"I'm trying to think of some new things," Baker said. ... Just tweaking a little bit, maybe we can do some things. Hanigan's getting hits, he's got a little more speed. He can get some hits up there, you can hit and run. Gonzo doesn't have the hits Hanigan has, but Hanigan doesn't have the RBIs Gonzo has."

Dusty Baker, some pre-game comments:
"I'm praying for a win so I can get some sleep. Losses don't let you sleep."

Baker said Reds CEO Bob Castellini has been down to visit him in the clubhouse several times this year, offering encouragement and also searching for answers. GM Walt Jocketty meets with Baker even more frequently, as everyone in management keeps working and searching for answers.

How has Castellini's demeanor been?
"Not bad ... how great do you expect it to be?" Baker said.
Baker added: "I've had more meetings this year than I think I've had in a long time," meaning both team and personal meetings. "Sometimes you've just got to ride it out. ... Some guys have been forced into action that were slated to be extra guys."

Tigers-Indians Preview
By KATE HEDLIN,
STATS Writer
(AP) -- The Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians have had to rely extensively on their respective bullpens this weekend thanks to a pair of extra-inning games.
Given the way Armando Galarraga and Carl Pavano have pitched recently, each team's relief corps better be at the ready Sunday as well.
Cleveland and Detroit close a three-game series Sunday, with the AL Central-leading Tigers trying to win their fourth straight set against the Indians.
After Cleveland (43-61) won in 13 innings Friday, Detroit (54-48) prevailed for a 4-3 victory in 12 innings Saturday. Jhonny Peralta hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth to tie the game, but Detroit went ahead in the 12th on Ryan Raburn's RBI single and added an insurance run when Jose Veras balked home Clete Thomas.
Cleveland scored one run in the 12th, but Zach Miner got Grady Sizemore to pop out to end the game for his first career save.
"Other than the hits and run, it was a lot of fun," Miner said, jokingly adding he's hoping to become the career saves leader someday. "(Trevor) Hoffman better watch out."
It was Detroit's eighth win in 11 games against Cleveland this season and fourth in five contests at Progressive Field. The Tigers, who remained 1 1/2 games ahead of Chicago for first place in the Central, were 2 for 15 with runners in scoring position while committing two errors. They have 13 errors in the last six games.
"Kind of a weird game, a wild game," manager Jim Leyland told the Tigers' official Web site, "but it ended up right."
Cleveland, meanwhile, has lost three of four since a season-high five-game winning streak.
"We tied it in the ninth and created some chances later to win it," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "I can't say enough about the effort."
Wedge's bullpen has pitched 14 innings in this series while Detroit has needed 12 innings from its relievers. Rookie Rick Porcello went eight innings for the Tigers on Saturday, but Fernando Rodney blew the save to force extras.
With both team's bullpens having been extended this weekend, they'll each look to an inconsistent starter to rest some weary arms.
Galarraga (5-9, 4.84 ERA) takes the mound for Detroit, looking for his first win in five starts.
The Tigers lost all four of the right-hander's starts in July, although he was responsible for only two of the defeats, including one against Texas on Monday after he allowed four runs and six hits in seven innings of a 5-2 setback.
Although Galarraga was winless last month, in starts against Kansas City and Seattle, he allowed only two runs and six hits over 14 1-3 innings.
Galarraga has lost both starts against the Indians this season, allowing nine runs in 11 innings. He is 3-2 with a 4.57 ERA in seven career outings against the Indians.
Cleveland will hand the ball to Pavano (8-8, 5.66).
The Indians have won three of Pavano's last four starts, but he's just 2-4 with a 7.29 ERA since June 10. The right-hander struggled again Monday against the Angels, but escaped with a no-decision, allowing six runs and 10 hits - including four home runs for a second straight game - over six innings of an 8-6 win.
The right-hander has won both starts against the Tigers this season, allowing four runs over 15 1-3 innings.

Scouting Report:
Brewers: The Brewers are giving Villanueva at least one more chance to grab hold of a spot in the rotation after the right-hander surrendered five runs in four innings of his first start in more than a year. That was Tuesday against the Nationals, when the Brewers tabbed Villanueva over recent Triple-A call-up Tim Dillard because Villanueva has a four-pitch arsenal. He pitched well through three innings before the Nationals struck for four runs in the fourth including an Adam Dunn homer that bounced onto the sidewalk outside Miller Park. Villanueva threw 67 pitches, and should be able to reach the 80-pitch plateau in his second start.Padres: Correia earned his first win since July 12 with a solid six-inning outing against the Reds on Tuesday. Correia pitched six innings and gave up six hits and only two runs in the Padres 3-2 win. After coming off his shortest outing of the season, Correia returned to form to get his second win over the Reds this season. Correia hopes to continue his success against the Brewers who he has not faced this season.

Scouting Report:
Phillies: Hamels is 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA (nine earned runs in 33 innings) in his past five starts. The Phillies have won each of those games. Hamels has thrown at least seven innings in his previous two starts, the first time this season he has done that. "That's something I've really worked on, trying to go deep into the game," Hamels said. "Then you feel like you've really pitched and have actually helped the team. That's what I was able to do [Tuesday in Arizona]. I was able to throw strikes and battle all the way to the end." Giants: Barry Zito finished one out shy of notching his third straight quality start Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The veteran lefty allowed one earned run over 5 2/3 innings before giving way to the Giants 'pen. While his 4.54 ERA could come down a bit, Zito has also managed to get by while receiving zero runs of support in seven of his 21 starts this season. Zito didn't face the Phillies last season but holds a 2-1 record and 3.50 ERA against Philadelphia all-time.

Scouting Report:
Blue Jays: Romero wasn't real sharp in his last outing against the Mariners, but he managed to give a solid six innings in an 11-4 win. The lefty gave up four runs and 10 hits, but said he was happy with the way he attacked the strike zone and pitched to contact. Romero has been a reliable arm for the Jays all season, and his 11 quality starts are the second-most in the Majors for a rookie. He's never faced the Mariners.Athletics: Mazzaro, a 22-year-old rookie, won the first two starts of his career but is winless in nine subsequent assignments, and it took a game-tying, three-run rally in the ninth inning Tuesday to prevent him from becoming the first A's starter to lose seven consecutive starts since Brian Kingman lost nine in a row in 1980. Mazzaro, who dominates when he keeps his fastball below the knees or above the belt, again struggled with location his last time out and gave up five runs in the third inning against the host Red Sox. In all, he was was charged with six runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings. Mazzaro has never faced the Blue Jays.

Hamels got the win Tuesday by holding the Diamondbacks to just one run over eight innings.

Hamels allowed only four hits, struck out nine and walked none. It was just his seventh win of the season, and his ERA sits at 4.42, but with a 105:21 K:BB ratio, it's safe to say he's pitched far better than those stats suggest. Expect the ERA to continue to plummet.

Zito didn't factor into the decision Tuesday when he allowed just one run over 5.2 innings in the Giants' 3-2 win over the Pirates.

: Zito gave up nine hits, walked two and struck out six. His defense did him no favors, but Zito was able to work out of most jams in the win. He'll get the Phillies at home next time out.

Villanueva will get at least one more start for the Brewers, as manager Ken Macha announced he would start Sunday against the Padres, the team's official site reports.

Macha is running short on rotation options with Dave Bush on the DL and Jeff Suppan perhaps following. Villanueva allowed five runs in four innings against the Nationals Tuesday and had not looked sharp in the bullpen beforehand.

Correia held the Reds to two runs in six innings and picked up his seventh win on Tuesday. He allowed six hits and two walks and struck out five.

Correia had back-to-back starts in difficult ballparks, one in Philadelphia in which he did not pitch well, and one in Cincinnati in which he picked up a quality start. He has been much better at home, but that should not come as a surprise.

Romero is 3-0 with a 3.93 ERA in his last five road starts since allowing one run in 6 1-3 innings in a 1-0 loss at Texas on June 11. Toronto has also won seven of Romero's last nine starts overall.
In Monday's 11-4 win at Seattle, the left-hander gave up four runs and 10 hits - all singles - in six innings.
Romero was sharp in his only start against the A's on April 19, giving up four hits with six strikeouts in seven innings of a 1-0 win.

After throwing 13 2-3 scoreless innings in winning his first two major league starts, very little has gone right for Mazzaro. He is 0-7 with a 6.65 ERA in his last nine outings and has yielded 20 runs - 16 earned - and 27 hits over 13 1-3 innings in his last three.

On Tuesday at Boston, Mazzaro was tagged for six runs and nine hits in six innings of a 9-8, 11-inning win.

Dempster (toe) allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and no walks in five innings Tuesday. He struck out three.
The toe wasn't an issue, and Dempster's command was fine as he threw 60 of 86 pitches for strikes. He should be fine going forward.

Nolasco pitched seven solid innings against the Braves on Tuesday, allowing two runs in seven innings.
Nolasco's comeback trail is back on track. After two shaky outings, he has two straight good ones. Poor run support resulted in a no-decision.

Feldman will start Sunday's game on three days' rest, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Texas elected to start Feldman on short rest over Dustin Nippert as Feldman lasted just 2.2 innings in his prior start.

The Mariners recalled Snell from Triple-A Tacoma on Friday, the Associated Press reports. He will start Sunday at Texas.
Spin: Acquired on Wednesday, Snell will give the Mariners an immediate look at whether a change of scenery will help him recapture some of his past potential. He's been pitching so well in the minors that he could end up being a nice waiver wire steal

It was the second time in three starts that he's allowed six runs. The 23-year-old right-hander was burdened by a lack of run support in June. But while going 4-1 with a 2.09 ERA in his six July starts, he proved why he's quickly establishing himself as one of the game's top young pitchers. Mariners: Snell makes his Mariners debut after being acquired from the Pirates in a seven-player trade on Wednesday. He went 2-8 with a 5.36 ERA in 15 starts for the Pirates and was 2-2 with a 0.96 ERA in six starts for Triple-A Indianapolis in the International League. He struck out 17 batters over seven innings in his first Triple-A start on June 28 against Toledo. Snell becomes the 10th pitcher to start a game for the Mariners this season. This will be his second career start against the Rangers. He pitched a complete game victory on June 13, 2007.Rangers: Feldman allowed six earned runs on 10 hits over 2 1/3 innings on Wednesday against the Tigers. He faced 18 batters, which tied the fewest his faced this season in a start. (The other came when he was pulled after a lengthy delay on June 13.) It was the shortest outing in 43 career starts for Feldman and the most runs allowed this season. He had thrown at least five innings in 17 starts entering tonight and snapped a streak of six consecutive quality starts. Feldman needed 38 pitches to escape the first inning and 18 more to record just one out in the third. In his career against the Athletics, he is 3-2 with a 3.73 ERA in 41 innings pitched. He has posted a 5.19 ERA in 60 games -- 21 starts -- away from home.

Kinsler still sitting with hammy issue: Rangers 2B Ian Kinsler missed his fourth straight game on Saturday against the Mariners due to a strained left hamstring and is day to day.
(Updated 08/02/2009).
Injury Report
Hamstring - Questionable for Aug. 2 vs. Seattle
(Updated - 8/2/09)

Kinsler was initially hoping to return on Friday but was unable to return even by Saturday. Hopefully he'll be back Sunday and avoid being an injury risk for Fantasy Week 18 (Aug. 3-9). See if he returns on Sunday before making a decision on him for the upcoming scoring period.
