Was about 10 years old or so, saw the Pete Rose/Bud Harrelson fight in the 73 playoffs between the Reds and Mets.

Happened to be sitting in right field, where Pete Rose was playing. People were just throwing all kinds of garbage at him after the fight. The public address system says the game is going to be forfeited unless people stop throwing garbage at Pete Rose.

Nobody stops.

Manager Yogi Berra comes out to right field and begs the fans to stop.

Nobody stops.

Tom Seaver comes out to right field and begs the fans to stop.

Still throwing crap.

Cleon Jones and Rusty Staub come out--no stopping the crazy ass fans.

Finally, old Willie Mays comes hobbling out and begs the fans to stop.

Immediately the fans stop, and the game resumes.

Mets won that game and the playoffs (huge underdogs) but lose to the A's in 7 games.

I was a little boy watching this game I remember on a Friday night. It was one of those classics you will never ever forget. Hard to fathom we go back to Milwaukee on Sunday (think it was Mothers day) and just flat out beat them from start to finish. We also won it in 76 two yeas later. In 75 we were the favorite but the Washington Bullets let by Weatherspoon had the series of his life and then some. I can still hear the Washington PA announcer yelling SPOON after every basket he made. This one hurt.

 Spooooooooooooon...oh yea, that PA guy was awesome, and The BIG E Elvin Haaaaayyyyes...The Bullets had some great battles, mainly with George Gervin and the Spurs...those were the days. I used to listen mainly on the radio as we did not get all the games....Imagine now listening to NBA playoffs on the radio- thats just crazy, but that's how it was.

I was at the pairs figuring skating at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics when they awarded the Russians the gold medal, when clearly the Candian pair had skated much better.

Turned out to be the biggest scandal at that Olympics. The next day, the French judge Marie-Reine Le Gougne admitted she had been pressured into awarding the long program to the Russians in exchange for a first-place vote for the French ice dancing team of Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat, and a judging controversy quickly blew up. Then they later gave another gold medal to the Candian pair.

I had free tickets to go so why not. Pretty cool to be a part of a big scandal.

Sorry, it was actually left field, not right field, that Pete Rose was playing.

Yeah he had the chant on all the Bullet players and remember the Hayes chant very well too. Spoooooooooooon was right. We heard it all series. We only had radio too at times. Havlicek had 54 points in game 1 against Atlanta and listened to that in the kitchen with a little crappy radio. Also Dave Cowens had 20 points in the 4th quarter of one playoff game and Johnny Most was going nuts. Remember that too. Hard to believe it was only on the radio but they were.

Back then we only got the game of the week on CBS....remember the one on one competition at HT of the game of the week? Can you imagine that today? I think Paul Westphal may have won it all actually.

No way players would be able to risk injury in a competition like that today.

Kareem looked like he was 8 foot 6 in some of the photos, the angles make him look a good foot taller than everyone else, I've noticed this in a lot of old Jabbar photos.

That's because Kareem was 1 of the first big men (over 7') that could run and jump without to many problems. Most couldn't before him although Wilt was an agile player to an extent.

Kareem was athletic and could jump pretty high and didn't always come down on other players ankles. Most centers were clumsy.

Look at how high he was in that picture! He could jump and had long arms. He was a great defensive player because with him NOBODY came in the lane so he didn't get as many blocks as he should of had. But most teams didn't even try to drive the lane when he was in the game.

Wilt and Kareem are 50 year players. That is that every 50 years you will get a player this good! Both would eat Duncan alive if they played the Spurs. Both would foul out Shaq and out score him and out rebound him. These guys were basketball players.

Shaq is just big! He sucks at basketball. Ever see him shoot a jump shot?

I Remember the one on one competition and also remember they did the same thing with horse games. They played horse and I was upset when JoJo White lost in the first round. Yes, no way could they do that today. And if they did they would want big money. I did not remember that Westie won it.

I don't know if they had more than one season of "one on one", but I know that Bob Lanier (while with Detroit) won the first one. Also, I went to Game 5 of the 1973 Eastern Conference Finals between the Celtics and the Knicks at Boston Garden (Havlicek had his arm in a sling and Paul Silas won the game for the C's with 2 FTs 91-90. Knicks won the series and the title.) Anyway, after the game they filmed one of these "One on One" segments that was going to be aired on the weekend. I believe it was between Bob Love of the Bulls and Geoff Petrie of the Blazers and I think it was the semi-finals. It was then that I realized how much editing they do for the broadcast. The "one on one" game took forever and neither guy could make a shot.

good stuff....do you recall why Howard freaked, was the spread involved?
The call surprised the shit out of anyone and this tactic was virgin in those days..It took trhe ABC trio 5-10 seconds to register the masterminded call by Shula..The Fins lead by 6 late in the game..On third and long from their own 20, Griese scrambled around than intentionlly ran towards his own endzone and took a safety..In stead of punting from deep in their territory..Miami`s Sieple free punted ( No Rush ) from their 20..Fins held and won

That is an amazing story! Playing one on one after the playoff game.

Westphal may have won the horse competition, the more I think about it...he was very good with his opposite hand....
great story.:aktion033

Any idea if Howard had Miami -4 1/2 ?

So Shulas was the first to ever take the safety...not surprised....

I remember Chuck Noll leaving is defense on the field late in Super Bowl X and that was a very risky move because the ball was inside Pitt territory , Dallas had a legit shot at a Hail Mary, Noll didn't want to risk his shaky punting game and punter Bobby Walden getting blocked and returned.
In the highlights you see several Steelers players scratching their heads not understanding the call... it was risky.

Another painful series. Celts were better but injured vs the dreaded Knicks. Havlicek played some but was not the same. I think it went 7 and on a Sundayafternoon the knicks blew us out at home. Great memories.
