Ft Wayne two of the country’s best mid-majors. Arkansas is forcing turnovers 20.8% of the time. AAC road underdogs are 6-7 vs spread; SEC home favorites are 18-19.

Texas is 4-3 and this is their first true road game; Longhorns are 1-3 vs top 100 teams, with only win over Alabama- they lost to Northwestern-Colorado-Arlington. Longhorns lost to Michigan by 6 LY, when Wolverines made 14-25 on arc and scored 1.26 ppp, a huge number. Wolverines are 2-2 vs top 100 teams, losing last one at home to Va Tech after they led by 10 with 8:03 left. Michigan is 359 experience team playing 4th-slowest pace in country. Big X road underdogs are 7-3 away from home; Big 14 home favorites are 19-20.

Pearl Harbor twinbill finds Princeton a long way from home. Tigers are 1-3 vs #11 schedule (all D-I games on road); their only D-I win is over #309 Lafayette, a stiff. Princeton lost by 9 at BYU, 11 at VCU. Cal Bears are thin because of lot of injury issues; they’re 6-1 with only loss to San Diego State in Sacramento, their only top 100 game. Cal isn’t shooting ball well, isn’t deep and they play Seton Hall tomorrow. Princeton’s offense is hard to defend. Ivy League underdogs are 10-11 vs spread; Pac-12 favorites are 9-8 away from home.

Seton Hall is 5-2, 4-0 vs teams outside top 200, with three of four wins by 20+ points. Pirates won by 8 at Iowa in their only true road game. Seton Hall is shooting 57.1% inside arc, only 64.6% on foul line- they start four juniors who won Big East tourney LY. Hawai’i doesn’t leave home until Jan 5; they’re 4-3 vs schedule #350. Rainbows are totally building after winning Big West tournament LY, then going on probation for this season. Big East favorites are 11-9 away from home; Big West underdogs are 13-22 vs spread.

Purdue is 6-2 with losses to Louisville/Villanova both top 10 teams- their best win was over #106 Auburn in Cancun. Boilers have good big men but one of their better guards Albrecht is banged up; still, Purdue is shooting 43.3% on arc (#5). Arizona State plays #52 tempo but doesn’t sub much; they’re 0-3 vs top 100 teams, losing by 19-8-46 (Kentucky) points. Hurley is from Jersey City and this game is in NYC, so he’ll have some support. Big 14 favorites are 6-6 vs spread away from home; Pac-12 underdogs are 6-14.

Pretty good week for Duke’s team; NYC tonight, Las Vegas Saturday. Blue Devils are slowly getting healthier; they’re 3-1 vs top 100 teams, with wins by 10-10-9 points and 2-point loss to Kansas- their first true road game is New Year’s Eve. Florida is 7-1 with four top 100 wins; their loss was by 5 to Gonzaga in Orlando. Gators are forcing turnovers 24.4% of time; curious to see how they do vs young but talented Blue Devils. Florida is #62 experience team. ACC favorites are 17-15 away from home; SEC underdogs are 11-12.

Marshall is #56 experience team playing tempo #5; they’re 0-2 on road, losing by 9 at Eastern Kentucky, by 41 at Ohio State- they’re 5-0 at home, but only top 200 team they’ve beaten is #93 Ohio U. Chattanooga is #2 experience team that forces turnovers 24.4% of time; Mocs are 1-2 vs top 200 teams, losing by 6 to Arkansas State, 40 to UNC- they did upset Tennessee in Knoxville. UTC is shooting only 30% on the arc. SoCon home favorites are 5-1 vs spread; C-USA road favorites are 17-11.

Fort Wayne won’t sneak up on anyone since they beat Indiana last month; Mastodons are 1-2 in true road games, losing by 9 at Arkansas, 18 at Illinois State- they won by 4 at Austin Peay. Fort Wayne is #87 experience team playing #56 tempo; they’re shooting 38.3% on arc, have #54 eFG% in country. Notre Dame is 8-0 and plays Villanova Saturday; Irish have three top 100 wins, by 6-4-14 points- they have #15 eFG%, making 42.9% on arc. Summit League road underdogs are 13-18 vs spread. ACC home favorites are 19-15 vs spread.

Super 'Nova Wildcats

The defending national champion Villanova Wildcats ascended to the top spot in the AP Top 25 and Coaches' Poll, sitting at 8-0 SU on the season. While they have been winning, they're struggling a bit against the number, going just 2-2 ATS over the past four, and 3-3 ATS over the past six. They host cross-city rival La Salle at the Palestra Tuesday night, an Explorers team which is 3-0 SU and 1-0 ATS over the past three while averaging 87.0 points per game (PPG). The 'under' is 7-3 in the past 10 meetings in this series, with the favorite 3-0-1 ATS in the past four. Villanova will also face Notre Dame on a neutral court before a date with Temple next Tuesday.

Powerhouse Bruin

The UCLA Bruins are fresh off a victory at Rupp Arena in Lexington against the previously unbeaten Kentucky Wildcats, as freshman Lonzo Ball continues to be the real deal. UCLA is nipping at the heels of Villanova for the top spot in the rankings. Not only is UCLA winning, but they have covered six in a row. UCLA will have a full week to rest before they host the Michigan Wolverines at Pauley Pavilion. The Wolverines enter the new week with wins in just two of their past four, and they have failed to cover each of their past two.

Bearing Down

The Baylor Bears won a battle of Top 10 teams against Xavier, blowing them out 76-61 for another cover. The Bears have covered five straight, and they ran their record to 8-0 with impressive wins over Louisville, Michigan State and Oregon already. After a taxing out-of-conference schedule early on, Baylor will take it easy now until conference play starts, facing the likes of Southern, Jackson State, John Brown and Texas Southern until Dec. 30 when they head to Oklahoma.

Bedeviled

The Duke Blue Devils coasted to a 39-point win against visiting Maine over the weekend, taking a break from a taxing early-season schedule. Duke already has wins against Top 25 teams Michigan State and Rhode Island, although they also had a loss on a neutral-site court against Kansas. The Blue Devils are struggling against the number going 3-4 ATS in their past seven games. Duke has been popular at the betting window, with the 'under' going 7-1 in their past eight games. Duke will face Florida on a neutral-site court Tuesday for the first meeting between these schools in 15 1/2 years. Florida is 0-7 ATS in their past seven games as an underdog, and 0-5-1 ATS in their past six neutral-site games as a 'dog. Duke has struggled on neutral-site courts, too, going 2-10 ATS in their past 12 while posting a dismal 5-11 ATS mark in their past 16 games overall.

Going, Going...Gonzaga

The Bulldogs will host Washington at 11 p.m. ET Wednesday night at McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane, as these two Evergreen State rivals battle for the second time in two seasons. It was Gonzaga winning 80-64 last Nov. 25, as the Huskies shot just 25.7 percent from the floor. Washington is just 3-8 ATS in their past 11 non-conference battles, and 1-4 ATS in their past five road outings. Gonzaga, on the other hand, has covered 10 of their past 13 games overall, five of their past seven at home, and eight of their past 10 against teams with a straight-up winning record. The 'Zags have dominated this series against the number, covering five in a row, with the favorite cashing in four of those games.

Other Teams to Watch

Temple has fired out to a 6-1 ATS mark in seven games this season with the 'over' 4-1 in the past five. They will host George Washington Wednesday before a neutral-site battle with DePaul next Saturday. ... Providence picked up an impressive win over Rhode Islands Dec. 3 despite entering as a 3 1/2-point underdog. The Friars have recorded four straight covers. Providence is popular at the betting window for totals, too, as the 'under' is 7-1 in eight games overall. ... If you like to bet smaller schools, bet against Sacramento State. They're 0-6 ATS so far this season with a road game at South Dakota coming up Saturday. The Coyotes of USD are an impressive 6-2 ATS so far this season. ... Staying in California, UCSB has been awful so far. They're 0-5 SU/0-4 ATS against Division I teams, and they have been within 14 points in just one of those five outings. ... Indiana State sits with a 6-1 ATS mark through seven games, while the 'under' is 4-1 in their past five. They have a big measuring stick game against Butler Wednesday night. ... Jacksonville State of the Ohio Valley Conference has covered five straight games heading into their road game at Louisiana-Monroe Saturday. ULM has dropped five of their past six games overall.

Tuesday's Tip Sheet
December 6, 2016

The 2016 Jimmy V Classic will once again take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City tonight. Let’s take a look at both of the matchups…

**Arizona State vs. Purdue**

-- As of early this morning, most betting shops had Purdue (6-2 straight up, 3-3 against the spread) installed as an 11.5-point favorite with a total of 156.

-- Purdue is ranked fifth in the nation in 3-point shooting, knocking down 43.3 percent of its launches from behind the line. The Boilermakers are 27th in field-goal percentage (49.5%).

-- Matt Painter’s team is led by sophomore forward Caleb Swanigan, who is averaging 17.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. He’s making 59.5 percent of his shots from the field and 63.6 percent from 3-point range. Isaac Haas, a 7’2” junior center, is averaging 14. 8 points and 4.9 rebounds per contest.

-- Purdue owns a 3-1 spread record in four games as a double-digit ‘chalk.’ The Boilermakers are off a 90-56 win over Morehead State on Saturday as 19.5-point home favorites. All five starters were in double figures led by freshman guard Carsen Edwards, who had 16 points and five assists. Swanigan added 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists compared to just one turnover.

-- Arizona State (5-3 SU, 2-5 ATS) bounced back from a 115-69 loss to Kentucky in the Bahamas by blasting UNLV 97-73 as a seven-point home favorite. Shannon Evans, a transfer from Buffalo who followed Bobby Hurley to Tempe, led the Sun Devils with 28 points, five rebounds and four assists. He knocked down 5-of-8 attempts from downtown. Torian Graham, another former Bull who came to ASU with Hurley, had 22 points, five boards and three assists against the Runnin’ Rebels. Junior guard Tra Holder finished with 20 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

-- ASU played three games in Orlando at the Tire Pros Invitational, losing twice. The Sun Devils took an 82-63 beatdown from No. Iowa in the first round before bouncing back to beat Tulane, 80-71. They failed to cover as 10-point favorites against the Green Wave. Finally on Nov. 20, Davidson beat ASU 68-60 as a three-point favorite.

-- ASU is 0-2 both SU and ATS an underdog so far this season.

-- Hurley’s team is led by Holder, who is averaging 18.5 points per game. Graham (17.2 PPG) is hitting 42.4 percent for 3-point land and is making 91.7 percent of shots from the free-throw line. Evans (17.0 PPG) has a 37/19 assists-to-turnovers ratio and has been good on 42.6 percent of his launches from downtown.

-- The ‘over’ is 6-2 overall for the Sun Devils after cashing in their last three outings.

-- The ‘over’ is 4-2 overall for Purdue.

-- Tip-off on ESPN is slated for 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

**Florida vs. Duke**

-- These schools haven’t met since the Sweet 16 of the 2000 NCAA Tournament when Florida rolled to an 87-78 win as a 4.5-point underdog. The fifth-seeded Gators took out No. 1 seed Duke behind 15 points from freshman point guard Brett Nelson. Mike Miller had 10 points and nine rebounds at the Carrier Dome, where UF would smash Oklahoma State and Doug Gottlieb two days later on its way to the national-title game. Just 15 months before when Miller, Udonis Haslem and Teddy Dupay were freshmen, Duke pounded UF by a 116-86 count as a 20.5-point favorite.

-- As of early this morning, most books had (Duke 8-1 SU, 4-4 ATS ) installed as a 6.5-point favorite with a total of 139.5.

-- Duke has been dealing with injuries galore all season. Mike Krzyzewski’s club still hasn’t had freshman Harry Giles yet due to a knee injury that’s had him out for an entire year. Giles, who is expected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, practiced against contact for the first time on Dec. 2. Nevertheless, most indications are that he’s another week or two away from playing. Two other elite freshmen, center Marques Bolden and forward Jayson Tatum, just made their collegiate debuts.

-- With Bolden and Tatum available, Coach K gave Grayson Allen (ankle) and freshman guard Frank Jackson the night off in Saturday’s 94-55 win over Maine as a 37.5-point home favorite. Luke Kennard led the way with 35 points and eight rebounds on 11-of-16 shooting from the field. Kennard hit 4-of-9 from 3-point range. Amile Jefferson produced 20 points, nine boards, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Tatum played 20 minutes, contributing 10 points and eight boards. Bolden logged 12 minutes of action, finishing with seven points, five rebounds and one block.

-- Coach K has led Duke to a 28-10 record in 38 career games at MSG during his tenure. The Blue Devils were at this venue on Nov. 15 when they took their only defeat of the year, losing 77-75 to Kansas as two-point favorites. Kennard had 22 points, five boards and five assists in the losing effort. Allen scored 12 points but was 4-of-15 from the field. Jefferson had 12 points but committed seven turnovers before fouling out.

-- Duke has a quality home win over Michigan State (78-69) and quality neutral-court scalps over Rhode Island (75-65) and Penn State (78-68).

-- Florida (7-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) is leaving the Sunshine State for the first time. The Gators are No. 3 in the RPI Rankings based on their stellar strength of schedule that’s ranked 10th in the nation. They’ve played various games in Jacksonville, Lakeland, Orlando and Tampa.

-- Florida has excellent wins over Seton Hall, Miami and St. Bonaventure, in addition to better-than decent victories over Mercer and Florida Gulf Coast, a pair of mid-major programs that have recently won games during the NCAA Tournament. The Gators took their only loss against Gonzaga (77-72) in a game they led at halftime.

-- Mike White’s team is coming off a 91-60 win at North Florida in a non-lined affair in Jacksonville last Thursday. Chris Chiozza led the way with 16 points, nine assists, four rebounds, three steals and only one turnover. Justin Leon drained three 3-pointers in a 13-point effort, while Canyon Barry had 12 points and four rebounds off of the bench.

-- Florida has excellent size and athleticism. UF ranks 14th nationally in forcing turnovers and is eighth in blocked shots. The Gators are deep with seven players averaging at least 6.8 points per game. KeVaughn Allen, a true sophomore 2-guard from Arkansas, leads the team with a 12.4 PPG average. Canyon Barry, a senior grad transfer who is the youngest son of NBA legend Rick Barry, is scoring at a 12.1 PPG clip.

-- Florida junior center John Egbunu has a team-high 19 blocks through eight games. He’s averaging 9.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Devin Robinson, a true junior who provides length and hops, is averaging 11.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting at a 54.8 percent clip.

-- The ‘under’ is 4-2 overall for UF.

-- The ‘under’ is 7-1 overall for Duke. Going back to last season, the Blue Devils have seen the ‘under’ go 20-6 in their last 26 games.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 30 minutes after the conclusion of the opener on ESPN.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Jalen Brunson scored 26 points and Josh Hart had 21 to help No. 1 Villanova hold off La Salle 89-79 on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats (9-0) failed to dominate in their first game of the season as the top-ranked team in the country. The national champions led La Salle (4-3) by only single digits late in the game and played little like the team that had steamrolled to the top.

Coach Jay Wright had worried that Villanova's ascension to No. 1 would give the Explorers a little more incentive to go out and knock off the champs.

La Salle almost came through at the famed Palestra.

Johnnie Shuler and Pookie Powell made late 3-pointers that pulled the Explorers to 77-70. La Salle, which has never defeated a No. 1 team, got more late help from long range when Jordan Price popped a 3 that made it a four-point game. Powell scored 27 points.

No. 3 KANSAS 105, UMKC 62

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Frank Mason scored 30 points to match his career high, Devonte Graham and Josh Jackson also had big games and Kansas rolled over Missouri-Kansas City to give coach Bill Self career win No. 600.

Jackson had 19 points, 12 rebounds and five assists, while Graham was 6 of 8 from beyond the arc and finished with 18 points as the Jayhawks (8-1) allowed Self to empty his bench early again.

He became the ninth-fastest coach to reach 600 wins, just behind Phog Allen, whose name adorns Kansas' building. The former Oral Roberts, Tulsa and Illinois coach is 394-84 with the Jayhawks, and 212-9 at Allen Fieldhouse.

Of course, their game against UMKC (6-4) was essentially over the moment the contract was signed.

LaVell Boyd had 17 points for the Roos, who have never beaten Kansas in seven tries.

No. 5 DUKE 84, No. 21 FLORIDA 74

NEW YORK (AP) - Amile Jefferson had career highs of 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead Duke over Florida in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Luke Kennard scored 29 points and freshman Jayson Tatum added 22 for the Blue Devils (9-1), whose only loss was to Kansas on this same court in the Champions Classic in November.

Twice in the final 8 minutes the Gators (7-2) got within seven points but both times Kennard scored to hold off Florida, once with a 3-pointer and again with a long layup off a steal.

The 6-foot-9 Jefferson, who also blocked four shots, was 11 for 14 from the field. Kennard went 11 of 16, including 5 for 7 from 3-point range.

Kevaughn Allen led Florida with 21 points.

No. 14 VIRGINIA 76, EAST CAROLINA 53

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Kyle Guy scored 13 points to lead five Virginia players in double figures, and the Cavaliers used strong perimeter shooting to beat East Carolina.

Virginia (8-1) had little trouble bouncing back from Saturday's loss to then-No. 25 West Virginia. After trailing 16-15 with 9:26 remaining in the first half, the Cavaliers ended the period on a 27-4 run.

The spurt included seven straight made 3-pointers, with three coming from Guy. The Cavaliers finished 9 of 21 from beyond the arc, taking advantage of East Carolina's 2-3 zone.

London Perrantes added 12 points and five assists for Virginia.

East Carolina (7-3) was led by Jeremy Sheppard's 17 points.

No. 18 PURDUE 97, ARIZONA ST. 64

NEW YORK (AP) - Isaac Haas and Vincent Edwards were both 6 of 9 from the field and had 16 points as Purdue dominated Arizona State in every phase in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Purdue, which has won six of seven, took command with a 26-2 run that gave the Boilermakers a 35-12 lead. During the spurt, Purdue scored both inside and out while the Sun Devils (5-4) missed 12 of 13 shots and the Boilermakers (7-2) outrebounded Arizona State 16-5.

Arizona State finished the first half 1 of 11 from 3-point range, one game after matching the school record with 18 3s against UNLV. The Sun Devils were 4 for 26 for the game on 3s and 24 of 67 overall (24 of 67).

Ryan Cline had 15 points for Purdue, and Basil Smotherman had 13. The Boilermakers finished 15 of 27 from 3-point range and shot 59.4 percent overall (38 of 64).

Shannon Evans II led the Sun Devils with 16 points.

No. 20 ARIZONA 79, UC IRVINE 57

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Dusan Ristic and Lauri Markkanen scored 18 points apiece, and Arizona bounced back from its loss to Gonzaga by beating outmanned UC Irvine.

Ristic, who was two points shy of his career high and grabbed 10 rebounds, scored 14 in the first half. Markkanen had 13 in the second.

The Wildcats (7-2) pulled away in the final 6 1/2 minutes of the first half and never were threatened again.

Jaron Martin scored 12 points for the Anteaters (4-5).

No. 23 NOTRE DAME 87, IPFW 72

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Bonzie Colson had his sixth straight double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, leading Notre Dame past Fort Wayne.

Steve Vasturia scored 21 points for the Fighting Irish (9-0), off to their fastest start in coach Mike Brey's 17 seasons - and the school's best since opening 12-0 in 1973.

Fort Wayne native V.J. Beachem added 14 points, Matt Farrell had 12 and Colson hit a career-high three 3-pointers.

Mo Evans scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half to lead Fort Wayne (7-3), which had won six straight - including an overtime upset of then-No. 3 Indiana.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Random bowl game observations

13) Bowl rematch: North Texas went to West Point in October and beat the Cadets 35-18 as a 17-point underdog, Mean Green was +6 in turnovers that day; they were 1-11 last year, are in a bowl for only second time in last 12 years. Army is in its first bowl since 2010. These teams meet in the Dallas Bowl, played in the iconic Cotton Bowl.

12) South Florida is fun to watch; QB Flowers is a dynamic playmaker, especially on scramble plays, but against an SEC defense (lot faster than the typical AAC defense), he could be negated some. USF lost 55-35 to Florida State in September, a team with SEC-like speed. South Carolina won its last four bowl games, but that was with coach Spurrier.

11) Miami Ohio was 0-6, finished 0-6; Baylor was 6-0, finished 6-6. Too bad the powers-that-be couldn’t have hooked them up in a bowl.

Miami will play 5-7 Mississippi State (the 5-7 teams won their bowls LY); Baylor will be playing Boise State in its bowl, with a lame duck coaching staff- Bears hired Temple coach Rhule on Tuesday.

10) South Alabama is playing Air Force in its bowl game; Jaguars beat San Diego State and Mississippi State, but also lost to UL-Monroe and Georgia Southern, so you never know what you’re getting with USA. South Alabama lost 33-28 in its only other bowl game, couple years ago against Bowling Green.

9) New Mexico and Hawaii are playing bowl games on their home fields; is that fun? Would kids rather go somewhere else for a bowl? Lobos’ last four bowls have all been in Albuquerque- they’re 1-4 in their last five bowls.

8) Speaking of bowl travel, was is the worst place to go for a bowl? Anywhere with a beach can’t be considered, so that leaves Boise, Detroit, New York City. In Detroit/NYC, kids probably go to an NBA or NHL game as entertainment, but what do you do in Idaho for fun in December?

7) Idaho is dropping back to I-AA in 2018, so this bowl game has special meaning for them and they won’t mind playing in Boise. Vandals’ QB is Matt Linehan, son of the Dallas Cowboys’ OC. Idaho won five of its last six games (6-0 vs spread).

6) Old Dominion is playing in its first bowl game; Eastern Michigan’s last bowl was in 1987; the Bahamas Bowl is going to be fun. ODU scored 45.8 pts/game in its last four games. EMU covered eight of its last ten games. Both teams will be very happy to be there.

5) BYU-Wyoming used to be conference rivals; other than Utah, no one despises the Cougars more than Wyoming fans. BYU is 8-4, with four losses by a total of 8 points. This should be one of the better bowl games.

4) Indiana fired Kevin Wilson, but not because of their win-loss record; apparently he isn’t a nice guy and some of the players complained, so he is gone and the OC was promoted. Awkward.

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham is 8-1 in bowl games, the best bowl record since Boston College strung together eight straight bowl wins when Tom O’Brien was coach there.

3) TCU has only eight scholarship seniors, so the practices they get before the bowl and then the game itself serve as an early start for next season. Horned Frogs won four of last five bowls, scoring 89 points in last two- they beat Oregon in OT in Alamo Bowl LY.

2) Underdogs covered last four Holiday Bowls, winning three of the four SU; there was a time when Holiday Bowl was famous for high scoring games, so fitting that Mike Leach’s Washington State team will be there. This is third bowl in four years for Coogs, after they went ten years in between bowl appearances. Leach has done a great job reviving the Wazzu program.

1— Florida State-Michigan and USC-Penn State are terrific bowl matchups between traditional powers.

After watching the Showtime reality show on the Seminoles this fall, am curious how they do in this bowl, given a chance to get healthier and then there was the war of words between the two coaches about the satellite camps Harbaugh runs in Florida.

If you’re Penn State coach Franklin, missing out on the playoff is disappointing, but isn’t playing in the Rose Bowl really good and in the long run, couldn’t that help PSU’s recruiting more than a loss to Alabama in the national semifinal?
