I've met approximately 7 drug dealers in my lifetime and I can only think of one that took drugs and it was only on occasion, too . I would also say that about 75-80% of my illegal BM's I had in the past did not gamble. It was strictly business.
I guess it may not disturb some of you but it does me, especially when they BEAT me to another "out," simply because I placed a bet with one of them....
Some of the sports books who I KNOW don't bet include YABET, CRIS, GRANDE & WWTS....
Shrink, When you say a BM doesn't bet, is your definition of betting that of placing a bet at another out on a game that you have been hit on yourself as a BM?
Then Shrink, some on your list do place sport bets as well as play in casinos around the world. You also get many books who use post up money as if it was already lost. Casinos, backgammon, and sports are bet heavily by many off shore operators. What's to prevent them as long as they have the money available for customer payouts when the time comes. Hopefully not to many post Super Bowl or Final Four rushes will occur on send outs and the beat goes on.
Also yesterday Markdel said that he opened the price on 2 games higher than everyone else because he wanted action on the other side because he liked those 2 teams. Isn't that gambling? Exact same thing.
It's gambling if you sit on a number and "write it all" just because you like a side. But it's not gambling if you open a number higher/lower than everyone else because you like that side against other people's numbers. In the examples I was referring to, I avoided getting smacked with the early steam because I opened the Astros and White Sox (Saturday) WAY over market value because I was convinced that the other lines out there were way too low. Thus I avoided taking the early pop on both eventual winners and actually wrote small action on the losing side on the way up as some impatient scalpers took Milwaukee and Baltimore before the games peaked.
Now is this gambling or is it good bookmaking??? I would argue it's a little of both.
It shouldn't matter if anyone in the industry gambles as long as they don't get over their heads (i.e. gambling with money they no longer have). It is only logical that those involved in the industry are involved in the industry because they love (or loved at one time) to gamble.
This should only be an issue if it is a problem. The real question should be how many books gamble with POST UP MONEY. THAT is the underlying problem.
It's all about having control and unfortunately there are operators out there who simply do NOT exercise this type of control.
I know of few guys in the industry who do NOT play in the casinos. Mr. G and Mike from 7Palms do occasionally play in the casinos, despite their shops not being recognized for their gambling.
Besides my favorite BM, how many shops in the past few years have had financial trouble due to the principals involved losing their ass trying to beat the line? The use of post-up money to cover their ass is a valid point.
