As Meatloaf used to sing, "Two out of three ain't bad." So with that ditty stuck in our heads, we select Adam Wainwright and his .667 winning percentage to get lucky win No. 13 against Houston. The Astros are optimistic that Roy Oswalt will indeed be able to take his scheduled turn in the rotation, and since we don't get to see the medical reports, we'll have to take their word for it. … CC Sabathia is 7-1 with a 2.84 ERA for his career at U.S. Cellular Park, so he comes in just ahead of Mark Buehrle, who still should be started by all his owners, without question -- just don't expect perfection again. … Jered Weaver has been the anti-Buehrle of late, but he's far better than the 7.47 ERA over his past three starts, and considering he didn't actually get charged with a loss in any of those games, he certainly can't complain of lack of run support. … Jason Marquis is 4-2 at Great American Ballpark, so don't be sad. (Dagnabit, there's that Meatloaf again!) We like Marquis, but we like Jair Jurrjens and his 2-0 record with a 1.37 ERA over his past three starts a little bit better, especially against Chad Billingsley, who is 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA the past three times he's squared off against the Braves. … Ricky Nolasco is 1-0 with a 2.79 ERA over his past three starts, and goes up against Ryan Dempster, who still is contending with that broken toe and probably could have used a little more time on the disabled list. … Cole Hamels re-enters the Top 10. He's been pitching well of late and is a perfect 3-0 against the Giants for his career. … James Shields does have a favorable matchup against the Royals, but that 7.27 ERA over his past three does give us reason to be cautious with our praise here. … Wisdom would say to rank Carl Pavano higher, since he's 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA against the Tigers so far in 2009. But there's this song in my head that's making me think he's due for a loss. … Ricky Romero has nine wins? Talk about drilling for oil on a city street. He is 2-1 in his past three, but with a 7.20 ERA. … Other middle-of-the-road options are Brian Bannister, with a 10.38 ERA versus the Rays in 2009; Barry Zito, who does have a 1.89 ERA in his past three but faces the strong Phillies lineup; and Kevin Correia, who has a 6.46 ERA over his past three appearances. Not exactly a murderers' row, but all capable of having a good day. … Glen Perkins carries huge risk, but his 2-0 record with a 0.56 ERA against the Angels might yield huge rewards for those owners brave enough to take that chance. … As for the rest of the Cracker Jack box, there's nary a Coupe de Ville to be found. Carlos Villanueva's ERA is 7.88 over his past three outings. Vin Mazzaro's is 10.80! … Ian Snell has been called up from Triple-A to join fellow Pirates-castoff Jack Wilson on the Mariners roster. He'll be taking Jarrod Washburn's turn in the rotation, and we'll try not to snicker when Seattle management tries to explain how they haven't given up on making the playoffs this season. … And finally, we've got Clay Buchholz at No. 30. Its not that we have anything against him personally, but with all that trade deadline hullabaloo and his name being mentioned as being included in each and every potential deal, we just don't have any confidence that his head and heart will be completely present in this start. Sure, he could go out with a chip on his shoulder and strike out 20 Orioles and if he does, we're happy for him. But we're still not starting him.

• Ryan Doumit, C, Pirates: He's hitting .524 against the current Washington Nationals staff. He's still playing for Pittsburgh, isn't he? When is that deadline again?
• Hunter Pence, OF, Astros: Pence has a .950 OPS against Adam Wainwright and rocking a seven-game hitting streak.
• Matt Holliday, OF, Cardinals: Look, how can you ignore a .520 average since the trade? You simply can't.

• Placido Polanco, 2B, Tigers: Polanco struggles against Carl Pavano. A .212 batting average in 33 career at-bats isn't going to cut it for fantasy purposes.
• Carlos Quentin, OF, White Sox: What to do with CQ and his .158 batting average since returning to action? With a .143 lifetime average against CC Sabathia, starting him is probably not the right answer.
• Randy Winn, OF, Giants: He has managed to record a mere .214 batting average against Cole Hamels and has hit only .174 over the past week.
• Dan Uggla, 2B, Marlins: He's 0-for-6 with four strikeouts against Ryan Dempster, and hitting only .211 against the Cubs staff as a whole.

• Ben Francisco, OF, Phillies: Francisco hit .329 in July for the Tribe and may be called into action in Philadelphia if Shane Victorino needs a little more time off with his knee injury.

• Freddy Sanchez, 2B, Giants (knee): Sanchez could make his debut for San Francisco this weekend, assuming that his "tender knee" has sturdied itself up a bit.
• Yunel Escobar, SS, Braves (wrist): X-rays were negative after Escobar was hit by a pitch Thursday.
• Martin Prado, 2B, Braves (ankle): Prado got hit with a stray line drive during batting practice and could miss a few days with a deep bruise.
• J.D. Drew, OF, Red Sox (leg): Drew left Thursday's game with an unspecified leg injury and may miss a few days as a result.

Armando Galarraga struck out five and allowed four earned runs on six hits and a walk over seven innings in a losing effort against Texas on Monday.
Galarraga has struggled to get back to the steady, sometimes spectacular starter he was in 2008, but he has been a lot better in his four July starts than his 0-2 record indicates. Galarraga has a 3.29 ERA over those four starts, and has seemingly straightened out the command issues that bedeviled him in June. His next start is on August 2, in Cleveland.


Pavano gave up four homers on Monday night against the Angels, allowing six runs on 10 hits altogether.
This is two consecutive games where Pavano has allowed four homers. After a stretch in April and May where Pavano strung together a handful of solid starts, he's regressed back to replacement level.

Marquis (blisters) threw six innings and allowed three runs - two earned - in taking the loss against the Mets on Tuesday.
Marquis may have been pulled early because of the blister issue, having thrown 86 pitches. No word on whether he used his sinker, so we will continue to see if his next start is in question. He did manage to throw his fourth consecutive quality start.


Arroyo held the Padres to three runs despite allowing nine hits and two walks in 6.1 innings on Tuesday, but he took the loss to fall to 10-10 on the season.
Arroyo gave us a break from his trademark of being really, really good or really, really bad. Instead he pitched out of jams and did damage control as seven of the nine hits went for extra bases.

Buchholz was able to get past some early shakiness Tuesday night, the Boston Globe reports.

Buchholz had trouble last season when hits started to pile up, as they did Tuesday night, but he was able to bounce back and didn't shy away from his fastball. "He gave up some early contact on his fastball, and then to his credit didn't shy away from it," manager Terry Francona said. "As soon as we put the runs on the board, he went back out and attacked. Had a real good fourth, put a zero up, and was aggressive. But there were deep counts. But again, after the early contact - I think he gave up eight hits early - I thought he actually did OK."

Jon Garland allowed three earned runs and three unearned runs on five hits and two walks over five innings in a loss to Philadelphia on Monday.
Garland had been critical of his teammates after a previous loss, but he committed one of the two costly errors in a disastrous fourth inning on Monday. Garland's 4.45 ERA and 5-10 record don't look great, but he'd actually been fairly effective in five July starts prior to this outing, putting up a 2.72 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP in 33 innings. Garland has been the subject of trade speculation as well over recent days



Mike Pelfrey blanked the Rockies in 6 1/3 innings of seven-hit, five-strikeout ball Tuesday to pocket his eighth win.
Pelfrey was lucky to escape without allowing a run, considering he put eight baserunners on (3 BB) and needed 115 pitches to work six-plus frames. Two double plays gave the Mets righty a helping hand as he defeated Jason Marquis an lowered his ERA to 4.72. His next start comes against an inconsistent Diamondbacks lineup, again at home, where he sports a solid 3.90 ERA compared to a 5.75 mark elsewhere.

James Shields was tagged for five earned runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings against the Yankees on Monday en route to his seventh loss.
This marked the second time in three starts that Shields has given up at least five earned runs. The Rays righty finished a forgettable month of July having gone 0-2 with a 5.21 ERA in six outings. Still, the 27-year-old hurler has been solid on the mound more times than not this year, as seen by his 3.87 ERA and 99/33 K/BB ratio.

Balester went six innings on Tuesday night against the Brewers to get his first win of the year, holding them to two runs on five hits. He struck out three without walking a batter.
Balester's one big mistake came on a Ryan Braun homer, but even then it came with the bases empty. His spot in the rotation isn't necessarily secure, but this probably bought him at least one more start. Don't write Balester off as a prospect just yet.

Paul Maholm allowed four earned runs on eight hits and a walk over six innings in a losing effort against San Francisco on Monday.
This was hardly Maholm's finest work, but he and his teammates only barely had a chance against a superhumanly sharp Tim Lincecum in this one. It's hard to know what to expect from Maholm over his last 10 starts, as he's mixed in both some truly terrible stinkers and a few lights-out efforts. It's tough to figure out which Maholm is going to show up -- he was torched by the punchless Mets three starts ago, but shut down these very same Giants on July 17.

Sabathia dropped to 10-7 while coughing up six runs - five earned - on nine hits and two walks in 5.2 innings against the Rays on Tuesday.

Sabathia finished July with a 4.62 ERA and 1.46 WHIP for the month. As bad as the Rays looked on Monday night against the A.J. Burnett, they were a different team against Sabathia on Tuesday night. Don't be too alarmed by this start - the Rays have a strong offense and have done well against lefties this year, Mark Buehrle's perfect game notwithstanding.


Coming off a perfect game, Buehrle allowed five runs on five hits and a walk to the Twins Tuesday to take the loss.

Buehrle started this one where he left off, retiring the first 17 Twins who came to the plate (5.2 innings). He set a major league record by retiring 45 batters in a row, dating back to his July 18 start against Baltimore. The wheels came off shortly after he allowed his first base runner, and he exited after 6.1 innings (97 pitches).

Villanueva will get at least one more start for the Brewers, as manager Ken Macha announced he would start Sunday against the Padres, the team's official site reports.

Macha is running short on rotation options with Dave Bush on the DL and Jeff Suppan perhaps following. Villanueva allowed five runs in four innings against the Nationals Tuesday and had not looked sharp in the bullpen beforehand.


Correia held the Reds to two runs in six innings and picked up his seventh win on Tuesday. He allowed six hits and two walks and struck out five.

Correia had back-to-back starts in difficult ballparks, one in Philadelphia in which he did not pitch well, and one in Cincinnati in which he picked up a quality start. He has been much better at home, but that should not come as a surprise.

Weaver pitched five innings but received no decision in the Angels' victory over the Indians on Tuesday.

Weaver allowed four earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out three in the game. Weaver has to be happy that July is nearly over: he posted a 6.88 ERA in six starts during the last month.


Glen Perkins picked up his sixth win on Monday by holding the White Sox to three earned runs on six hits and a walk over seven innings.
Perkins was absolutely shellacked in his last start, allowing eight earned in just one inning of work, and complained of shoulder soreness after the game. So, for reasons of both performance and health, it was nice to see him get back on track against a tough opponent. This outing is about as good as Perkins gets, and he'll look to repeat this sort of solid showing when he faces the Angels in Minnesota on August 2.

Scouting Report:
Tigers: Galarraga gets to turn the calendar after a winless July, but the record doesn't indicate how well Galarraga has pitched for the past month. Detroit's mercurial right-hander allowed a 3.29 ERA in four July starts, scattering 21 hits over 27 1/3 innings with eight walks and 18 strikeouts. Three of those last four starts lasted at least seven innings, and the lone exception was a six-inning performance. He gave up four runs over seven innings Monday at Texas, but three of them came in a sixth inning that included a double-error RBI hit and a two-run, two-out double from Hank Blalock.Indians: Pavano has given up 13 runs total against the Blue Jays and Angels in his last two starts. In Anaheim on Monday, he allowed six runs on 10 hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Four of the hits were home runs -- all solo shots. Three of those blasts came in order in the second inning, off the bats of Juan Rivera, Kendry Morales and Mike Napoli. And this came after Pavano gave up four home runs in a loss to the Jays on July 22. Clearly, then, keeping the ball in the yard is an issue for the right-hander. Pavano is 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA in two starts against the Tigers this season.

Diamondbacks: Garland has put together six consecutive quality starts (six or more innings, three or fewer runs) and has pitched better than his numbers would indicate. When Garland has been bad, he has been really bad, which has ballooned his ERA. Four times he has allowed six or more earned runs in a start. Garland has been critical of the defense behind him in his past two starts. Last time out, he allowed six runs but only three were earned. He got a no-decision in his start before that despite allowing just three runs over seven innings. Mets: With a nastier fastball and the natural sink that led to double plays in two tight situations, Pelfrey pitched quite effectively against the Rockies in the Mets' 4-0 victory at Citi Field Tuesday. He allowed seven hits and three walks, hit a batter and struck out five in 6 1/3 innings. The victory was his first in three starts and his fourth in 15. Now he opposes the Diamondbacks, against whom he has produced a 4.42 ERA and 0-2 record in three career starts (18 1/3 innings). Pelfrey has a 4-2 record and 3.90 ERA in 11 starts at Citi Field this season. The D-Backs roster is not particularly familiar with him (52 composite at-bats).

Rockies: After having his start pushed back because of a blister on his right middle finger, Marquis said he felt fine even after taking the loss in a 4-0 defeat against the Mets on Tuesday. Marquis went six innings and allowed three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits, saying he could use his regular grip on his sinker for the first time in a few starts. Marquis owns a 6-3 mark with a 4.81 ERA in 14 career games (13 starts) against the Reds. He is 4-2 with a 4.42 ERA at Great American Ballpark. Edwin Encarnacion is 8-for-16 with two home runs in his career against Marquis.Reds: Arroyo exited Monday's game against the Padres with the fate of his hands. Yet he earned the loss when reliever Nick Masset allowed an inherited runner to score from third. Arroyo now has lost his last two starts after he had won his previous two outings. Arroyo gave up just three runs over 6 1/3 innings but was knocked around for nine hits. He will look to snap his losing streak against the Rockies who he is 1-2 against in his career with a 4.39 ERA.

Red Sox: Buchholz tossed 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball on Tuesday, striking out a season-high five in an eventual 9-8 loss to Oakland at Fenway Park. The 24-year-old right-hander said his breaking ball felt better than it has in the past three weeks, and he seems to be handling adversity much better than last season, when he lost nine of 11 decisions in 15 starts. Scouting Report:
Nationals: Balester had one of his best outings of his career on Tuesday, lasting six innings and giving up two runs on five hits against the Brewers. In the second inning, he gave up an RBI single to J.J. Hardy that tied the score at 1-1. In the sixth inning, Ryan Braun hit a solo homer, but the Nationals already had a comfortable lead.Pirates: A couple of wacky defensive sequences hurt Maholm in his last start despite the fact that he didn't pitch that poorly. He was up in the strike zone a little too much early, which did cost him a few early runs. He did find a way to settle into his rhythm late, though, and threw four scoreless innings to end the six-inning start. He also closed out his start by getting plenty of groundballs, a sign that he's on top of his command. Maholm is 0-2 with a 5.23 ERA in five career starts against Washington.

Scouting Report:
Royals: Bannister put together another good outing but, for the fourth straight start, he didn't get a victory. He went six innings and gave up three runs to the Orioles but left trailing, 3-2, in a game the Royals finally won in 11 innings. Bannister threw 100 pitches, 58 for strikes and as he transforms from a fly-ball pitcher, he got 12 of 18 outs on ground balls with two strikeouts. In his last 10 starts, his ERA is just 2.89 but the Royals won just three of the 10 games. That span began just after he was spanked for eight runs at Tampa Bay in a 9-0 loss. Since then, he had a no-decision against the Rays in Kansas City.Rays: Shields has never had good numbers against the Yankees, and Monday's start was no different. Though he hung in after falling into a 3-0 hole in the second inning, Shields didn't have the command or sharpness characteristic of most of his starts this season. He lasted 5 1/3 innings and gave up nine hits and five runs to take the loss -- his second poor outing in three performances since in the All-Star break. It was just the fourth time this season he did not pitch into the seventh inning. He remains Tampa Bay's most consistent starter, but with 146 innings logged already this season, there may be cause for concern of fatigue brewing.

Scouting Report:
Yankees: Sabathia looks to bounce back after taking a loss in his last start at Tampa Bay on July 28, allowing six runs (five earned) over 5 2/3 innings in a 6-2 defeat. Sabathia said after that start that he feels his command has been off since a July 7 effort at Minnesota -- in four starts since then, he is 2-2 with a 4.44 ERA and opponents are hitting .317 against him. He will look to turn it around against the White Sox, who he'll face for the first time as a Yankee. He's 14-4 with a 3.65 ERA in 26 career starts vs. the Pale Hose.White Sox: It will be hard for any starting pitcher, let alone Buehrle, to top what he accomplished over his last two starts. The southpaw set a Major League record by retiring 45 straight hitters, dating back to the last out he recorded in a start against Baltimore on July 18. Buehrle set down the first 17 Minnesota hitters he faced on Tuesday, following up his perfect game last Thursday at home against the Rays. Buehrle ended up getting the loss, giving up five runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking one. Sunday could be quite the hot ticket in Chicago, with Buehrle and CC Sabathia scheduled to take the mound. Buehrle has a 1-5 record with a 6.11 ERA lifetime against the Yankees, one of only four individual team losing records for the southpaw.

Angels: Weaver's second-half inconsistency is becoming a concern. Fighting his command, he needed 102 pitches to make it through five innings against the Indians on Tuesday night, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and three walks. He has allowed 35 earned runs across his past 45 1/3 innings, covering eight starts, since shutting out the Padres with 119 pitches on June 14. Weaver is 3-2 with a 5.19 ERA in nine road tests and is 2-1 in his career in five starts against the Twins with a 3.12 ERA. At the Metrodome he is 0-1 in two starts with a 3.38 ERA.Twins: Despite some left shoulder tendinitis, Perkins was given the green light to make his last start against the White Sox and the left-hander showed tremendous improvement from his previous outing when he lasted just one inning vs. Oakland. Against Chicago, Perkins allowed three runs on six hits over seven innings. The slider was Perkins' key pitch in the start, with the pitcher saying that he lived and died by the pitch. Next up, he'll face the Angels, a team he's 2-0 against with a 0.56 ERA in two career starts.

Astros: Norris, who was called up following Tuesday's game, will make his first Major League start in place of injured ace Roy Oswalt, who left Tuesday's game with a lower back strain, flew to Houston for further tests on Wednesday and received a pain-killing injection. Norris allowed one run in three innings in his debut Wednesday against the Cubs. Ranked by Baseball America as the No. 2 prospect in the system, Norris, 24, was 4-9 with a 2.63 ERA in 19 starts at Round Rock this year, allowing 104 hits, 53 walks and striking out 112 batters in 120 innings. He was a sixth-round pick in 2006 out of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.Cardinals: Wainwright tamed the powerful Dodgers offense to the tune of eight scoreless innings on Tuesday night but didn't do it with his normal dominating stuff. Wainwright gave up eight hits and got into several jams but buckled down when he needed to and escaped damage. He also got several strong defensive plays, including two by shortstop Brendan Ryan and one by third baseman Mark DeRosa. The workhorse needed 111 pitches to get through eight innings, the 10th time this season that he passed the 110-pitch mark. He finished three outs short of his first career shutout. He last faced Houston on April 11 and tossed five shutout innings.
