I also use Spysweeper and recommend it highly. Have had it for less than one year.
Use Google and check anti-spyware reviews - Spysweeper is the highest rated from most websites' reviews.

(AdAware free version does not run in real time (in the background all the time) which Spysweeper does).

Another plus is SpySweeper offers free phone support for the year (and for every year you renew it).

I would NEVER buy anything from Norton or McAfee - phone support is limited or non-existent. So if there's a problem with their software or their instructions you have to pay them to find out what's wrong. RIPOFF.

For anti-virus I recommend Trend Micro PC-cillin. Also free phone support for the year (and each year it's renewed), and highest rated at many website's reviews.
I'm starting my 2nd year with this - I got the 2nd year free via 2 rebates that were offered in a special.
I use Bit defender 9 standard as my anti virus and it is rated #1 by many sources. They also offer free support via phone or live chat for a year. I got my subscription in March at Hermanstreet, and they threw in a free 90 day subscription to spysweeper.

Spy Sweeper has many more definitions (spyware that it looks for) than Spybot and AdAware.

I have Spybot and AdAware on my computer from before I got Spy Sweeper - If I run them now, generally Spybot finds nothing, and AdAware finds one tracking cookie (real player) which Spy Sweeper didn't.
But I think that's a matter of a different opinion of what a tracking cookie is.

Agree that Webroot Spysweeper is the best out there. Its like $20 for a year, or you can get it for free on OiNK.

WharfRat - Not familiar with the site. Just googled and found http://oink.me.uk/. Is that what you're referring to? Can't see anything there to download.

SpySweeper 5.0 is a disaster.
Had to use RESTORE to get goiong.
A week and no respone from Webroot.

Do a google and take a look at how bad it is everywhere.

You are 100% correct. I had one hell of a time getting rid of the trial version. It downloaded ok---did all the stuff it was supposed to do and THEN said....not compatable with Windows 98. What a joke!

As for as 150,000 or whatever spyware fingerprints---that's a advertizing gimmick. I dislike their product!

When dealing with Trojans, "Hijack This" is the best way to go-but you have to know what you're doing, or you can really cause yourself some problems.

I personally use different anti-spyware programs to clean up: Ad-Aware, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and CWShredder for CoolWebSearch. But I only have Avast and Ewido running in the background.

It is also recommended to check for spywares/adwares in safe mode.

Castle Cops is an excellent site for security and all pc problems. Here's a list of Anti-Spyware pgms with comments from that site:

To add to TTinCO's suggestion, you can use Hijack This to get a report and show it in a thread in Castle Cops or some other forum where someone more qualified will tell you what you can safely delete.

To be honest, very few programs today work with Windows 98. I have had no problems with Spysweeper 5.0.

I have Windows XP Home. I have the newest Spysweeper (just did "Check for Program Updates" and I'm up to date), and no problems at all.

Spyware Doctor
Does anyone use this. I just downloaded and it seems to work well on my older machine (trial version anyway).

Spysweeper (even their older version) slowed my computer down.

I use Adware and Spy Sweeper like everyone else. Though I just upgraded to Spy Sweeper 5.0 and I think it was crashing my computer. I uninstalled it and so far it hasn't abrubtly shut down my computer. Hoping to reinstall it and work properly.

I have XP and have finally deleted SpySweeper - kept getting an error message every time I turned on the computer.

After a week still no response from support.

Never buy this product.

One thing people who feel they're having a problem with Spysweeper can do is verify it with Windows Task Manager.

With Windows XP, right click on the taskbar (bottom bar) and left click on "Task Manager", then click on the "Processes" tab.

I have Spysweeper running. There are 2 Spy Sweeper processes you will find listed, WRSSDK.exe, and SpySweeper.exe.

Under "CPU", I see 00 for both - although they are running in the background, they are using virtually none of my processor.

To the right of "CPU" is "Memory Usage".

They are using a combined 4% of my computer's memory.

Not sure why some of you are having a problem with it, although someone pointed out that Windows 98 is not compatible with most of today's anti-spyware systems.

Did I read where someone said Firefox takes up a lot more system resources than IE?

By the end of the year, Microsoft will stop offering support or designing security patches for Windows 98. I'm sure this will be a bigger problem for you as time goes by.
