I think some people have trouble seperating Hall of Fame Character with Hall of Fame Baseball Player.

I also feel he was overrated.

Ripken blows away Alan Trammell, who was a very fine player.

people want to look back and compare today's stats with Cal who played way back in the 80's when 4-3 games were common, 30 homers 100 RBI was a great yr.

No. He was at the top for his position in his era. That is HOF deserving. Today he would be the wouldnt be in the top 5 at shortstop. The streak locked it up for him, but I still feel he was at the right position at the right time.

Steve Garvey actually did have a streak, but in no way was he a HOFer, take a good look at Garvey's stats, I recall him having a ridiculously low amount of BBs among other things...he played 1st base too.

he was a very good player...not HOF though.

Didn't Garvey have the NL streak when he retired? It was a big deal back then. You could make a very strong case for Garvey in the HOF.

How can you say he wouldn't benefit from everything else todays players benefit from? Smaller parks, pitchers that are not as good, more teams watered down leagues, bats are made of better wood ....it favors the batter so much more now.

Don't you compare Ripken/Gwynn to players from their era instead of today's players? There are many less meaningful stats today like 500 hrs. Game is much different now with the use of bullpens.

Look for Gossage to make the HOF next year. My prediction.

Take a good look at the HOF before you go calling Ripken 'most overrated'..

Ever heard of Tinkers Evers and Chance?

I apologize if my passion comes off as me being an obnoxious know it all....I have a great sense of humor , but you don't know me either...it goes both ways.

Lighten up Frances.

Geeeez you never seem to be able to take a little verbal sparring. What the hell is wrong with you. You say you don't care but this has struck a nerve for you.

You know Jman not sure why we never seem to have a normal interacton on here. You seem to think you are better than people here. I don't care if you are a mod or not. whoooooopie your a mod. Geez do you ever just joke around or are you always wound up this tight.

Trammell had a great run. He should have started at SS atleast 4 years when Ripken was playing.

hell i am just glad that you cleared up the fact that this thread was nothing but a joke. I was beginning to quesion your intelligence.

If Ozzie Smith and his 28 CAREER HR'S (.328 slugging pct) in nearly 20 years(I cant even say that with a straight face) and .262 career average is a first ballot HOF than that proves the whole thing is a "popularity contest".

Just thought I would join in with this old time RX disagreement.:missingte

Relax fellas. You arent going to prove anything to each other when arguing about each of our boyhood hero's.

My thought's exactly.

I hear what your saying, but anyone that sets arguably the hardest record to beat in sports is a lock for the HOF. It's between DiMaggio's streak and Cal's streak that nobody is going to break for a really, really, really long time.

DiMaggio's 56 game hit streak may be beaten one day,but Ripken's record will never be broken .. Never!

While were on the topic of HOF'ers ...

How's it possible for a closer that made more All-Star team's in MLB history (9) than any other player at his position, not make it? :think2:

He also held right-handed batters to a .211 batting average,.285 on-base percentage and .311 slugging percentage over a 22-year career!

Anyone ????...

The thread is not a joke. The fact that I put Jmans name in the opening thread was the joke. Me and him have discussed this before.

Ripken hit a few Key milestones which solitify his status as a HOF ...

19 time Allstar ( the fans loved him )
3000 Hits - ( he finished with 3184 , 14th all time )
400 HRs ( finished with 426 ,the then record for a shortshop, 37th alltime)
600 2bs ( 603 , 13th all time )
5000 Total bases ( 5168 , 13th all time )
1000 Extra base hits ( 1078 , 17th all time )
4th in career games , 8th in At Bats ,
Over 1600 runs and Rbis ( 20th and 30th all time )

Add those up , and then put in 2632 consecutive games played , and I thinks more than obvious that Cal Ripken ( although I personally don't care for him much myself either ) is undeniably a Hall of Famer , and he deserves to be there today as much as anybody else before him.

Garvey once had a streak of 1207 games played btw , The National League record and 4th all time , But he failed to reach 3000 hits ( 2599 ) and didnt really even have a consistent spot on the team until his 5th year , his slow start into the Majors cost him , what probably could have been a Hall of Fame career aswell , same for Jimbo ... Longevity defines the Hall of famers , 10 good years doesnt get you in these days ... or has it ever.
