CFL Betting Recap - Week 2

League Betting Notes

-- Favorites/underdogs went 2-2 SU in Week 2
-- Underdogs went 4-0 ATS in Week 2
-- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 SU record in Week 2
-- Road teams posted a 4-0 ATS record in Week 2
-- The 'Over/under' went 2-2 in Week 2

Analysis

If you're scoring at home, so far it's been a day for the 'dogs in Canadian Football League action. Underdogs were also a perfect 4-0 ATS in Week 1, bringing the total so far this season 0-8 ATS so far for the favorites. Road teams have hit at a 6-2 ATS clip so far, a trend we saw often during the early going during the 2016 season. In fact, road teams started out 16-2-2 ATS through the first five weeks last season, and 29-9-2 ATS through the first 10 weeks until home teams finally covered in a majority of the games. That didn't occur until a five-week slate in Week 11 when home teams finally posted a 4-1 ATS mark.

As far as the total is concerned, the 'under has edged out the 'over' 5-3 through two weeks. Last season in Week 1 we saw a 2-2 split, followed by six consecutive weeks with the under dominating at 3-1, or 2-1-1 in Week 3. The under was 19-8-1 through the first seven weeks until a 2-2 split in Week 8, followed by the first over majority in Week 9 when the offenses finally started to take control.

Might we see a similar trend in Week 3 and beyond? We'll see. So far only the two Grey Cup participants from last season, Calgary (1-0-1) and Ottawa (0-1-1) look to be the dominant offenses again, while perhaps Winnipeg (1-0) and maybe BC Lions (1-1) look to have any semblance of consistency in the early going.

Team Betting Notes

-- The two Grey Cup combatants from last season played a second consecutive game, this time on the plains of Southern Alberta. It didn't end in a tie like last week's opener in Canada's capital city. However, it was a familiar result for the RedBlacks, who fell 43-39 in Calgary. Ottawa fell to 0-1-1 SU, although they're an impressive 2-0 ATS on the season. And really, they won the matchup that mattered in the Grey Cup last season.

-- The Stampeders are 3-0-2 SU in the past five regular season meetings with the RedBlacks. One thing that is certain, there will be a lot of points when the teams clash. The over is 6-0-1 in the past seven meetings, and 7-1-1 in nine all-time battles.

-- Toronto (1-1) is on deck for Ottawa, as they search for their first victory in a return home in Week 3. The Argos won as 3 1/2-point 'dogs in Week 1 against Hamilton (0-1), but it was BC coming in and spoiling the party by a 28-15 count with the Argos favored by two points at Rogers Centre on Friday. The 'under' has cashed in each of Toronto's games so far, but that will be put to the test in Week 3 against the high-scoring RedBlacks.

-- Winnipeg (1-0) kicked off its season after a bye in Week 1, and they won a thriller in Saskatchewan (0-2) by a 43-40 count in overtime. The Bombers fell behind 10-0 after the opening quarter, and a late flurry by the Riders forced OT. But Winnipeg capped it off in the extra session, and they might be an offense to monitor.

-- For the Roughriders, they're 0-2 SU, but they have lost by a total of four points through two games. They look much improved and they're averaging 28.0 PPG despite the two setbacks. Next up they will face a second straight opponent coming off a bye as the TiCats visit Regina.

-- As mentioned, the Lions went to Toronto and won. That erased a sour taste in their mouth following a 30-27 setback in the opener against the Eskimos. BC's defense was much better, allowing just 15 points to the Argos, and the 'under' has now hit in each of their two outings. They'll travel to Montreal (1-1) in Week 3, facing an Alouettes team which has also had the 'under' hit in their two contests.

-- The Eskimos are averaging 26.5 points per game so far, but it's their defense which has been the story in their two victories. The Esks are holding opponents to 23.0 points per game, including just 19 against the Alouettes. The 'under' has hit in each of their two outings.

Thursday's CFL betting preview and odds: Lions at Alouettes

BC has won back-to-back meetings in Quebec, including a 38-18 triumph last season, while averaging 33.6 points during its three-game winning streak against Montreal.

B.C. Lions at Montreal Alouettes (+2.5, 50)

The BC Lions look to continue their recent dominance of East Division opponents when they stay on the road to face the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday. The Lions scored the final 18 points en route to a 28-15 victory over the Toronto Argonauts in Week 2 to improve to 8-1 in their last nine games against East Division foes, and hope to stay on the winning track by beating the Alouettes for the fourth consecutive time.

BC has won back-to-back meetings in Quebec, including a 38-18 triumph last season, while averaging 33.6 points during its three-game winning streak against Montreal. The Alouettes let one slip away in the 23-19 defeat to the Edmonton Eskimos last week. Montreal failed to punch the ball into the end zone on multiple trips to the red zone, including a first-and-goal from the Edmonton 1-yard line in the third quarter, and hopes its sputtering offence, which is averaging 18 points, can find its top gear, as the Alouettes search for their first victory against BC since Aug. 20, 2015. "We have to be better as an offence," Montreal running back Tyrell Sutton told reporters. "We have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot and score points."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN, ESPNews

LINE HISTORY: The Lions opened as three-point road favorites and that number was bet down slightly to 2.5. The total hit the bettings boards at 48.5 and was bumped up to 50.

ABOUT THE LIONS (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS, 0-2 O/U): Jeremiah Johnson continued his strong start to the season as the league leader in rushing yards (162) and touchdowns (two) gained 70 yards on the ground to go along with his game-clinching score against Toronto. Jonathon Jennings threw for 301 yards and a touchdown, with Bryan Burnham the main beneficiary of Jennings' big night as he caught nine passes for 118 yards despite playing with a sore leg. Rookie Ty Long made 3-of-3 field goal attempts, but struggled with his punting while deputizing for an injured Swayze Waters, who should be ready to go in Montreal after suffering a thigh injury in training camp.

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS, 0-2 O/U): Free agent signing Ryan Phillips, a defensive back who spent the previous 12 seasons with the Lions, left the game in the second quarter with an undisclosed injury and his status is unknown for Thursday. Darian Durant went 14-of-24 for 166 yards and a touchdown, but threw a costly interception in the fourth quarter, which led to Edmonton's go-ahead score. Veteran wide receiver Nik Lewis continues to perform at a high level as he caught five passes for 42 yards to move past Hall of Famer Ray Elgaard (13,198) into seventh place on the league's all-time receiving yards list.

BETTING TRENDS:

* Lions are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games as a favorite of 0.5-3.0.
* Alouettes are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games as a home underdog of 0.5-3.0.
* Under is 6-1 in Lions last 7 games in Week 3.
* Under is 10-2 in Alouettes last 12 Thursday games.
* Lions are 26-9 ATS in their last 35 meetings.

CONSENSUS: The road chalk Lions are getting 65 percent of the action from users and the Under is picking up 53 percent of the totals wagers.

EXTRA POINTS:

* BC leads the CFL in rushing yards (227) and rushing touchdowns (three).
* Durant is averaging 199.5 passing yards per game, which is the lowest among CFL starting quarterbacks.
* Montreal has dropped seven of its last nine games against West Division opponents.

GAME: San Francisco Giants (34-52) at Detroit Tigers (37-46)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 06 - 1:10 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Buster Posey gave his catching equipment a break and served as the San Francisco Giants' designated hitter in the first two contests of a three-game interleague series versus the host Detroit Tigers. After going hitless in six at-bats, Posey is expected to don the mask and be behind the plate on Thursday afternoon as the teams play the rubber match of their series at Comerica Park.

While Posey has struggled, Hunter Pence has come up with the timely hit as the 34-year-old followed up his solo homer in Tuesday's 5-3 setback with a two-run triple to highlight a three-RBI performance in a 5-4 win the following night. Pence is starting to heat up again after batting .310 in June, and is 6-for-18 in his career versus Thursday starter Anibal Sanchez. While San Francisco has answered a disastrous 1-12 stretch by winning seven of its last eight, Detroit has surrendered 23 runs en route to losing three of its last four. Victor Martinez has collected two hits and two RBIs in both contests of this series after going 1-for-16 in his previous four games.

TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Johnny Cueto (6-7, 4.26 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Anibal Sanchez (0-0, 6.34)

Cueto recorded his first win in over a month on Friday after allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings of a 13-5 rout at Pittsburgh. The 31-year-old Dominican continues to struggle with his control as he walked four batters versus the Pirates and has issued at least three free passes in four of his last five outings. Cueto will be facing the Tigers for the first time since the 2015 season, during which he posted a 1-2 mark with a 2.88 ERA.

Sanchez has answered a four-start stint with Triple-A Toledo with three straight no-decisions, including Saturday's performance in which he permitted three runs on four hits in a season-high 6 1/3 innings against Cleveland. The 33-year-old Venezuelan was in line for the win until reliever Daniel Stumpf surrendered a two-run homer to Indians slugger Carlos Santana. Sanchez owns a 3-1 mark with a 1.98 ERA in five career starts versus San Francisco, although he hasn't faced the club since 2012.

WALK-OFFS

1. Detroit 3B Nicholas Castellanos has a homer, five RBIs and three runs scored during his five-game hitting streak.

2. San Francisco 1B Brandon Belt is 7-for-20 with two homers, eight RBIs and five runs scored in his last five contests.

3. Both teams sport identical 3-6 interleague records.

GAME: Miami Marlins (38-45) at St. Louis Cardinals (40-44)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 06 - 1:45 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The St. Louis Cardinals looked at their last two series before the All-Star break and saw a path to .500, but things aren’t breaking their way. The Cardinals will try to earn a split when they host the Miami Marlins on Thursday afternoon for the finale of their four-game series.

St. Louis earned series wins over Arizona and Washington before taking the first contest against the Marlins on Monday but fell off the pace by losing the last two. The Cardinals, who close the first half with a three-game home set against the New York Mets this weekend, are having some trouble keeping the Marlins in the park as they yielded four home runs in Wednesday’s 9-6 setback. Two of those blasts came from Giancarlo Stanton, who tuned up to defend his Home Run Derby crown on Monday by blasting his 22nd and 23rd shots of the campaign. Trying to keep Stanton and company in the yard on Thursday will be Michael Wacha, who opposes Miami’s Tom Koehler.

TV: 1:45 p.m. ET, FSN Florida (Miami), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Tom Koehler (1-3, 8.33 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (5-3, 4.16)

Koehler returned to Miami's rotation for the first time since May 16 on Saturday and was lit up for seven runs on six hits and a pair of walks in 1 2/3 innings. The New York native did not complete six frames in any of his last five major-league appearances and has surrendered 11 home runs in 40 overall innings. Koehler started against St. Louis on May 10 and did not factor in the decision after allowing four runs and five hits in 5 1/3 frames.

Wacha dominated in his last two turns, recording a pair of wins while allowing a total of one run and nine hits in 12 innings. The Texas A&M product struck out a season-high nine over six frames against Washington on Saturday while issuing one walk. Wacha, who has surrendered a total of one home run in his last five turns, is 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in two career starts against Miami.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cardinals rookie OF Tommy Phan is 6-for-15 with seven RBIs in his last four contests.

2. St. Louis OF Randal Grichuk is 2-for-21 with nine strikeouts over his last six games.

3. Miami 1B Justin Bour is one of five players vying for the final NL All-Star spot, with voting to conclude Thursday afternoon, and snapped a 13-game homerless drought on Wednesday.

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (47-40) at Chicago Cubs (42-42)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 06 - 2:20 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon isn’t worried about scoreboard-watching just yet, but his team can pick up a game in the standings when the Cubs host the Milwaukee Brewers for a make-up contest Thursday afternoon. The Brewers lead the National League Central by 3 1/2 games over the defending World Series champions.

The upstart Brewers have shown no signs of fading, as they completed a three-game sweep of visiting Baltimore on Wednesday and have won six of their last seven to match their high-water mark for the season at seven games over .500. Maddon isn’t concerned that Milwaukee holds its biggest division lead so far this season, in part because he knows the teams meet 10 more times after Thursday’s clash, providing plenty of opportunities to make up ground. "I don't worry about what the other teams are doing,” Maddon told reporters. “I know we're a couple games back, but that's not a concern because I do believe if we play our game, it will take care of itself." The Cubs lead the season series 5-3 and have outscored the Brewers 54-41.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Zach Davies (9-4, 5.03 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Mike Montgomery (1-5, 2.80)

Davies has won his last two starts and four of his last five decisions. The 24-year-old was dinged for four early runs last time out against Miami, but he retired the last 10 batters he faced and the Brewers rallied to earn him the win. Davies lost to the Cubs on April 9 in Milwaukee, allowing five runs and seven hits over five innings, and is 3-3 with a 4.91 ERA in six career meetings.

Montgomery has pitched at least six innings in three straight outings, but he has lost his last two starts. The 28-year-old recorded a season-high seven strikeouts last time out at Cincinnati, but he gave up four runs and nine hits over 6 2/3 innings in a 5-0 defeat. Montgomery has faced the Brewers four times in relief this season, going 0-2 and allowing four earned runs over eight innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Milwaukee 3B Travis Shaw has gone 54 consecutive games without an error, the third-longest single-season streak for a third baseman in franchise history.

2. Cubs OF/2B Ian Happ is 10-for-28 with six RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 14 of his last 15 games.

3. Brewers LF Ryan Braun is a career .344 hitter at Wrigley Field with 13 home runs and 59 RBIs in 69 games.

GAME: Cincinnati Reds (36-48) at Colorado Rockies (50-37)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 06 - 3:10 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Colorado Rockies are hoping their deep slump is behind them as they look to win a four-game series from the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Thursday afternoon. The Rockies have won two of the first three contests after Wednesday's 5-3 triumph, which was only their third victory in the last 14 games.

All-Star Nolan Arenado has gone 15 games without a home run as Colorado's fortunes plummeted and had his seven-game hitting streak halted on Wednesday. Pat Valaika recorded half of the Rockies' hits by going 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs. Cincinnati has dropped 16 of its last 19 road contests and is a meager 13-28 away from home. The versatile Scooter Gennett is 6-for-10 with two blasts and four RBIs in the series and has gone deep 11 times in his last 24 contests.

TV: 3:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Sal Romano (0-1, 6.00 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Tyler Chatwood (6-9, 4.41)

Romano is making his second major-league start after lasting just three innings in his first, giving up three runs - two earned - and three hits while losing to Milwaukee on April 16. The 23-year-old has gone 1-3 with a 3.06 ERA in nine turns at Triple-A Louisville this season and said he is much more comfortable ahead of Thursday's outing. "I think I'm a lot more relaxed and not as nervous. I want to feel like I belong," Romano told reporters. "I'm not going to try to overthrow. I will work my 93-95 (miles per hour); that's when my sinker is at its best. I still have 96, 97 and 98 in the tank, and there are certain times I can use that."

Chatwood has dropped consecutive turns and is winless in his last four outings. The 27-year-old has experienced big troubles at Coors Field this season, going 2-4 with a 6.39 ERA and 1.71 WHIP in seven starts. Chatwood is 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in three career turns against the Reds but has limited Joey Votto to one hit in five at-bats.

WALK-OFFS

1. Reds LF Adam Duvall is 1-for-13 with five strikeouts over his last four games.

2. Colorado 2B DJ LeMahieu (groin) has missed the last two contests and is questionable for the series finale.

3. Cincinnati C Devin Mesoraco (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day disabled list and RHP Ariel Hernandez was recalled from Triple-A Louisville to fill the roster opening.

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (39-46) at Philadelphia Phillies (28-55)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 06 - 6:05 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Pittsburgh Pirates have benefited from a pair of strong starting pitching performances to post consecutive victories on the heels of a four-game losing skid. The Pirates will bid to improve their season mark to 5-2 against the host Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday when they turn to Chad Kuhl for the finale of a four-game set.

Jameson Taillon struck out a career-best nine in five innings in Tuesday's 3-0 triumph and Gerrit Cole fanned eight in six frames the following day while also adding a two-run single in a 5-2 victory. Jordy Mercer drove in his fourth run in six games with an RBI triple to highlight his two-hit performance on Wednesday, but is 0-for-6 in his career versus Thursday starter Jeremy Hellickson. While Pittsburgh has dominated its Keystone State rival to the tune of 27-14 since 2012, Philadelphia's Maikel Franco has fared pretty well against the Pirates this season by going 7-for-24 with two homers, four RBIs and five runs scored. Tommy Joseph collected his first career triple on Wednesday, but is just 2-for-20 in nine games versus Pittsburgh this season.

TV: 6:05 p.m. ET, ROOT Pittsburgh, CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Chad Kuhl (2-6, 5.26 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Jeremy Hellickson (5-5, 4.48)

Kuhl carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning against San Francisco on Saturday and finished the frame having allowed a solo homer to Austin Slater to record his first quality start since April 18. "He knows what the situation is," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said of the 24-year-old. "He wants to pitch deeper into games. He put himself in a situation to do that (in his last start)." Unfortunately for Kuhl, the end result of his strong performance was a no-decision - just like his sterling effort versus Philadelphia on May 21 in which he permitted just one hit and struck out five over five scoreless innings.

Hellickson saw his winless stretch extend to eight starts after receiving his third straight no-decision in Saturday's tilt versus the New York Mets. The 30-year-old surrendered two homers and four runs total over 6 1/3 innings in that contest, but there's reason for optimism on Thursday. Hellickson's last victory came at the expense of Pittsburgh on May 19 as he yielded two runs on as many hits in six innings of a 7-2 triumph.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia CF Odubel Herrera is 5-for-11 in the series after going hitless with six strikeouts in his previous four games.

2. Pittsburgh 2B Josh Harrison is 1-for-19 in his last five games.

3. Phillies LF Daniel Nava has recorded two three-hit performances in July.

GAME: Atlanta Braves (40-43) at Washington Nationals (50-34)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, July 06 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Mike Foltynewicz fell three outs shy of history in his last start, and the Atlanta Braves need another outstanding performance from their hard-throwing right-hander entering Thursday’s series opener at the Washington Nationals. Foltynewicz didn't allow a hit into the ninth inning Friday at Oakland before giving up a leadoff homer to narrowly miss becoming the first Atlanta pitcher in 23 years to throw a no-hitter.

The Braves have won 11 of their past 17 games but were swept in a two-game home series by Houston, being outscored 26-8 in the process. Washington’s series finale against the New York Mets was rained out Wednesday, and the Nationals lead Atlanta by 9 1/2 games in the National League East entering the series. Center fielder Michael Taylor is hitting .298 since April 29, and has belted eight homers since the beginning of June. First baseman Ryan Zimmerman continues a fantastic bounce-back season, entering Wednesday's action fourth in the majors in average (.330) and slugging percentage (.610) while ranking tied for ninth in the NL with 19 homers.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), MASN (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz (6-5, 3.83 ERA) vs. Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (7-3, 2.77)

Foltynewicz’s brush with history capped a strong June in which the 25-year-old finished 3-0 with a 2.97 ERA, allowing two earned runs or fewer five times. The one rough outing came in Washington on June 12, when Foltynewicz lasted just 3 1/3 innings after surrendering eight runs on 11 hits. He lost his first matchup to the Nationals this season on April 18 at home, giving up two runs on five hits in seven innings, but has won six of his past seven decisions after an 0-4 start.

Gonzalez enters the series with the fourth-lowest ERA among left-handed starters, as the 31-year-old is authoring his best season with the Nationals since winning 21 games in 2012. He has lost his past two starts despite allowing a total of one run on four hits with 17 strikeouts, falling to the Cubs and Cardinals after winning four consecutive decisions. Gonzalez faced the Braves on May 19 in Atlanta, getting a no-decision after surrendering four runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Nationals lead the season series 5-4, but Atlanta scored 29 runs to win two of three in Washington last month.

2. Atlanta LF Matt Kemp went 1-for-4 Wednesday, but is hitting just .216 in 28 games since June 3 with seven extra-base hits and nine RBIs.

3. Washington’s bullpen continues to struggle, allowing 16 earned runs in 16 1/3 innings (8.82 ERA) across its past seven games.

PREDICTION: Nationals 4, Braves 3
