Game 6 1974 NBA Finals Milwaukee Bucks vs Boston Celtics

Natrually again at the old Boston Garden I watched one of the most clutch game winning skyhooks Kareem ever launched. After tying a great playoff game in regulation and at the end of the first overtime, John Havlicek hit a rainbow over Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to give Boston a 101-100 lead with seven seconds left in the second OT. Then Oscar Robertson (at the end of his great career) inbounded the ball to Kareem. Kareem dribbled down the right side and hit a great skyhook from deep in the corner to give Milwaukee a 102-101 double OT win and send the series to a seventh game in Milwaukee, which typical of the Celtics was won by them easily by double figures.

Celtic center Dave Cowens did his best to defend on the shot but had no chance to get to it. The wild Garden crowd groaned in unison when the ball swished thru the net and the buzzer blew.

It would certainly be out of the ordinary by today's standards, but over 35 years ago the NBA use to occasionally have doubleheaders. I went to a few of these at the Boston Garden. They would have 2 out of town teams play the first game, followed by the home town team playing another oppenent. I think the last one I can remember was in the early 70's.

Wil, That looks like Hank Finkel defending kareem/lew.

Will wasn't there some sort of confrontation you got into behind the bench...I thought you may have mentioned this before, can't recall all the facts...did I dream this? You were heckling some player or something? :nono5:

I forgot about that, I was sitting in the first row right behind the Atlanta Hawks bench during a regular season game in the mid 70's at the Garden. Between the visitors players bench there was maybe 10 feet of space for people to pass one way or another, in that space was the bottom half of the hockey boards that were permanetly installed but were only about 3 feet high (the top half was attached later for hockey).

Anyway, the Hawks had a big Iowa farm boy on their roster by the name of Steve Hawes, he was over 7 feet tall and for some reason (too many pregame cocktails I suspect) I was verbally harrassing Steve who was basically a bench warmer and innocent of anything to begin with. To be honest I was a typical obnoxious Celtic fan in those days.

Finally Steve had enough and turned around and with one giant step was over the hockey boards and almost on me. Like an idiot I am saying come on bring it on but of all people the at the time Hawks head coach Hubie Brown grabbed Hawes by the back of his jersey and pulled him back to the Hawks bench before anything happened saving me from having to get into what most likely would have been a very brief altercation (Hawes was huge). Hubie saved me from a probable punch from the giant Hawes and a definite night in jail for inciting the altercation. True story.

Steve Hawes, that looks like the great "Big E" Elvin Hayes guarding him.

Cut across shorty, I think you are right, in fact now that I think about it Cowens was number 18 so it can't be him. I remember the double headers and went to a few back in the late 50s.

Great shot of Dave Cowens and Kareem taken during the game mentioned above.

The player wearing #1 in the Bucks jersey is the fabulous "Big O" Oscar Robertson, his arm is draped over all time great hall of fame Celtic swingman John Havelcheck. That's fine Celtic guard Jo Jo White opposite of Oscar looking up at the action. I had a great seat for the game at mid court about ten rows up courtesy of a good friend named Tommy K. who was a high school basketball coach and by some kind of miracle came thru with the premo seats for the two of us. I remember Red Auerbach was two rows behind me..

I was at the Timberwolves game in Minnesota where Rodman kicked the photographer in the nuts. Play was stopped for 15 minutes, and no one knew what the hell was going on..

Kareem looked like he was 8 foot 6 in some of the photos, the angles make him look a good foot taller than everyone else, I've noticed this in a lot of old Jabbar photos.

In addition, #19 on the right hand side is current Warrior coach Don Nelson.

Whor, I was the the Rosanne game, too.

But my best was Leon Lett vs. Dolphins. Also, was the coldest I have ever been in my life. (Yes, I was born and raised in San Diego.)

Shorty, nice call, that is definitely Nellie who was the most unatheletic looking good basketball player I ever saw. He made a huge and freaky looking jump shot that beat the Lakers in game 7 a few years earlier in the 1969 NBA finals..

He shot a little jumper from the foul line that went straight up in the air about 6 or 7 feet after hitting the front of the rim and came straight back down thru the basket for the series winning shot in the old LA Coliseum. The final was 108-106 and the great Bill Russell was player coach of The Celtics.

Nellie during his playing days with the Celts. His #19 is one of the 22 numbers retired and hanging from the rafters of the new TD Banknorth Boston Garden.

About 15 years ago i went on a trip from NY to Foxboro to watch a patriots game. The game was played in a monsoon and i don't even remember who the pats played, who won or any other detail about the game. All i remember is never being that wet in my life before or since that day.

Mony, wasn't it the 1st game of a day/night doubleheader? I can almost remember having moved up to the front row behind home plate because it was so empty there. By the way, how are you doing player?

Saw Freddie Solomon of the Doplhins return a punt, kick off and catch for a touchdown..He also threw one as he was a QB at Tampa College..He played WR for Miami and was later traded to 49ers along with Vern Roberson for a kid named Delvin Williams who had one of the greatest seaons ever at Fins RB..

Also saw Leroy Harris run for the longest run by a Dolphins RB on a Monday Night against the Bert Jones lead Colts circa 1978..

Saw Dick Anderson on a MOnday night against the Steelers pick off 4 Bradshaw passes..Return 2 for tds and got tackled at the 2 yd line on third..Thats the Mon Night game where Griese took the intentional safety and Cosell freaked out

I was at Stanley Cup Final game one between the New York Rangers and The Boston Bruins in the old Boston Garden in 1972 when Garnet "Ace" Bailey scored the game winning goal with a rink long rush up the left boards and around the back of the net to tuck the puck into the far side against veteran Ranger goalie Ed Giacomin with about a minute to go after The Rangers had tied the game late in the third at 5-5 coming back from down 4 goals (5-1).

Sadly Garnett Bailey and Mark Bavis, two scouts employed by the Los Angeles Kings (and thousands of others), were killed the morning of September 11th. 2001 when their jet United Airlines Flt 175 was intentionally crashed into The World Trade Center Tower #2.

Ace was the 4th line center for The Bruins and an ulikely hero he had long blond hair at the time when players did not play with helmets, although he didn't play much Ace was a big fan favorite for his flashy style.

"Ace" Bailey during his heday at Boston garden, this might be the actual moment just before he tucked the puck in the net to beat the Rangers that day.

The goal remains one of the most famous in Bruins history, led by the great Bobby Orr they won the cup in six games that year (their last Stanley Cup win since).

These were the good old days for the Bruins. We have come close since but not often. Bobby Orr is regarded as the best player ever by many people especially around here.

I was a little boy watching this game I remember on a Friday night. It was one of those classics you will never ever forget. Hard to fathom we go back to Milwaukee on Sunday (think it was Mothers day) and just flat out beat them from start to finish. We also won it in 76 two yeas later. In 75 we were the favorite but the Washington Bullets let by Weatherspoon had the series of his life and then some. I can still hear the Washington PA announcer yelling SPOON after every basket he made. This one hurt.
