White House going nuclear on Netanyahu

By Michael Goodwin, NY POST
How dare Israel be more concerned with the existential threat of Iranian nukes than with Obama’s feelings? And what do members of Congress think they are, a separate branch of government or something?

Thou shall not cross Dear Leader.

With their gutter sniping failing to stop Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned March speech before Congress, White House aides are unloading their full arsenal of bile.

“He spat in our face publicly, and that’s no way to behave,” one Obama aide told an Israeli newspaper. “Netanyahu ought to remember that President Obama has a year and a half left to his presidency, and that there will be a price.”
It is pointless to say petty threats do not become the Oval Office. Trying to instruct this White House on manners recalls what Mark Twain said about trying to teach a pig to sing: It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

Still, the fury is telling. It reminds, as if we could forget, that everything is always about Obama.

How dare Israel be more concerned with the existential threat of Iranian nukes than with Obama’s feelings? And what do members of Congress think they are, a separate branch of government or something?

Yes, the presidency deserves respect, even when the president doesn’t. Although Obama routinely ignores lawmakers and their role in our constitutional system of checks and balances, there is an argument afoot that Congress should have taken the high road and consulted him before inviting Netanyahu.

The argument has a point — but not a compelling one. To give Obama veto power over the visit would be to put protocol and his pride before the most important issue in the world.

That is Iran’s march to nuclear weapons, and Obama’s foolish complicity. His claim at the State of the Union that “we’ve halted the progress of its nuclear program and reduced its stockpile of nuclear material” would be laughable if it weren’t so dangerous. The claim earned him three Pinocchios, with four being an outright whopper, by The Washington Post.

Outside the president’s yes-men circle, nobody believes the mad mullahs will voluntarily give up their quest for the bomb. International sanctions made life difficult for the regime, especially with oil prices cratering, but Obama relaxed restrictions with nothing to show for it except negotiations where he keeps bidding against himself.

He is desperate for a deal, and the Iranians know it, so they want to keep talking. They are gaining concessions and buying time, which means a reversal of their weapons program becomes much harder to achieve.

The ticking doomsday clock is what led to the remarkable comments by Democrat Robert Menendez. After Obama warned that more sanctions, even if they would not take effect unless the talks collapsed, could scare off the Iranians, the New Jersey senator said Obama was repeating talking points that “come straight out of Tehran.”

That’s a zinger for the ages — and has the added advantage of being true.

Any deal that leaves Iran with a capacity to make a nuke in weeks or months will ignite a regional arms race. As I have noted, American military and intelligence officials believe a nuclear-armed Iran will lead to a nuclear exchange with Israel or Arab countries within five years.

Israel has the most to lose from an Iranian nuke, and *Netanyahu can be expected to articulate a forceful argument against Obama’s disastrous course. That’s why House Speaker John Boehner invited him, and it’s why the president is so bent out of shape and refuses to meet with Netanyahu. He doesn’t want Americans to hear the other side.

But we must. And Congress must not shirk from its duty to demand a meaningful agreement with Iran, or none at all.
An extra layer of sanctions waiting in the wings is good backup, but another pending bill is more important. It would demand that any agreement come before the Senate for a vote.

Naturally, Obama opposes it, but that’s all the more reason why it is needed. As Ronald Reagan famously said about Soviet promises, “Trust but verify.”

So must it be with Iran and, sadly, our own president.

Wow, what a piece of Shit!

Obama administration intervened in Argentine probe of Iranian leader, Jewish center bombing
WorldTribune
LONDON — The United States pressed Argentina to end its investigation of Iranian complicity in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in which nearly 100 people were killed.

Western diplomatic sources said the administration of President Barack Obama urged Argentina on several occasions to either stop or limit the investigation into the bombing of the Argentine-Israeli Mutual Association in Buenos Aires. The sources said the U.S. appeals marked one of the demands by Iran for a reconciliation with Washington.

“Argentina had hard evidence against at least one Iranian leader, which prevented him from traveling abroad,” a source said.

A key Iranian suspect was identified as Ali Akhbar Velayati, foreign minister from 1981 until 1987, and deemed close to supreme leader Ali Khamenei. Velayati has been on the official wanted list of Interpol since 2007 and a subject of an international arrest warrant by Argentina.

“One of the first demands by Iran to the administration was that Argentina be pressed to drop the warrant,” the source, close to the Argentine leadership, said. “Within months, the U.S. followed up with a high-level meeting in which Argentina was asked to lay off.”

The sources said Buenos Aires eventually complied. In 2013, Argentina and Iran signed an agreement for a joint investigation of the AMIA bombing, deemed a cover-up by Buenos Aires.

On Jan. 18, a leading Argentinian prosecutor assigned to investigate an alleged government cover-up on AMIA was found shot to death in his home. The prosecutor, Alberto Nisman, had been scheduled to appear in front of Congress and present evidence that President Cristina Kirchner and Foreign Minister Hector Timerman shielded Teheran in connection with the bombing.

“[They] took the criminal decision of inventing Iran’s innocence to satisfy commercial, political and geopolitical interests of the Argentine republic,” a 289-page report by Nisman said.

It was not clear whether the report contained evidence of U.S. intervention in the alleged plot to clear the Iranians. The 51-year-old Nisman, appointed in 2005, had presented evidence that Iran sponsored the bombing, conducted by its main proxy, Hizbullah.

On Jan. 21, the ranking Democrat of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said Obama has become the leading defender of Iran. Sen. Robert Menendez suggested that the administration was coordinating with Teheran in efforts to block U.S. sanctions on Iran.

“The more I hear from the administration and its quotes, the more it sounds like talking points that come straight out of Iran,” Menendez said. “And it feeds to the Iranian narrative of victimization, when they’re the ones with original sin.”

For her part, Ms. Kirchner said Nisman was killed by opponents of the president. Earlier, officials asserted that Nisman committed suicide.

“I’m convinced that it was not suicide,” Ms. Kirchner said. “They used him when he was alive but then they needed him dead.

On Friday, White House spokesperson said that President Barack Obama would not meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he visits Washington, D.C. in March due to a policy of not meeting with foreign leaders prior to their election campaigns, “to avoid the appearance of influencing a democratic election in a foreign country.” However, that excuse proves empty against the historical record, as Bill Clinton met then-Prime Minister Shimon Peres in 1996.

The Times of Israel notes that Clinton’s meeting with Peres was aimed at shoring up support for the dovish leader, who had taken over when Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin was assassinated in late 1995. Support for Peres had waned considerably in the months since, especially over the controversial Operation Grapes of Wrath, which had targeted Hezbollah in Lebanon. The “intended victim” of Clinton’s gesture, the Times notes, was also Netanyahu–who later edged Peres in a close result.

In addition to that glaring example of White House intervention in an Israeli election, there is also an example as recently as several days ago, when President Obama hosted British Prime Minister David Cameron, who is in facing a tough re-election fight. Cameron, though a Conservative, touts his friendship with Obama, and has hired several former Obama advisers to assist him. In addition, in 2008, Obama sought to meet with foreign leaders to assist his presidential effort.

Nice try but no cigar!

Bibi Netanyahu -- aka 'The Republican Senator From Israel' -- May Have Made A Fatal Political Mistake

Comment Now
Set aside, for the moment, the diplomatic row being sparked by Speaker of the House John Boehner as he seeks to create two conflicting foreign policies for the United States—one pursued by the President and the other pursued by the Congress.
Boehner’s hubris, in conjunction with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s desire to interfere with American policy while seeking to bolster his re-election campaign, may turn out to be the very political screw-up that will allow the joint ticket forged by the Labor-Hatnuah political parties to bring an end to Netanyahu’s long reign atop the Israeli government.
According to a Channel 10 poll out this past Thursday in Israel, the joint ticket offered by the Labor-Hatnuah coalition currently stands to grab 24 seats in the Israeli Knesset in the coming election—up one seat from the previous poll—while Netanyahu’s Likud Party is holding steady with just 20 seats.
The poll also projects that the party leaders atop the Labor-Hatnuah ticket, Issac Herzog and Tzipi Livni, have an increasingly good chance of forming the next Israeli government by assembling a coalition of between 61 and 68 seats in support of their government.
It turns out that there are no shortage of Israeli voters who don’t care for the idea of their Prime Minister jumping into the middle of America’s internal disagreements over foreign policy and further understand that, at the end of the day, Israel remains deeply dependent upon the United States for critical assistance in the never-ending battle to preserve and protect their nation.
According to Hatnuah leader, Tzipi Livni, Netanyahu is sabotaging israel’s critical relationship with Washington.
“A responsible prime minister who first thinks of the good of his country’s citizens does not do such a thing,” Livni said, adding, “A responsible prime minister would know to work with the president of the United States — with any president — and protect our most important interests.”

If the polls are to be believed, there are quite a few Israelis who share Livni’s take on the subject.
So, how did all this happen?
It turns out, the plan to have the Israeli Prime Minister speak to Congress, without first discussing with the White House, was the brainchild of Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Ron Dermer who has, for weeks now, been endorsing the re-election of Bibi Netanyahu on American television programs despite explicit Israeli Civil Service regulations prohibiting him from doing so.
An example of Dermer’s breaking his nation’s rules to play politics?
As reported by Israli newspaper Haaretz, Dermer broke those rules while being interviewed by Jorge Ramos on American cable network, Fusion.
During the discussion, Dermer said, “I have no doubt that when they [the Israeli public] look at all the people that stand for the leadership of the country, that they will have confidence in the leadership of prime minister Netanyahu.”
Dermer’s words came despite an admonition issued by Israel Civil Service Commissioner Moshe Dyan noting that, “A state employee must be careful that his actions or behavior cannot be interpreted as being aimed at promoting the interest of any particular party or candidate.” Anyone violating these instructions, Dyan said, “will face criminal or disciplinary proceedings in accordance with the law.”
In addition to Dermer’s apparent violation of Israeli law, he also revealed his penchant for duplicitous behavior by meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry just one day before Speaker Boehner announced his invitation to Prime Minister Netanyahu, yet never once mentioned to Kerry what was about to happen.
Making it all the more offensive, the White House has explicitly gone out of its way, since the announcement of the Israeli elections, to avoid saying or doing anything that could be interpreted as support for the Herzog/Livni ticket.

At least the American President had the good sense not to further endanger his relationship with Netanyahu and the Israeli people.
In reviewing Netanyahu’s political ploy, and his ambassador’s duplicitous behavior, it seems fair to ask whether this is really how friends treat friends?
While you may entirely agree with Boehner’s decision to invite Netanyahu to address the Congress, can you possibly not be disturbed that the Israeli ambassador to our country went out of his way to not tell our Secretary of State of his plan to interfere with our foreign policy and seek to embarrass our president in the process?
Israeli voters know these details and, by many accounts, are not all that happy with the way Netanyahu is inserting himself into the politics of the United States. What’s more, Israelis understand that, should Netanyahu win re-election, they are now looking at two years—if not more should a Democrat take the White House in 2016—of a very cold relationship with the White House at a time when this is likely not in the best interest of Israel.
Of course, just as Netanyahu has already pushed the date of his speech—originally scheduled for February 11—to a date in March just two weeks before the election, my prediction is that Netanyahu will realize his mistake (or take note of the polls) and seek to push the speech well past election day.
By then, it may be too late as this latest insult to the American President may prove to be one step too far for the man many Israelis have dubbed “the Republican Senator from the great State of Israel.”
As for Boehner’s behavior, I’ll have more on this later.
For the moment, suffice it to say that using the Israeli Prime Minister in an attempt to embarrass the President of the United States is beyond shameful.
I get that the Speaker doesn’t like the President or his policies. I get that many readers of this piece will have snarky responses about how this President already embarrasses himself and our nation, etc., etc., etc.
But what neither the Speaker, nor those who cannot manage to think beyond their distaste for this president, understand is the truly unprecedented step Boehner has taken by joining with the leader of a foreign nation against his own president.
Presidents come and go. However, respect for the office of the presidency, particularly on the part of the man who is second in the line of succession to the presidency, should not.
Through his actions, Boehner may have scored some points for his party and for his preferred policy option vis-à-vis the Iranian nuclear negotiations. But in the process, the Speaker of the American House of Representatives has succeeded in embarrassing the Office of the President.
Considering that Speaker Boehner has failed to accomplish anything of note during his Speakership, I can only wonder how it must feel to have his legacy be his effort to disgrace the American President in the effort to bolster the political chances of a foreign leader.
I can’t imagine it would feel very good, unless Boehner has now becomes so consumed by party politics that he no longer can be bothered to consider what is best for his country in the long run.
While I have often disagreed with Speaker Boehner, I have always kind of liked him in the belief that, while our solutions might be at odds, he wanted to do what he believes is best for America.
It would be a struggle for me to harbor such positive feelings going forward.
Seeking to damage any American President by helping a foreign leader embarrass our own leader can never be considered something that is best for the nation. And that is simply the truth no matter what your political persuasion or your feelings about the current occupant of the Oval Office.

Tzipi Livni says Israeli prime minister leading country into 'diplomatic isolation'

Israel’s prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has been accused by senior opposition figure Tzipi Livni of leading the country into “crisis and diplomatic isolation”, amid growing criticism of his handling of relations with the US.
The comments by the former justice minister and lead negotiator in the peace process with the Palestinians came after it was revealed that Barack Obama would not meet with Netanyahu during the Israeli prime minister’s visit to address Congress in March.
The planned trip, which was orchestrated by congressional Republicans in clear breach of protocol by a visiting foreign head of state, has provoked fury inside the US administration, not least because the White House was not notified before its announcement.

Obama to keep Netanyahu at arm's length during controversial US trip

A US official quoted anonymously in the Israeli paper Haaretz went even further, accusing Netanyahu of “spitting in the face” of the Obama administration.
Netanyahu’s invitation to Congress by the Republican House speaker, John Boehner – two weeks before Israel goes to the polls – has attracted fierce criticism from US officials off the record, a cool reception from the State Department in public and sceptical commentary from Israeli columnists who have accused Netanyahu of engineering the speech to further his struggling election prospects.

“We thought we’ve seen everything,” the senior American official was quoted in Haaretz as saying. “But Bibi managed to surprise even us. There are things you simply don’t do. He spat in our face publicly and that’s no way to behave. Netanyahu ought to remember that President Obama has a year and a half left to his presidency, and that there will be a price.”
Another unnamed official quoted in the Washington Post – and described as close to the US secretary of state, John Kerry – suggested that “price” might be a diminishing appetite for supporting Israel.
“The bilateral relationship [between Israel and the US] is unshakable,” the official said. “But playing politics with that relationship could blunt Secretary Kerry’s enthusiasm for being Israel’s primary defender.”
That should be worrying for Israel, which, in the face of growing frustration in Europe over its policies in the occupied territories, has become ever more reliant on the US and its veto on the UN security council.
The White House’s announcement that it would not meet with Netanyahu – although couched in the diplomatic explanation that the president did not meet foreign leaders before elections in their countries – was widely interpreted by the Israeli media as a major snub. Both Yedioth Ahronoth and Ma’ariv led with the headline: “Obama’s Revenge”.
The incident marks a new low in the relationship between Netanyahu and the Obama administration, in part over the perception that the Netanyahu visit has been designed by Republicans and Netanyahu to apply pressure to the White House over the issue of Iranian nuclear negotiations.
Lobbied by the Israeli prime minister and Israeli ambassador to the US, Ron Dermer, the Republican-led Congress has been pushing for fresh sanctions against Iran, which Obama has repeatedly said he will veto – most recently in his state of the union address on Tuesday.
Relations between Netanyahu and Obama have been marked by rancour, with tensions growing when the Israeli prime minister appeared to back the Republican candidate, Mitt Romney, against Obama when the president was standing for re-election.
Netanyahu also provoked the ire of the president when he seemed to lecture Obama publicly in 2011 in the Oval office.
Israel’s ambassador Dermer has also come in for criticism. Dermer – who has already attracted criticism for his advocacy for Netanyahu’s re-election against Israeli civil service rules – is reported to have requested the invitation to speak to Congress.
“It’s a very brutal and unacceptable bypass of the president of the United States and something like that simply damages [Israel],” Shelly Yachimovitch, a Knesset member from the opposition Labour Party told Israel Radio. “I don’t think anyone believes this simply fell on his desk.”
What does appear true is what when Kerry met with Dermer earlier in the week, the secretary of state heard no mention of the invitation.
Writing in Yedioth Ahronoth, Alon Pinkas reflected the views of a number of Israeli columnists in warning of the damage that was being done to Israel’s historically most important strategic partnership.
“In close to six years as prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu harmed, weakened and finally destroyed the interpersonal channel [with the US president] and created an unprecedented rift in the relations between president and prime minister.
“These relations are the greatest strategic asset that Israel has had since its establishment, and so this obligation is a moral imperative. He has abused this task in an irresponsible and outspoken manner, with an American president who is pro-Israeli in his actions, though anti-Netanyahu at heart.”

The troubled relations between the Obama administration and Netanyahu have been no secret in recent months. An anonymous senior US official was quoted describing Netanyahu as “a chickenshit” in an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg in the Atlantic several months ago.
Obama’s own view was caught in an unguarded hot-mic moment with former president of France Nicolas Sarkozy in 2011. Sarkozy complained he could not “bear” Netanyahu, describing him as a “liar”. In reply, Obama said: “You’re fed up with him, but I have to deal with him even more often than you.”

[h=2]Tehran and the P5+1 are considering a nuclear deal that leaves Iran a "threshold nuclear power"— an unacceptable outcome, Israel's ambassador to the US Ron Dermer says.[/h]

WASHINGTON — Israel's ambassador to the United States forcefully defended Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to address a joint session of Congress next month, describing the move as a "sacred duty" for the Israeli leader in a critical period for the "survival" of the state.

The current agreement under consideration by world powers and Iran, Ambassador Ron Dermer said on Sunday night, would leave Iran a "threshold nuclear power"— an outcome Israel cannot, and will not, accept.

"The prime minister’s visit to Washington is intended for one purpose, and one purpose only," Dermer told an audience in Florida: "To speak up while there is still time to speak up. To speak up when there is still time to make a difference."

Earlier this week, Democratic leadership criticized the political nature of Netanyahu's upcoming address— and his invitation to deliver it, after House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) offered the Israeli leader the opportunity without consulting the White House.

The Obama administration called it "unusual," and promptly announced its decision not to receive Netanyahu during his visit to Washington, citing the visit's proximity to national elections in Israel.

The speech is widely expected by the Obama administration to be a repudiation of the president's policies on Iran.

"The prime minister’s visit here is not intended to show any disrespect for President Obama," Dermer told the crowd; nor is it "intended to wade into your political debate."

Dermer compared the controversy over Netanyahu's upcoming address to recent criticism over his visit to Paris, where he partook in a march against terrorism and in solidarity with the victims of recent terror attacks there.

Alongside leaders of the free world— and leaders of a world less so— Netanyahu was cast as a political actor by his critics for highlighting the Zionist ethos in a shaken French Republic: Its Jews were welcome in Israel, he said, by the thousands, to defend themselves by themselves.

Anti-Semitism in the form of radical Islam in Europe threatens its Jewish communities, requiring Israeli leaders to remind the world of Israel's founding purpose, Dermer argued. So too is the depth of the threat from a nuclear Iran, forcing the prime minister to speak— "fearless" of the political repercussions.

In his State of the Union address this month, President Barack Obama said his goal with regards to Iran was to "negotiate a comprehensive agreement that prevents a nuclear-armed Iran, secures America and our allies— including Israel— while avoiding yet another Middle East conflict."

But the Israeli government has expressed dismay in recent months over the negotiating position of the US-led team in the talks. They have granted Iran the right to retain an enrichment program, they say, and have soften demands that it dismantle large swaths of its infrastructure.

Israel fears that the deal will be generous, that inspections for its enforcement will be weak and that the agreement will sunset in a decade, allowing Iran to walk into the nuclear club shortly thereafter.

"Today, the international community stands at the precipice of forging an agreement with Iran over its nuclear program," Dermer said on Sunday. "The agreement that is being discussed today is not an agreement that would dismantle Iran’s nuclear weapons capability, but rather one that could leave Iran as a nuclear threshold state."

"That is an agreement that could endanger the very existence of the State of Israel," he said.

Negotiators from Iran and the US, United Kingdom, France, Russia, China and Germany hope to seal a political framework agreement by March 30, and a comprehensive nuclear accord by June 30.

War Monger Scott and his ilk will lead Israel to her ruin. Thankfully, there are adults who are running things who will continue to keep her safe, in spite of the often times horrid and short sighted "leadership" of Bibi. Hopefully for Israel's sake, there will be new, common sense leadership in place soon after the elections, who will reconnect fully to their greatest Ally, the US, and stop pulling these juvenile, counter productive Political stunts that only hurt Israel.

Nobody pay attention to the fact the Kenyan told Bibi to show himself out the door of the White House a few years ago.

And... ignore the fact a senior White House official called Bibi, "chicken shit"

Also, those sanctions banning US air travel to Israel imposed unilaterally by the ManChild in Chief because he didn't like how Netanyahu was treating his Mooslim Palestinian brothers....never happened. Stop watching Fox News!

Bibi is the one to blame here. He's the one who stabbed the Jew-hater in the back for..."acting like a Republican" (whatever the fuck that means)

Anti American, Anti Israel??? That would be you, and your constant call to War. The words are my own, the thoughts are my own, and thankfully most Jews and most Americans agree with my words, and thoughts, and want peace, rather than that of a War monger's, that would lead Israel to her destruction, and America to a constant state of War, like sadly the current POTUS is doing, and Bibi has been doing.
Keeping trying to look cool for your facist, racist buddies down here in this sewer. It fits what you have become. In the meantime, I'll continue to pray for America, and for Israel, that they'll get it right in a few months and get sane, competent leadership in place to best deal with Hers, and the World's problems, and will realize that they need to foster good relations with America and the POTUS, no matter who it is and will be.
