The White Sox were held to a paltry 1-hit on Saturday, but I have a feeling they will have way more than 1-hit this Sunday afternoon against the fading Joba Chamberlain.

The whole "Joba Rules" experiement the Yankees are going with just has this kid all messed up, and the bottom line is in each of his last 4 starts he has allowed 4 runs or better to score.

The line breaks down like this: 19 earned runs, 15 walks allowed, and 27 hits in just 20 innings of work. If Chicago can't get something started off of Joba today, then something is seriously wrong with Ozzie's team!

As for Chicago starter Freddy Garcia, his 2 return assignments to the rotation have seen 8 runs cross in 10 innings of work.

The Yankees plated 10 on Saturday, and have plated a grand total of 43 runs in their last 6 games overall.

We see this Sunday series-ender heading OVER the posted total.

Play the HIGH in the Bronx today!

Tonight I've got a FREE selection on the diamond as I love the Phillies at home in the Sunday night game against the Braves.

Philadelphia is definitely the play in this one on national TV as they have Joe Blanton (8-6, 3.88 ERA) on the mound. This guy hasn't given up more than three runs in a game in 10 straight starts and when that continues tonight, the Phillies get an easy win.

Blanton has already faced the Braves four times this season and just about two weeks ago he held them to two runs (one earned) through seven innings of a 3-2 victory. Philadelphia is 12-5 in Blanton's last 17 starts against N.L. East rivals, 9-3 when he starts as a favorite and 7-0 when he pitches on Sundays.

As a team, the Phillies are on runs of 35-17 overall, 72-33 on Sundays, 29-13 as a favorite, 19-8 as a home favorite and 20-8 at home. Philadelphia has a seven game lead in the division over the Braves and a win tonight goes a long way to putting Atlanta away.

Jair Jurrjens (10-8, 2.91) goes for the Braves. Atlanta is just 1-2 in his last three starts because they just don't bring their bats when he pitches. Tuesday he gave up on run in 7.2 innings but they lost to the Padres 2-1.

Big spot for the Phillies tonight and I'm banking on Blanton holding the Braves to three runs or less. Expect the Philadelphia offense to break out and win this one 6-3.

Oakland Athletics vs. LAA Angels

LAA Angels -1½+100

1 Unit on LA Angels -1.5 +100
After going down to Oakland Saturday, expect the Angels to bounce back in game 4 of this series to earn a split. The Halos have the big edge on the hill with Lackey, who is 15-4 when starting against Oakland with an ERA of 2.66 and a WHIP of 1.131 in his career. Off back-to-back losses and subpar performances, I expect him to bring his A-game this afternoon. The A's have dropped Anderson's last 3 starts, during which he has posted an ERA of 5.21. The Angels are 4-0 in Lackey's last 4 home starts vs. the Athletics, 6-1 in his last 7 starts vs. the Athletics, and 36-15 in his last 51 starts following a team loss in their previous game. He's the guy who we want to have the ball for the Halos today. Angels on the run line.

Texas Rangers vs. Minnesota Twins

Minnesota Twins -130

Minnesota has won six of eight and eight of their last 11 games and will wrap up a home series with the Rangers on Sunday. Scott Baker has been money as of late going 3-0 with a 2.11 ERA in his last three starts, giving up just five runs in 21.3 innings pitched. One of those three wins was a 5-4 victory in Texas over the Rangers beating Kevin Millwood on August 19th. Baker has beaten the Rangers twice this year, also winning July 18th in Arlington giving up one run and six hits in eight innings of work. Texas hits just .235 against him with Michael Young (4-16), Hank Blalock (1-10), David Murphy (1-10), Josh Hamilton (2-9), Jarrod Saltalamacchia (0-5), Chris Davis (0-3) and Brandon Boggs (0-3) all struggling against Baker.

Kevin Millwood is 1-1 with a 5.82 ERA in his last three starts giving up 11 runs and 17 hits in 17 innings pitched. Millwood has yet to beat the Twins in his career, going 0-7 with a 6.18 ERA and a WHIP of 1.803. As mentioned above, Millwood lost to the Twins in Arlington on the 19th, giving up five runs and seven hits in 5.7 innings pitched. Minnesota hits .333 against Millwood with Orlando Cabrera (28-89), Joe Mauer (9-27), Michael Cuddyer (9-21), Nick Punto (9-19), Justin Morneau (6-16), Jason Kubel (4-13), Delmon Young (3-9), Carlos Gomez (3-9), Brendan Harris (4-8) and Denard Span (2-6) all smacking Millwood around. The Twins are 36-29 at home where they average 5.3 runs per game and bat .274 as a team this season

Now on a 49-36 roll with the plays I'm giving away, incl. the 49ers outright over the Cowboys 20-13 Saturday! For today's complimentary play, we're looking at the Texas/Minnesota match up...

Although they've been playing well, there's no question the Rangers are not the same team on the road, and that includes today's starter Kevin Millwood. Note, the Rangers are a ho-hum 31-32 away, while Millwood's ERA rises from a solid 2.83 in Arlington to a very beatable 4.56 ERA on the highway! Going one step further, the Twins just finished tagging Millwood for 5 runs in 5 2/3 innings back on August 19th - and that was at Rangers Ballpark - won't get any easier for Millwood today at the Metrodome.

On the flip side, Twins-backers are confident in Scott Baker's abilities today, as well they should be, since he's gone an outstanding 10-1 since June, incl. 3-0 with 2.11 ERA over his L3 starts! Not only that, but the Twinkies are 4-0 when he takes the mound in his L4 home starts, incl. a win over the Rangers opposite Millwood August 19th.

For as good as Millwood has been this season, the pitching edge swings heavily in Minnesota's favor today. Rangers righty has been a disaster over his L2 starts, including that loss to the Twins. Also of note, the Rangers are 4-9 in their L13 games at the Metrodome, and I expect good things from this Twins offense coming off the 3-0 shutout loss yesterday. They get to do it versus a pitcher who's 0-7 with a 6.18 ERA in 11 career starts against them, and l see more trouble ahead for Millwood this afternoon.

Take Minnesota behind Baker over Texas and Millwood in this MLB match up.

Today's Bonus Play is to take Seattle over Kansas City in MLB.

Just noticed as I was typing this that today's Bonus Play in Baseball was the same matchup that produced a winner for us yesterday in the NFL, as the Seahawks defeated the Chiefs as our NFL Preseason Play of the Year. Lets hope for the same success here!

A look at the starting pitchers here today's shows Greinke with a 3.01 road ERA and a 4-8 record in road team starts while Rowland-Smith has a very similar 3.18 Home ERA and a winning team start home record. So, stats say starting hurlers not as far off as line (KC road chalk) would indicate, and with the rest of the stats (Royals 2-8 L/10 overall, 8-24 L/32 against winning teams, Seattle 5-1 L/6 overall) pointing to the home team, we will go with the Mariners here.

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays @ Detroit Tigers Aug 30, 2009 1:05PM

PICK: Detroit Tigers -145

REASON FOR PICK: The Rays and Tigers meet Sunday afternoon in the third game of a four-games series (Detroit won Friday, Tampa Bay on Saturday). Tampa Bay sends rookie Jeff Niemann to the mound while Detroit counters with Justin Verlander. Niemann is 12-5 with a 3.87 ERA in 24 appearances (23 starts). The Rays are an impressive 16-7 in his starts, giving him a moneyline mark of plus-$995, which ranks fifth among all starters. Verlander, coming off an 11-13 (4.84 ERA) season where the Tigers were 13-20 in his starts (moneyline mark of minus-$1,351 was a ML-worst!), is 14-7 with a 3.38 ERA in 2009. The Tigers are 17-10 in his starts, as Verlander has allowed 163 hits in 181 innings with 211 strikeouts. Both pitchers have fallen off a little recently, as Niemann has allowed four or more ERs in four of his last six starts with Verlander allowing four or more ERs in three of his last five. After going 7-0 with a 1.66 ERA in his first 10 starts at Comerica Park this year, Verlander is 0-2 with a 5.14 ERA in his last two. However, I won't ignore the fact that he's 7-2 with a 2.23 ERA in 12 home starts (team is 9-3) for a Detroit team which is 41-21 at home, outscoring opponents 5.16 RPG-to-3.97. Meanwhile, the Rays are a modest 28-37 on the road. Take the Tigers.

Tips and Trends

Colorado Rockies at San Francisco Giants [4:05 PM ET]

Rockies: The Rockies enter this matchup having lost four games in a row, tying their longest streak of the season. They are 0-6 the past six times they have been a road underdog. Jason Hammel (8-7, 4.43 ERA) will try to end the skid. He has been on a roll during his past two starts. The right-hander pitched seven innings of three-hit, one-run ball at Washington and followed that up by holding the Dodgers to two runs in seven innings this past Tuesday. Hammel did throw a career-high 118 pitches in that start, though. Hammel has been far more effective on the road than at home. Away from Coors Field he is 6-4 with a 2.88 ERA this season, compared to 2-3 with a 6.47 ERA at home. Hammel faced the Giants at San Francisco in May. He held them scoreless in six innings getting a no-decision in a 1-0 loss.

The Rockies are 16-6-1 to the under in their last 23 games following a loss.

Key Injuries - Outfielder Dexter Fowler (knee) and pitcher Aaron Cook (shoulder) are on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Giants (-$1.40, O/U 7.5 under $1.15): San Francisco is very tough at home. The Giants are 42-17 in their last 59 games as a home favorite at AT&T Park. They have won 42 of their last 62 home games when facing a right-handed starter. Matt Cain (12-4, 2.39 ERA) has a 2.72 ERA in his last six starts, walking just nine during this span while giving up only 36 hits in 46 1/3 innings. However, the right-hander doesn’t have a win to show for his efforts during this stretch. Cain is 6-2 with a 2.28 ERA at AT&T Park this season. He’s 5-2 with a 2.04 ERA when pitching during the day. He’s also 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA in three starts versus Colorado this season. Cain usually goes deep into his games, too. He has pitched at least seven innings in all eight of his starts since the All-Star Game.

The Under is 15-5 the last 20 times the Giants have been favored.

Key Injuries - Infielder Freddy Sanchez (shoulder) is on the DL.
Catcher Bengie Molina (quadriceps) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (Side of the Day)

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox (-165, 8)

The Red Sox are not what the Doctor ordered.

Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay has not been himself in recent games and another date with the BoSox won’t help matters. Halladay is coming off back-to-back losses with one of those defeats credited to Boston.

The Red Sox got to Halladay for four runs on five hits in a 6-1 victory August 19. The crafty right-hander managed to strikeout seven batters but allowed two dingers in his worst showing against the AL East rival since the beginning of last season.

In his last starts, Halladay was hit hard by the Tampa Bay Rays. He allowed seven earned runs in six innings of work. Those two starts pretty much nixed any shot Halladay had of winning the AL Cy Young.

"I was trying to make quality pitches and I just didn't do it," Halladay told the press of his most recent starts. "I just did a bad job of pitching ahead, aggressively."

Heading into Saturday’s game, Boston has won four in a row against Toronto.

Pick: Boston -165

Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees (-230, 10.5)

Total bettors are looking at the ChiSox for a little help this weekend. Anyone betting the over has cursed Chicago’s feeble offense, which has accounted for just two runs in the first two games of their series with the New York Yankees.

The Bronx Bombers even hung 10 runs on the board Saturday, leaving the White Sox to score just one run to push with 11-run total. However, Chicago registered just one hit and struck out six times in a 10-0 shutout loss. The White Sox didn’t let the score keepers take the night off – they did commit three errors Saturday.

"When you've got more errors than hits, you better look yourself in the mirror and start second-guessing yourself,” manager Ozzie Guillen told reporters. “But I'm second-guessing myself right now, making the wrong lineup every day. I second-guess myself bringing in the wrong guys to pitch, second-guess myself [in that] we work so hard to put this team together, all the way from Spring Training, and when I look on the field ... It gets to the point where [if] you are a veteran player -- and I have a lot of respect for them -- you appreciate what they [have done] for you in the past, but this is not Major League Baseball, sorry."

The Yankees pitching a defense has done a good job nullifying opponents’ bat, staying below the total in their past three games. For Chicago, this was the ninth time in the last 11 games the final score has been under the number.

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds

Maybe it’s that Rock Star attitude or all the “legal” substances coursing through his veins. Whatever it is, Reds starter Bronson Arroyo is red hot.

Since the All-Star break, the right-hander is one of the best arms in the National League. He’s posting a 2.54 ERA with a WHIP of 1.15 during that span. But, due to poor run protection and bad bullpen, Arroyo has only two wins since the break.

In his most recent start, Arroyo went seven innings and allowed just one earned run on six hits for a no-decision.

Ross Ohlendorf, Pittsburgh Pirates

Ohlendorf apparently missed the memo on the Pirates packing it in for 2009. The righty is pitching like a postseason ace in his recent starts. He’s allowed more than two runs in just three of his past 10 starts and owns a 2.74 ERA since the All-Star break.

"He's fun to watch - the way he has developed, the way he has taken to everything," manager John Russell told reporters. "He has really grown as a pitcher, and it's been enjoyable to watch him grow. He just keeps taking it every outing and continuing to make great strides forward."

In his last three appearances, the Bucs are 3-0 with Ohlendorf pitching more than 19 innings in those wins. He went just over six innings against the heavy-hitting Philadelphia Phillies in his last starts, giving up just two earned runs (both home runs) for a no-decision.

Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals

If the Cardinals are going to make noise this postseason, Adam Wainwright will be playing the crash symbols. The righty is 7-2 in his last 10 starts and owns a 1.27 ERA since the break.

In his last three starts, Wainwright has bookended a two-run, no-decision with shutout efforts. His most recent appearance was a eight-inning clean sheet against the Houston Astros in which he allowed only three hits and struck out five batters.

Slumping

Jeff Suppan, Milwaukee Brewers

Ah, what a difference a year makes. Around this time last season, C.C. Sabathia was pushing the Brew Crew into the Wild Card spot. Fast forward to 2009 and Jeff Suppan is toeing the rubber in Milwaukee – going winless since the middle of June.

Suppan has watched his ERA balloon to 9.00 in his four starts since the All-Star break. He spent a month on the injured list, making his return this past Tuesday. He went just over four innings and watched his pitch count pile up with five walks to his one strikeout. Suppan gave up nine hits which turned into four runs for a no-decision.
