Preview: Phillies at Braves

Gracenote

Aug 7, 2017

The Philadelphia Phillies sit in last place in the National League East, but have reasons to be optimistic entering the opener of a two-game series Tuesday at the Atlanta Braves. The Phillies have dominated their division rival through 2017, sweeping a four-game series from Atlanta in Philadelphia to end last month and improve to 9-2 against the Braves this season while leadoff hitter Cesar Hernandez continues to impress since returning from an oblique injury in mid-July.

Hernandez is hitting .346 with a .915 OPS in 19 games since rejoining the lineup - helping Philadelphia go 10-9 in that stretch - and leads the Phillies in runs scored (55) and stolen bases (12) on the season. Atlanta is 3-3 on its current eight-game homestand, taking two of three from Miami after losing twice in three tries against NL West leader Los Angeles. Atlanta’s leadoff hitter also is performing at the plate, as center fielder Ender Inciarte brings a season-high 12-game hitting streak into the series opener after collecting two hits in Sunday’s 4-1 loss. There will be plenty of eyes on Braves starter Julio Teheran, who has struggled in his first season pitching at SunTrust Park and sparked speculation Atlanta may look to move the right-hander this offseason.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN Southeast (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies TBA vs. Braves RH Julio Teheran (7-9, 5.10 ERA)

While the Phillies have not announced a starter for the series opener, Zach Eflin is in line to make his first major-league appearance since May 28. He missed a month after being demoted to the minors with an elbow injury, and would pitch Tuesday on four days rest despite allowing 16 runs on 23 hits in 17 innings in his past three starts at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Eflin is 0-3 with a 6.13 ERA in eight major-league starts this season, including a seven-inning stint against Atlanta on April 23 in which he allowed one run on three hits.

Teheran’s home numbers have improved somewhat, but the fact remains he sports a 6.91 ERA with 48 runs allowed in 57 1/3 innings at home this season and regardless of venue has surrendered 27 homers - tied for the most in the NL. He held the Los Angeles Dodgers to three runs in five innings of a no-decision at home Wednesday, after losing three starts in a row to the Chicago Cubs, at Los Angeles and at Philadelphia. Despite allowing eight runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Phillies, Teheran owns a 6-2 record and 3.57 ERA on the road.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Braves have lost 11 of their past 15 games and are hitting .237 as a team while averaging 6.7 runners left on base per contest in that span.

2. Phillies CF Odubel Herrera went 7-for-16 with two homers and five RBIs in the four-game sweep of the Braves last weekend, and brings a 10-game hitting streak into the series.

3. Atlanta began the week leading the majors in pinch-hit RBIs (33) and tied with San Diego for most pinch-hit homers (six).

Preview: Astros at White Sox

Gracenote

Aug 7, 2017

Dallas Keuchel looks to rebound from his first loss of the season as the American League-best Houston Astros begin an eight-game road trip on Tuesday with the first of three contests against the struggling Chicago White Sox. The 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner has authored two lackluster starts since returning following an eight-week absence with a pinched nerve in his neck.

Alex Bregman ripped a tying two-run triple and scored on an RBI single from Juan Centeno to cap a wild four-run rally in the ninth inning of Houston's 7-6 victory over Toronto on Sunday. Bregman has three homers among his eight extra-base hits, 10 RBIs and eight runs scored during his nine-game hitting streak, although he just 1-for-6 against Tuesday starter Derek Holland. While the ascending Astros' postseason ticket is all but punched, the White Sox have dropped six in a row and 23 of 27 contests since July 4 to plummet into the basement of the AL. Chicago could receive a much-needed jolt in the opener of its six-game homestand with the potential return of Avisail Garcia, who has missed 12 games with a strained right thumb.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston), WGN (Chicago)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (9-1, 2.15 ERA) vs. White Sox LH Derek Holland (5-11, 5.27)

Keuchel surrendered a homer and allowed three runs total in his second straight start on Wednesday, as he worked five innings in a 3-0 setback to Tampa Bay. Although the 29-year-old struck out a season-low two batters, he kept his spirits up despite seeing his 11-game winning streak come to a halt. "I felt good, so that's the main thing," Keuchel told reporters. "Some tough luck. ... I didn't do myself any good with getting into some hitters counts early."

While Keuchel is dealing with his first loss, Holland is 0-5 in his last nine outings since recording his last win on June 13. The 30-year-old has permitted 50 earned runs and 18 homers in his last 11 starts (51 2/3 innings), and is coming off a three-pitch relief appearance at Boston on Saturday. Holland owns a 5-3 mark with a 4.50 ERA in 13 career starts against the Astros, although he is 0-2 with a 6.67 ERA in five starts at Minute Maid Park.

WALK-OFFS

1. Houston RF Josh Reddick has hit safely in 11 consecutive starts, recording two homers and 10 RBIs in that span.

2. Chicago 2B Yolmer Sanchez carries a four-game hitting streak into Tuesday's tilt versus Keuchel, against whom he is 0-for-3 with a strikeout.

3. Centeno, who was recalled from Triple-A Fresno on Saturday, is 5-for-11 with three RBIs in three games with the Astros.

Preview: Brewers at Twins

Gracenote

Aug 8, 2017

Minnesota Twins standout Miguel Sano hopes to return to the lineup Tuesday after a three-game absence when his club hosts the Milwaukee Brewers in the second contest of their four-game series. The All-Star third baseman has been sidelined with a bruised left hand since being hit by a pitch Friday but resumed taking batting practice Monday.

The Twins posted a 5-4 victory without Sano and the 25-homer slugger is optimistic after an MRI exam and CT scan ruled out a broken bone. "It's encouraging," manager Paul Molitor, also feeling relieved, told reporters. "If you get hit multiple times in the same area of your hand, it has the chance to linger a bit. I think the peace of mind of having multiple tests was a good thing for him. It's about how much he can test it without risking more damage." While Minnesota sits 2 1/2 games behind the Kansas City Royals and Tampa Bay Rays for the American League's second wild-card spot, the Brewers fell 1 1/2 games behind Chicago in the National League Central after the Cubs won in San Francisco 5-3 on Monday night. Milwaukee left fielder Ryan Braun is homerless in his last 12 contests, but had three hits Monday and is 5-for-8 over the last two games.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Matt Garza (5-5, 3.68 ERA) vs. Twins LH Adalberto Mejia (4-5, 4.30)

Garza defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in his last turn when he gave up one run and four hits over 5 2/3 innings. The 33-year-old has allowed two or fewer runs in each of his past five outings, sporting a 2.00 ERA during the stretch. Garza is 2-2 with a 2.43 ERA in five career starts against Minnesota, including a win in his lone start at Target Field when he gave up one runs and six hits over seven innings June 6, 2015.

Mejia lost to the Texas Rangers in his last outing as he allowed four runs and seven hits over four innings. The 24-year-old is winless over his last five turns - the stretch includes two setbacks - despite giving up only four total runs in three no-decisions. Mejia, who is making his first career start versus the Brewers, is 2-4 with a 5.20 ERA in 11 home starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brewers CF Keon Broxton ended a 16-game homerless drought by hitting his 15th of the season Monday.

2. Minnesota SS Jorge Polanco was a career-best 4-for-4 with two RBIs on Monday to stretch his hitting streak to five games.

3. Milwaukee RF Domingo Santana (wrist) played one day after being hit by a pitch and went 0-for-4 with a run scored.

Preview: Cardinals at Royals

Gracenote

Aug 8, 2017

The St. Louis Cardinals have a chance to move above the .500 mark for the first time since June 1 when they resume their four-game, home-and-home series at the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. The Cardinals have won three in a row following Monday's 11-3 victory and are 4-3 heading into the finale of their eight-game road trip.

Matt Carpenter swatted a three-run homer to cap a six-run fourth inning that broke open Monday's game and boosted his career numbers against Kansas City to five homers and 17 RBIs with a .365 batting average in 22 games. Kolten Wong also homered and drove in four runs for St. Louis, which has amassed 28 runs over the past three games to remain 3 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central. Kansas City has lost seven of 10 following its nine-game winning streak, dropping three games behind first-place Cleveland in the American League Central and falling into a tie with Tampa Bay for the second wild card. Royals left-hander Jason Vargas can match his career high in victories when he goes for his 14th win before the series moves across Interstate 70 for two games in St. Louis.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FS1, FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (8-4, 3.66 ERA) vs. Royals LH Jason Vargas (13-5, 3.10)

Wacha lasted only four innings after he was pulled for a pinch hitter in his last start at Milwaukee, giving up one run on five hits while not factoring in the decision. He was 5-1 over his previous six starts, permitting two runs or fewer in each of the victories, and has lost only once since the beginning of June. Wacha owns a 2-1 record and 2.42 ERA in four starts versus Kansas City.

Vargas was 12-3 with a 2.22 ERA after winning his seventh consecutive start on June 30, a superb stretch in which he surrendered a combined 11 runs en route to earning an All-Star berth. He has wobbled a bit since, winning once and failing to pitch beyond five innings in four of his last five starts. Carpenter is 4-for-4 against Vargas, who is 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA lifetime versus St. Louis.

WALK-OFFS

1. Royals 3B Mike Moustakas hit his 32nd homer in the series opener, leaving him four shy of Steve Balboni's single-season club record.

2. Cardinals CF Dexter Fowler tripled in his return from the disabled list while OF Stephen Piscotty was demoted to Triple-A Memphis.

3. Royals C Salvador Perez (strained intercostal muscle) said he hopes to return shortly after his 10-day stint on the disabled list ends.

PREDICTION: Cardinals 5, Royals 3

GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (79-32) at Arizona Diamondbacks (63-48)

Preview: Dodgers at Diamondbacks

Gracenote

Aug 7, 2017

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been scorching hot as the summer goes on, winning 13 of their last 14 overall and 24 of 27 since July 4 to all but put the National League West title on ice. On pace for 115 wins this season, the Dodgers look to inch closer to that staggering total on Tuesday when they begin to wrap up a nine-game road trip with the first of three contests at the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Justin Turner raised his batting average to an NL-best .349 after belting a two-run homer and scoring three times in Sunday's 8-0 rout of the New York Mets. The 32-year-old is 13-for-37 with a homer and five RBIs against Arizona this season, but just 1-for-9 with three strikeouts versus Tuesday starter Zack Godley. Majors-best Los Angeles leads Colorado by 15 1/2 games and third-place Arizona by 16, although the Diamondbacks - loser of four of seven - likely are more concerned with their five-game advantage over Milwaukee for the second wild-card spot. Paul Goldschmidt had an RBI double in Sunday's 6-3 setback to San Francisco to improve to 8-for-16 with five extra-base hits (three homers), 10 RBIs and four runs scored during his four-game hitting streak.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, SportsNet Los Angeles, FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Kenta Maeda (10-4, 3.79 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Zack Godley (5-4, 2.86)

Maeda posted his fourth win in as many starts last Tuesday after scattering two hits and striking out six over seven innings in a 3-2 victory at Atlanta. The 29-year-old Japanese star is 5-1 with a 2.20 ERA in a six-game span, but yielded 10 runs in nine innings of two April appearances against Arizona. Jake Lamb is 9-for-20 with two homers and six RBIs against Maeda, although the right-hander has limited Goldschmidt to a 4-for-21 performance at the plate.

Godley recorded his second straight scoreless outing after scattering three hits in six innings of Wednesday's 3-0 triumph at the Chicago Cubs. The 27-year-old permitted seven hits and struck out 12 in his last two trips to the mound. Godley pitched well versus the Dodgers on July 5, also allowing three hits and just one run over 5 2/3 innings to settle for the hard-luck loss.

WALK-OFFS

1. Los Angeles rookie 1B Cody Bellinger has homered in back-to-back contests and four times in his last six games.

2. Arizona RF David Peralta has scored at least one run in five straight contests.

3. Dodgers SS Corey Seager is 9-for-16 during his four-game hitting streak and is 11-for-35 with a homer, eight RBIs and six runs scored versus Arizona this season.

Gracenote

Aug 7, 2017

The Seattle Mariners are hoping a change of uniform will provide a spark for newly acquired Yonder Alonso when they continue their pursuit of a postseason berth in Tuesday's opener of a two-game set at the Oakland Athletics. The Mariners are 4-3 on their nine-game road trip and are only one game behind the Kansas City Royals for the second wild card spot in the American League.

Alonso's Seattle debut will come against his former team after Oakland traded the All-Star first baseman to the Mariners on Sunday in exchange for minor league outfielder Boog Powell. Alonso has clubbed a career-high 22 home runs, but has been in a spiral that dropped his batting average from just over .300 in mid-June to its current .266. While Seattle split a doubleheader with Kansas City on Sunday, Oakland capped the longest nine-inning game in franchise history (4 hours, 12 minutes) by scoring five eighth-inning runs for an 11-10 victory at the Los Angeles Angels to improve to 6-3 over its last nine games. The Athletics have won six of 11 meetings against the Mariners this season, including three of four in Oakland in April.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH Ariel Miranda (7-5, 4.41 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Kendall Graveman (2-3, 4.96)

Miranda went 5-0 during a nine-start unbeaten streak from April 28 to June 10, allowing two runs or fewer eight times, but has won only once over his last nine turns (1-3). His drought reached five starts when he took the loss last time out at Texas, giving up five runs (four earned) in 5 2/3 innings. Miranda had his shortest start at Oakland on April 22, yielding four runs on seven hits in three innings.

Graveman had a forgettable performance in his return to the rotation following 2 1/2 months on the disabled list, getting rocked for seven runs on eight hits in two innings at San Francisco. He allowed six runs in his first four starts in April, but missed the Seattle series with his first trip to the DL because of a strained shoulder. Nelson Cruz has tormented Graveman, going 11-for-17 with a home run.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cruz leads the AL in RBIs with 84 and on pace for 100 for the third time.

2. Athletics RF Chad Pinder is 9-for-17 during a four-game hitting streak.

3. Mariners 1B Danny Valencia, expected to platoon with Alonso, is batting .307 with four homers in 28 games versus Oakland.

Preview: Orioles at Angels

Gracenote

Aug 8, 2017

Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado appeared destined for a lost season when he entered July with a .216 batting average but is suddenly scalding the baseball entering Tuesday's contest against the host Los Angeles Angels. The Orioles' star hit a tiebreaking grand slam in Monday's 6-2 series-opening victory -- one day after driving in five runs -- and is 17-for-38 over the last nine games.

Machado's batting average has soared up to .256 and his homer count sits at 21 so he is in position to post his third straight 30-homer campaign. He led Baltimore to its third straight win and eighth in 10 games as the club moved within 1 1/2 games of the Kansas City Royals and Tampa Bay Rays for the American League's second wild-card spot. Los Angeles star center fielder Mike Trout celebrated his 26th birthday Monday by recording his 1,000th career hit and later homering but the Angels suffered their third straight setback and stand three games out in the wild-card chase. Los Angeles third baseman Yunel Escobar (intercostal strain) is waiting for Monday's MRI exam results to come back and is hopeful of avoiding a stint on the disabled list.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Jeremy Hellickson (7-5, 4.45 ERA) vs. Angels RH Parker Bridwell (5-1, 3.20)

Hellickson was superb in his first outing after being acquired from the Philadelphia as he gave up only five hits over seven scoreless innings in a victory over the Kansas City Royals. The 30-year-old is 2-0 over his last seven outings since last suffering a loss against the Boston Red Sox on June 14. Hellickson is 3-3 with a 2.78 ERA in seven career appearances (six starts) against the Angels and has struggled with Trout (3-for-6, home run, three walks).

Bridwell received a no-decision in his last turn when he allowed four runs and six hits in five innings against the Philadelphia Phillies. The 26-year-old had allowed only five runs over his previous four outings, going 3-0 during the stretch. Bridwell, who is facing the Orioles for the first time, is 2-1 with a 4.24 ERA in six home appearances (five starts).

WALK-OFFS

1. Former Angels star Don Baylor (1979 AL MVP), who also had a playing stint with the Orioles and managed two MLB teams, died of blood cancer Monday at age 68.

2. Baltimore SS Tim Beckham was named AL Player of the Week after going 14-for-24 with three home runs, three doubles and one triple in his first six games with the team since he was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays.

3. Los Angeles LF Cameron Maybin (knee) was activated from the 10-day disabled list - he went 1-for-4 on Monday - while OF Shane Robinson was designated for assignment.

GAME: Chicago Cubs (59-52) at San Francisco Giants (44-70)

Preview: Cubs at Giants

Gracenote

Aug 8, 2017

The Chicago Cubs have looked like defending World Series champions since the All-Star break and seek another victory when they visit the sinking San Francisco Giants on Tuesday. Chicago is 16-7 since getting the opportunity to recharge after registering a 5-3 victory in Monday's opener of the three-game set.

One of the prime reasons for the Cubs' resurgence is rising catcher Willson Contreras, who was named National League Player of the Week after going 10-for-22 with five homers and 13 RBIs. "I can't believe it," the 25-year-old told reporters of the surge that increased his numbers to 21 homers and 70 RBIs. "To be able to put a good swing on a fastball and good pitches - I'm not out there trying to hit homers. I'm trying to put the barrel on the ball, and it just goes." First baseman Anthony Rizzo (three hits) and shortstop Javier Baez (two-run inside-the-park homer) were the hitting heroes Monday as Chicago increased its lead in the National League Central to 1 1/2 games over the Milwaukee Brewers. San Francisco All-Star catcher Buster Posey was hitless in four at-bats in the opener, is 1-for-17 over his last six contests and is mired in a 23-game homerless drought.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, CSN Chicago, NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jose Quintana (6-9, 4.42 ERA) vs. Giants LH Ty Blach (7-7, 4.24)

Quintana is 2-1 with a 4.13 ERA in four starts for the club since being acquired from the Chicago White Sox. The 28-year-old was hit hard in his last outing when he served up three homers and allowed six runs and six hits in a five-inning no-decision against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Quintana lost his lone career outing against the Giants when he gave up four runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings Aug. 13, 2014.

Blach was superb in defeating the Oakland Athletics in his last turn when he gave up two runs and six hits over eight innings. The 26-year-old, who hit his first career homer against Oakland, is 4-4 with a 3.70 ERA in 14 home appearances (11 starts). Blach defeated the Cubs on May 22 when he gave up three runs and eight hits over seven innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs All-Star RHP Wade Davis recorded his 24th consecutive save with Monday's hitless inning.

2. San Francisco CF Denard Span was hitless in five at-bats Monday and is 4-for-35 over his past eight contests.

3. Chicago 2B/OF Ben Zobrist hasn't driven in a run in his past 10 appearances and is 6-for-35 during the stretch.
