Navy rides the momentum of a stirring fourth-quarter comeback victory into its home meeting with Lehigh on Saturday in their first encounter since 1987, but it won't be taking its FCS opponent lightly. Junior Malcolm Perry and senior Zach Abey, who form the Midshipmen's two-pronged quarterback attack, each scored a touchdown in the final period with Abey's coming with 2:37 left in the 22-21 victory over Memphis.

“Whether FBS or FCS, every team has good athletes, good coaches, good strength programs, good nutrition programs,” Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo told reporters. “We’re the Naval Academy. We don’t act like we’re any better than anyone else. We just come to work every week. It would be very foolish for us to think any differently about who we are.” Perry, who took over from Abey as the starter late last season, has averaged 5.2 yards on 53 carries with three touchdowns this year -- one for 75 yards -- while Abey, who is listed as a wide receiver on the roster, has 23 yards with five of his 10 carries resulting in TDs. “Everybody knows what’s going to happen,'' Niumatalolo said. "It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what we’re going to do. (Abey) just finds a way to get first downs and touchdowns.” Lehigh is led by senior running back Dominick Bragalone, the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year who led the FCS with 1,388 yards and 18 touchdowns rushing last season.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network. LINE: None

ABOUT LEHIGH (1-1): Senior quarterback Brad Mayes, an all-Patriot preseason team selection, has completed 59.6 percent of his passes with one touchdown and an interception this season after recording 31 TD passes and 12 interceptions as a junior. Bragalone, the first Mountain Hawk to reach 1,000 yards in three straight seasons, has totaled 155 with three touchdowns this season after being held to 18 yards on seven carries in last week's 31-9 loss to Villanova. Senior defensive back Sam McCloskey has a team-high three pass breakups and shares the club lead with 15 tackles.

ABOUT NAVY (1-1): Perry rushed for 166 yards on a career-high 36 carries last week but it was the defense that carried the Midshipmen. After yielding 522 yards -- 436 passing -- in a season-opening 59-41 loss at Hawaii, Navy forced four turnovers (three fumbles, interception) against Memphis while holding the Tigers to 145 passing yards, perhaps aided by a steady rain. Leading the way are senior safety Sean Williams, who has a team-high 14 tackles and forced two fumbles last week, and senior linebacker Taylor Heflin (13 tackles), who recorded a sack in each of the first two games.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Navy is averaging 295 rushing yards -- 14th nationally -- after finishing second in the country with 351.4 last season.

2. Lehigh, which is playing an FBS opponent for the first time since 2003, totaled 176 yards versus Villanova -- it's lowest total since recording 129 against New Hampshire in 2010.

3. Abey shares the FBS lead in rushing touchdowns with Heisman Trophy hopeful Jonathan Taylor of Wisconsin and Cincinnati's Michael Warren II.

No. 22 Michigan looks for its second straight win when it wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule at home against SMU on Saturday. The Wolverines bounced back from an opening week loss to eighth-ranked Notre Dame with a 49-3 victory over Western Michigan, which ended a four-game slide dating to last season, and Michigan hopes to stay on the winning track by beating an American Athletic Conference opponent for the third straight year.

"We want to start fast and play an entire 60 minutes," Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters. "I like the way our team approached last week as they had an edge to them and I want to see that again this weekend." Michigan routed Central Florida 51-14 in 2016 before taking down fellow AAC foe Cincinnati 36-14 last season and are 24-5-1 against teams currently in the American, including a 3-0 record since the conference's inception in 2013. The Wolverines have won 10 of their last 11 non-conference games in the regular season and hope to knock off the Mustangs in their first meeting since 1963. SMU is off to a rocky start following back-to-back losses, including a 42-12 setback to 14th-ranked TCU in the Battle for the Iron Skillet, and hope to get back on track by notching a signature win under first-year head coach Sonny Dykes.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network. LINE: Michigan -35.5.

ABOUT SMU (0-2): Ben Hicks was limited to 111 yards on 18-of-38 passing as the Mustangs were held to 242 yards on offense en route to their seventh straight loss to the Horned Frogs. "We've just got to find a way to stay on the field and sustain some drives," Hicks told reporters. "I think that's something we've done a poor job of in the last two weeks." Junior running back Braeden West was the lone bright spot on offense as he rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown to help put him over 100 all-purpose yards for the second straight game this season and for the 13th time in his career.

ABOUT MICHIGAN (1-1): Shea Patterson completed 12-of-17 passes for 125 yards and three touchdowns, including a 44-yard scoring strike to Nico Collins, which was the first TD pass from a Michigan quarterback to a wide receiver since Sept. 9, 2017. Karan Higdon ran for 156 yards and a touchdown while Chris Evans added another 86 on the ground to go along with a pair of TDs as the Wolverines racked up 308 rushing yards against Western Michigan. Nose tackle Aubrey Solomon will be sidelined for the next few weeks after undergoing surgery on his right knee while fellow defensive lineman Lawrence Marshall is week-to-week with an undisclosed injury.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Michigan is 12-2 in the month of September under Harbaugh.

2. The Wolverines are 9-0 in non-conference home games since 2015.

3. Michigan has surrendered six points in the last six quarters.

Preview: North Texas at Arkansas
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

The history books suggest an easy win for Arkansas on Saturday in its non-conference game against visiting North Texas, but coach Chad Morris isn't buying it -- not after the way his team folded last week. The Razorbacks blew an 18-point lead in falling at Colorado State 34-27 and will need to be on their toes to defend the prolific passing attack of the Mean Green.

"How you respond is the only thing that matters," Morris told the media Monday. "We're playing an improved North Texas team. First 2-0 start since 1994, leads the country in passing. We'll have our work cut out for us." The Razorbacks struggled defending the pass against Colorado State, allowing 389 yards, including 150 yards and two touchdowns in the decisive fourth quarter. Utilizing a run game that has produced 379 yards, including 193 by Devwah Whaley, will be critical to keeping Mason Fine and the Mean Green offense on the sidelines. Fine, the reigning Conference USA Player of the Year, has connected for 862 yards and seven touchdowns while completing 72.2 percent of his passes this season for North Texas, which leads the country in passing yards per game (457.5).

TV: 4 p.m. ET, SEC Network. LINE: Arkansas -7

ABOUT NORTH TEXAS (2-0): Fine has no shortage of weapons to connect with in the passing game as he has found 15 receivers, but his favorites have been Rico Bussey, Jr. and Jalen Guyton, who have combined for 29 receptions, 443 yards and six touchdowns. Fine, a 5-11, 185-pound junior from Oklahoma, is on pace to smash the school records he set last season in completions (324), attempts (511), passing yards (4,052) and touchdowns (31) and already ranks in the top six in school history in each of those categories. DeAndre Torrey has all three of the team's running touchdowns and is the leading rusher despite averaging only 2.8 yards per carry.

ABOUT ARKANSAS (1-1): After playing well in a blowout of Eastern Illinois, Ty Storey made his first career start at quarterback for the Razorbacks against Colorado State, but the junior didn't last long after completing 5-of-13 passes with two interceptions. Sophomore Cole Kelley took over and was far more effective, throwing touchdown passes to La'Michael Pettway for 25 yards and T.J. Hammonds for 64 yards that staked Arkansas to a 27-9 lead midway through the third quarter. Both quarterbacks have hit for big plays in the passing game as the Razorbacks have seven plays of 25 yards or longer, including five for touchdowns.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The Razorbacks are 10-0 against Conference USA.

2. Arkansas owns a 9-0 mark against North Texas, but the teams have met only twice since 1972, including a 66-7 victory for the Razorbacks in the most recent game in 2007.

3. North Texas, which has scored its most points ever through two games (104), hasn't beaten a Power Five team since thwarting Indiana in 2011 and are 3-36 against teams from the SEC.

Preview: Texas-San Antonio at Kansas State
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

Kansas State looks to put together a confidence-building performance on both sides of the ball before Big 12 Conference play begins when it hosts Texas-San Antonio on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats, who open league play at West Virginia next week, rallied from 12 points down in the fourth quarter to survive South Dakota 27-24 in their opener before being routed by Mississippi State at home last week.

“It sucks,” Kansas State freshman defensive end Wyatt Hubert told reporters. “We’re not doing what we’re supposed to be doing and we’re not playing to our ability. That is very frustrating.” The Wildcats have managed one touchdown in the first three quarters this season and the quarterbacks are completing 44.9 percent of their passes, while the defense gave up 538 yards against Mississippi State. Junior running back Alex Barnes has led the way with 178 yards rushing for Kansas State, which has suffered five turnovers - four against South Dakota - in the first two outings. UTSA, which finishes a gauntlet of three straight games against Power Five teams after starting it with losses to Arizona State (49-7) and Baylor (37-20), was picked fifth out of seven teams in the West Division of Conference USA in the preseason poll.

TV: 4 p.m. ET, FSN. LINE: Kansas State -21.5

ABOUT TEXAS-SAN ANTONIO (0-2): Coach Frank Wilson liked the effort against Baylor as the Roadrunners were within a touchdown at halftime: “I thought our team took a step in the right direction,” he told reporters. “I thought we were vastly improved from a week ago.” Junior quarterback Cordale Grundy has thrown for 344 yards and a touchdown, but has two interceptions, while senior wide receiver Greg Campbell Jr. (eight receptions, 96 yards) is the top target. Sophomore B.J. Daniels showed plenty of promise last week with 90 yards rushing and a touchdown after managing just 24 on nine carries in the opener against Arizona State.

ABOUT KANSAS STATE (1-1): Sophomore Skylar Thompson (15-of-31, 147 yards passing, two touchdowns, one interception) and junior Alex Delton (7-of-18, 105, two interceptions) have shared the quarterback duties in the first two games. Delton admitted they will have to be better under center, but the Wildcats’ offensive line must give them more time (eight sacks allowed) to find junior receivers Dalton Schoen (five catches, 88 yards, TD) and Isaiah Zuber (seven, 79, TD). Senior defensive back Duke Shelley, who ranks fifth among active players in career passes defended after adding five in 2018, leads the team on the other side of the ball with 12 tackles.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Kansas State is 23-4 against current members of Conference USA, including a 30-3 victory at UTSA in 2015.

2. The Roadrunners are 3-for-3 scoring touchdowns in the red zone this season.

3. Wildcats senior OT Dalton Risner is expected to make his 41st career start Saturday, fifth most among the school’s OL since 1989.

Preview: Colorado State at Florida
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

It's back to business for Florida after its shocking 27-16 home loss to Kentucky that ended the Gators' 31-game winning streak over the Wildcats and knocked Dan Mullen's team out of the top 25. Next up at home Saturday is their first-ever meeting with a Colorado State team coming off its first victory of the season, 34-27 over Arkansas thanks to scoring 25 unanswered points in the final 18 minutes with the winning touchdown coming with eight seconds left.

"I want to see, now that we got punched in the face with a little bit of adversity, how we handle that aspect," Mullen told reporters. "Are we still taking the steps forward necessary to be successful?" The Gators expected to suffer some growing pains in Mullen's first year in Gainesville but it's the way they have been struggling that has been a surprise as their talented offensive and defensive lines have been pushed around, even by undersized Charleston Southern in the opener. In the loss to Kentucky on Saturday, Florida was outrushed 303-128 - the first time the Gators allowed more than 300 yards rushing since 2014 - and the Wildcats averaged 7.4 yards per carry, while their own ground game spent the first half completely bottled up with just 51 yards on 17 carries (3.0 yards per carry). The story is much the same for Mike Bobo's Rams up front, where they too have been manhandled on both sides of the line of scrimmage, and outgained 800-317 on the ground in three games, including 299-40 in Saturday's comeback shocker against Arkansas.

TV: 4 p.m. ET, SEC Network. LINE: Florida -20.

ABOUT COLORADO STATE (1-2): The Rams really struggled their first two games so Saturday's comeback win gives them hope, beginning with the performance of quarterback K.J. Carta-Samuels, a grad transfer who rebounded from a poor first half to complete 22 of 27 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns in the final two quarters against Arkansas. "It shows that we fight, no matter what," Carta-Samuels told reporters. "No matter if we're down by 40. Whatever, we're gonna fight and we're gonna try to score. We think we can be in any game." The Rams' defense surrendered over 40 points in each of the first two games and they looked like it was on its way to a repeat midway through the third quarter Saturday with 34 points allowed, but the unit completely shut down Arkansas when it counted, particularly in the fourth quarter, when the Razorbacks were held to just 16 yards.

ABOUT FLORIDA (1-1): The surprising lack of a ground game is putting pressure on quarterback Feleipe Franks, and while the sophomore is maturing -- he threw for 232 yards with two TDs and one interception vs. Kentucky -- he isn't ready to shoulder the full burden just yet. The Gators' running woes are worrisome since the line was expected to be a strength, led by preseason All-SEC left tackle Martez Ivey, but the unit is hoping to get back on track with more physicality against Colorado State in preparation for the tough SEC defensive fronts that are ahead. The defense also needs to work on its toughness after the Wildcats overpowered the front line but the lapses were everywhere as they missed 20 tackles against Kentucky that led to 168 yards in gains.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The Gators have won 17 consecutive games against first-time opponents.

2. Colorado State's victory over Arkansas last week was just its third ever against current SEC members.

3. In his final four seasons at Mississippi State, Mullen went 10-5 in games following a loss.

Preview: Houston at Texas Tech
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

Two up-tempo and efficient offenses will collide when Texas Tech hosts former Southwest Conference foe Houston on Saturday. The high-scoring Red Raiders rank tied for 11th nationally while averaging 52 points and Houston is 25th at 45 per game.

Houston junior quarterback D'Eriq King leads the country with 31.0 points per game responsible after recording 10 touchdowns and a two-point conversion in two contests. Freshman quarterback Alan Bowman has the Red Raiders ranked eighth nationally in average passing yards (370.5) after taking over for junior McLane Carter early in Week 1. Carter's high-ankle sprain will be evaluated throughout the week, Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters, so the Cougars will have to prepare for both quarterbacks. The Cougars lead the series 18-12-1 - including an 8-6 mark at Texas Tech - but have lost two of the three meetings since the SWC disbanded in 1995.

TV: 4:15 p.m. ET, Fox. LINE: Texas Tech -1

ABOUT HOUSTON (2-0): King has thrown for 566 yards and seven touchdowns and rushed for 64 yards along with three more scores while Patrick Carr leads the Cougars' ground attack with 136 yards. Houston has gotten big plays from sophomore receiver Marquez Stevenson, who has seven catches for 147 yards and two scores, three rushes for 120 yards and a score and two kickoff returns for 54 yards. Senior safety Garrett Davis has two interceptions while sophomore end Isaiah Chambers (team-high three sacks) and junior tackle Ed Oliver each have four tackles for loss.

ABOUT TEXAS TECH (1-1): Bowman has thrown for 555 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions and no sacks. Texas Tech held out Da'Leon Ward (team-high 90 rushing yards, two TDs) last week but got big production from quarterback Jett Duffey (81 rushing yards, one TD) and Demarcus Felton (69 rushing yards, two TDs) in a lopsided win against Lamar. The Red Raiders forced four turnovers last week - including redshirt freshman Adrian Frye's 48-yard interception return for a touchdown - to push their streak to 16 consecutive games with a takeaway.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Texas Tech has scored at least 50 points at home 13 times since 2015, which leads the nation during that span.

2. Houston ranks third nationally with 19 plays of at least 20 yards, with six of them going for touchdowns (four passing, two rushing).

3. Kingsbury (2008-11), defensive coordinator David Gibbs (2013-14) and three Texas Tech defensive assistant coaches previously coached at Houston.

Preview: Ohio at Virginia
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

Virginia looks to bounce back after a tough road loss last week to host Ohio, although the game will be played in Nashville because of Hurricane Florence. The Cavaliers will regain the form that allowed them to rout Richmond 42-13 in their opener, while Ohio won its only game this season in dramatic fashion two weeks ago.

Virginia traveled to Indiana last weekend and kept it close but couldn’t overcome freshman running back Stevie Scott, who gashed the Cavaliers for 204 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. “We didn't think they'd be able to run the football effectively," Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall told reporters after the game. "So we learned a lot about our team today.” Ohio is coming off a bye last week after outscoring Howard 21-10 in the second half for a comeback 38-32 win on Sept. 1. Backup quarterback Quinton Maxwell relieved an inefficient Nathan Rourke and threw for two touchdowns and added two more on the ground.

TV: 4:30 p.m. ET, ACC Network Extra. LINE: Virginia -3.5.

ABOUT OHIO (1-0): Maxwell’s performance - 17-of-25 for 233 yards and eight rushes for 21 yards - was somewhat unexpected considering Rourke was supposed to be the unquestioned starter entering the season. The plan for Virginia is simple - both will get snaps early and whoever performs better will keep playing. There’s a controversy at quarterback, but no matter who is under center he’ll be looking to throw to Papi White after the senior receiver produced eight catches for 154 yards and a touchdown in the opener.

ABOUT VIRGINIA (1-1): Virginia’s offense revolves around dual-threat quarterback Bryce Perkins, as the junior-college transfer has thrown for 291 yards and run for another 231 yards through two games. However, the Cavaliers were unable to move the ball through the air against the Hoosiers, gaining just 106 yards on 25 attempts. The special teams did its part in Virginia’s upset attempt last week, blocking a point-after attempt and a field-goal attempt.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Perkins is the first Virginia quarterback to run for 100 yards in back-to-back games since Hall of Famer Bill Dudley in 1941.

2. Virginia RB Olamide Zaccheaus has at least one reception in 31 straight games, dating back to Nov. 7, 2015.

3. Ohio has racked up 400-plus yards of offense in three straight games dating back to last season.

Preview: New Hampshire at Colorado
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

Colorado’s 2-0 start isn’t just a 2-0 start as they’ve thrashed in-state rival Colorado State 45-13 in Denver and rallied to clip former Big 12-rival Nebraska 33-28 on the road in Lincoln. Up next is the Buffaloes’ home opener, a Saturday afternoon date with FCS power New Hampshire.

Situated between the two emotional season-opening wins and its Sept. 28 Pac-12 opener against UCLA, Saturday’s contest is an obvious trap game for Colorado. But even with the program off to its first 2-0 start without a home game since 1920, the Buffaloes are saying all the right things about avoiding a letdown. “We’re just going to treat (New Hampshire) like anybody else,” linebacker Nate Landman told the Boulder Daily Camera earlier this week. “This game is the most important game on our schedule right now. ... We’re just going to focus on being Colorado and playing Colorado football.”

TV: 5 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network. LINE: None

ABOUT NEW HAMPSHIRE (0-2): The Wildcats have qualified for the FCS playoffs in a nation-leading 14 straight seasons but have opened the new campaign with losses at Maine (35-7) and at home to Colgate (10-3). Offense, clearly, has been an issue with sophomore quarterback Christian Lupoli completing 19-of-37 attempts for 231 yards and the team’s ground game totaling only 58 yards on 69 attempts, hurt by nine sacks allowed so far. Defensively, linebacker Quinlen Dean has made his presence felt with a team-leading 27 total tackles, including 3.5 for losses, and a forced fumble.

ABOUT COLORADO (2-0): Junior quarterback Steven Montez appears to have taken a big stride forward as he has completed 55-of-75 attempts (73.3 percent) for 689 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception so far while rushing for 27 yards and another TD. His new favorite weapon is sophomore wideout Laviska Shenault Jr., the reigning Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week who’s totaled 21 receptions for 388 yards and two TDs, in addition to a rushing score. Defensively, the Buffaloes have surrendered 849 yards so far in the two games but have been stout when it’s mattered most, having forced four turnovers and receiving standout play from a pair of sophomore in Landman (team-leading 28 tackles and two interceptions) and defensive end Mustafa Johnson (16 tackles, including 4.5 for losses).

EXTRA POINTS

1. This will be the first meeting between the programs, and Colorado is just 5-2 all-time against FCS foes.

2. Montez ranks 18th nationally in passing efficiency (178.6) while Shenault is tops in receptions per game (10.5) as the only player averaging double figures.

3. New Hampshire senior WR Neil O’Connor has accounted for 12 of the team’s 22 receptions so far for 132 yards.

Preview: San Jose State at Oregon
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert has seen limited action in the team’s first two lopsided wins and figures to have another short night Saturday when the 23rd-ranked Ducks host San Jose State. Herbert has tossed nine touchdown passes for Oregon, which ranks fourth nationally in scoring at 60 points per game after rolling to victories over Bowling Green (58-24) and FCS-member Portland State (62-14).

A Heisman Trophy candidate who has thrown a touchdown pass in 17 consecutive games, Herbert played just nine drives in last Saturday’s win over Portland State, completing 20 of his 26 passes for 250 yards and four scores. A total of 11 different Ducks have rushed for or caught a touchdown – including sophomore wideout Jaylon Redd, who is tied for the Pac-12 lead with three touchdown receptions. Oregon coach Mario Cristobal said his team won’t be guilty of overconfidence against San Jose State, which opened with a demoralizing 44-38 loss to UC Davis before falling 31-0 at Washington State. “The approach we have is, stay humble, stay hungry, attack every single opportunity that we have created ourselves,” he told reporters. “We have created great opportunities for ourselves because of the way we are playing."

TV: 5 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network. LINE: Oregon -41.5

ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE (0-2): Sophomore quarterback Montel Aaron competed 13-of-25 passes for 94 yards against Washington State, but the Spartans were held to 109 total yards and fell to 45-153 all-time against Pac-12 opponents. Linebackers Kyle Harmon and Jesse Osuna and cornerback Nehemiah Shelton each recorded interceptions for the Spartans, who were picked to finish last in the West Division of the Mountain West preseason poll and rank 124th nationally in team defense. Bryce Crawford punted 11 times for a 43.7 yard average last week and also serves as the team’s placekicker.

ABOUT OREGON (2-0): Tony Brooks-James ran for 107 yards and two scores while freshman CJ Verdell ran for 106 yards and another touchdown in last Saturday’s win over Portland State, which allowed 562 yards while gaining 224. Oregon, which begins conference play at home against Stanford next week, has committed a total of eight penalties for 90 yards in two games and enters Saturday’s contest with no major injuries. Senior Jalen Jelks leads the defense in tackles with 15, two more than fellow linebackers Troy Dye and Kaulana Apelu.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The teams are meeting for the first time since 1998, with Oregon holding a 12-6 lead in the series.

2. Oregon offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo played quarterback at San Jose State from 1998-2002.

3. The Ducks have won 22 consecutive home non-conference games dating back to 2008.

Preview: Idaho State at California
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

California’s quarterback situation is becoming clearer with each win as coach Justin Wilcox prepares his team for the start of Pac-12 play on Sept. 29 against Oregon. Redshirt freshman Chase Garbers will share time with sophomore Brandon McIlwain on Saturday when the Bears host FCS-member Idaho State, which has never beaten a Pac-12 opponent.

Ross Bowers started Cal’s season-opening win over North Carolina but has been replaced by the duo of Garbers and McIlwain, who combined to go 23-for-35 for 214 yards in last Saturday’s 21-18 win over BYU – including 119 rushing yards on 21 carries. Wilcox likes the mobility that Garbers and McIlwain bring to an offense led by running back Patrick Laird, who set a career high with seven catches for 53 yards and a score against the Cougars. Cal’s defense continues to impress with six interceptions through its first two games, giving the team reason to believe they could surprise in the Pac-12 North. The opportunistic defense should have little trouble containing Idaho State, which opened its season with a 45-10 win over Division II Western State on Aug. 31.

TV: 6 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network. LINE: None

ABOUT IDAHO STATE (1-0): Tanner Gueller was 17-of-27 for 213 yards, one touchdown and one interception while James Madison carried the ball 19 times for 114 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Western State. Mitch Gueller added four catches for 81 yards and a TD for the Bengals, who were picked to finish 12th in the Big Sky Conference preseason coaches’ poll. The defense held Western State to 135 total yards behind interceptions by Caleb Brown and Kennon Smith along with Paea Moala’s career-high 13 tackles.

ABOUT CAL (2-0): Wide receiver Kanawai oa had seven catches and 93 yards in the win over BYU, but the offense was overshadowed by the play of the defensive unit, led by safety Jaylinn Hawkins (three interceptions on the season) and inside linebacker Evan Weaver. A junior from Washington, Weaver is third in the Pac-12 in tackles (26) and tied for fourth in pass breakups (three). “He’s a tough guy, man,” Wilcox told reporters. “Weaves is a throwback. He loves playing. He loves contact. He’s trying to make every tackle. That’s awesome. You love that about him.”

EXTRA POINTS

1. Cal is 9-0 against FCS opponents – including a 73-14 win over Grambling State in 2015.

2. Idaho State snapped a 27-game losing streak to FBS schools with its 30-28 victory at Nevada on Sept. 16, 2017.

3. Cal has held its first two opponents to a combined three points in the first half.

Preview: Alabama at Ole Miss
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

Alabama coach Nick Saban proclaimed "the real season is really starting now," and the top-ranked Crimson Tide strive to avoid the upset when they visit SEC rival Ole Miss on Saturday. Alabama averaged 54 points while rolling to two easy nonconference victories, while the Rebels averaged 61.5 points in two wins, but a shaky defense allowed an average of 34.

The Crimson Tide began the season by clobbering Louisville and Arkansas State by an average of 43.5 points and now expect tougher tests. "We need to ramp it up a notch because competition is going to be much more difficult in terms of playing in our league," Saban said in a press conference. "We certainly have a big challenge opening SEC play on the road this week at Ole Miss." The Rebels rolled up 689 offensive yards in last Saturday's 76-41 victory over Southern Illinois but are aware it will be tougher to move the ball against the Alabama defense. "Their ability to put good player after good player out there consistently, it's impressive," Rebels coach Matt Luke said at a press conference. "They have good players, and they're well-coached. Impressive on both sides of the ball."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Alabama -21

ABOUT ALABAMA (2-0, 0-0 SEC): Sophomore Tua Tagovailoa has been superb in his first two college starts, as he has passed for 455 yards and six touchdowns without being intercepted. Receiver Jerry Jeudy (eight receptions, 151 yards) has recorded four touchdown catches while fellow sophomore wideout DeVonta Smith (seven catches, 176 yards) has a stellar 25.1 average per catch. Junior cornerback Saivion Smith had a 38-yard interception return for touchdown in last Saturday's win over Arkansas State after junior safety Shyheim Carter returned one for a score in the opener against Louisville.

ABOUT OLE MISS (2-0, 0-0): Senior quarterback Jordan Ta'amu established career highs of 448 yards and five touchdowns against Southern Illinois, and the yardage output was the third highest in school history. Junior-college transfer Scottie Phillips has been superb by averaging 10 yards per carry while racking up 311 yards and four touchdowns, while junior A.J. Brown has 15 receptions for 251 yards and three scores. Sophomore linebacker Mohamed Sanogo (team-best 16 tackles) is coming off a career-high 11-stop performance but pressuring the quarterback has been a problem with the Rebels notching just one sack.

EXTRA POINTS
1. Alabama rolled to a 66-3 victory over Ole Miss last season and holds a 49-11-2 edge in the all-time series.
2. Senior WR DaMarkus Lodge (concussion) is expected to be cleared from the protocol, but the decision of sophomore DE Tariqious Tisdale (concussion) may go down to game day.
3. Crimson Tide senior RB Damien Harris (2,310) needs 93 rushing yards to pass Eddie Lacy to move into 13th place in school history.

Preview: Arkansas State at Tulsa
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

Teams coming off tough losses last weekend look to rebound when Arkansas State visits Tulsa on Saturday. Tulsa played Texas tough on the road before falling 28-21, while the Red Wolves ran into the buzz saw that is No. 1 Alabama, losing 57-7.

Down by 21 points at halftime, the Golden Hurricane showed some fight, pulling within seven twice in the fourth quarter but couldn’t pull even or ahead against the Longhorns. Quarterback Luke Skipper led Philip Montgomery’s squad with 153 yards and a touchdown through the air, and should find the going a little easier against a Red Wolves' defense that allowed Alabama to throw for 321 yards and six scores and total 599 yards overall. Tulsa will also look to establish its ground attack, which has averaged 4.6 yards per rush and 231.5 yards per game, led by sophomore running back Shamari Brooks’ 195 yards and four touchdowns. Arkansas State was able to move the ball against Alabama, finishing with 391 yards of total offense as quarterback Justice Hansen finished 15-of-36 for 140 yards and a touchdown.

ABOUT ARKANSAS STATE (1-1): One positive that came out of the Alabama loss was the Red Wolves' ability to move the ball on the ground as Arkansas State finished with 173 yards on 31 carries. Senior running back Warren Wand led the way with 60 yards on 11 carries, while senior Armond Weh-Weh showed some explosiveness with a 40-yard scamper among his four carries for 45 yards. Hansen and the passing game is still the most dangerous part of the Red Wolves' offense, but coach Blake Anderson would like to see some balance and is starting to get that with the emergence of the ground attack.

ABOUT TULSA (1-1): Though the Golden Hurricane scored 21 points on Texas, Montgomery would have liked to have seen more from his offense, especially early. Tulsa didn't score until its 10th possession of the game, allowing Texas to build its 21-point lead and forcing the team to have to try to come from behind. More consistency is the name of the game going forward, especially in the red zone, where Tulsa had three empty trips in the first half that all ended in missed field goals.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Tulsa S McKinley Whitfield notched his 200th career tackle last week.

2. Arkansas State has recorded at least one sack in 26 consecutive games.

3. Tulsa had a streak of 16 straight games with a 100-yard rusher snapped against Texas.

PREDICTION: Arkansas State 31, Tulsa 24
