Wednesday comp play is the Nats over the Phils.

In case you have been asleep this month, the Philadelphia Phillies have forgotten how to win baseball games.

Monday they lost 5-3 to the Nationals. Last night they were snake bit in a 5-4 setback, as the Nats have now won their last 3 games and a modest 5 of 8.

Philadelphia meanwhile, has dropped 8 of their last 10 as they are starting to drift out of contention for the division crown, and are looking up at a few teams in the Wold Card standings as well.

Both Gio Gonzalez and Jake Arrieta have not picked up a win in quite some time, and while both may not pick up the win tonight, I think it is pretty clear that right now the Phillies have an aversion to tasting victory.

I will take my chances and play the Nationals to get the sweep.

For Wednesday, let's play the Nationals and the Phillies to get offensive in their series finale with struggling Gio Gonzalez and struggling Jake Arrieta on the mound.

Last night's game slipped Over the total with Scherzer and Nola on the hill, so to see tonight's game land Over would not be a surprise. Gonzalez sports an ERA over 8 for his last 3 starts, and 2 of the 3 have landed Over the total, while Arrieta sports an over 5 ERA for his last 3 starts.

The Nats have played Over the total in 7 of their last 11 games, while the Phils have been Over the price in 6 of their last 9 games contested.

With a couple of scuffling pitchers mound-bound for Wednesday, let's play this one Over the total.

My Bonus Play for Wednesday night is on the Under in the Arizona Diamondbacks- San Francisco Giants battle at AT&T Park. This will be pitchers' duel, just as we've seen in the first two games, both won by the Giants the last two nights, 2-0 and 1-0.

Since every MLB wager on a run line or total auto-lists pitchers, I want you to be sure the two pitchers on your ticket, when making this play, are Zack Godley and Dereck Rodriguez. If they are not the pitchers of record when making your play, disregard this play.

Godley, who already has a career-high 13 victories, will be looking to avenge his last two starts, during which he's given up 11 runs over 10 innings. A loss to Seattle on Friday was his first in seven weeks, since a 9-6 defeat to the Giants on July 1, so you can believe he'll be at his best.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez looks to maintain his National League Rookie of the Year candidacy, which seems to accelerate every time he steps to the rubber. He has allowed no more than two runs in each of his last nine outings, and is 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA in his last three starts.

Play this one low, as these two teams limit the runs for a third straight night.

I'm playing the Baltimore Orioles against the Toronto Blue Jays tonight, and I don't want you listing pitchers, as it will not matter.

That's because Trey Mancini has been powering the Baltimore offense as of late, hitting .333 with nine hits and two home runs in the past week.

Chris Davis leads the Orioles with 71 hits on the season, while Jonathan Villar has 11 hits and is batting .282 over his past 10 games for Baltimore.

The Blue Jays haven't been able to get any offense going and come into this one mired in a three-game losing streak.

Take Baltimore in this one.

MLB(917) Toronto Blue Jays at (918) Baltimore Orioles
THE PLAY: Total Under 9.0 (-103)
List Borucki & Cobb

My Baseball Totals System is a combination of relevant statistical data, history involving similar games, and current market data. A play is made when enough of these factors align. The size of the wager is determined by a combination of how many of these factors align, how much value is perceived, and how confident I am about the play.

This is a weird subset within my MLB Totals System wherein a specific set of parameters all point to the Over, yet these games have gone UNDER at a very good rate.

My personal take: Orioles hitters have never faced Ryan Borucki, which should give the Toronto lefty a nice early-game edge. Baltimore owns MLB's worst wRC+ AND OPS against lefties. Blue Jays hitters have had little success against Alex Cobb (.238 BA & .669 OPS in a combined 117 PA). We also get Doug Eddings behind the plate, and Eddings shows one of the strongest UNDER biases among all MLB umpires.

MLB(923) Miami Marlins at (924) Boston Red Sox
THE PLAY: Total Under 10.0 (-103)
Interleague Preview and Free Pick: Red Sox vs Marlins

Miami and Boston take Fenway Park grass on Wednesday night in an interleague contest between two teams in very different situations. The best record in baseball is owned by Boston while Miami is a mere 22-44 on the road and are battling the San Diego Padres for the worst winning percentage on the senior circuit. Interleague Preview and Free Pick: Red Sox vs Marlins.

Game Preview
The Sox and the Fish are scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. ET first pitch at historic Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts tonight.

Vegas Rotation: (923) Miami Marlins at (924) Boston Red Sox
Starting Pitchers: Marlins Trevor Richards (3-7, 4.23 ERA) opposes Red Sox David Price (14-6, 3.50)
Venue: Fenway Park
Line: Boston Red Sox -300, 10
TV Broadcast: FS Florida (Miami), NESN (Boston)

Miami Marlins
Offensively the Fish have been punch-less against left-handed pitching in 2018. Miami is slashing a National League worst5 .234/.30/.350with an OPS of just .659 versus southpaws. Richards makes his 20th start of the season tonight and is coming off a win over the New York Yankees in his last turn. Richards worked 5.1 innings against the Bronx Bombers a week ago tonight allowing three hits and two runs while walking three and striking out nine.

Richards has not seen fortune in his batted ball luck this summer. His 4.23 ERA and 1.42 WHIP come along with a solid .258 batting average against. There is not only a lot to like about the young right hander but his statistical positives are numerous. Richards has struck out 23 percent of the batters he has faced, owns a 31 percent O-swing rate and has kept the ball in the yard this season with a 0.56 HR/9 despite being fly ball heavy with a near 40 percent hard contact rate.

Richards standout stat is his success against left-handed hitters which he has limited to a .191 batting average against as well as a .282 slugging percentage. He has a plus-changeup that opposing hitters have successful hit in play at a .162 batting average mitigates his hard contact numbers this season.

Boston Red Sox
Price has found his mojo in August. The southpaw owns a 1.33 ERA while striking out over 30 percent of the hitters he has faced. In addition he has allowed a mere .177 average against this month. Combine these ace number against a Marlin lineup that has zero to no success against left-handed pitching and Fenway Park is the venue of a battle of pitching tonight.

Veteran umpire Scott Barry is pitcher-friendly. And the veteran ump is scheduled to wear the vest tonight and grade both Richards and Price's pitches. Barry ranks in the Top-10 with strike out to walk ratio (2.76) among active umpires. Furthermore he has had seasons in which he has choreographed twice as many unders as overs with his latest coming in 2016 when he closed the regular season with an 8-15 (over-to-under) record. Barry has not had more over than under the total finals since 2013.
