Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Play: Money Line: Tampa Bay Rays +141

Boston's Jon Lester is 0-2 in three starts against Tampa Bay and has giving up 14 runs and 21 hits in 15 innings. Andy Sonnanstine for Tampa Bay is 1-0 in his only start against Boston going into the 6th inning allowing just 2 runs. Look for Sonnanstine who is 5-0 at home to stay perfect there and against the Red Sox as Lester once against gives up a ton of runs to the Rays. Play Tampa Bay

The Red Sox and Rays have averaged over 10 runs per game at Tropicana Field this season, and runs should once again be cheap in the series opener tonight.

Our Tuesday night MLB selection is on the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays going over the total at Tropicana Field in St. Pete.

Tonight begins perhaps the most important series of the season for the defending American League Champion Rays, as Boston comes to town for three games with a five-game lead over Tampa Bay for the AL Wild Card heading into this first contest. A Boston sweep would put the Rays eight games down with a month to go, and that doesn't take into account the fact that Texas is also in the race for the last American League playoff spot.

This could just be the biggest regular season game of Tampa righthanded starter Andy Sonnanstine's career, as Sonanstine will get called up from AAA-Durham to take the spot of Scott Kazmir who was just traded by the Rays to the Angels. Sonnanstine hasn't started for the Rays since June 25, and his numbers in the first three months certainly don't instill confidence tonight as the righthander had gone 6-7 with a 6.61 ERA in 15 starts before getting shipped down.

These two teams have played six games at Tropicana Field this season, and so far there has not been a shortage of runs as a total of 61 runs have been scored, or an average of over 10 runs per game. Take the Over.

Texas Rangers (-145)

Toronto @ Texas 5:05 PM EST

Play On: Texas (Rzepznski/Nippert) Listed

Toronto is 59-70 so far this season while Texas comes in with a nice 72-58 overall record on the year. Texas sits 6 games behind the LA Angels in the AL West division and 4 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL Wild Card standings. Texas is 43-27 the past 3 years when playing on Tuesday. Texas is 14-6 this year as a home favorite of -125 to -150. Texas is scoring 5.5 runs per game at home this year where they have a solid 41-25 record on the season. Dustin Nippert is 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA at home this year. I feel like the Rangers will get some revenge here today after last night's 18-10 whipping put on by Toronto. Rangers getting into must win situations and they get it done today. We'll recommend a small play on Texas in Game 1 today! Thanks and good luck, Rocky

The Angels are starting to pull away in the AL West and picked up momentum last night by dealing the Mariners their second consecutive shutout defeat.

With a little over a month remaining in the regular season, the Angels have turned the race for the AL West title into a romp.

The Angels blasted the Mariners 10-0 on Monday night to stretch their lead to six games over second-place Texas. Seattle, playing without Ichiro Suzuki, Adrian Beltre, Ken Griffey Jr. and Russell Branyan, is now 11 games back and are all but mathematically out of the playoff picture. The Mariners, the lowest scoring team in the American League, have been shut out in back-to-back games and even with Ichiro and Beltre slated to return to action tonight, don’t have nearly enough firepower to hang with the Angels.

Through 58 games the Angels hit 44 home runs and rank 10th in the AL with a .404 slugging percentage. In their last 72 games, the Angels have 105 homers and now rank fifth in the majors with a .452 slugging percentage. Each night a different LA player steps up with the big bat. Monday it was Vlad Guerrero who homered twice, including a tape-measure shot. He’s hitting .341 over the past 10 games.

With the addition of Scott Kazmir the Angels are poised to make a deeper playoff run this year. Joe Saunders has been impressive in his past two outings and tonight’s starter, Ervin Santana, has rebounded from a rough start to turn his season around. Santana saw his four-game winning streak come to an end Thursday with a 2-0 setback to the A’s but he still has an ERA of 2.67 in his last four starts and is poised to move above the .500 mark with a victory tonight.

The Halos are also 7-2 in Santana’s last nine starts and 10-2 in his last five starts against the Mariners. With John Lackey and Jered Weaver at the top, the Angels now have Kazmir, Saunders and Santana battling for the third spot in the playoff rotation. That’s a nice problem to have if you’re Mike Scoscia.

Seattle will send rookie Doug Fister to the hill. It will be Fister’s sixth big league start as he looks to improve on a 1-1 record and an ERA of 3.42.

If you’re hesitant about taking the Angels as a road favorite, let me try to put your mind at ease. The Angels are 23-9 in their last 32 games in this spot and are a sparkling 34-26 away from the Big A this season. This is a good spot to jump on the Angels given the M’s current offensive outage.

Free Pick: Angels -132

Washington Nationals at San Diego Padres

Lefty Clayton Richard had led his team to wins in four of his first five starts since coming over from Chicago, but was tatooed in his last start vs. Atlanta. There is no better team to get back on track against than the lowly Nats, who are 1-16 on the road when the total is 8.5 or less this season. Even worse they are 4-23 away following a game with a combined score of four runs or less. Richard has a 10-4 TSR in night games and Wash is 3-18 after a loss by 2 runs or less.

Today's Complimentary Selection

I delivered yesterday as the Twins take care of business easily. I’m making it two in a row as I’m headed out West where I’m taking the Padres at home against the visiting Nationals.

These two hooked up last night in Game 1 of this series with the Pads beating the Nats 3-1. After dropping their last two meetings of the season to Washington back in July, San Diego evened up their season series with yesterday’s win.

But going a little further back, and including yesterday’s win, San Diego is 14-6 its last 20 meetings against Washington, going back to the 2006 season.

At home, the Pads have been just as good, taking 7 of their last 9 in San Diego against the Nationals, including 5 of their last 6.

Washington comes into this game having lost four straight games and has won just 3 of its last 11 games overall and is just 2-5 on this current road trip.

Things won’t get any easier for the Nats as they drop another one in San Diego.

Complimentary Selection

For Tuesday’s Bonus Play, I’ll back the Rays as a rare home underdog against the Red Sox.

How do you not take this kind of plus price with a team that’s been as dominant at home as Tampa Bay has been since May of last year? The Rays have been playing better than .700 baseball at Tropicana Field since that time, and most recently, they’ve won 37 of their last 51 at home, going 11-4 in the last 15. They’re also 55-20 in their last 75 home games against teams with a winning overall record and 69-28 in their last 97 at home against squads that have a losing road record (and Boston is 31-33 away from Fenway Park).

The Red Sox have really not enjoyed the Trop recently, either, going 5-16 in their last 21 visits to Tampa. Additionally, the Rays have won eight of the last 11 overall this season against Boston.

So why is this price so high? Clearly, it’s because of the starting pitching matchup, with Boston sending Jon Lester (10-7, 3.60 ERA) against Andy Sonnanstine, who spent the last 2½ months in Triple-A after starting the season 6-7 with a 6.61 ERA. However, dig a little deeper and you’ll see some very interesting trends.

First off, Sonnanstine’s overall numbers in the bigs this year are awful, but at home, he’s 5-0 with a 4.54 ERA in six starts. Going back to last year, the Rays are 16-5 when Sonnanstine pitches at Tropicana Field, and they’ve won four straight games that the right-hander has started against the Red Sox, including a 6-2 home win on May 1. On the flip side, the Red Sox have come up empty in Lester’s last five starts against Tampa Bay. Two of the losses came last year in the ALCS, and the other three came this year by scores of 7-2, 14-5 and 4-2.

Also, as well as Lester has been pitching lately – and he’s been tremendous – Boston is just 5-3 in his last eight starts, including 2-3 on the road. Finally, there’s one startling negative stat that applies to the Red Sox: They’ve lost 12 of their last 13 road games to teams with a winning record!

Way too much value with Tampa Bay to pass up tonight, so take the plus money.

(based on a 1? to a 10? Rating)

3? TAMPA BAY

Anyone who follows jefferson knows the real deal and that's that! Like the old saying goes you can lead the horse to water but you can't make them drink!

Over 9 (+108): Search around have seen some book have this at 8.5 still. Either way like the over. Both of these teams have been hitting the ball very well and when these two face each other the scoreboards are always lit up. TAM turns to Sonnastine out of triple A to try and slow down the hot BOS team. BOS has won 11 of 14 games averaging over 6 runs per game in that time period. Lester is a pretty solid pitcher for BOS but not against TB where he has really struggled. Also on the road the struggles are usually twice as bad. BOS will get out early with a big lead and TB will come roaring back to push this one over easily. SCORE BOS 7 - TB 4

Chicago White Sox vs. Minnesota Twins

Minnesota Twins +135

1 Unit on Minnesota Twins +135
These two teams are headed in different directions and I'll back the one on the upswing at a great price tonight. The White Sox will be without one of their top sluggers as Jim Thome has been traded to the Dodgers. That's not good news for a team that has scored 3 or fewer runs in 6 of its last games. The White Sox have dropped 9 of their last 11 and are just 1-7 on their current road trip. Plus, this team has never enjoyed the Metrodome. The White Sox are 1-6 at the Dome this season and just 2-15 in their last 17. Danks has been a bright spot for the Sox, but they are just 1-4 in his last 5 starts vs. the American League Central and have lost both of his starts at the Metrodome this season. He doesn't figure to get much run support here. I know Minnesota sends an inexperienced starter to the hill, but I like his chances against the struggling Sox, especially since they aren't familiar with him.

The Royals have lost seven of their last 10 visits to Oakland, and they have been a poor road team all year. Their last three losses were by at least three runs, so play the Run Line.

The Kansas City Royals are a terrible 24-40 on the road this season while getting outscored by a whopping 1.25 runs per game, and they are 3-7 in their last 10 meetings with these Oakland Athletics at McAfee Coliseum.

Oakland took the series opener 8-5 here last night, marking the third loss in four games for the Royals, all of which were by at least three runs. Moreover, the only Kansas City win in this stretch was started by Zack Greinke, and their Tuesday starter Kyle Davies is nowhere near that class.

Davies has had some good moments, but just as he has for his entire career, he is maddeningly inconsistent. Yes, he has two Quality Starts in his last three outings, but that still leaves him with a 5-9 record, a 5.94 ERA and an equally brutal 1.55 WHIP overall this season. Also, true to form, he has alternated good starts and bad starts, putting him in line for a bad one today.

Now granted, Oakland starter Edgar Gonzalez does not have pretty numbers himself, but he did earn this return to the rotation by pitching well in nine of his last 10 outings out of the bullpen. If we toss out his one bad effort during this time, he has a good 3.37 ERA over the other nine appearances. It also helps that the Royals are hitting nearly 20 points lower vs. right-handers (.266) than vs. left-handers (.285) over the last 10 games.

Look for the Kansas City road struggles to continue tonight.

Free Pick: Athletics -1½ (+150)
