Lets face it the ultimate marketable athletes are soccer players due to the worldwide exposure. If an American player were to reach a player of the year level for a club like Man U or Real Madrid that would be tough to beat. Internationally he would make a fortune off his notoriety and he would be able to crack some money off the US market. Being a big name in the US market is the only thing that is missing from Beckham being a 500 million kind of celebrity.
