Padres vs. Dodgers Preview and Predictions

by Gracenote on 08/25/2018

The Los Angeles Dodgers took out their frustrations from a three-game sweep on the San Diego Padres in their series opener and continue the three-game set against their visiting National League West rivals on Saturday. Los Angeles, which began its six-game homestand with three losses to St. Louis, scored in all but two innings of Friday's 11-1 rout to climb within 3 1/2 games of division-leading Arizona.

Justin Turner and Max Muncy belted two-run homers while Chris Taylor also went deep for the Dodgers, who have scored at least 11 runs while allowing just one in each of their last three victories. Turner also singled in the triumph, giving him 10 multi-hit performances in his last 16 contests. San Diego registered only four hits Friday as it suffered its third consecutive loss after beginning its six-game road trip with a win. Three of the Padres' hits went for extra bases, with Freddy Galvis recording two - a triple and an RBI double in the eighth inning to prevent a shutout loss.

TV: 9:10 p.m. ET, FS San Diego, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Brett Kennedy (0-2, 8.36 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (6-5, 2.40)

Kennedy remains in search of his first career victory as he makes his fourth start in the major leagues. The 24-year-old native of New Jersey was battered for 11 runs and 20 hits, including four homers, over nine innings in his first two turns - both of which were losses. Kennedy settled for a no-decision in his last outing as he gave up two runs on six hits and three walks in five frames versus Arizona on Sunday.

Kershaw has won three consecutive decisions and allowed fewer than three earned runs in each of his last six starts, including a victory at Seattle on Sunday in which he gave up one run and four hits over seven innings. The 30-year-old Texan has gone three straight turns without serving up a homer and has issued just one walk over 21 frames in that stretch. Kershaw improved to 18-6 with four complete games, one shutout and a 1.89 ERA in 33 career starts against the Padres by permitting two hits over six scoreless innings at San Diego on July 9.

WALK-OFFS

1. Padres 3B Wil Myers (facial injuries) went 0-for-4 on Friday after being kept out of the starting lineup for two games.

2. Los Angeles activated Yimi Garcia (forearm), who allowed a run and two hits in one inning on Friday, and placed fellow RHP Daniel Hudson (forearm) on the 10-day disabled list.

3. San Diego sent RHP Luis Perdomo (shoulder) to Triple-A El Paso on Friday to begin a rehab assignment.

PREDICTION: Dodgers 8, Padres 0

I'm playing the home underdog Los Angeles Rams tonight as my Bonus Play against the Houston Texans.

When I first saw this number, I wondered if the Rams were sitting their starters rather than play them in the traditional dress rehearsal week. But, most starters appear slated to play in the game against the Texans. Most, except Todd Gurley

Meanwhile, Houston coach Bill O'Brien said this week every healthy player will play against the Rams.

And there's the reason for the line.

But that doesn't scare me.

Not when the Rams have most of their defensive starters set to go. It’s probably reasonable to expect the starters to play a few series today. And the Rams defenders have made it clear they're coming after the Texans to record three-and-outs, and get off the field. They're not looking to allow Houston extended series, and have enough talent to make things difficult on the Texans.

I'll play the home team here, as the Rams eke out the win.

My Bonus Play is an underdog longshot, as I love the Kansas City Royals against the Cleveland Indians.

Yes Corey Kluber is chasing his 17th victory of the season, but no, I am not concerned and am not scared to take the huge underdog at Kauffman Stadium tonight.

The Indians come into the contest with a 12-game lead over the Twins in the American League Central, and one thing that has concerned me with the Tribe is how lax the team is getting at times. Complacency has no place in baseball, but the Indians have lost three in a row, and could be overlooking a Royals team that has nothing to lose.

The Royals won Friday's contest 5-4, as Wily Peralta picked up his first win of the season.

Salvador Perez has 41 runs and 64 RBIs for the Royals this year, and Ryan O'Hearn's bat has come alive with five home runs and nine RBIs while slugging .818 over his past 10 games for Kansas City.

I'll take a shot with the home pup here, after all, this is a freebie. My real play is in college football.

My Bonus Play for Saturday night has to be on the Toronto Blue Jays, a home underdog versus the Philadelphia Phillies. I'm not listing pitchers, either, as it won't be necessary.

After a dominant performance by Thomas Pannone, Ryan Tepera and Joe Biagini on Wednesday, when they combined on a two-hitter in a 6-0 win over Baltimore, the Jays had Thursday night off to prepare for a tough series with Philadelphia.

The Blue Jays responded well, and took last night's series-opener, 4-2.

Philadelphia is struggling terribly right now, having lost 10 of 15. Over their last 11 games, the Phillies' staff has a sky-high ERA of more than 5 and the team has been outscored by 28 runs.

This is a good spot for the Jays to keep their four-game win streak going, and potentially extend it to six with a series sweep. Take the home pup.

White Sox vs. Tigers

My Bonus Play is on the Det Tigers 6:10 ET.

Detroit beat Chicago 7-2 on Thursday but after holding the White Sox scoreless through the first seven innings last night, saw Chicago put up six runs on six hits and a walk in a six-run eighth. Chicago's 6-3 victory evened the four-fame series between a pair of two teams going nowhere. The White Sox are 49-79 and the Tigers 53-76, meaning both teams have been looking ahead to 2019 for quite some time now.

Lucas Giolito (9-9, 6.08 ERA) goes for Chicago, seeking to become a 10-game winner (he had just three wins in 13 career appearances to open the2018 season). He steps to the mound having won back-to-back starts, beating Detroit and Minnesota his last two outings. He held both opponents to three runs over six innings while producing a total of 13 strikeouts against three walks. The 24-year-old gave up five runs in each of his first two matchups with the Tigers this year and has a 4.88 ERA in four career meetings. Detroit lefty Ryan Carpenter (1-1, 6.00 ERA) will oppose Giolito. Carpenter picked up his first career win (7-5) after limiting the Twins to three runs over 5 1/3 innings this past Saturday. All three runs came on solo HRs. He will be facing the White Sox for the first time.

The White Sox have won three of the last four meetings between these Central division rivals but the Tigers were able to win nine of 10 contests to begin the season series. Giolito has a 6.88 ERA in three starts against Detroit this season and I'll take the home team, here.

Good luck...Larry

Yankees vs. Orioles Over 9

The Yanks and Orioles clash on Saturday in Game 2 of a day-night doubleheader and the Over here has value.

Two struggling pitchers take the hill and we should see plenty of run-scoring chances.

Looking at the Yankees first, Sonny Gray gets the ball and he has been horrific this year. Gray has bounced from the rotation to the bullpen on numerous occasions because of his struggles.

On the other side of it, Andrew Cashner counters and he has been equally as bad. Going just 4-11 this season, Cashner owns a 4.42 ERA against the Yankees this season.

Some trends to note. Over is 27-4-1 in the last 32 meetings. Over is 12-3-1 in the last 16 meetings in Baltimore.

Expect plenty of traffic on the bases here.

Back the Over.

Good Luck, Razor Ray.

Event: (293) HAWAII at (294) COLORADO STATE
Sport/League: CFB
Date/Time: August 25, 2018 7PM EDT
Play: Total Under 58.0 (-108)

Lots of what I consider to be meaningful info to share here, with the result being a strong opinion. First, we have a Hawaii entry that is going back to the run and shoot offense. I think this could be effective for them down the road. But it's a precision scheme that figures to have some rough spots early. I would expect the Hawaii offense to have trouble sustaining drives in this game. Colorado State also appears to be lacking on the offensive side. They lost some legit talent at the skill positions. Something I consider key is that in an intrasquad scrimmage the CSU defense shut out the offense. That rarely happens in those deals, and I think it's a key point in this analysis. No way to handicap short fields off turnovers or special teams scores. But in terms of the offense vs. defense matchup here on both sides, I see the two defenses with decided advantages as I don't like either attract. I'm seeing this O/U inflated from where it ought to be and I will go with Hawaii-CSU to stay Under the number.
