Preview: Kent State at Penn State
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

Penn State eased some concerns following an uneven home opener by thrashing a state rival on the road last week. The 10th-ranked Nittany Lions will try to give the home fans a better showing Saturday when they host Kent State in their final non-conference tune-up prior to Big Ten play.

After needing overtime to get past Appalachian State two weekends ago, Penn State overcame a slow start at Pittsburgh in primetime Saturday night to crush the Panthers 51-6. Trace McSorley threw for two touchdowns and ran for another for the Nittany Lions, who forced three turnovers and held Pitt to 55 yards passing. "I'm proud of how we played," coach James Franklin said at his weekly press conference. "I think we took a step in the right direction, cleaned up some things. Played aggressive. Played fast. Thought we really did well at the line of scrimmage, both the defensive line and offensive line." The Golden Flashes will be playing their second Big Ten opponent, having already lost at Illinois 31-24 after taking a 14-point lead into halftime.

TV: Noon ET, Fox Sports 1. LINE: Penn State -35

ABOUT KENT STATE (1-1): Sophomore quarterback Woody Barrett has three passing TDs and two rushing scores through the first two games while tossing three interceptions. He is one of three Golden Flashes with over 100 yards on the ground, including Justin Rankin (team-high 199) and Jo-El Shaw, who had 12 rushes for 105 yards and three TDs in last week's 54-14 win over Howard. Senior linebacker Matt Bahr had 11 tackles and forced a fumble in the victory as Kent State held the Bison to 270 total yards while forcing four turnovers.

ABOUT PENN STATE (2-0): McSorley lost some weapons from last year but he has a new one in redshirt freshman wide receiver KJ Hamler, who has three touchdowns - including one on a 32-yard run at Pitt - through the first two games. Junior Miles Sanders rushed for a career-high 118 yards against the Panthers while averaging 7.4 yards per carry. McSorley needs 12 rushing yards to become the second Nittany Lions quarterback with 1,000 for a career and he is 257 passing yards away from becoming the second to throw for 8,000.

EXTRA POINTS

1. McSorley threw for 209 yards and two scores and ran for 47 yards in a 33-13 win over Kent State in his first career start Sept. 3, 2016.

2. Rankin had 82 rushing yards in the 2016 loss at Penn State, which was a career high until he recorded 147 last week.

3. The Nittany Lions have won all five meetings by a combined margin of 144-29.

Preview: Georgia Tech at Pittsburgh
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

Teams coming off disappointing losses face off in their ACC opener when Pittsburgh hosts Georgia Tech on Saturday. The Panthers were outscored 44-0 over the final 30 1/2 minutes against in-state foe Penn State while the Yellow Jackets lost to South Florida - its fifth defeat since the start of the 2017 season after taking a double-digit lead during the course of a game.

Pitt had 14 penalties, three turnovers and three dropped holds (costing them 11 points) in the 51-6 defeat, while quarterback Kenny Pickett threw for just 55 yards and was sacked four times in front of 68,400 fans -- the second largest crowd in school history. "Our football team came out cranked up. They were ready to go, but we made too many mistakes and it doesn’t matter how ready you are to go," Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi told reporters this week. “We’re not going to measure anything after a game. One game, two games, three games, nothing’s measured like that. Every week, this is the most important game. Georgia Tech is the most important game now.” Despite scoring on its first three possessions of both halves and going over 600 total yards for the sixth time under 11th-year coach Paul Johnson, the Yellow Jackets were undone by two fourth-quarter turnovers and gave up three consecutive fourth-quarter scores in the 49-38 defeat. "It was just sickening” (to watch the game video)," Johnson told reporters earlier this week. “I don’t think confidence is a problem. It might be too much of it. It seems like every time we make a play, we want to celebrate. You’ve got to close out the games.”

TV: 12:30 p.m. ET, ACC Regional Sports Network. LINE: Georgia Tech -4.5.

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (1-1): The Yellow Jackets rushed for 419 yards - their second straight game with more than 400 - and passed for 183 more, amassing 602 yards in total offense and holding the ball for over 35 minutes. Quarterback TaQuon Marshall left the game early in the third quarter with a minor leg injury and finished with 113 yards rushing and a touchdown on 13 carries while completing 9-of-18 passes for 183 yards and one score. Jordan Mason, who got the majority of carries after starter KirVonte Benson went down with a knee injury, ran for 95 yards on 13 attempts and is averaging 7.5 yards per carry in two games.

ABOUT PITTSBURGH (1-1): The only bright spot on offense for the Panthers against the Nittany Lions was senior running back Qadree Ollison, who ran for 119 yards on 21 carries but was stonewalled in the second half. Pickett completed 9-of-18 passes in his third career start, but it was certainly a step back after his performance in an upset win over Miami in the 2017 finale and going 16-of-22 against Albany in the season-opening 33-7 victory. Senior linebacker Quintin Wirginis, who missed all of last season with an injury, had nine tackles, 2.5 for loss, and a sack against the Lions.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Pitt leads the all-time series 7-5, but Georgia Tech pulled out a 35-17 victory last season, shutting out the Panthers in the second half and holding them to 100 yards.

2. Georgia Tech has lost six straight games away from Bobby Dodd Stadium. It has not won away from home since a 33-18 win over Kentucky in the 2016 TaxSlayer Bowl on Dec. 31, 2016, and has not won a true road game since a 28-27 win at Georgia on Nov. 26, 2016.

3. Benson, who ran for 1,053 yards last season, injured his knee in the first half last week and will be lost for the season.

Preview: UC Davis at Stanford
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

Ninth-ranked Stanford will be without star running back Bryce Love for Saturday’s game against visiting UC Davis due to an undisclosed injury, but the Heisman Trophy candidate hopes to return in time for the team’s matchup Sept. 29 against Oregon. Senior Cameron Scarlett will start in place of Love against FCS-member UC Davis, which is 2-0 for the first time since 2004.

Love rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown, and safety Malik Antoine had two interceptions in last Saturday’s 17-3 win over USC as the Cardinal held the Trojans to their fewest point total in more than two decades. With Love sidelined for Saturday’s contest, the Cardinal may rely more on quarterback K.J. Costello, who has thrown five touchdowns and completed 63.8 percent of his passes in wins over San Diego State and USC. The Stanford offense may not be asked for much if the defense turns in a repeat performance from last week, when they tormented USC quarterback JT Daniels with four sacks and two interceptions. Before heading into back-to-back road games against Oregon and Notre Dame, the Cardinal need to be careful not to overlook a UC Davis team that scored 34 unanswered points in last Saturday’s 54-21 win over San Diego.

TV: 2 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network. LINE: None

ABOUT UC DAVIS (2-0): Redshirt freshman Ulonzo Gilliam ran for three TDs, and Jake Maier was 24-of-48 passing for 302 yards and a score in the win over San Diego, while Jared Harrell finished with six receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown. The Aggies are led by former Boise State and Colorado coach Dan Hawkins and boast a strong receiving group that includes senior Keelan Doss, an East Bay native who has a team-high 15 receptions through two games. Junior linebacker Nas Anesi helps direct a defense that held San Diego to 65 rushing yards last week.

ABOUT STANFORD (2-0): JJ Arcega-Whiteside has three TDs and 288 receiving yards through two games to spark the Cardinal, which figures to throw early and often against a UC Davis defense that allowed 365 and 296 yards through the air in its first two contests. “Coming off a very physical game against USC, it’s important that we don’t take our foot off the gas pedal,” coach David Shaw told reporters. Linebacker Joey Alfieri had two sacks against USC, and safety Ben Edwards added nine tackles to lead the defense, which has allowed a total of 13 points this season and has not given up a touchdown in the past seven quarters.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The teams are meeting for the first time since Aug. 30, 2014, when Stanford cruised to a 45-0 victory.

2. UC Davis scored 20 unanswered points in a stunning 20-17 win at Stanford in 2005.

3. Stanford is 25-5 under Shaw against in-state opponents.

Preview: Vanderbilt at Notre Dame
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

Notre Dame looks to make it three straight home wins to open the season as it hosts undefeated Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon. The eighth-ranked Fighting Irish are coming off an unconvincing 24-17 win over Ball State, while the Commodores are feeling confident after their 41-10 home win over Nevada last weekend.

The Irish were in the perfect position for a letdown game after their opening-weekend victory over Michigan and barely snuck away with the win against Ball State after being a 35-point favorite. "I obviously didn't do a good enough job getting them up to play at the level they need to play," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly told reporters after the game. Vanderbilt outscored Nevada 24-0 in the second half to pull away as quarterback Kyle Shurmur went 23-of-32 for 258 yards and two touchdowns. “I thought Shurmur did a great job all day long. He really directed traffic. That’s who he is. That’s what he does," Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason said after the game.

TV: 2:30 p.m. ET, NBC. LINE: Notre Dame -14.

ABOUT VANDERBILT (2-0): Shurmur seems to have developed a nice rapport with receiver Kalija Lipscomb, as the junior has 14 catches for 145 yards and three touchdowns so far this season. The Commodores like to keep things fresh in the backfield as four running backs have touched the ball at least 10 times this season, with junior Ke’Shawn Vaughn leading the way with 20 carries for 130 yards and two touchdowns. The defense has been stellar as well, giving up just 17 points through two games, including holding Nevada to 10 points last week after the Wolfpack put up 72 in their season opener.

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (2-0): In a game in which Notre Dame was expected to light up the scoreboard, it was a couple of defensive players that helped the Fighting Irish to a tight victory over the Cardinals. Junior safety Jalen Elliott had two interceptions to go along with seven tackles, while star linebacker Te'von Coney had 14 tackles, including three tackles for a loss, to bring his season total to 24. Quarterback Brandon Wimbush will need a bounce-back performance after going 17-of-31 for 297 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions last weekend.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Irish RB Tony Jones Jr. scored twice on only 13 carries (61 yards) against the Cardinals.

2. Notre Dame allowed Ball State to gain 349 offensive yards after holding Michigan to just 307 in the opener.

3. Vanderbilt has won eight in a row versus non-SEC teams.

Preview: BYU at Wisconsin
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

Sixth-ranked Wisconsin puts its lengthy non-conference home winning streak on the line when it faces BYU on Saturday. The Badgers thumped New Mexico 45-14 last weekend to extend that streak at Camp Randall to 42 in a row, and hope to improve to 3-0 for the third straight season by besting the Cougars for the third consecutive time following victories in 2013 (27-17) and 2017 (40-6).

"I think there's some good things that we can continue to find and that we'll continue to build on," Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst told reporters. "There's certainly things that we can look at and get better at in all phases." The Badgers have won 20 consecutive regular-season games dating back to 2016, with 16 victories coming by double digits during that span, and hope to wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule with another comfortable victory. BYU hopes to bounce back from its first loss of the season after dropping a 21-18 decision to California in Week 2. The Cougars have lost 11 of their last 15 games dating back to last season but look to knock off a Big Ten opponent on the road for the third time in the last four seasons, following wins against Nebraska (33-28) in 2015 and Michigan State (31-14) in 2016.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC. LINE: Wisconsin - 21.5.

ABOUT BYU (1-1): Tanner Mangum was limited to 196 yards on 22-of-41 passing with one touchdown and two interceptions in the loss to California. Running back Squally Canada was held to 49 yards on 16 carries against the Golden Bears after rushing for 98 yards and three touchdowns in the win against Arizona in the season opener. "Not good enough from anybody and it just wasn't one guy," BYU coach Kalani Sitake told reporters. "Everyone is being evaluated on this team at every position as our job as coaches is to make sure we have the right guys at the right positions to make plays and he's no different."

ABOUT WISCONSIN (2-0): Jonathan Taylor was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after racking up a career-high 253 rushing yards on 33 carries to go along with three touchdowns in the win over New Mexico. Alex Hornibrook completed 8-of-11 passes for 148 yards and a touchdowns against the Lobos to improve to 22-3 as a starting quarterback while defensive lineman Isaiahh Loudermilk made two tackles in his first game since undergoing knee surgery in the summer. Danny Davis is eligible to return after serving a two-game ban for his role in an alleged sexual assault involving his roommate and fellow wide receiver Quintez Cephus, who is suspended indefinitely.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Wisconsin is 87-10 at home since the start of the 2004 season.

2. Taylor has rushed for over 100 yards in 12 of his 16 career games.

3. BYU hasn't defeated a ranked opponent since 2015.

Preview: Duke at Baylor
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

Baylor is off to a 2-0 start and has already doubled its 2017 win total heading into Saturday afternoon's home game with Duke. But those two wins came against FCS program Abilene Christian (55-27), and Texas-San Antonio (37-20), a Group of Five opponent, which makes the contest with the Blue Devils a better barometer of just how much the Bears have really improved.

Duke is also off to an 2-0 start including an impressive 21-7 victory at Northwestern last week. A win over a Power Five Conference team like the Blue Devils, who whipped the Bears, 34-20, last year in Durham, would signal that it really is time to take Baylor seriously again in Big 12 Conference play. And the timing probably couldn't be better for Baylor to host the Blue Devils. With Hurricane Florence bearing down on North Carolina, Duke had to travel to Texas on Thursday morning and will be without three-year starting quarterback Daniel Jones who broke his collarbone in last week's win over the Wildcats.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1. LINE: Baylor -6.5

ABOUT DUKE (2-0): Redshirt junior Quentin Harris takes over for Jones who started 27 straight games and was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week after passing for 192 yards and three touchdowns before suffering the broken clavicle. Harris has seen action in 13 career games as a reserve, completing 9-of-15 passes for 85 yards and one TD while also rushing 39 times for 104 yards and two TDs. "He's a dual-threat guy -- he can run it, he can throw it," Baylor coach Matt Rhule told the Waco Tribune. "He's been their short-yardage, goal-line quarterback. It introduces a whole other element to us now."

ABOUT BAYLOR (2-0): Rhule said he will continue to alternate quarterbacks between sophomore Charlie Brewer, who completed 23-of-34 passes for 328 yards and three scores in the win at UTSA, and North Carolina State-transfer Jalan McClendon, who was 10 of 13 for 173 yards and two touchdowns in the opening win over Abilene Christian. "I think the competition has helped both quarterbacks," Rhule said. They're both having to push without pressing ... I think both players are playing at a high level, both players are trying to get better, both players bring something a little different." The Bears feature a pair of talented running backs in John Lovett (162 yards, 3 TDs) and JaMycal Hasty (109 yards, 3 TDs) and a strong receiving corps, led by Denzel Mims (11 catches, 213 yards, 1 TD) and Tennessee-transfer Jalen Hurd (12 catches, 194 yards, 2 TDs).

EXTRA POINTS

1. Duke is 21-3 (.875) in its last 24 contests against non-ACC opponents.

2. The Blue Devils have allowed a total of 21 points in their first two games against Army and Northwestern, marking the lowest combined total to open a season against FBS competition since 1971 when Duke held Florida and South Carolina to a combined 18 points.

3. Duke CB Mark Gilbert, a preseason all-ACC selection after intercepting six passes in 2017, underwent season-ending hip surgery Sunday a day after suffering an injury at Northwestern.

Preview: Boise State at Oklahoma State
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

No. 17 Boise State needs a marquee victory to aid its hope of landing in a New Year's Six bowl, and the opportunity is presented when it visits No. 19 Oklahoma State on Saturday in Stillwater. The contest figures to be a high-scoring affair as the Broncos have averaged 59 points in their two victories, while the Cowboys are clicking at 56.5 per game.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy is very concerned about a veteran Boise State team and is expecting a supreme test for his own squad. "This is, in my opinion, a very good year for them," Gundy said of the Broncos at a press conference. "They've got a lot of players back, the quarterback is experienced, mature and they're top 10 or so offensively and probably top 10 defensively. Hopefully we can play the very best that we can and we're going to need to play at a high level in order for us to give ourselves a chance to win." Broncos coach Bryan Harsin isn't buying into the national narrative that the matchup is crucial because it is Group of 5 (Boise State) versus Power 5 (Oklahoma State). "That’s not the way we think about it,” Harsin told reporters. “Our mentality is regardless of the logo they have on the side of their helmet, we’ve got to go figure out a way to play to the best of our ability."

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Oklahoma State -2.5

ABOUT BOISE STATE (2-0): Senior quarterback Brett Rypien is off a terrific start by passing for 667 yards and seven touchdowns without an interception and he helped the Broncos roll up a school-record 818 yards in last Saturday's 62-3 trouncing of Connecticut. "It felt amazing to see our offense click and to be out there having fun," junior running back Alexander Mattison (team-best 171 rushing yards) told reporters. "We pride ourselves on going out there and executing whether that’s in the run game or the passing game. We went out and were able to make some big plays which felt really good.” The defense is allowing an average of 13.5 points and will have senior defensive tackle David Moa (undisclosed injury) on the field for the first time this season.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA STATE (2-0): Senior quarterback Taylor Cornelius has passed for 728 yards in his two career starts and has six touchdown passes against three interceptions. "He has been here so long, and he wants to play as good of a game as he can, mentally," Gundy told reporters. "We run 80 plays a game. We play fast. Lots on the quarterback. There's going to be mistakes. He has a high level of really quiet confidence in my opinion." Sophomore linebacker Calvin Bundage has a team-best 14 tackles for a defense allowing 15 points per game, while redshirt freshman Devin Harper contributed a 24-yard interception return in last Saturday's 55-13 romp over South Alabama.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The teams are meeting for the first time, although Oklahoma State is slated to visit Boise State in 2021.

2. Cowboys freshman WR Tylan Wallace (team-best 14 catches for 214 yards) established career highs of 10 receptions and 166 yards versus South Alabama.

3. Rypien has 16 career 300-yard passing performances, tying Kellen Moore (2008-11) for most in school history.

Preview: South Florida at Illinois
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

South Florida looks to avoid a letdown after a huge victory last week and get another big performance from new quarterback Blake Barnett when it meets Illinois in a battle of unbeatens Saturday at Soldier Field in Chicago. Barnett, who started the opener for Alabama in 2016, has registered 629 yards of total offense in the first two games after the Bulls defeated Georgia Tech 49-38 last Saturday in the first of their two matchups against Power 5 teams.

“The thing about Blake is, I think he wants to prove that he can really play,” USF head coach Charlie Strong told reporters. “You think about it, three years ago he was the No. 1 quarterback (coming out of high school). Then he goes to Alabama, and he goes to Arizona State and he kind of disappears. … He can throw the ball, and if he needs to move the chains with his feet, he can do that, too.” Strong called Saturday’s contest a trap game after such an emotional come-from-behind win and the Bulls will face an Illinois team that has been ravaged by injuries and suspensions, despite posting two wins. Senior quarterback AJ Bush (hamstring) is questionable after leaving last Saturday’s win over Western Illinois while two of the team’s top receivers - Mike Dudek and Edwin Carter - have been lost for the season with knee injuries, and head coach Lovie Smith said it’s simply next man up. “I have learned we have not played a full game yet.” Smith told reporters. “Hopefully this week we will peak at the right time, starting off right away. … I think everything we want to be as a football team, we have seen signs of but need to be able to put that together.”

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network. LINE: USF -10

ABOUT SOUTH FLORIDA (2-0): Barnett threw for 202 yards with two touchdowns and ran for 91 with another two scores last week for a Bulls squad that is averaging 470.5 yards in the first two games. Freshman running back Duran Bell Jr., who rushed for 69 yards in his collegiate debut last Saturday, is day-to-day with an ankle injury and the Bulls' run defense must improve after giving up 611 total yards in the early going. USF has three players with at least 114 receiving yards and a TD in the first two games, including senior Tyre McCants (16 catches, 130 yards), freshman Randall St. Felix (10, 166) and junior Darnell Salomon (six, 114).

ABOUT ILLINOIS (2-0): The Illini can start a season 3-0 for the first time since 2011, but may have to replace Bush (18-for-30, 223 yards passing and 142 rushing) with freshman M.J. Rivers II (9-for-16, 105 yards passing, two TD passes). Senior receiver Sam Mays (eight catches, 89 yards) is still around while sophomore Ricky Smalling (leg), who had 70 yards on three catches in the opener against Kent State, could return after missing the last game. Illinois will have to be better against the pass this week after two rough outings, but hopes to continue its strong work on the ground where Bush, junior Reggie Corbin (25 carries, 142 yards, three TDs) and sophomore Mike Epstein (16, 138, one) have prospered.

EXTRA POINTS

1. South Florida freshman WR Terrence Horne ran two kickoffs back for scores last week and caught a touchdown pass.

2. Illinois junior DB Cam Watkins must sit out the first half of Saturday’s game due to a targeting penalty last week.

3. The Bulls recorded 680 yards of offense last season in a 47-23 victory over the Illinois in Tampa after both teams started 2-0.

Preview: LSU at Auburn
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

After high-profile season-opening wins followed by lopsided tune-ups, seventh-ranked host Auburn and No. 13 LSU square off Saturday in the SEC opener for both teams. Auburn is aiming for its 14th consecutive home victory dating to 2016.

Both teams opened the season with impressive triumphs over ranked opponents, as Auburn beat Washington 21-16 in Atlanta in a matchup of top-10 teams while LSU posted a 33-17 neutral-site win over Miami. Now the stakes are raised for two teams hoping to challenge top-ranked Alabama for the SEC West crown. “This game is always a factor in the SEC West,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said during the SEC coaches teleconference. “I would not be surprised if it’s another one.” Auburn has won 13 consecutive home games dating to 2016, and the home team has won 16 of the last 18 meetings in the series.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS. LINE: Auburn -10

ABOUT LSU (2-0): The Tigers’ offense has been impressive and relatively balanced thus far, as Nick Brossette is averaging 131 rushing yards per game and quarterback Joe Burrow has been steady, passing for 145.5 yards per contest with two touchdowns and no interceptions. LSU’s defense has been even more dominant, though, forcing five turnovers while registering 16 tackles for loss and nine sacks in its two games. The Tigers gave up only 254 total yards in last week’s 31-0 rout of Southeastern Louisiana.

ABOUT AUBURN (2-0): The Tigers have rolled up nearly 1,000 yards of total offense through two games, and it has come from numerous sources. JaTarvious Whitlow (150 yards, touchdown), Shaun Shivers (124, one), and Kam Martin (120, one) all have been effective while running the ball, and Jarrett Stidham has passed for 386 yards and two touchdowns while utilizing 11 different receivers. Auburn’s defense has been wreaking havoc in the backfield, averaging 4.5 sacks and nine tackles for loss after limiting Alabama State to 205 total yards in last week’s 63-9 victory.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Auburn has allowed only three first-quarter touchdowns in its last 21 games.

2. LSU is one of six teams in the nation that has not yet committed a turnover, as it has played 15 quarters without a giveaway dating to last season.

3. Auburn kickers have converted an SEC record-tying 234 consecutive extra-point attempts dating to 2013, the longest active streak in the FBS.

Preview: Miami (Ohio) at Minnesota
Gracenote
Sep 12, 2018

Minnesota will try to improve to 3-0 for the third straight season Saturday against visiting Miami (Ohio), but it will have to do so without one of the program's key cogs. Running back Rodney Smith, who is 41 yards shy of becoming the seventh player in school history with 3,000 rushing yards, will miss the rest of the season due a knee injury suffered in last week's 21-14 win over Fresno State.

"I am devastated for Rodney, but I know he will keep his oar in the water and continue to move forward and attack his rehabilitation process," coach P.J. Fleck said in a statement. "He is a leader on this team and I look forward to him working with our young players as we continue to grow this season." The loss could put a little more on the shoulders of true freshman quarterback Zack Annexstad, who threw for 395 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions through the first two games. The Golden Gophers will be playing their third straight home game to begin the year but they play three of their first four Big Ten contests on the road, beginning Sept. 22 at Maryland. Coming off their seventh straight losing season, the RedHawks have stumbled twice to begin the year and were blanked 21-0 by in-state rival Cincinnati last Saturday.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, Big Ten Network. LINE: Minnesota -13

ABOUT MIAMI-OHIO (0-2): Gus Ragland threw for 357 yards and three touchdowns in a season-opening 35-28 loss to Marshall, but the senior was stifled by the Bearcats (139 yards, one interception). James Gardner has been the top target with 11 catches for a team-high 142 yards but he has yet to find the end zone after doing so 11 times in 2017. The senior needs 109 more receiving yards to become the ninth player in program history with 2,000.

ABOUT MINNESOTA (2-0): Freshman Bryce Williams ran for 87 yards after Smith was injured last week and will get the first crack at carrying the load, although redshirt freshman Mohamed Ibrahim is expected to be in the mix this week after missing the Fresno State game with a knee issue. Senior Shannon Brooks, who has 1,728 rushing yards in his career, could make a return from an injury of his own due to a new redshirt rule that allows players to appear in up to four games without losing a year of eligibility. "There's a strategy," Fleck told reporters of Brooks, who is taking part in non-contact drills. "We might have to play him sooner, but I highly doubt it. … We have a plan, and I'll keep that plan to ourselves, but he'll play four games by the end of the year."

EXTRA POINTS

1. Minnesota WR Seth Green ran for two TDs in each of the first two games.

2. Miami entered the week ranked 124th among FBS teams with 73 rushing yards per game.

3. The Gophers have won the first three meetings, including a pair of six-point victories in 2007 and 2011.
