Analysis:
First off, the Braves will be without both Chipper & Yunel Escobar for tonights game. Escobar, left after five innings with a strained abdominal muscle. The shortstop said he thinks he can play Friday, but manager Bobby Cox expects him to miss three or four games. Escobar is hitting .343 (12-for-35) with three doubles, a home run and five RBIs. Atlanta looks to get back on track when it hands the ball to Jair Jurrjens (2-0, 2.45 ERA). Jurrjens hasn't made it through the sixth inning in his first two starts, but he's been effective enough. He allowed four runs and five hits in 5 1-3 innings of an 8-5 win over Washington on Sunday. The right-hander was 1-1 with a 4.35 ERA in two starts against the Pirates last season. Pittsburgh has opened all three series it's played with a win. Pittsburgh also won 5 of the 7 games these teams played last season. The Pirates look to continue that trend Friday behind Pat Maholm (1-0, 1.32), who is looking to build off two effective starts. He pitched seven innings against Cincinnati on Saturday, allowing one run and three hits in a 10-2 victory. The left-hander is 0-1 with a 2.77 ERA in two starts against the Braves. This is his first time facing them since 2007. I really think we are getting great value with Maholm here at home.

Florida is off to a amazing start at (8-1) & they take on the Washington Nationals, who got their 1st win yesterday. Marlins manager had this to say about his team: "We're playing well," Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez said after Thursday's 6-2 win over Atlanta. "The bullpen is pitching well. We're getting good starting pitching and timely hitting." Florida will got with Ricky Nolasco tonight, as he takes the mound for the first time since Saturday's 8-4 loss to the Mets. He allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings. I wasn't feeling too great," Nolasco told the teams' official Web site. "It was a battle the whole day, just trying to get through that day, considering how I felt and what I had. To go into the fifth inning only down one run, it was good." Nolasco, though, has enjoyed plenty of success against the Nationals in his career, going 6-1 with a 4.10 ERA. On April 6, he earned the opening-day win over Washington as he struck out six in six innings in a 12-6 victory. The way the Marlins have been hitting, Nolasco could receive plenty of run support as Florida looks to improve to 8-1 at Nationals Park. Nobody in here is surprised (of the good start)," outfielder, Cody Ross said after his three-hit effort on Thursday. "We feel like we're a good team. There are a lot of skeptics who say it's early. We have to have confidence and never let down." Washington will go with left-hander John Lannan tonight. Lannan makes his first start since a six-inning outing against Atlanta on Saturday when he allowed four runs and nine hits in a 5-3 loss. In the opening-day loss to Florida, the lefty lasted only three innings, giving up six runs and six hits, including homers to Cantu & Hermida. I like the hot Florida team here to get to Lannon good today & I look for a improved effort out of Nolasco tonight.

Analysis: Detroit hands the ball to Justin Verlander, & he makes his third start of the season as the Tigers (5-4) open their nine game trip and three-game set against the surprising Mariners. Verlander (0-1, 9.35 ERA) last pitched Saturday in a 4-3 win over Texas as he allowed two hits and one run in five innings. This was a far improvement from the Tigers season opener against Toronto on April 6, when he surrendered eight runs and eight hits in 3 2-3 innings. "If I throw the ball like that all season, I'll be very successful," Verlander said following Saturday's game. Verlander does have some past success at Safeco field, but I have seen & watched Verlander this season, & he still doesn't have the kind of command of his pitches like he used to...Verlander, 11-17 with a 4.84 ERA last season, & he looks very simialar to last year in his 1st couple of starts. "My goal is, within the next four or five starts, is to get Verlander through seven innings on a consistent basis for the rest of the year," Detroit manager Jim Leyland told the team's official Web site. For Seattle tnight, they give the ball to Felix Hernandez (1-0, 4.15) as he makes his first start at Safeco Field in 2009. In his last appearance, the right-hander allowed five runs and seven hits in an 8-5 win over Oakland. "I think his ankle was bothering him a little bit," Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said. "I don't think it was a huge issue but it was enough to throw his mechanics off." King Felix is 3-2 with a 2.97 ERA lifetime against Detroit but has won his last three starts versus the Tigers, including a seven-inning effort on May 31 when he surrendered two hits in a 5-0 victory. Verlander gave up four runs in seven innings in that game - his only career loss to the Mariners. I really see a edge in the sta?rting pitching matchup here with King Felix pitching at home & I look for Seattle to get to Verlander & knock him out before he get to the 7th inning. Seattle has lights out closer Morrow rested tonight as well.
