It wasn't going to be 1st and 5. Holding is a 5 yard penalty and automatic 1st down.

I know what it was... Read above I was commenting to another poster on a situation where it would have been either 1st and 5 or 1st and 10. The situation you described was either 1st and 10 or 2nd and 3. 2nd and 3 is a no brainer and you called it the worst decision ever which is insane as not only was it not a bad decision, it was the right decision.

Exactly holding is auto 1st down where as offsides is just 5 yards... Payton chose 1st and 5 instead of 1st and 10 which is a no brainer... Michaels didn't get it and said it didn't matter what he chose.

SP is a brilliant coach.

:nohead:

Not only do we get that preposterous assertion from chops, but he also goes on to claim that he, choppy, knows how Sean Payton thinks.

Let that sink in, folks.

Terrible job last night on taking 2 and 3 instead of 1st and 10 after a penalty.

You guys are totally losing me here... how is 1st and 10 better then 2nd and 3? Gaining 7 yards on 1st down is a good play. Your odds of picking up a 1st down from 2nd and 3 are a lot higher then percentages of picking up 1st and 10. How are people actually arguing this?

If your team gains 7 yards on 1st down... would you take that or ask for a do over? You are claiming you would be disappointed in the 7 yard gain.

This from an advanced stats article a few years back...

We can see that the break even point for 2nd down is 5.5 yards. In other words, a team (whose purpose is to get a 1st town) should prefer a 2nd down and 5 to a 1st and 10, but it should prefer a 1st and 10 to 2nd and 6.

Not sure where those percentages came from. Ive only seen it once this year and it didnt work out for new orl last night.

Payton was actually arguing after the 2nd down about it.....think he knows he screwed that up.

No he wasn't arguing that. He was arguing about the 3rd down play where he thought Graham was held. Use some common sense here.

Watch Sean Payton talk about the Kentucky DerbyNew Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton talks about the Saints owners Tom and Gayle Benson and their two Kentucky Derby horses

The New Orleans Saints coach is attending his first Kentucky Derby this Saturday in support of Saints owners Tom and Gayle Bensons, who have two colts in the race.
The horses, Mo Tom and Tom's Ready, will be doing the heavy lifting. Payton is just along for the ride.
"It's out of my league," Payton said last week at the Zurich Classic. "I'm excited to be there and be a part of it for them. I don't know a whole lot. You hand me the Racing Guide, and other than the number of horses, that's about all I can read."
Payton has been in Louisville since Wednesday along with the Bensons and attended the Derby post position draw. Come Saturday, he'll be sporting some custom shoes to go along with his seersucker suit.
"My buddies never thought one day I would buy a seersucker (suit)," Payton said, "I only saw it in the movies."

Local artist Tuna Seither painted some new shoes for Payton in the white, gold and blue colors of GMB Racing. The GMB silks are painted on the top of each shoe to represent the two horses, while Mo Tom and Tom's Ready are written on the back.
"It's a great story," Payton said. "People spend their whole lives buying horses and looking at horses. Two of their first group are in this race. To some degree the city is behind it. It's one of their horses. It'll be exciting."
