Frank Columbo (Columbo) I have just one more question for you.
Hawkeye Pierce (MASH) The greatest smartass/prangster in tv history
Kojak (Kojak) who love's ya baby!
Archie Bunker (All in the family) Meathead!
Jack Webb (Dragnet) I loved his rants to felons at the end of the show. And his fast old time 40's police talk. "We were working bunko"

I know the show was a huge hit and Italian sport coats, non white T-shirts, white linen pants, and slip-on (sockless) loafers flew off the shelves everywhere. 5 O'clock shadows became mandatory clubing facial looks.

Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett in full regalia starring in the show Miami Vice.

You have a perfect right to pick him as a favorite. In a way the popular today Dr. Gregory House (Brit Hugh Laurie) is a modern day Sonny Crockett only he wields a stethoscope instead of a stainless steel 9MM Glock to get the bad guy with...

1) Buffy Summers (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)
2) Fox Mulder (The X-Files)
3) Admiral Al Calavicci (Quantum Leap)
4) George Costanza aka Art Vandelay (Seinfeld)
5 Tony Soprano (The Sopranos)

I would have liked to add Spike aka William The Bloody to my list but I didn't want to have two actors from the Buffy/Angel franchise to compromise my list.

I skimmed this quickly, no point repeating Archie Bunker, etc.

I'll go for some that aren't top 5, but worthy of mention, or missed....

the entire cast of WKRP

Danny Devito....Taxi

supporting actors on Hogan's Heroes, Jeffersons, A in F.

Coach Taylor From "Friday night Lights"
Jack Bauer
George Costanza
Omar from Wire
Cliff Claven from Cheers

saw a lot of others on lists already tried to mentions some new ones (except George)

I think John Ratzenburger was fantastic on Cheers ! He was the only character that had the Boston accent....fake, but good enough !

I loved when Cliff talked to a woman....and was all toungue-tied......Hi, I'm Cluff Cluben....about all he could get out, then go hide in the bathroom.

Cliff talking to a woman, really makes me LOL, for real !

He reminded me of Jackie Gleason ( almost) .... I brive a duss !
