Preview: Army at Oklahoma
Gracenote
Sep 18, 2018

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray may not spend much more time playing college football, but he may have to put his next career on hold if he continues to match and exceed the standard he has already set for himself. Coming off consecutive games of 300-plus yards and three passing touchdowns, the two-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week will attempt to lead his fifth-ranked Sooners to a fourth straight victory Saturday when they host Army.

Drafted No. 9 overall by the Oakland Athletics in the Major League Baseball Draft this summer, Murray has transitioned seamlessly while replacing Heisman Trophy winner and top overall NFL Draft pick Baker Mayfield, ranking third in the Big 12 in passing yards (863) and seventh in rushing yards (169). The junior signal-caller was masterful for a second straight week at Iowa State last weekend, setting a career high with 348 passing yards and adding 77 more on the ground in a 38-28 win. "(Murray is) growing, no doubt. He can get better. He's leading our team. He's leading our offense right now and doing a pretty darn good job," coach Lincoln Riley said. The Knights will be looking to shut down a high-powered offense for a second straight contest after defeating Hawaii 28-21 last weekend, holding the Warriors 27 points and 178 yards below their previous season averages.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, No TV. LINE: Oklahoma -32.5.

ABOUT ARMY (2-1): The Knights rank sixth in FBS in rushing (306.7 yards) after leading the country a season ago, getting all-around contributions from Kelvin Hopkins Jr.; in his third career start last week, he became the first Army quarterback to have a 100-yard rushing and 100-yard passing game since Chris Carter in 2015. Hopkins' 206 yards rushing paces the team, although Darnell Woolfolk (153) and Calen Holt (150) have taken turns with the junior quarterback running for team-high totals over the first three contests. Connor Slomka (153) and Fred Cooper (110) also have rushed for over 100 yards on the season, while Camden Harrison and Christian Hayes lead Army with three catches and a touchdown reception apiece.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (3-0): Junior Marquise Brown, who ranks second in the Big 12 in receptions (19) and receiving yards (412), amassed 139 receiving yards in the first quarter and 189 of his 191 receiving yards before intermission last week, setting school records for the most receiving yards in a quarter and a half. Trey Sermon got the start at running back in place of the injured Rodney Anderson (knee, out for the season) and ran for a season-high 74 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Safety Justin Broiles became the first Oklahoma freshman defensive back to register at least 10 tackles in a game since Tony Jefferson in 2010 and only the 10th rookie to do so in school history.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Murray's passing yardage (1,222), touchdown-to-interception ratio (11:1) and passer efficiency rating (217.0) through 94 pass attempts at Oklahoma are better than those of the Sooners' three Heisman-winning quarterbacks (Mayfield, Sam Bradford and Jason White).

2. Army has amassed 420 passing yards through three games, 59 more than it had all of last season.

3. The Sooners are averaging 9.3 tackles for loss in 2018 (13th nationally) after recording 5.4 per game in 2017 (84th).

Preview: North Carolina State at Marshall
Gracenote
Sep 19, 2018

North Carolina State and Marshall should have an abundance of energy when they meet Saturday in Huntington, W.Va., since the undefeated teams had their games cancelled last week because of Hurricane Florence. N.C. State's chance to see where it stood against No. 13 West Virginia was washed away after opening the season with victories over Georgia State and FCS member James Madison by a combined 65-20.

The Wolfpack, though, won't have it easy against the Thundering Herd, who won at Miami (Ohio) 35-28 and defeated Eastern Kentucky 32-16. "Our first road game and a chance to play in a very good environment,'' N.C. State coach Dave Doeren said at his weekly press conference. "We know their fans will be great. It's an opportunity. I look at it more like that than a concern. Our guys will be excited about it. We like going on the road." The Wolfpack are led by Ryan Finley, who was 29-of-36 for 341 yards and three touchdowns in N.C. State's 37-20 victory over Marshall last season. Finley has four touchdowns and one interception while completing 74.1 percent of his passes in 2018, telling reporters: “We have a lot of weapons. It’s pretty special when I can just throw it out there to a lot of different targets.”

TV: 7 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network. LINE: N.C. State -5.5

ABOUT N.C. STATE (2-0): Junior wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, who had 161 yards on 14 receptions versus James Madison, missed the Georgia State game with an ankle injury but is expected to play Saturday. Former walk-on Thayer Thomas, a redshirt freshman, took advantage of Meyers' absence with nine catches for 114 yards a a highlight reel TD with Finley telling reporters about Thomas: "He's special, he's worked for it, and he's earned the right to be on this stage. And I've really been impressed with him." Junior wide receiver Kelvin Harmon is also off to a fast start with 12 catches and 162 yards and offers Finley another target as the running game struggles at 99 yards per game -- 119th among the 129 FBS teams in the nation.

ABOUT MARSHALL (2-0): Coach Doc Holliday handed the keys to freshman quarterback Isaiah Green, who is off to a solid start by completing 61.8 percent of his passes with five touchdowns and an interception. All five of the TDs have gone to senior wide receiver Tyre Brady (12.1 yards per 15 receptions, three scores) and junior wide receiver Obi Obialo (13.4, eight, two). Junior safety Malik Gant and senior linebacker Chase Hancock pace with the defense with 23 tackles and a sack apiece while junior linemen Ty Tyler and Channing Hames each boast two sacks.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Eighty-two percent of the Wolfpack's points have come from first-time scorers this season with senior RB Reggie Gallaspy II (two touchdowns) the only exception.

2. The Thundering Herd have won 37 of their last 38 games when ahead at halftime, losing to Charlotte 27-24 in 2016 after leading 24-17 at the break.

3. Finley has 12 300-yard passing games, second in school history to Philip Rivers (19 from 2000-03).

Preview: Texas Tech at Oklahoma State
Gracenote
Sep 18, 2018

If history is any indication, there will be a lot of points scored Saturday when No. 15 Oklahoma State hosts Texas Tech in the Big 12 opener for both teams. The Cowboys got contributions from all three phases in their win against No. 24 Boise State last week while Red Raiders quarterback Alan Bowman threw for 605 yards - most by a freshman in Big 12 history and six shy of the all-time national freshman record - and five touchdowns in a 63-49 win last weekend over Houston.

Texas Tech, despite losing its starting quarterback and four wide receivers from a year ago (all to the NFL), leads the country in total yards (624.3 per game), passing yards (448.7) and is third in scoring (55.7). "Texas Tech looks to be the same Tech that they've been for forever," Cowboys coach Mike Gundy told reporters earlier this week. "They've got a young quarterback who is throwing it around and has come along. He's a really good player. This league will be disappointed to see him for the next three or four years, or however long it'll be (before he leaves)." With the departure of Mason Rudolph to the NFL, Oklahoma State has turned to Taylor Cornelius to run the attack, and the senior was impressive in a 44-21 win over the Broncos, passing for 243 yards and a TD while adding two scores and 41 yards on the ground. Although the overall series is tied 21-21-3, Oklahoma State has won the last nine contests, including seven straight at home, and the two schools have combined for at least 75 points in each of the previous six meetings.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1. LINE: Oklahoma State -13.

ABOUT TEXAS TECH (3-0): Since replacing injured McLane Carter in the first quarter of the season opener against Ole Miss, Bowman has thrown for 1,160 yards and eight touchdowns without an interception, ranking second nationally in passing yards per game (386.7) and third in total offense (392.7). He helped junior wide receiver Antoine Wesley land in the school record books when the junior caught 13 passes for 261 yards against the Cougars - six more yards than the previous school record. Wesley ranks fourth nationally in receiving yards per game (137.7), fifth in receiving yards (413), seventh in receiving touchdowns (four) and 22nd in all-purpose yards (137.7).

ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE (3-0): Cornelius has completed 65-of-101 passes for 971 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions, finding Tylan Wallace 19 times for 319 yards and two scores. "(Cornelius is) very mature. He's older. He's been around for a long time and has a great demeanor for a quarterback," Gundy said of his signal-caller who played in just five games last season. "A month ago. I said he was on the tee box or the driving range, and we didn't know what he would do on the tee box on No. 1, but he's done pretty well on the first two or three holes." The high-powered Broncos offense totaled 414 yards, but the Cowboys recorded seven sacks and blocked two punts, one being returned for a TD and the other setting up the go-ahead score.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Texas Tech has not topped a ranked Oklahoma State team in Stillwater since recording a 27-3 victory over the No. 24 Cowboys in 1997.

2. The other 600-yard passing games in Tech history belong to Kansas City Chiefs starter Patrick Mahomes (734 yards two years ago), B.J. Symons (661 in 2003), Graham Harrell (646 in 2007) and Cody Hodges (643 in 2005).

3. Texas Tech, which has customarily struggled on defense, shut out FCS opponent Lamar but has yielded 38 points and nearly 600 yards per game in wins over Ole Miss and Houston.

Preview: Arkansas at Auburn
Gracenote
Sep 19, 2018

No. 11 Auburn gets a break from its tough early-season schedule when it hosts struggling Arkansas in an SEC matchup on Saturday. Auburn already has faced two teams currently ranked in the top 12, splitting those showdowns.

The Tigers had their 13-game home winning streak snapped with last week’s 22-21 loss to LSU, as Cole Tracy booted a 42-yard field goal in the final seconds. They’ll try to bounce back against an Arkansas team that is off to a sluggish start in Chad Morris’ first season as coach and coming off an embarrassing 44-17 home loss to North Texas. Auburn has won four of the last five meetings and outscored the Razorbacks 108-23 over the past two seasons, but coach Gus Malzahn isn’t concerned about his team overlooking its opponent. “Last week, we lost a big game, so I don’t think you have to worry about being overconfident,” Malzahn told reporters. “In this game, we will get their best and we have to be ready to compete.”

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network. LINE: Auburn -30

ABOUT ARKANSAS (1-2): Not much has gone right for the Razorbacks, who don’t really have the personnel to excel in Morris’ up-tempo offense. Devwah Whaley (205 yards, two touchdowns) has put up decent numbers, but six interceptions led to 24 points in the loss to North Texas, prompting Morris to give Ty Storey the start at quarterback this week in favor of Cole Kelley. The defense, which has been adequate against the run but torched through the air, expects to get back linebacker Dre Greenlaw from an ankle injury that sidelined him for two games.

ABOUT AUBURN (2-1, 0-1 SEC): The Tigers have a strong ground game behind freshman JaTarvious Whitlow (254 yards, two TDs). The passing game has been effective as well, as Jarrett Stidham has thrown for 584 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions, and 14 different receivers have caught a pass. Linebacker Deshaun Davis (4.5 tackles for loss) anchors the defense, which has been excellent against the run but had a tough time getting off the field on third down against LSU.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Auburn kickers have converted 237 consecutive extra-point attempts dating to 2013, the longest active streak in the FBS and the longest in SEC history.

2. Arkansas has not won its SEC opener since 2010 at Georgia.

3. Whitlow is the first Auburn freshman with back-to-back 100-yard rushing performances since Michael Dyer in 2010.

Top 25 Notes

-- There were plenty of takers on Mississippi catching 23 points at home aginst top-ranked Alabama. It wasn't nearly enough, as the Crimson Tide steamrolled the Rebels by a 62-7 score for their third cover in as many outings. 'Bama has been favored by 23 or more points in every outing so far, but they haven't won by less than 37 so far. Alabama is averaging 56.7 points per game (PPG) through three outings with the 'over' going 3-0. ... It was the final game before Urban Meyer is allowed to come back, and Ohio State made sure he returned to a team that is 3-0 SU. The Buckeyes and TCU were locked in a defensive battle at Jerry World, but suddenly Ohio State erupted for 20 points in a four-minute span to pick up the victory. However, the Horned Frogs were able to hang on for the cover at most shops. ... Washington opened the conference slate with a hard-fought and hard-hitting 21-7 victory at Utah. The 'under' is a perfect 3-0 so far this season for the Huskies, as they have allowed an average of just 10.3 PPG.

-- Arizona State arrived in the Top 25 this week and they were subsequently shown the door by San Diego State, 28-21. The Sun Devils struggled on offense until the very end of the game, and their rushing defense struggled mightily. That's not a good sign with Washington looming next time out.

-- Boise State-Oklahoma State was one of the most underrated games on the Week 3 card. After a scoreless first quarter, things started to get away from the Broncos in a hurry, and the Cowboys were able to pick up their second consecutive cover, moving to 2-0 ATS against FBS foes this season. Boise slipped to 2-1 ATS after routing their first two foes.

-- Wisconsin last tasted defeat during the regular season on Oct. 15, 2016 against Ohio State. Not many thought the Badgers would be in danger of that streak coming to an end against Brigham Young, but the Cougars had other plans. The Badgers not only slipped to 0-3 ATS on the season, but they misfired on a field goal in the final minute to lost 24-21 at Camp Randall, making no one want to jump around

Big Five Conference Report (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC)

-- Duke continues to play well, and they notched another road victory at Baylor, 40-27 to move to 3-0 SU/ATS. ... Georgia Tech headed to Pittsburgh and it was a rough road trip. The Panthers were routed last week, while the Yellow Jackets also suffered defeat. Someone had to bounce back, and it was the Panthers picking up a 24-19 win to drop the Ramblin' Wreck to 0-3 ATS. ... Clemson held on for a 38-7 win against Georgia Southern, ambling through a home outing against a non-Power 5 team. They had a bit of a hangover after their impressive 28-26 nailbiter at Texas A&M. The games wasn't particularly close, but it was the Eagles coming away with another cover to go 3-0 ATS with the 'under' also 3-0. ... Syracuse-Florida State was expected to be a close game, as the Orange were installed as three-point underdogs at home. It didn't turn out that way, as 'Cuse routed FSU 30-7 to give Willie Taggart another lose. Things aren't exactly going to plan under the new regime, as Florida State is 0-3 ATS so far.

-- Indiana is flying a bit under the radar, but they moved to a perfect 3-0 SU with a 38-10 win over in-state rival Ball State. The Hoosiers picked up their first cover of the season in three tries, while the 'under' connected for the second straight outing, both at home. ... Minnesota earned a third straight win and cover by whitewashing Miami (Ohio) by a 26-3 score. The Golden Gophers have allowed just 9.0 PPG through three games, but things will get a lot more difficult once conference play begins. ... Nebraska joined Wisconsin in the loser's lounge with a disappointing 24-19 setback against Troy. The Cornhuskers are 0-2 with both losses at home for the first time since 1947.

-- Kansas won against Rutgers 55-14, as they have earned back-to-back wins against FBS opponents for the first time since the 2009 season. It makes their opening game setback against FCS Nicholls State even that much more surprising. ... Texas Tech racked up a 63-49 shootout over Houston, as the Red Raiders moved to 3-0 on the 'over' this season. Defense is going to be an issue for this team, as they have allowed 48.0 PPG in two games against FBS foes. ... Texas bounced back with an impressive 37-14 win over USC, a team suddenly in freefall and unable to score on offense. The Longhorns earned their first cover in emphatic fashion and the defense allowed a season-low 14 points. Texas won for the 900th time in school history, joining Ohio State and Michigan as the only FBS schools in the club.

-- It's been a long time since UCLA struggled this badly, and an 0-3 SU/1-2 ATS start isn't exactly what the Bruins faithful had in mind when Chip Kelly was hired. But Fresno State came into the Rose Bowl and dropped the Bruins by a 38-14 score. Not only is it hard to figure a path to bowl eligibility, it's hard to see where UCLA is going to get a win anytime soon. ... Arizona doubled up FCS Southern Utah with a 62-31, and for the first time QB Khalil Tate looked like a Heisman Trophy candidate. That ship might have already sailed, but the Wildcats served notice that they're still a dangerous offense. They earned their first cover in three tries.

-- Tennessee did a good job on defense, shutting out UTEP by a 24-0 count. However, the offense still has a long way to go if they're going to be successful during the SEC gauntlet. ... Vanderbilt left a ton of points on the field in their 22-17 loss at Notre Dame, but they easily covered the 14-point number. The Commodores moved to a perfect 3-0 ATS while the 'under' is also 3-0 for Vandy. ... LSU tossed their hat into the championship contender ring by upending Auburn by a 22-21 score on the Plains. The Tigers are 2-0 ATS in two games away from Death Valley this season. ... Arkansas was dumped at home by North Texas of Conference USA, 44-17. The Razorbacks are 0-2 SU/ATS in two battles against FBS teams this season with the 'under' 2-0 in those games. ... Texas A&M improved to 3-0 ATS with a 48-10 win against Louisiana-Monroe.
