If he would have joined Chuck on the effort or even allowed Chuck to take the credit and this would have gotten done before the midterms. Clearly it's now just an anti-Trump move but while I've seen Schumer quoted about this in the past I never saw the tape. In fact, I've even seen lefties ask where the evidence is that Schumer ever campaigned for a southern barrier. Trump could have easily used this in his favor but instead wanted to take the credit and will now never get it funded
The Democratic party wasn't as indebted/reliant on the hispanic vote 10-15-20 years ago and they were relying on more working class whites. That's why you saw some lip service towards border security.

Both parties like mass migration way too much for any Trump policy to pose a halt to it. I respect Trump on this issue perhaps more than any other one, because at least he has the nuts to bring this issue to the forefront. But Republicans like cheap labor too much, and Democrats like banking on minorities for votes too much.
I think it's a great gesture by Trump, and there is no real downside to having a wall. But I also don't think it'll be that effective, as I can't see Trump overpowering the establishment on this issue.
