IT and The Shining both scared me as a kid. Slasher type movies like the Freddys and Jason types never seemed to scare me much.

Great thread.

The classics: Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw

Most Disturbing: The Hills Have Eyes, 28 Days

But you have to check out Audition..This blew my mind

7. Ōdishon US: Audition; Dir. Takashi Miike, 1999

A lonely Japanese widower whose son is planning to move out of the house soon expresses his sadness to a friend and fellow film producer, who becomes inspired to hold an audition for a non-existent film so that the widower can select a new potential bride from the resulting audition pool. The widower ultimately becomes enamored with and fascinated by one particular young woman, but his first impressions become wrong.

I watched the Exorcist by myself in college one night. I had a basement bedroom in college off campus. No windows... just a brick basement. A roommate had the other side of the basement with some plywood separating us. He was gone and had left a hanging light bulb on. The movie ended about 2 am and I go down to the F'n basement to sleep. I lay down, deciding to leave the hanging bulb on in the other guys area... why not. I just watched the F'n movie and not trying to prove anything to anyone. I am in bed for maybe 10 minutes and the damn bulb burns out. I have no idea where I found the courage to stay in the basement, but I did. Not a good night's rest to say the least.

Jaws really is great because it takes a common environment and a real life monster. It's not a stretch from reality, although shark attacks are extremely rare.

Probably was too young to watch When a Stranger Calls

A bit like jaws, it's a realistic environment. Alone in a dark house...

"Hostel" movies were especially disturbing because the events were so plausible as there were no monsters, just demented sadistic killers.

Yeh I felt a bit awkward after that one ended, probably because of the attitude of the movie. You know this kind of stuff has to go happen somewhere though.

but when the chick walked out of the t.v., freaked the shit out of me

In the Japanese version I always got a shiver down my spine when the girl came on tv. Wasn't scary, but nothing else have ever done that to me.

I completely agree

I think I was around nine when I saw Silver Bullet...my parents didn't let me watch much as far as R rated films go so when I saw this it ruined me for weeks

I was well into my teens when I saw Candyman. Just so happens, at the exact point when Candyman jumps out during scene, our door to the pool area flies open. The door was located right next to the tv so everyone in the room jumped and screamed. Funny as hell to think back on it.

Hostel.

If you haven't seen it.....I would suggest NOT watching it.

It could really happen! It was freakin' brutal! I woke up for a week saying to myself, "That shit could really happen!"
