Nashville Predators vs. Montreal Canadiens Preview and Predictions 2019-01-05

NHL Predictions 4th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/04/2019

Carey Price's return to the lineup was a tremendous one, and he hopes for a repeat performance when the Montreal Canadiens continue their three-game homestand Saturday against the Nashville Predators. Price, who missed three contests with a lower-body injury, made 33 saves in Thursday's win over Vancouver for his 42nd career shutout.

Price, who hadn't played since Dec. 22, received offensive support from Jonathan Drouin and defenseman Jordie Benn as Montreal began its homestand with its fifth victory in six overall games. Drouin's goal was his 13th in 41 contests this season, matching his total over 77 games in 2017-18 - his first campaign with the Canadiens. Nashville has lost 11 of its last 12 road contests (1-8-3) and seven of nine overall (2-5-2) after falling 4-3 in overtime at Detroit on Friday. Ryan Johansen increased his team-leading point total to 36 with his eighth goal of the season and second in three games.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Tennessee (Nashville), Sportsnet360, Sportsnet East, TVA, CITY (Montreal)

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (24-15-3): Phillip Di Giuseppe made his team debut on Friday after being claimed off waivers from Carolina three days earlier, registering two shots and blocking a team high-tying three in 11 minutes, 48 seconds of ice time. The 25-year-old left wing had recorded one goal and three assists in 21 games with the Hurricanes this season. Craig Smith, who has tallied in back-to-back contests, is riding a four-game point streak during which he also has notched two goals and two assists.

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (22-14-5): Joel Armia also made a solid return to the lineup on Thursday, notching an assist to give him four points over his last five games. The 25-year-old Finnish right wing had missed 25 contests with a knee injury. Price is four shutouts away from tying Hall-of-Famer Ken Dryden for third place on the franchise list.

OVERTIME

1. Canadiens C Max Domi, who leads the team with 38 points, has notched at least one assist in four of his last five games.

2. Nashville D P.K. Subban is two assists shy of 300 for his career.

3. Montreal has scored first in each of its last seven contests.

PREDICTION: Canadiens 3, Predators 2

Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Florida Panthers Preview and Predictions 2019-01-05

NHL Predictions 4th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/04/2019

Less than 24 hours after having their four-game road winning streak halted, the Columbus Blue Jackets attempt to begin another one when they continue a three-game trek Saturday against the Florida Panthers. Columbus had won six of seven overall before Friday's 4-2 setback at Carolina - its first road loss since Dec. 1 versus the New York Islanders.

Artemi Panarin scored his 101st career goal on Friday to increase his team-leading point total to 44. The 27-year-old Russian is riding a six-game point streak during which he has collected four tallies and six assists. Florida is making a brief stop at home during a span in which it plays seven of eight contests on the road. The Panthers began the stretch with a shootout win at Detroit on Monday before dropping a 4-3 decision in Buffalo three nights later.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Ohio (Columbus), FS Florida

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (23-14-3): Captain Nick Foligno missed his second straight game on Friday as he remained in Boston to be with his five-year-old daughter, who underwent heart surgery at the beginning of the week. Coach John Tortorella told the team's website that Foligno will return to the club whenever he feels he's ready. Cam Atkinson, who was held without a point for just the second time in seven games on Friday, leads the team with 24 goals - the same amount he totaled in 65 contests last season.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (17-16-6): Captain Aleksander Barkov registered a goal and an assist against the Sabres, giving him 13 points over his last nine games. The 23-year-old Finnish center has not been kept off the scoresheet in back-to-back contests since Nov. 23 and 24. Mike Hoffman, who leads the team in tallies after netting his fourth in six games on Thursday, is one away from reaching the 20-goal plateau for the fifth consecutive season.

OVERTIME

1. Panthers rookie F Jayce Hawryluk has recorded three goals in his first nine NHL games since being recalled from Springfield of the American Hockey League in mid-December.

2. Columbus, which entered Friday ranked 30th in the league on the power play, has scored just once with the man advantage in its last 13 contests.

3. Florida will honor Radek Dvorak, who is the franchise leader in short-handed goals (16) and ranks second in games played (613), during a pregame ceremony.

PREDICTION: Blue Jackets 4, Panthers 1

New York Islanders vs. St. Louis Blues Preview and Predictions 2019-01-05

NHL Predictions 4th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/04/2019

Having matched their longest winning streak of the season, the surging New York Islanders go for their sixth consecutive victory when they visit the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night. New York has won eight of its last nine to climb a season-high nine games over the NHL version of .500 for the first time since the end of the 2016-17 campaign.

The Islanders squeezed out a 3-2 overtime victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night, marking the first time the club has put together two five-game win streaks in 11 seasons. Goaltender Robin Lehner ran his personal winning streak to six for New York, which has surrendered only seven goals over the past five games. The Blues have struggled against the league's also-rans but came up big again against one of the heavyweights with a 5-2 thumping of defending Stanley Cup champion Washington on Thursday. It was the highest goal output since Nov. 23 for St. Louis despite the absence of star forward Vladimir Tarasenko due to illness.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, MSG Plus (New York), FS Midwest (St. Louis)

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (22-13-4): Defenseman Devon Toews was promoted from the minors for the start of the current winning streak and he kept it intact with the first goal of his career against Chicago, knocking home his own rebound in overtime. "He's played with a lot of poise, his skating allows us to transport the puck out of danger," coach Barry Trotz said. "He joins the play at the right times and gives us another option on some of our breakouts. He's been solid. That's why we're playing him and playing him a lot." All-Star center Mathew Barzal has scored eight goals during a six-game point streak.

ABOUT THE BLUES (16-18-4): Tarasenko was scratched about four hours before Thursday's game but he skated at Friday's optional practice and reported improvement, although he didn't say he was a definite for Saturday. "We'll see how Vladi is tomorrow and stuff," coach Craig Berube said Friday. "He was better today. So we'll wait till tomorrow and then make a decision. He came in and wanted to go on the ice. That's a good sign, so he's obviously a little bit better." Veteran defenseman Carl Gunnarsson returned to the lineup after missing 20 games due to a hand injury and registered a career-best plus-4 rating.

OVERTIME

1. Barzal has 17 points over his last 12 games.

2. Tarasenko has only two points -- both goals -- in his last 13 games overall but has seven tallies in 10 games versus the Islanders.

3. New York is 4-1-1 in the last six versus St. Louis, with G Thomas Greiss earning each of the wins.

PREDICTION: Islanders 3, Blues 2

Oilers vs. Kings Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 01/04/2019

With six goals and three assists in his last five games, Leon Draisaitl is doing his best to scribble his name next to captain Connor McDavid as the Edmonton Oilers' representatives for the upcoming NHL All-Star Game. Draisaitl, McDavid and company look to answer the Oilers' six-game losing skid with a second straight victory on Saturday when the team continues its four-game trek versus the Los Angeles Kings.

"It's a big road trip for us. When you're on a slide like that and you're about to face some divisional teams, it becomes even more important," Edmonton's Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said after seeing McDavid score two goals and set up another in Wednesday's 3-1 win over Arizona. McDavid recorded five straight multi-point performances (four goals, eight assists) and notched an assist in both contests versus Los Angeles in late November, with the Pacific Division rivals splitting the pair. The Kings followed a 5-1-1 mark by dropping their second straight decision with a 6-2 throttling by white-hot Tampa Bay on Thursday. Jonathan Quick is expected to try again for his 300th career win on Saturday after getting pierced for six goals against the Lightning.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, CBC, Sportsnet, Sportsnet360, CITY (Edmonton), FS West (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE OILERS (19-18-3): Edmonton could be receiving a boost to its offense as Alex Chiasson is in line to return to the ice after he was hit on the side of the knee with a slap shot on Dec. 27. The 28-year-old, who has scored three goals versus the Kings this season, has 16 tallies in just 31 games despite averaging 15:48 of ice time. Chaisson's plus-6 rating trails only McDavid (plus-7) on the team while his five power-play goals are just one shy of the captain and Draisaitl.

ABOUT THE KINGS (16-23-3): Dustin Brown (team-leading 11 goals), who had an assist versus Tampa Bay, recorded a hat trick in Los Angeles' 5-2 win over Edmonton on Oct. 25 and tallied in a 3-2 setback to the Oilers four nights later. The 34-year-old Brown is expected to play in his 1,078th career game on Saturday to snap a tie with Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille for second-most in franchise history, just behind Dave Taylor (1,111). Captain Anze Kopitar, who has 299 career goals, also set up a goal against the Lightning to register a point in nine of his last 12 games and boost his team-leading total to 27.

OVERTIME

1. Los Angeles D Drew Doughty's four goals this season have all come on the power play.

2. Nugent-Hopkins, who has three assists against the Kings this season, has 12 points (eight goals, four assists) in his last 13 games.

3. Kings C Alex Iafallo has collected just eight of his 21 points at home this season.

PREDICTION: Kings 2, Oilers 1

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. San Jose Sharks Preview and Predictions 2019-01-05

NHL Predictions 4th January 2019 by Gracenote
by Gracenote on 01/04/2019

Right wing Nikita Kucherov and the NHL-best Tampa Bay Lightning look to continue historic streaks when they go for a sweep of their California road trip Saturday night against the San Jose Sharks. Kucherov has recorded eight goals and 19 assists during his career-high 12-game point streak to climb to the top of the league scoring list as the Lightning have earned at least a point in 16 straight contests (15-0-1) - two shy of the franchise record in 2003-04.

"We want to win every night," Tampa Bay captain Steven Stamkos told reporters after Thursday's 6-2 win at Los Angeles. "We just have that belief no matter what happens. It's not easy to win in this league, but when you have the skill that we have and then you have the work and the will to get better you can go on stretches like this." The Lightning own 12 more points than anyone in the league after hitting the midpoint of the season, but three of their seven regulation losses have come against Pacific Division foes. San Jose sits three points out of first place in the Pacific after winning 5-4 at Colorado on Wednesday, earning a point for the 12th time in 15 games (10-3-2), but gave up 18 goals in the past four contests despite winning three of them. "We're still giving up a little too much," Sharks coach Peter DeBoer told reporters. "The offense is a result of us being a little bit loose and we're cheating a little bit and giving up an extra half goal a night. ... We can score goals, but we've got to find that balance."

TV: 11 p.m. ET, FS Sun (Tampa Bay), NBCS California (San Jose)

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (32-7-2): Kucherov registered multiple points in seven straight contests and owns 69 overall while linemate Brayden Point tops the team in goals (24) and posted at least a point in eight consecutive games. Stamkos snapped a two-game point drought with a goal to go along with two assists Thursday and rookie Mathieu Joseph became the seventh Tampa Bay player with double-digit tallies. Defenseman Victor Hedman has at least an assist in five straight games, including four on an NHL-best power play that is 7-of-15 in that span.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (22-13-7): San Jose may go into a battle against the league's best offense undermanned after Justin Braun (knee) left Wednesday's game and fellow defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic suffered an undisclosed injury. Brent Burns boasts three goals and six assists in the last four contests to push his team-leading total to 44 points while the team's other All-Star blue liner - Erik Karlsson - owns an 11-game point streak in which he scored once and set up 16 others. Captain Joe Pavelski tops the team with 24 goals and recorded one score and six assists in his past four contests.

OVERTIME

1. San Jose LW Evander Kane scored his 12th goal of the season Wednesday to draw within two of 200 in his career.

2. Tampa Bay RW Ryan Callahan notched his second multi-point game of the season Thursday with a goal and an assist.

3. The Lightning won both matchups last season while scoring five goals in each, including a 5-1 triumph in San Jose.

PREDICTION: Lightning 4, Sharks 3

What we saw against Utah was simply the Utes catching fire, and leaving the Devils without a pitchfork. Arizona State led 28-11 with 9:40 left in the first half, but Utah made 16-of-30 3-pointers - tied for second-most by an ASU opponent in history - and ran away from the Devils with its sharp shooting (29-of-57, .509), solid free throws (22-of-27, .815) and cleaning the glass (38-34).

But the Devils are still getting production from the usual suspects, as Remy Martin had 22 points and six assists, Zylan Cheatham scored 17 and Luguentz Dort and Rob Edwards each added 14.

I'm not giving up on ASU, as this is the same team that knocked off two Top 25 teams this season, on Nov. 19 in Las Vegas, where it beat then-No. 15 Mississippi State, 72-67, and on Dec. 22, when it toppled then-No. 1 Kansas, 80-76.

Colorado has lost three of it last four, including a 64-56 decision at Arizona on Jan. 3. The Buffs are playing their fourth straight road game, but just their second game since Christmas Day.

This is a tough road spot for the Buffs. Count on ASU to have its pitchfork in hand.

Lay the points.

My comp winner for Saturday is paying the hefty price, but I'm going to play Gonzaga over Santa Clara.

I know the Broncos have had a decent start to the season, but how good can they be when Gonzaga is laying -26 points?

The Zags have won 40 of the last 42 meetings against Santa Clara, including the last 17 matchups. And Gonzaga rolls into this one after an 89-55 win over CSU Bakersfield on Monday. Jeremy Jones recorded his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Rui Hachimura led the Zags with 22 points.

Gonzaga - which has won its last four games by an average of 43.75 points - has guys who rank among the nation's best on the stat sheet, as Josh Perkins ranks second in the country with 106 assists and third averaging 7.1 assists per game. Brandon Clarke is fourth in field goal percentage (69.5), third with 47 blocks and seventh averaging 3.13 blocks.

As a team, the Zags are first in the nation in field goal percentage (53.3 percent), second with 289 total assists, second in scoring offense (93.7), third with 279 made free throws and fifth in scoring margin (22.7).

The Zags have won all 19 West Coast Conference openers under coach Mark Few, and will take this one by huge numbers.

My Bonus Play for Saturday is on the San Diego State Aztecs, on the road catching points at Boise State, against a Broncos team that shouldn't be favored.

But it is, and it's likely because the oddsmakers are simply reading into preseason play.

The Aztecs become the final team in the Mountain West Conference to open league play, and come into this one having won their last nine games against intra-conference teams - their final six regular season games and three Mountain West tournament games en route to last year's title and automatic berth into the title game.

It marks the sixth longest active streak in the nation and is tied for the eighth-longest in school history.

Sure, San Diego State may be having a down year compared to years past, but so is the dreaded Mountain West, which is really bad this year. But the Aztecs are finding ways to win.

To wit: this past Tuesday, San Diego State overcame its second 19-point deficit of the season, this time defeating CSUN, 65-60, at Viejas Arena. In the last five seasons there have been 1,740 teams to play Division-I basketball, and San Diego State is just the sixth to overcome at least two 19-point deficits to win games in a single season.

San Diego State - which is on a 3-1 SU run and has outscored its opponents by 46 points during that stretch - is on a 13-3 SU run in league openers.

Look for the long-range game to kick in, and the Aztecs to steal this one on the road.

Mavs vs. 76ers

Jack’s Free Pick Saturday: Philadelphia 76ers -6

The situation is a favorable one for the Philadelphia 76ers tonight. They come in on two days’ rest and certainly will be ready to go tonight. They have one of the best home-court advantages in the NBA as they are 16-3 at home this season and winning by 9.0 points per game.

Dallas is just 3-17 on the road this season. And the Mavericks are now in a very tough spot as they’ll be playing the 2nd of a back-to-back and their 5th game in 7 days tonight. They won’t have much left in the tank here for the 76ers as they’ll be in their 5th different city in 7 days as well.

The Mavericks are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games when playing on zero days’ rest. The 76ers are 24-8 ATS in their last 32 home games vs. a team with a losing road record. Philadelphia is 4-1 ATS in its last five home meetings with Dallas. The home team is 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings. Bet the 76ers Saturday.

Pelicans vs. Cavs

1 Unit Bonus Play on New Orleans Pelicans -8

The Pelicans are ready for a coming out party tonight against the lowly Cleveland Cavaliers. It’s a hungry Pelicans team that has lost seven of their last nine games coming in. They’ve had the last two days off having last played on Wednesday. The Cavaliers had to play the Jazz last night and will be playing for a second consecutive day and their 5th game in 8 days. They have lost eight in a row coming in with seven of those eight losses coming by 8 points or more. They have a long list of injuries right now that is contributing to their dreadful performance during this eight-game skid. Give me the Pelicans.
