Uber/Lyft seem to be approved in Las Vegas now... good or bad?

I don't know much about either of them. Both companies are apparently avoiding fees/regulations because they bribed (IE lobbied and donated, they are funding a UNLV med school I guess) enough people to have them listed as a tech company instead of a transportation company. Looks like the road is cleared. What does this mean for taxi companies in town? I know a few of the taxi companies have apps too. Could they get re-branded as tech companies now to avoid fees/regulations? Just trying to sort this stuff out. Thanks for any replies.

I'm all for competition after having paid almost $90 for a cab ride home from the airport. Pretty sketchy that they are considered a tech company instead of a transportation company though. Someone got paid.

its what they argue in every state...

which i mean they are a transportation company but its the technology that separates them. i mean it's clearly transportation but its not a crazy stretch

you have any regrets about your move to vegas? anything different than you thought?

Its "illegal" in Tampa - but the surrounding counties its not, even st pete it's allowed

they were just ticketing drivers, but then they started impounding cars and suing drivers.. which is more absurd than it being a tech company

Love the job. Hate the city... but I get to travel a lot. Been hiking Red Rock at least once a week. Went to Hawaii and Wyoming/Colorado/Utah over the last month and a half. I avoid the strip like the plague. I'm happy enough. Wish Vegas wasn't such a shit hole though.

I'm planning to move to a nicer part of town this summer so maybe things will get better. Lots of people like Henderson and say it's a lot different than L.V. Just seems to me like every damn person I meet out here has some form of mental illness or something. I grew up in Idaho so maybe I'm the weird one. It's just different.

i think the area of town will fix that. In my experience - which I've lived all over the US the last 3 years - every city is like that.. you just don't know which part of the city is right for you until you get there...

hopefully Henderson is better for you

If you're going to put 50k miles a year on a taxi then the return you get from going electric skyrockets as well. Why EVs have a lot of practical application for taxi's.

I think it's a good thing. I applaud companies that get around regulations in order to compete. Don't feel sorry for the cab companies at all. A lot of these big companies actually lobby for these regulations to keep mom and pops businesses from being able to compete.

I have never taken a taxi in Vegas, I just ride the Deuce or use my 20-something-year-old legs.
The good thing about Uber though is that you get told about the cost of the fare ahead of time, no real surprises.

As far as über... Never have used it.

i use a car service to and from the airport here in NY
in Vegas I get picked up to and from the airport.. So no need for that.

If you think the taxi cartel is trying to stifle competition now, wait until uber tries to go autonomous cars. There would be no way they could compete.
