Why Would the Phoenix Suns Trade Amare for KG?

I watched Amare go for 40 a game against SA two years ago and in game 6 he had 38 this year - this is an offensive team - adding KG does not make the Suns a defensive team.

Woah, Amare is 100x better offensively? You can't be serious. All he can do is dunk, offensive rebound (of which, KG is statistically better) and pick and roll, he has virtually no offensive game beyond that. KG is much, much more well rounded offensively.

If you want to say that Amare may fit better in the Phoenix offensive scheme, that is one thing, but no way is Amare a better offensive player.

It makes them a better defensive team.

The Suns do not have anybody that can guard Duncan right now , and considering Duncan will play 3-4 more years , Phoenix wants and absolutely needs a low post player then can match up with Duncan one on one , Garnett is that person ... The double team will still come , but overall it gives them so many more options when playing against the Spurs ... also Garnett can guard Nowitski , another big man that has given Phoenix fits over the years.

He has a great touch from around the FT line in - it's like he never misses - he works the pick and roll like no one - the only thing he can't do offensively is score with his back to the rim - but the Suns aren't dying to slow the game down anyways - I did not know KG was a defensive force? I will admit Amare sucks on defense and is never in position - now factor in the age difference.

Garnett is soft. He is not the answer to the Suns problems. No way. Plus he is older. Phoenix should not panic. Garnett while a super player is not the answer. My view.

The age, in a vacuum, is an issue. HOWEVER, when taking into account the makeup of this team, the ages of the remaining core of the team, Nash (34), Marion (29 and likely leaving after next season) and Bell (31 in Sept), it is less of an issue. The Suns aren't winning shit with Amare, Diaw, Marcus Banks and Barbosa in 2010-11 and they have already shown they can't win shit with Amare (3 years running now). They have to win when they can, and that is now.

Separating the ages from this discussion, it is a no brainer to me. I would take KG over Amare in a second.

I think the two are very comparable - and the age makes the trade bad for the Suns.

I hate to say this but I side with Seymour on this. A.S. is already a top 10-20 player in the league & he is "still" developing which is quite scary if you think about it. I usually don't care for the dreaded p word potential but he has plenty of upstide still to come. The difference between him & many others with that word is that he has proven he can produce.

I don't disrespect KG's game but he is getting up there & probably has a few years left while A.S. has almost a full career.

KG can match up with duncan which will get phoenix to the finals. Stoudemire did nothing vs. Duncan but sit on the bench in final trouble. KG can do so many more things. He's older, but IMO KG is clearly better. Probably when all said and done top 5 PF of all time.

They, as a team, have also proven they can't beat SA or Dallas. Amare has also proven his defense stinks and is getting no better. Phoe only has so much time to win a title with Nash and Marion on the team, they may or may not do that with KG. However, based on the past three years nothing indicates at all that they will with Amare. KG provides them with tools they don't currently have, a better rebounder, better defender, better team guy, insane will to win and a second crunch time scorer. KG may not be able to carry a bunch of stiffs deep into the playoffs, but he had a monster playoff when they were good with Sprewell and Casell, no reason to think that won't happen again with an even better team.

You guys are acting like KG is Bill Russell. Yes, he is a better defender. Is it enough to make a huge impact, no I dont think so. Especially when the rest of the team plays very little defense.

If I had to choose one player for next season, yes I would pick KG. But I just think Amare has such great potential. Plus, he is still so young.

I hope the trade goes through for KG. He deserved to be on a championship contender.

THE REST OF THE TEAM DOESN'T PLAY DEFENSE? EVER HEAR OF GUYS NAMED BELL AND MARION, TWO OF THE BETTER DEFENDERS IN THE LEAGUE.

What do you mean you hate to agree with me? Sorry I don't like wrestling (the fake wrestling that is - I like real wrestling and MMA) - I don't care much for watching grown men prance around in nut hugging banana pouches while they play fight one another - now what the fuck makes me so dilusional for not enjoying this?

I think KG an excellent player - but top players of all time play in the playoffs - I don't care what team they play on - I love all this regular season BS - Duncan and Shaq's season starts in May - KG cannot be considered top anything of all time until he is a regular deep into the playoffs.

I can understand this trade - the Suns want to try something that might get them over the edge - but their giving up something pretty good too.

Without reading through this entire thread I can very easily answer the original question. KG is WAAAAAAY better than Amare at this stage. It isn't even remotely close. Granted Amare fits well with Nash, but Phoenix would just tweak the way the offense runs. KG better in really every phase of the game, save attacking the rim. Phoenix would be saying, that we have about two years to get a ring and this is how to do it. 10 years of amare down the road with no rings when nash is done will not make up for winning a ring or two now by making the deal. Just because Minny has been out of the spotlight for quite some time, I think people forget how damn good KG really is.

Keep in mind I am not saying that it is highway robbery for Phoenix by any means, just stating why they would do it and I could not blame them. Titles are hard to win and if you are on the verge, you must go for it.

They can beat Dallas easily nowadays & were robbed against the Spurs. What do they do when KG is not what he used to be? They would have traded away one of the best young talents in the league.

EGD,

That simply isn't true, they are 4-4 against Dallas in the regular season the last 2 years (2-2 each season) and lost in the playoffs in 06 4-2, losing by an average of 9.75 ppg. They were 3-7 in the regular season against SAS the last 3 seasons and have lost in the playoffs twice. Admittedly they didn't have Amare and Diaw for a game in this season's playoffs, but they clearly don't have success against these two teams and the main reason is their inability to stop Duncan and Dirk. The two of them destroyed Phoenix in the last two playoff series.

He may be one of the best young talents in the league, but they are getting back someone who is currently better. They are fixing what is probably the #1 issue stopping them from advancing. KG is only 31, they aren't trading for a geriatric Karl Malone like LAL did. He has 3 more elite seasons left.

On a short term basis, this is an upgrade and an upgrade from the one most vital problem area. Their window is short, if this were a young team like the Bulls, maybe you don't do it, but when Nash is done, Phoe is done and Nash will be done before KG. Considering Marion may leave after next season, they may only have 1 season to make a run and, as far as I can tell, they can't get any farther with Amare and they may be able to with KG. IMO, as I said, you can't keep going to battle with the same guys when they have proven for 3 straight years they can't get it done.
