Louisiana Downs - Race #7 - Post: 5:57pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $5,500 Class Rating: 43

Rating: 4

#2 CARMENS GOOD KARMA (ML=4/1)
#5 ONLY ORDAINED (ML=6/1)

CARMENS GOOD KARMA - Schmidt drops her down to this level. You don't need too much more knowledge to think this thoroughbred should be one of the top contenders at this level. This equine didn't run well on a sloppy track in her last start at Louisiana Downs. You may want to throw out that showing. ONLY ORDAINED - Faced tougher last time around the track at Lone Star Park. Based on Equibase class ratings, this is a weaker field, so I will put this animal on my list of top contenders. Trying to be a first time winner moving from a grass race to the main track. I think Gonzalez will have her in good shape for today's event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 CARSON'S KATIE (ML=5/2), #7 RIVER SIDE RUN (ML=7/2), #1 PEACH BABY (ML=9/2),

CARSON'S KATIE - Hasn't finished in the money in any sprint contests of late. Not likely to see her doing it today either. A pattern of deteriorating speed figures 43/32/17 for this mount. RIVER SIDE RUN - This mount just hasn't looked ready of late. PEACH BABY - Has been beaten as the favorite twice. A repeat is probably in store.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - ONLY ORDAINED - My historical data shows that fillies often run much better second time on Lasix. That's the case for this one, so I think she should run well today.

Mountaineer Park - Race #4 - Post: 8:06pm - Optional Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $16,200 Class Rating: 92

Rating: 4

#5 TREE FIRE (ML=6/1)
#8 COLBYVILLE (ML=6/1)
#9 MISTERBULLTOYOU (ML=5/1)

TREE FIRE - I'm focusing on the class of this horse, and this one is the 'classiest' of the bunch. Last ran at Presque Isle Downs and finished fifth. Reviewing his Past Performances, I see he was close at the wire, within five of the winner. This horse likes to win at different racing venues. The switch in venue today may be a wake up call. COLBYVILLE - When this jockey and handler work together you have to take a look. Paucar and Garcia have been terrific together. Have to make this gelding a solid contender; he comes off a good effort on July 19th. MISTERBULLTOYOU - This gelding is in good form. Finished first on July 16th. Everybody's got their favorite tracks, but if you ask this horse, I think his answer would be Mountaineer Park.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 BOPPIN ANDA WEAVIN (ML=3/1), #6 ROMEO ROYALE (ML=5/1), #7 FINE (ML=6/1),

BOPPIN ANDA WEAVIN - You should normally wager against chalks that haven't raced or show no activity in the morning over the last few weeks. ROMEO ROYALE - This questionable contender will have a tough time winning this 1 mile 70 yards turf race. He just doesn't win races very often. FINE - Mountaineer Park has not been kind to this less than sharp equine. Finished second in his most recent race with a common fig. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this bunch.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - TREE FIRE - Top speed rating in route events on the grass make this noble animal a tough competitor against these ponies.

# 9 MAGICIAN'S BAGS 7/2

# 4 MARTY 6/1

# 10 HIGUEY 5/1

I've got to go with MAGICIAN'S BAGS. Reason to like this gelding as he has in the saddle one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. Has been running soundly lately and will most likely be up on the front end early on. The speed fig of 67 from his most recent contest looks solid in here. MARTY - Has been running soundly and has among the most favorable speed in the race for today's distance. Is tough not to examine based on speed figures which have been solid - 61 avg - of late. HIGUEY - This colt has some longshot handicapping angles I like to bet on. The class figure of today's race is much lower than his last race.

Preview: Marlins at Nationals

Gracenote

Aug 8, 2017

The power battle between Giancarlo Stanton and Bryce Harper did not disappoint in the series opener between Washington and Miami Marlins on Monday, and the final result was one the Nationals are seeing a lot. The Nationals will try to clinch a series split and move 23 games over .500 when they host the Marlins in the second of the four-game series on Tuesday.

Harper belted his 150th career homer in Monday's 3-2 triumph, which pushed Washington's lead in the National league East to 14 games over second-place Miami. The most encouraging part of the win came from right-hander Max Scherzer, who worked seven strong innings after sitting out most of last week due to neck stiffness. Stanton's blast - his major-league leading 37th - was his fourth in the last four games but the Marlins are just 1-3 in that span while dropping five of their last eight contests. Trying to turn the tide and shut down Harper for Miami on Tuesday will be Vance Worley while the Nationals counter with right-hander A.J. Cole.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Vance Worley (1-2, 5.31 ERA) vs. Nationals RH A.J. Cole (1-1, 4.91)

Worley had no trouble shutting down Washington on Wednesday, when he scattered two hits over seven scoreless innings and did not walk a batter in a win. The veteran bounced around the pitching staff this season but is getting another chance in the rotation and is 1-2 with a 5.60 ERA in six starts. Worley has been tough on Harper in the past, holding him to 2-for-13 with no extra-base hits.

Cole is getting his second chance as well but did not look particularly sharp when going up against Worley at Miami last week. The 25-year-old was ripped for five runs on six hits and four walks in five innings to suffer the loss. Cole, who made one other start for the Nationals at Philadelphia in May, went 4-4 with a 5.66 ERA in 16 starts for Triple-A Syracuse.

WALK-OFFS

1. Nationals RHP Stephen Strasburg (elbow) played catch on Monday after throwing in the bullpen on Sunday, but there is still no timetable for his return.

2. Marlins LHP Chris O'Grady was removed in the second inning on Monday after suffering an oblique strain.

3. Harper is 7-for-18 with a pair of home runs in the last four games.

PREDICTION: Nationals 5, Marlins 4

GAME: Detroit Tigers (51-60) at Pittsburgh Pirates (55-57)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, August 08 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Preview: Tigers at Pirates

Gracenote

Aug 8, 2017

The relative weakness of the National League Central is keeping the Pittsburgh Pirates in the race despite a sub-.500 record. The Pirates will try to draw one game closer to the first-place Chicago Cubs when they host the Detroit Tigers in the second of a four-game home-and-home interleague series on Tuesday.

Pittsburgh came out of the All-Star break hot and reached one game over .500 on July 21 before dropping off over the next two weeks during an offensive slump. That offense still comes and goes, but the pitching got the Pirates off on the right foot against the Tigers as Trevor Williams surrendered one hit in seven scoreless innings and two relievers closed out the one-hit, 3-0 shutout. Right-hander Chad Kuhl is coming off a strong outing of his own and will try to lead Pittsburgh to its fifth win in six games when he takes the mound on Tuesday opposite Tigers lefty Matthew Boyd. Detroit had its own hot streak last week but dropped its last three games while totaling five runs.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, ATT SportsNet Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers LH Matthew Boyd (5-5, 5.35 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Chad Kuhl (4-7, 4.53)

Boyd had a string of three straight wins and three consecutive quality starts come to an end when he allowed four runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings at Baltimore on Thursday. The 26-year-old ran into some control problems in the outing and issued four walks while needing 91 pitches to get through 4 1/3 frames. Boyd is seeing Pittsburgh for the first time and is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three career interleague games - two starts.

Kuhl turned in his best start of the season last time out, scattering four hits over seven scoreless innings in a win over the Cincinnati Reds. The Delaware native surrendered two or fewer earned runs in six of his last seven turns. Kuhl is getting his first look at Detroit and going for his first win in interleague play, where he is 0-0 with a 2.08 ERA in three starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Pirates RHP George Kontos made his team debut on Monday after being acquired from the San Francisco Giants and worked a perfect eighth inning.

2. Detroit recalled INF Jeimer Candelario, who was acquired in the deadline deal that sent Justin Wilson and Alex Avila to the Chicago Cubs.

3. Pittsburgh C Francisco Cervelli is 4-for-11 with four runs scored in his last three games.

Preview: Yankees at Blue Jays

Gracenote

Aug 7, 2017

New York Yankees rookie Aaron Judge was the talk of the town in the tabloids prior to the All-Star break, amassing a majors-best 30 homers while heightening expectations in the Big Apple. The 25-year-old has slowed considerably since then, but looks to gain momentum from a three-run homer in his last outing when the visiting Yankees open a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday at Rogers Centre.

"He's getting back to the right approach. He doesn't need to pull the ball to hit home run. He just needs to stay on the ball, and that will do it,” manager Joe Girardi said of Judge, who is hitting .182 with 35 strikeouts since July 14. Judge belted a 456-foot homer against Tuesday starter J.A. Happ in their last encounter on July 4, although the veteran left-hander limited the fireworks from there to scatter four hits over six innings in Toronto's 4-1 victory. While the Yankees have won two straight to reside three games behind first-place Boston in the AL East, the cellar-dwelling Blue Jays were left reeling after surrendering four runs in the ninth of a 7-6 setback to Houston on Sunday. Jose Bautista launched a two-run homer in that outing, but is batting a woeful .149 with 13 strikeouts in his career versus Tuesday starter CC Sabathia.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, YES (New York), Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH CC Sabathia (9-4, 3.81 ERA) vs. Blue Jays LH J.A. Happ (4-8, 3.92)

Sabathia allowed four runs for the second straight outing after surrendering two homers in six innings of a 4-3 loss to Detroit last Tuesday. The 37-year-old struggled in his last encounter with Toronto, permitting four runs in 2 2/3 innings to take the loss in a 4-1 setback on July 4. Kendrys Morales (.348) and Justin Smoak (.304) have fared well in 23 career at-bats each versus Sabathia, who has split a pair of decisions over three starts versus the Blue Jays this season despite surrendering 11 runs on 15 hits in 13 innings.

Happ followed his victory over the Yankees on July 4 with an 0-3 mark in four outings before snapping that winless stretch on Wednesday. The 34-year-old allowed one run on six hits and struck out a season-high 10 in seven innings of a 5-1 triumph at the floundering Chicago White Sox. Happ has recorded seven quality starts in his last 10 outings, but only has a 4-4 mark to show for it.

WALK-OFFS

1. Toronto CF Kevin Pillar has scored a run in each contest of his six-game hitting streak.

2. Yankees OF Brett Gardner, who has hit safely in 17 of his last 18 outings overall, is batting .300 with three homers versus the Blue Jays this season.

3. Blue Jays RHP Roberto Osuna has endured blown saves in three of his last five opportunities.

GAME: Texas Rangers (53-58) at New York Mets (49-60)

Preview: Rangers at Mets

Gracenote

Aug 7, 2017

After getting a close-up view of what life is like in the penthouse over the weekend, the New York Mets hope for better results when they host the Texas Rangers on Tuesday in the opener of a two-game interleague series. The Mets have dropped four in a row and seven of eight after getting steamrolled by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Mets were shut out twice in a three-game sweep by the white-hot Dodgers and had only one hit in Sunday's series finale, prompting manager Terry Collins to acknowledge: "We were overmatched." Sitting a season-worst 11 games under .500, New York is hoping for the return of right fielder Jay Bruce, who sat out the past two games due to a stiff neck. Texas had to settle for a four-game split at Minnesota after squandering a five-run lead in the series finale to drop into eighth place in the chase for the two American League wild cards. Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus is riding a seven-game hitting streak that includes three hits in three of his past five games.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Andrew Cashner (7-8, 3.36 ERA) vs. Mets RH Chris Flexen (0-1, 12.00)

Cashner continued his strong run by limiting Seattle to one run and six hits over six innings last time out to win his third consecutive start. He recorded a quality start in seven of his last 10 turns and yielded a combined eight earned runs in his last five outings. The 30-year-old has struggled against the Mets with an 0-3 record and 6.18 ERA in nine appearances (four starts).

Flexen has lasted only three innings in each of his first two career starts, although a blister was a contributing issue last time out when he was tagged for five runs and eight hits at Colorado. He also struggled in his major league debut at San Diego by giving up four runs on five hits and four walks. Flexen was 6-1 with a 1.66 ERA in seven starts at Double-A Binghamton this year.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre, the most recent member of the 3,000-hit club, is batting .275 with six homers in 55 games versus New York.

2. Mets SS Amed Rosario, the organization's top prospect, is batting .182 in six games after going 1-for-10 versus Los Angeles.

3. Rangers OF Joey Gallo hit his 30th homer Sunday to extend his hitting streak to six games.

GAME: San Diego Padres (49-62) at Cincinnati Reds (46-66)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, August 08 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio

Preview: Padres at Reds

Gracenote

Aug 8, 2017

The Cincinnati Reds might not be near the top of the standings in the Nationals League, but it's still a lot of fun to watch them hit. The Reds will try to put on another power display and grab a second consecutive win when they host the San Diego Padres in the second of a four-game series on Tuesday.

Cincinnati is 20 games under .500 at 46-66 but put on a show in the series opener on Monday with four home runs, including a grand slam from Patrick Kivlehan, in an 11-3 trouncing. Joey Votto slammed his 30th homer of the season in the victory and is making his way up franchise leaderboards into a tie with Ted Kluszewski (251) for fifth place on the franchise leaderboard and one ahead of former teammate Jay Bruce for the most in Great American Ballpark history at 136. Votto is 3-for-6 without a homer in his career against Padres right-hander Luis Perdomo, who starts on Tuesday opposite Reds righty Sal Romano. San Diego lost four of its last five games and is allowing an average of 6.6 runs in that span.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RHP Luis Perdomo (5-6, 4.92 ERA) vs. Reds RH Sal Romano (2-3, 4.88)

Perdomo is coming off a tough outing against Minnesota in which he was charged with five runs and seven hits in six innings. The Dominican Republic native allowed at least four earned runs in four of his last six outings and did not notch more than four strikeouts in any of those starts. Perdomo was stronger against Cincinnati on June 12, when he yielded three runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings to earn a win.

Romano is trying to settle into his first stint in a big-league rotation and went six innings at Pittsburgh on Thursday but was charged with four runs and eight hits in a loss. The 23-year-old did not walk a batter in those six frames after issuing six free passes in 3 2/3 innings against Miami his previous turn. Romano won his last start at home, limiting Miami to one run and three hits in six innings on July 23.

WALK-OFFS

1. Votto hit safely in each of his last 12 games.

2. San Diego LF Jose Pirela homered twice on Monday to lift his season total to seven.

3. Cincinnati placed C Devin Mesoraco on the paternity list and recalled RHP Austin Brice on Monday.

Preview: Red Sox at Rays

Gracenote

Aug 7, 2017

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia could return to a lineup suddenly crowded with more than capable infielders as the first-place Boston Red Sox begin a crucial five-game road trip Tuesday with the first of two against the Tampa Bay Rays. Pedroia missed eight contests with a knee injury, but Boston turned a half-game deficit to New York in the American League East into a three-game lead during that span with a weekend series looming at Yankee Stadium.

"He had a good day (Sunday) … BP, aggressive infield and ground-ball work," Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters about Pedroia, who is batting .307 and could ease his way back Tuesday as the designated hitter. "Tuesday is still a possibility for him to return to us." Boston went 7-1 in Pedroia's absence as third baseman Rafael Devers burst onto the scene by batting .349 with three home runs in his first 11 major league games and utilityman Eduardo Nunez is hitting .400 with four blasts in nine contests since being acquired from San Francisco at the trade deadline. Tampa Bay, which is 5 1/2 games behind the Red Sox but in a virtual tie with Kansas City for the final AL wild card spot, defeated Milwaukee 2-1 on Sunday when Steven Souza Jr. delivered the Rays' first walk-off home run since May 22, 2014. Boston ace and AL Cy Young Award favorite Chris Sale is coming off his worst outing of the season in which his 21 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings streak was snapped and opposes rookie Austin Pruitt, who makes his fourth career start and third in a row after shutting down Houston on Wednesday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Chris Sale (13-4, 2.70 ERA) vs. Rays RH Austin Pruitt (6-2, 5.65)

Sale received a no-decision after allowing seven runs, eight hits and one walk while striking out five - a season low - in five innings of Boston's 12-10 victory over Cleveland on Aug. 1. The 28-year-old Floridian, who leads the majors with 216 strikeouts while standing third in WHIP (0.91) and tied for fourth in ERA through Sunday's games, had yielded nine runs over his previous eight starts. Evan Longoria is 3-for-30 with 13 strikeouts versus Sale, who fell to 6-5 with a 3.67 ERA in 13 games (11 starts) versus Tampa Bay, 2-3, 2.11 in six games (five starts) at Tropicana Field and 2-1, 3.43 this season against the Rays after permitting four runs in a 4-1 loss July 6.

Pruitt allowed five hits and a walk while striking out three in 6 1/3 innings of a 3-0 victory over the Astros, who lead the majors in run scored. The 27-year-old Texan, who is 1-1 with a 3.14 ERA as a starter, was recalled from Triple-A Durham on July 28 and lost at Yankee Stadium 6-1 that night after yielding five runs and four hits (three homers) in five innings. Pruitt, a ninth-round draft pick in 2013 by the Rays out of the University of Houston, is 5-1 with a 6.91 ERA in relief - a number inflated by allowing five runs and 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings over two appearances at Fenway Park in April.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tampa Bay is 0-for-18 with runners in scoring position in its last three games and 2-for-33 in its past four, falling to fourth-worst in the majors at .235 in such situations entering Monday.

2. Boston DH Hanley Ramirez (.250, 17 home runs, 42 RBIs) missed the last two games with soreness in both obliques, but Farrell told reporters it wasn't a "DL situation.''

3. Rays 1B Lucas Duda is 10-for-31 with three home runs and four RBIs in 10 games since being acquired from the New York Mets after going 2-for-4 on Sunday.

PREDICTION: Red Sox 3, Rays 0

Preview: Rockies at Indians

Gracenote

Aug 7, 2017

Corey Kluber looks to continue his dominant run on the mound when his Cleveland Indians host the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday to open a two-game interleague series between a pair of teams in playoff position. Kluber joined Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and Nolan Ryan as the only pitchers since 1913 to strike out at least eight in 12 straight starts when he fanned 11 to beat the New York Yankees last time out.

“All three are guys I grew up watching and idolizing,” Kluber told the Plain Dealer, “so to be mentioned with them is definitely an honor.” Kluber, who is still five games behind Johnson’s all-time record of 17, owns one of the Indians' two victories in their last seven contests but they own a three-game lead over Kansas City in the American League Central. The Rockies hold down the first of two wild-card spots in the National League after winning six of their previous nine games and send 22-year-old German Marquez to the mound in the series opener as he goes for a fifth straight win. Nolan Arenado has hit safely in a season high-tying eight straight games (13-for-32) for Colorado, which outscored Cleveland 19-4 in two victories at home June 6-7.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado), STO (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH German Marquez (9-4, 4.11 ERA) vs. Indians RH Corey Kluber (9-3, 2.77)

Marquez has strung together five consecutive quality starts while winning four of them, but settled for a no-decision last time out against the New York Mets when he gave up three runs over six innings. The Venezuela native struck out a season-high 10 in the previous start at Washington, improving to 4-2 with a 3.86 ERA in nine road outings. Marquez, who is 3-0 since the All-Star break, is 2-0 in two career interleague starts.

Kluber registered his third complete game of the season last time out when he permitted one run on three hits with one walk and improved to 7-1 with a 2.22 ERA at home in 2017. The 31-year-old Alabama native has struck out 172 in 123 2/3 frames overall this year, fanning double digits in nine of his last 10 starts. Carlos Gonzalez owns a homer against Kluber, who won his only start against the Rockies in his career.

WALK-OFFS

1. Former Cleveland INF Mark Reynolds went 3-for-6 with two homers and five RBIs in Colorado’s series against the Indians in June.

2. Cleveland 2B Jason Kipnis went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Sunday after returning from almost a month on the disabled list with a hamstring injury.

3. The Rockies fell to 59-1 with a lead after eight innings following a 3-2 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday, ending the longest streak to begin a season in team history.

PREDICTION: Indians 6, Rockies 2
