WillRogersMLB
Pick: Houston

OFFERED AT:5DIMES @ -1.5 HOU (-120)
The set-up: The San Francisco Giants opened the season 6-10 but moved four games over .500 (19-15) by May 6. However, the Giants pounded out nine runs in back-to-back wins against the Rockies Saturday and Sunday, just to get back to .500 at 24-24. Now, they travel to Houston for a brief two-game interleague series with the defending champion Astros, who are 30-18. San Francisco's offense could have a harder time finding runs when it visits the best pitching staff in the majors, as the Astros own the best ERA in the majors at 2.43, nearly a run better than the next-best team, and will throw the top two starters in the American League, at least in terms of ERA at the Giants Tuesday and Wednesday.

The pitching matchup: San Francisco lefty Andrew Suarez (1-3, 4.88 ERA) will square off tonight up against Houston's Gerrit Cole (4-1, 1.75 ERA). Suarez is a rookie, who earned his first win by not allowing an earned run over 5 1/3 innings at Atlanta on May 6 (Giants won 4-3) but struggled to find that same form over his last two outings. He was ripped for a total of 10 runs (nine earned) on 15 hits in 10 innings against Cincinnati and Pittsburgh in his last two starts. Suarez owns 28 strikeouts and just five walks in 27 2/3 innings this season but has been reached for six HRs. Cole starts in the series opener and Justin Verlander closes out the brief set Wednesday. Could the Giants be catching Cole at the right time? He is coming off his worst outing of the season, allowing three runs on five hits in a season-low five innings at the Angels last Tuesday. However, Cole still notched seven strikeouts in that outing to boost his AL-leading total to 93 in 61 2/3 innings, and his .166 batting-average against ranks second in the majors behind Verlander. He is 4-1 with a 3.18 ERA in six career starts against San Francisco.

The pick: What a one-two 'punch' the Astros will be throwing up against the Giants. Houston's staff has allowed three or fewer runs in 12 of the team's last 13 games and one or zero runs in seven of those contests, including a 3-1 triumph over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday that gave the team its fourth straight series win. The Astros are now two games up in the AL West and the team's 30-18 record trails only AL East 'heavyweights,' New York and Boston. Lay the 1 1/2 runs and take Cole and Houston.

TeddyCoversMLB
Pick: St. Louis

OFFERED AT:5DIMES @ -1.5 STL (-115)
1* Take St Louis (#929) -1.5 on the Run Line
Jason Hammel has no business as a regular starter in Ned Yost’s rotation. The 35 year old veteran has bounced around with the Rays, Rockies, Orioles, A’s, Cubs and Royals over the last decade; never lasting long enough to get re-signed at any spot. After starting 30 games for the Cubs in 2016, Chicago left his off their World Series roster; a clear indicator of their opinion of Hammel moving forward.
No surprise that Chicago dumped him after 2016. Hammel’s 2017 campaign in Kansas City can only be described as ‘ugly’; start to finish. His ERA was above 5.00 at home, on the road, in day games, in night games, pre All Star Break and post All Star Break. But the Royals signed him to a three year deal, so here is Hammel trotting out there every five days for a team playing sub .300 baseball (14-33) to get lit up.
KC is 1-8 in Hammel’s nine starts this season; not exactly going into today’s game with a sense of confidence. The lone win came in a game where Hammel left with a 9-4 deficit before a big (and very rare this season) KC rally. Hammel’s last four starts have been particularly rough: 25 earned runs allowed on 34 hits and seven walks in just 21 innings of work. The Royals bullpen behind him is anything but fresh – none of their last four starters has been able to complete the sixth inning.
KC isn’t likely to be able to slug their way to victory here either. Luke Weaver is coming off back-2-back gems: 12 innings of work, ten strikeouts & only one run allowed on a solo shot. The bullpen behind him is rested and ready off last night’s complete game shutout from Miles Mikolas. And the Cardinals lineup is hitting well for the first time in weeks; pounding out five runs or more five times in their last six ballgames. That stands in sharp contrast to a KC lineup that’s been held to three runs or less seven times in their last nine games. Expect another blowout. Take the Cardinals on the Run Line.

Pick: Milwaukee

OFFERED AT:5DIMES @ MIL (-133)
D'Backs vs Brewers Free Pick May 22, 2018.

The Milwaukee Brewers have won eight of their last 11 overall, and they beat Arizona by a score of 4-2 in Game 1 of this home series last night. I like the Brew Crew as a small favorite here in Game 2.

Jhoulys Chacin will toe the slab for Milwaukee, and he's having a fine season for the Brewers. Chacin (3-1, 3.63 ERA) allowed one run on just two hits, fanning seven in seven innings in a no decision at Arizona his last time out. He's 1-1 with a 2.04 ERA in three home starts, and Milwaukee is 7-3 in his 10 starts overall this season.

The D'Backs hand the ball to Matt Koch, who has been rocked in back to back starts after winning three of his first four. He gave up 11 runs on 16 hits over 12 1/3 innings in home losses to Washington and Milwaukee in his last two starts. He also surrendered a whopping six home runs in those two games.

Paul Goldschmidt's struggles have continued. He was 0-for-3 in last night's loss and he's batting .104 in the month of May. A.J. Pollock leads the team in hits, home runs and RBIs, and he remains out with a thumb injury.

Take MIL.

GL,

Jesse Schule

Pick: Pittsburgh

OFFERED AT:5DIMES @ PIT (-130)
Ben Burns is off a 6-1 Monday that included a top-rated winner at the ballpark. He's now 51-30 his L81 top-rated MLB plays and his 2018 GAME OF THE YEAR goes today. Here, he looks at the Pirates/Reds contest.
Both teams had yesterday off. Both are going to be hungry to get back on track today; the Pirates have lost three straight while the Reds have lost their last two. Pittsburgh should have a much better chance of victory. In addition to having a superb 1.98 ERA his last three starts overall, Taillon has also dominated the Reds the last two times that he's faced them. In fact, he's delivered 15 shutout innings in his last two starts against them, the Pirates winning by a combined score of 10-0. (Last time he saw them, he tossed a complete game 1-hitter.) Meanwhile, Harvey's teams are 1-4 his five career starts against the Pirates. Harvey gave up six runs in five innings the last time he started against Pittsburgh, his team losing 12-7. The Pirates average 4.9 runs per game, 4.5 on the road. The Reds, on the other hand, average 4.0 runs per game, just 3.7 at home. Pittsburgh hits .260 as a team, Cincy hits .238. Consider PITTSBURGH.

Pick: Chi. Cubs

OFFERED AT:5DIMES @ CHC (102)
This is a 1* Bonus Play on the Chicago Cubs (7:05 EST).
I think this one favors the home side in the opener of this interleague series.
The visitors hand the ball to Trevor Bauer (3-3, 2.59 ERA) who comes in off eight scoreless against the anemic Tigers on Wednesday. It’s hard to say anything negative about Bauer, so I won’t bother. I simply feel that he’s in the wrong place at the wrong time tonight.
The home side counters with Tyler Chatwood (3-3, 3.14) who gave up four runs off four hits and two walks with two K’s over 5.1 innings in a no-decision to the Braves on Wednesday. Chatwood hasn’t been perfect this season, but his ERA is solid and note that he’s been at his best at home by going 7-3 with a 2.98 ERA thus far.
I’ll point out additionally that the Cubs are 8-4 (+1.9 units) this year against clubs with losing records, while the Tribe is just 7-15 (-12.4 units) against teams with winning records.
I like Chatwood to continue his strong play at home and for Bauer to come up short in this difficult assignment. Consider the Cubs on Tuesday night.
Good luck…Larry

Pick: Washington

OFFERED AT:5DIMES @ -1.5 WAS (110)
The Washington Nationals were swept by the Dodgers over the weekend, but they snapped the three-game slide with a convincing 10-2 triumph over the San Diego Padres on Monday.
I think this looks like a good spot to back the Nats to record another big win as the Padres send struggling left-hander Eric Lauer (1-2, 8.14 ERA) to the mound. The 22 year old rookie has been tagged with 10 runs on 13 hits with four homers through his last seven innings of work, and he has posted a 9.24 ERA in three starts on the road this season.
The Nats hand the ball to right-hander Jeremy Hellickson (1-0, 2.20 ERA). He has allowed just one run through his last three starts, including 6 2/3 scoreless frames against the Padres earlier this month.
Free pick on Washington Nationals.
