59 White Sox. Ray Moore RHP 3-6 - Al Smith Outfielder hit 17 homers - Ron Jackson (not really fair) cup of coffee at 1st base.

Not sure what day of the week it was. Just remember that, being a knuckleballer, he often started on 2 days rest, which is why he had 44 decisions one season. The White Sox were full of gimmicks in the 70's. Starting both games of a doubleheader was one of many. Who can forget Disco Demolition Night with Steve Dahl that resulted in the White Sox having to forfeit game 2 of a doubleheader vs the Tigers. Also, White Sox players wore shorts a few times one season -- not exactly a fashion statement for bulky 1st baseman Lamar Johnson. The exploding scorebard...the shower in the center field bleachers in old Comiskey Park...Harry Caray announcing from the bleachers occasionally...Falstaff Beer...lots of memories...

almost all of Richie Dick Allen's homers came in the first inning of night games and during day games. His vision was terrible.

A couple good guesses for Dick Allen but not what I'm referring to. I think he did hit one into the 445 foot bleachers though. As for roof shots, not sure if Allen did this, but Fisk, Kittle, and Luzinski made a habit of it later on, so it's not that rare an accomplishment.

Back to the Allen feat, as a further clue, he did this twice in one game. Any more guesses?

Ah, ok. I was born in 1965, so it was a little before my time

. I do know some of the names from the '59 team as I come from a family of White Sox fans who probably remember that season well.

Back to Lamar Johnson, the guy absolutely wore out Baltimore...He seemed to get a hit every other time up for years! He was like Bonds is against everyone ! He killed the Orioles...

The Sox uniforms collectively may be the worst in sports history... How about the sox uni, that had SOX written across the chest (blue and red) these were circa 1983...

Some of my favorite Sox, Allen, Walt 'no neck' Williams,Bill Melton, Julio Cruz, Rudy Law, and Baines.... come to think of it, I don`t like many Sox players.

I remember, Allen hit two inside the park homers in the same game in the early 70's.

Correct! Very nice!

Think it was a game vs the Twins in which Twins centerfielder (Bobby?) Darwin twice tried to make shoestring catches and failed.

Holy Cow! Old Comisey was a big park, but I wouldn`t have expected that from Allen...

Paul Blair did that vs Minnesota once...

Hy Picasso, do you remember Britt Burns and his habit of his hat falling off when he pitched LMAO...the guys hat would sometimes fall off after every throw, it was hysterical...they had some good pitchers in the early 80`s Hoyt, Dotson, Burns and Bannister....I thought Dotson was going to be a great one but he didn`t last long

Yes, I remember Britt Burns well. He was ok, but never lived up to all the hype. In the division winning 1983 season (the first Chicago division since the Sox in '59; Cubs won their division in '84), the White Sox had a starting rotation of Hoyt (24-10), Dotson (22-7), Bannister (16-10), Burns, and Koosman.

They started the season 16-24 and it looked like another typical baseball season in Chicago. But something changed, best coined by Texas' manager Rader, originator of the phrase "Winning Ugly". They finished the season at 99-63. Played Baltimore in the playoffs and won game 1 in Baltimore. Lost games 2 and 3. Britt Burns started and pitched a great game 4. Unfortunately for Sox fans, Chicago couldn't score either. Tito Landrum wound up hitting a 3-run homer in the top of the 9th or 10th as the Orioles won 3-0 to end the series.

This was such a memorable season for Chicagoans because the city had literally won nothing since the Bears in '63. It preceded the Bears Super Bowl in '85-'86 and was well before the Bulls' run in the 90's. Unfortunately, it ended in disappointment for diehards like myself.

And to add to my post, if the Sox could have won game 4, they had Hoyt ready to start game 5...

The O`s dropped game 1 it was a very very bizarre weather afternoon...we saw sunshine , some snow showers and heavy rain ,then ending in sunshine...The Orioles dropped game one, Mike Boddicker threw a gem in game two, in Chicago for game 3 Eddie Murray hit a 3 run homer in the 1st inning after being knocked down, their was a near brawl!!!

The Tito Landrum Homer was a big sigh of relief, we didn`t want any part of having to face off against Lamar Hoyt in game 5...

I remember it well...

The Sox were tough that year, and as you said they came out of nowhere...the O`s always beat up on the Sox back then...

Hoyt was unreal that year...Its a shame he went off the deep end with off the field trouble...

Hoyt has made a comeback in real life, he is now clean and sober.

Lamarr Hoyt pitched eight years in the major leagues, 1979-84 for the White Sox and 1985-86 with the Padres.

FAMOUS FOR: Earning the American League Cy Young Award in 1983 with a 24-10 record and being named MVP of the 1985 Major League All-Star Game.

CURRENTLY: He just turned 48, lives in the Irmo, South Carolina area with wife Leslie and their three children and sells golf equipment at Dick's Sporting Goods.
