Trent Edwards Released

The Bills have released Quarterback Trent Edwards. Head Coach Chan Gailey will address the media at 3 o'clock.

Kawika Mitchell showing some support for the quarterback on his twitter account (@kawikamitchell) by bringing up the man who Edwards replaced.

"Not sure why buffalobills.com titled their story on Trent "Trent's Record". JP's record was worse. And tension in the locker was a reason??" He later added "I definitely like Fitz at QB but it's key to have a backup with experience. Sure there's a plan behind this. What do u guys think?"

That plan appears to be using last years draft. Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting the team will bring back seventh round pick Levi Brown, who was cut after the final preseason game.

Edwards began the season as the Bills starter but was ineffective in 2 losses and replaced by Ryan Fitzpatrick. Edwards threw for 241 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception in losses to Miami and Green Bay.

Trent was drafted in the third round in 2007 (92nd overall) out of Stanford. That draft wasn't very good to other teams that picked quarterbacks. Oakland took Jamarcus Russel first overall and Brady Quinn went to Cleveland at 22.

Edwards first game came in week three against New England when J.P. Losman was injured in the first quarter. Trent started nine games in his rookie season going 5-4 with 7 td, 8 int and averaged 163 yards passing per game.

The start of 2008 looked as if the Bills had finally found the man to replace Jim Kelly. Edwards led the team to a 4-0 start and there was even MVP talks for the second year player. In the fifth game, he got a concussion via a hard hit from Adrian Wilson that knocked him out of the game early in the first quarter. He returned week six and showed no side effects going 25 of 30 for 261 yards and a touchdown in a 23-14 victory over San Diego.

Edwards fell apart after that game throwing eight interceptions in the next four games (all losses) as the team finished 7-9 on the year thanks to the 2-6 finish.

Trent started the 2009 season but soon gave way to “Captain Checkdown”. Edwards led the team to a 1-4 start and got credit for a win against the Jets week six after he was knocked out in the second quarter with a concussion. He missed the next two games and returned to his starting role in week nine against the Titans. They lost that game 41-17 and Ryan Fitzpatrick finished out the year as starter.

Just posted in the NFL forum that I would love nothing more than for him to be named the starter for the 49ers. The guy has the arm and smarts... the only thing he was missing in Buffalo was the ability to check out more than one option before being sacked.

Constantly ignoring Lee Evans didnt help his cause

Teams either doubled or were physical with Evans at the line to disrupt timing. With a shitty O-line that doesn't give any time to throw, that's about all she wrote for that connection. Check out this Trent Edwards highlight... he's damn near getting sacked on every play. No time to throw.

For the record, I think Trent would be a very smart pickup for somebody in need of a backup.

In fact, I hope the PACKERS make a bid for him.

Trent wasn't the problem, it was the POS offesensive line...I don't think the Bills coaching staff watched game footage of the O line, they are terrible and they need to start shifting people around and send a message to the Oline. Trent isn't a mobile QB at all and that was and is his down fall. He isn't a bad QB and under the right direction i think he could be good.

There's a reason losing teams continue to lose. The Bills had a time where they tried to improve the O-line so I'll at least give them credit for that. That being said, the guys they brought in never worked out at all.

Edwards sucks regardless of the O-Lin

Guys,

I'll agree with you we had / have a shitty o-line, but IMO the concussion he received in Arizona ended his career. He became Mr. Checkdown and is scared out of his mind to stay in the pocket. He has no guts (like I should say that about anybody in the NFL) to hang in the pocket because of that hit.

He had the goods when he was drafted, just one more example of a concussion screwing somebody up.

Buffalo qb situation now vastly improved. Ive seen Edwards have 1 good game and about 5 really bad ones over past year. Fitzharvard looked like an old vet out there yesterday.

Now that I think about it, I forgot about that concussion and your probably right. He became very gun shy. This must be the reason why he would take a sack instead of throwing the ball away. When you throw the ball away under extreme pressure there's always the chance of getting hit without being able to brace yourself/defend your self. He stopped stepping up into the pocket. You could see the difference between Fitzpatrick and Edwards, Fitz stepped right up into the pocket and delivered the ball. When Trent first took over for JP he was a much better QB, more confident and would step right into the pocket and deliver. he was definitely not a long ball guy, but he was effective with short passes. Ultimately, you can't win throwing short passes all day; defenses will and did eat him alive because of his inability to throw the long ball.

There are some classic predictions in this old thread: Brady Quinn will be a star, and Brees has a noodle for an arm.

Jaguars get QB Trent Edwards

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Showing just how frustrated they are with quarterback David Garrard, the Jacksonville Jaguars claimed former Buffalo Bills starter Trent Edwards off waivers Tuesday.
Edwards is expected to sign a contract Wednesday morning and join his new teammates at practice later in the day.

Edwards' base pay is $1.65 million and the Bills already have paid him $291,176. The Jaguars would owe Edwards the balance of that deal.

More from ESPN.com

That the Jaguars put in a waiver claim for Trent Edwards and were awarded the former Bills quarterback does not mark some huge change in their thinking or approach, writes ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky. Blog • Blog network:
AFC South | NFL Nation

The only other team that put in a claim for Edwards was the New York Jets, a source told ESPN Senior NFL Analyst Chris Mortensen, but the Jaguars were awarded the former Bills quarterback on the basis of their 1-2 record.
The Jaguars waived linebacker Alvin Bowen to make room for Edwards on the roster.
The move gives Edwards a fresh start after things went south in Buffalo and provides Jacksonville with a viable option behind Garrard.
Edwards started the first two games for Buffalo this season, completing 29 of 52 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown. He also threw two interceptions and lost both games, prompting coach Chan Gailey to turn to Ryan Fitzpatrick to spark an inept offense.
With Fitzpatrick under center, the Bills managed 374 yards -- more than Edwards mustered in his two starts. Gailey released Edwards on Monday.
Edwards could get a second chance in Jacksonville, especially if Garrard continues to perform as he has the past two weeks.
Garrard threw four interceptions and was benched in a 25-point loss at San Diego. He was even worse Sunday at home, completing 13 of 30 passes for 105 yards and an interception in another 25-point loss to Philadelphia. He also was sacked six times and botched a pitch to Maurice Jones-Drew.
Coach Jack Del Rio said Garrard seemingly lost confidence following the sixth loss in his past seven starts. He also made it clear how he felt about his quarterback's play.
"As long as he's our best option, we'll continue to go with him," Del Rio said Monday.
Those sentiments are not really new. Del Rio and team owner Wayne Weaver challenged Garrard in January. Del Rio called Garrard a "second-tier quarterback," and Weaver said he needed to be more accountable and spend more time working with the team's young receivers.
Garrard responded with what coaches and teammates called his best offseason. He even threw three TD passes in the opener. But poor decisions, bad throws and costly turnovers plagued him the past two weeks.
Jacksonville had few options, too.
Backup Luke McCown replaced Garrard in San Diego, but tore a knee ligament late in the game and was placed on injured reserve. The Jaguars signed 38-year-old Todd Bouman, but went with him only because he spent the 2008 and 2009 training camps with them and knew the offense.
Edwards' arrival could signal the end of Garrard's tenure in Jacksonville.
Garrard signed a six-year, $60 million extension in 2008. It was the richest contract in franchise history and included $18 million guaranteed. It also was a reward for 2007, when Garrard emerged as a legitimate starter, threw 18 TD passes, just three interceptions and led the team to its first postseason victory since 2000.
But Garrard has been mediocre since. He had 15 TD passes and 13 INTs in 2008, and the Jaguars won five games. He had 15 TD passes and 10 INTs last year, and they won seven games. He was sacked 42 times in each season.
Edwards has thrown for 5,739 yards, with 25 TD passes and 27 INTs.
Edwards, a third-round draft pick by Buffalo in 2007, started 32 games for the Bills. He has thrown for 5,739 yards, with 25 TDs and 27 INTs for a 76.8 passer rating.
