The US women's soccer team have been criticized before for not being good sports. New Zealand's coach had a few choice words for their choreographed victory dances.
Now they are being called out for the shirts they chose to wear on the field after taking the gold from Japan in a close 2-1 bout,
The ladies had some Nike T-shirts (pictured above) that read "Greatness has been found" that were made for them in case they won. After the final second ticked away, they donned the shirts and ran across the field carrying American flags.
Sports writer Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times wrote on his Twitter account:
Jerrard Peters, a soccer reporter for TheScore.com, Tweeted on his account:
Who's to say what's wrong or right in this situation? The Japanese women's soccer team handled their loss with an admirable amount of dignity and both teams seem to have a great deal of respect for each other and that's not to say they would or wouldn't have done the same if they beat the US. Besides, it's not like Team USA pulled a Randy Moss by mooning the opposing team's fans or did anything that Terrell Owens has ever done as an athlete.
After all, it's just a game. Let the ladies enjoy their victory. They've earned it.
