GAME: Houston Astros (58-27) at Toronto Blue Jays (39-45)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 06 - 7:07 PM EST
WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The major league-best Houston Astros have lifted their offense a few more notches in July and look to continue the onslaught when they visit the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday for the opener of their four-game series. The Astros posted 41 runs and 57 hits while winning all four contests thus far this month, capping a two-game demolition of Atlanta with a 10-4 triumph on Wednesday for their 20th win in 23 road contests.

George Springer went 9-for-15 with four extra-base hits over the last three games to key the surge and All-Star Carlos Correa (thumb), who could return after missing Wednesday’s win, has hit safely in 13 straight contests (21-for-50). First time All-Star Lance McCullers Jr. takes the mound for the Astros to try to turn around his recent fortunes while the Blue Jays counter with the veteran Francisco Liriano in the series opener. Toronto answered a five-game losing streak by winning the last two of a three-game series against the fading New York Yankees, as four different players belted homers in Wednesday's 7-6 triumph - including All-Star Justin Smoak. Jose Bautista is 6-for-13 with four walks during his four-game hitting streak, but teammate Josh Donaldson sat out Wednesday and is mired in a 1-for-23 slump.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, MLB Network, ROOT Southwest (Houston), Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Lance McCullers Jr. (7-1, 2.69 ERA) vs. Blue Jays LH Francisco Liriano (4-4, 5.66)

McCullers went unbeaten in May and June, but he begins his July slate after failing to complete at least six innings in three of his last four starts. The 23-year-old Tampa native, who has recorded 103 strikeouts in 87 frames, gave up three runs and six hits over 5 1/3 innings of a no-decision versus the Yankees on Friday. Bautista is 2-for-3 with a homer against McCullers, who allowed two runs over 4 2/3 frames to lose his only start versus Toronto.

Liriano permitted five runs in six innings last time out against Boston to lose for the second time in three outings and remain at 100 career wins. The 33-year-old Dominican is averaging fewer than five innings per start, but he has made it through at least six frames in three of his last four outings. Evan Gattis is 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles versus Liriano, who is 1-1 with a 4.61 ERA in two career starts against Houston.

WALK-OFFS

1. Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki (19 RBIs, 50 games) went 4-for-9 in the last two games to raise his batting average to .242.

2. Gattis has hit safely in eight straight contests for Houston while OF Josh Reddick is 12-for-25 with 12 RBIs in his last six starts.

3. Toronto C Miguel Montero went 0-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in his debut with the team on Wednesday.

GAME: Boston Red Sox (49-36) at Tampa Bay Rays (44-42)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 06 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Boston Red Sox have been playing as well as any team in the majors of late and are guaranteed of at least being tied for first place in the American League East at the All-Star break. The Tampa Bay Rays, who host the Red Sox on Thursday for the opener of a four-game series that closes the first half, are creeping up on second place in the East but come home with an empty feeling after a 4-4 road trip.

The Rays gave themselves a chance at a winning trip by holding off the Chicago Cubs 6-5 on Tuesday but could not muster the same offensive surge while falling 7-3 in the finale of the two-game interleague series. Logan Morrison, who is up for the final spot on the AL All-Star team and made some waves over the long weekend by suggesting he should have been asked to participate in the Home Run Derby, remained hot with two hits in Wednesday's loss and has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games. Boston was full of hot hitters before managing a total of three hits in an 8-2 setback at Texas on Wednesday that snapped its six-game winning streak. Trying to keep the Red Sox's attack down will be promising rookie Jacob Faria, who takes the mound for Tampa Bay on Thursday opposite All-Star Chris Sale.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NESN (Boston), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Chris Sale (11-3, 2.61 ERA) vs. Rays RH Jacob Faria (3-0, 2.23)

Sale is a strong candidate to get the start for the AL in Tuesday's All-Star Game and leads the majors with 166 strikeouts. The Florida Gulf Coast product breezed through seven scoreless innings at Toronto on Saturday, scattering four hits and striking out 11 in his third straight win. Sale made two starts against Tampa Bay earlier in the season and won both while yielding four runs and five hits with 24 strikeouts in 14 frames.

Faria recorded a quality start in each of his first five major-league outings but was kept out of the win column in the last two. The 23-year-old has registered 35 strikeouts in 32 1/3 overall innings and did not walk a batter while holding Baltimore to two earned runs in 6 2/3 frames on Friday. Faria is making his third home start and is 1-0 with a 2.92 ERA so far at Tropicana Field.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rays CF Mallex Smith went 4-for-4 on Wednesday and is 7-for-13 with five runs scored in his last three games.

2. Boston RHP Matt Barnes has not allowed a hit in any of his last five appearances, totaling 5 2/3 innings.

3. Tampa Bay INF Brad Miller (groin) is on a rehab assignment and could return to the team during the series this weekend.

GAME: San Diego Padres (36-48) at Cleveland Indians (44-39)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 06 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Cleveland Indians haven't fared well without Terry Francona, and they are unlikely to see their manager in the dugout in the near future as they attempt to sort out their troubles both at Progressive Field and in interleague play. Francona, 58, is expected to remain hospitalized as doctors attempt to pinpoint his medical issues on Thursday while the Indians bid to salvage the finale of a three-game set versus the visiting San Diego Padres.

Francisco Lindor drove in a pair of runs to highlight his three-hit performance in Wednesday's 6-2 setback for Cleveland, which fell to 18-23 at home and 2-11 against the National League. All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez added his 27th double to extend his hitting streak to seven games, during which he is 10-for-28 with three homers and seven RBIs. While the Indians aren't giving the home fans much to cheer, the Padres find themselves in an unfamiliar place with a three-game winning streak on the road to improve to 14-26 away from Petco Park. Cory Spangenberg had the lone RBI in the series opener and followed that up with a two-run blast on Wednesday for San Diego, which has won eight of its last 12 overall.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, STO (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Dinelson Lamet (3-2, 5.35 ERA) vs. Indians RH Josh Tomlin (4-9, 6.17)

Lamet recorded his first victory in nearly one month on Thursday after scattering four hits and striking out eight in a career-high seven innings of a 6-0 romp against Atlanta. The 24-year-old Dominican has permitted just five earned runs and 11 hits to go along with 25 strikeouts in his three consecutive quality starts (19 innings), but has just a 1-0 mark to show for it. Lamet has limited the opposition to a .159 batting average in that stretch for San Diego, which is 5-2 in games he has started.

Tomlin owns a 1-3 mark with a 6.90 ERA in his last six starts after receiving a no-decision against Detroit on Saturday. The 32-year-old surrendered back-to-back homers to J.D. Martinez and Miguel Cabrera in his 4 2/3-inning stint versus the Tigers and has been taken deep eight times in his last four outings. Tomlin lamented his latest bout with the long ball, telling reporters that part of the problem was he "was just behind in too many counts."

WALK-OFFS

1. San Diego OF Jose Pirela enjoyed a three-hit performance on Wednesday to improve to 6-for-13 with three RBIs and two runs scored in his last three games.

2. Cleveland DH Edwin Encarnacion is 0-for-7 with four strikeouts in the last two contests.

3. Padres RF Hunter Renfroe is 1-for-9 with six strikeouts in the series.

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (40-44) at Minnesota Twins (43-41)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 06 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Minnesota Twins failed to make up ground in the American League Central on Wednesday with a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, but they will have a good chance to recapture the top spot this weekend. The surprising Twins, who trail first-place Cleveland by 1 ½ games in the division race, host the struggling Baltimore Orioles on Thursday for the opener of a four-game series that leads into the All-Star break.

Minnesota failed in an attempt to record its sixth sweep of the season with Wednesday’s setback, but second baseman Brian Dozier (back) returned to the lineup after missing two contests and extended his hitting streak to five games. Jose Berrios hopes to rebound from his worst start of 2017 when he takes the mound for the Twins in the opener against Baltimore ace Dylan Bundy, who looks to recapture his form from the first two months of the year. The Orioles had won four of five to vault back into the AL East race but have gone 1-5 since and managed three runs while getting swept in three games at Milwaukee earlier in the week. Minnesota took three straight in Baltimore from May 22-24, outscoring the Orioles 20-10 in the process as Max Kepler knocked in five runs.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, MASN2 (Baltimore), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Dylan Bundy (8-7, 4.02 ERA) vs. Twins RH Jose Berrios (7-2, 3.44)

Bundy has faded a bit since a strong showing over the first two months of the season, when he posted a 2.89 ERA, by going just 2-4 over his last six starts and completing more than five innings twice in that span. The 24-year-old Oklahoma native suffered a tough-luck loss in his first career start against Minnesota on May 23, giving up two runs, six hits and three walks with seven strikeouts over seven frames in a 2-0 setback. Dozier homered off Bundy in that contest.

Berrios allowed season highs of five runs and nine hits over five innings at Kansas City last time out, but he was able to avoid a loss in the 11-6 setback. The 23-year-old Puerto Rican has worked at least six frames in seven of his 10 starts this year after accomplishing the feat once in 14 outings last year. Manny Machado is 3-for-5 with a homer versus Berrios, who permitted three runs and four hits over 6 1/3 innings on May 24 to defeat Baltimore.

WALK-OFFS

1. Orioles LHP Zach Britton was activated Wednesday after missing two months with a forearm injury, allowing one hit and one walk in one inning at Milwaukee.

2. Minnesota placed LHP Hector Santiago (back) on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday and recalled RHP Alan Busenitz from Triple-A Rochester.

3. Baltimore CF Adam Jones has gone eight games without an RBI, remaining one behind Ken Singleton (766) for fifth place on the franchise list.

GAME: Oakland Athletics (37-48) at Seattle Mariners (41-45)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 06 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Oakland Athletics have been very streaky over the last month but currently are on an upward swing and look to continue it when they visit the Seattle Mariners on Thursday for the opener of their four-game series. Oakland has endured slides of six, four and six contests since June 7, with a pair of four-game winning streaks in between, but are coming off back-to-back home triumphs over the Chicago White Sox.

Jed Lowrie enters the set swinging a hot bat, as he recorded three hits and two RBIs in Wednesday's 7-4 victory to cap a 5-for-11 performance in the three-game series against Chicago. The Mariners hope to break out of their funk at Safeco Field and record the first victory on their seven-game homestand after being swept in a three-game set by Kansas City. Seattle built a lead after allowing four runs in the opening frame but squandered it en route to a 9-6 defeat in 10 innings on Wednesday that ran its home losing streak to seven games. One positive of late for the Mariners has been slugger Nelson Cruz, who is 4-for-6 - including his first homer since June 4 on Wednesday - and four RBIs over his last two games.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Oakland), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Paul Blackburn (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Sam Gaviglio (3-3, 3.48)

Blackburn was impressive in his major-league debut on Saturday, allowing an unearned run and three hits over six innings of a no-decision against Atlanta. The 23-year-old Californian posted a 5-6 record and 3.05 ERA in 15 appearances (14 starts) for Triple-A Nashville before being promoted. Blackburn will be starting against his former organization, as he was acquired from Seattle in November for Danny Valencia.

Gaviglio is winless in his last three starts despite allowing three runs or fewer each time. The 27-year-old native of Oregon suffered his second straight loss Saturday, when he gave up three runs and five hits over a career-high 6 1/3 innings in a road game against the Los Angeles Angels in his ninth career turn. Gaviglio, who will be facing Oakland for the first time, has worked at least five innings in each of his starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Athletics INF Ryon Healy (back), who has been sidelined since Sunday, owns a .308 batting average with five homers and 11 RBIs in 17 career games versus Seattle.

2. Mariners SS Jean Segura is 10-for-19 with a homer and and five RBIs over his last four games, recording three multi-hit performances in that span.

3. Oakland placed Josh Phegley on the paternity list and purchased the contract of fellow C Ryan Lavarnway from Nashville.

GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (52-33) at Los Angeles Dodgers (57-29)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 06 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The red-hot Los Angeles Dodgers have opened up a season-high 4 1/2-game lead over Arizona in the National League West as they look to complete a three-game sweep of the visiting Diamondbacks on Thursday. Los Angeles allowed just three runs while winning the first two games and has been victorious in 22 of its last 26 contests.

Yasmani Grandal drilled an RBI double for the only offense on Wednesday as the Dodgers recorded a 1-0 win - their fifth shutout victory over the last 15 games. Los Angeles has won 14 of its last 15 at Dodger Stadium and possesses a major league-best 35-11 home record. The Diamondbacks have scored in just one inning in the series - three runs in the ninth on Tuesday - and have lost five of their last seven contests. All-Star Paul Goldschmidt is mired in a 4-for-28 funk over his last eight games, with his lone RBI in that span coming on a solo homer.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks LH Robbie Ray (8-4, 3.06 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Rich Hill (5-4, 4.00)

Ray is headed to his first All-Star Game due to his overpowering stuff that has him tied with Washington's Stephen Strasburg for third in the NL with 128 strikeouts. The 25-year-old has been superb on the road, going 4-1 with a 1.32 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and .165 batting average against in seven outings. Ray is 1-0 with a 4.76 ERA in two starts against the Dodgers this year - and 4-3 with a 3.30 ERA in 10 career outings - while shutting down Justin Turner (3-for-17).

Hill matched his career best of 11 strikeouts while defeating San Diego in his last turn, when he allowed just four hits over seven scoreless innings. The 37-year-old has given up a total of 14 hits and posted a 1.33 ERA in his five victories. Hill is 1-3 with a 4.73 ERA in six career starts against the Diamondbacks, including a loss on April 16 in which he gave up two runs and five hits over three frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Turner is 9-for-21 with three homers in his last six contests.

2. Arizona C/OF Chris Herrmann is 1-for-18 over his last six games.

3. Los Angeles OF/1B Cody Bellinger, tied with Cincinnati's Joey Votto for the NL home-run lead, is 5-for-33 without a blast in his last nine contests.

MLB | Orioles vs Twins
Play on: Twins -138 at BMaker

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach Free Pick Thursday MLB Minnesota Twins Money Line (-) vs Baltimore Orioles @ 8:10 ET - The Twins Jose Berrios had a rare, tough outing his last time out but that was on the road. He is 3-1 at home this season with a 2.51 ERA and a minuscule 0.80 WHIP. The Twins are off of a tight 2-1 home loss yesterday and will bounce back here against the Orioles and a struggling Dylan Bundy. As regular followers know, I rarely play favorites in MLB as most of my selections are dogs and totals. However, this line has gone from as high as a -160 down to as low as the -135 range and this is exceptional line value to take Berrios at home. Note that Bundy has struggled overall in his last 4 starts as he has allowed 19 runs (18 earned) in 20 and 2/3 innings spanning those 4 outings. Also, Bundy has walked 7 batters in his last 12 innings on the road. Though the Twins lost yesterday, that followed a 4-1 run in Minnesota's last 5 home games. As for the Orioles, they've been anything but hot as their loss yesterday brought them to 1-5 in their last 6 games. Overall, Baltimore is 14-28 on the road this season! The Twins are 27-19 and +$9,600 in night games this season. Look for another win under the lights in this one! Free Pick on MINNESOTA TWINS on the money line Thursday evening. Best of luck, Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach
