Great thread...thanks for all the info.
How about the job situation? Not career jobs, but like part-time jobs? I am almost 54 and thinking about retiring to a foreign country.

Foreigners are not allowed to work here but they can own a bar...just can't be seen working...Thais figure that they can do just about any job that a foreigner can do and foreigners cannot own land or homes....

And other thing...approx how much does it cost to fly over ther and how long does it take? Sorry about the 3 different posts but I keep thinking of new things to ask.

Round trip goes from 850-5000 bucks...depends what airlines and what class you fly...trip takes around 15 hours from the west coast and longer from the east coast...

To be honest the amount of interaction that takes place between people and Thai police here is basically nothing.

Im not worried about it all. The odds of a cop asking to see my passport are the odds of the Cubs winning the World Series.

Get into a beef with a Thai or have an accident in your car...then say hello to the police...there are also highway checkpoints...

I am an Rx lurker and just got to Bangkok a few days ago and have a few weeks to kill here. Any suggestions as to good bars? Not especially looking for hookers but just a place to hang out at night and throw back a drink or 15.

If you get to Pattaya, just PM me...(<)<

I'm stuck in bangkok for a few weeks and then travelling around Thailand once my other friends get here. Not sure if we are going to Pattaya or not but will PM if I go.

To help answer the other questions, the trip cost me $900 round trip from LA and took 17-18 hours. Hot as heck and humid. So far really impressed with the food compared with other non US locales I've been to....if you like thai food, you'll be in heaven.

But what are the odds of getting pulled over at a checkpoint? Cops don't seem to pull anyone over here. I dont have a car, my friends and I take taxis.

I dont think u can compare Phuket and Pattaya. Phuket is beautiful with crystal clear beaches etc, a tropical paradise.

Pattaya is simply a large whore house with rotten beaches. (dont get me wrong, I love Pattaya, and I am sure golf and other activities are fum, but its not a great place to be if you love the ocean).

Viejo, when I was in Phuket I asked about ownership and was told that farang (foreigners) could own homes but not the land they were on. I'm not sure my source was correct though. Have you looked into purchasing a home?

In previous posts it was said that Thai women are easy or are not shy. This is true but people shouldn't think every Thai woman is a whore. Many will go to discos and night clubs and will go home with a man as a part-time job. Most just work their day job.

Also, it was said that Americans are well-liked in Thailand. This is true. However, there is some resentment by local Thai men of Americans with money hanging out with Thai women.

what are some good resorts in phuket?

I stayed at the Hilton Phuket Arcadia which ran $65 per night back in 2006 and again in 2007. It's a little higher now. This was about 10 miles from the nightlife of Patong Beach but that was fine by me since it was $5 one-way to take a taxi.

If you want to stay right on Patong Beach then the Holiday Inn seemed like a nice place to stay although there was a lot of foot traffic in front of the hotel so if you like it quiet make sure to get a room in the back.

There are many, many other nice hotels in Phuket. I would suggest doing a simple search and you might find a better deal.

Foreigners are not allowed to own homes, only condos, and even then there are restrictions.

I remember when i worked at the Sheraton i set my parents up at that resort for $75. (employee rate).

They loved it, they had access to like 5 resorts that were all beside each other. It really is a fantastic place to visit.
