Unfortunately. And we have thousands of people sitting around that do nothing but make come up with new laws. Have to justify their salaries and look like they are doing some good with their salaried positions. Soon it will be illegal to eat high fat food, yell at your kids, and wear tie dye

It's really not that hard to stay out of jail

Yes, that pretty much eliminates the repeat offender problem...I've vote for chopping off both hands & feet, but just hands seems to work well...

Its all because of our ridiculous drug laws, really.

Im pulling these figures out of my ass but i'd guess somewhere between 50-70% of all inmates are there because of nonviolent drug offences.

Good to know we will let the murderers and rapists out on early parole because the prisons are overcrowded and we need to make room for more nonviolent drug offenders.

Our shitty prison system does nothing to 'rehabilitate' anyone, it just turns those people who were not really criminals before they got there into criminals because of the enviornment they are forced to live in.

i thought I read somewhere about how the feds were considering releasing a large percentage of the non-violent drug offenders..

problem is.. a high percentage will be right back.. the treatment programs some prisons institute saves taxpayers a fortune..

problem is with money.. if inmates are there for a one minute of the day, the state is still payed for their stay (county jail)
one outta ten posters is a stretch I'd think
but I'll regretfully add myself to that number

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

They won't be back if you release them and eliminate the ridiculous drug laws.

The whole system is a giant welfare program for law enforcement, from the cops, to the prison staff, to the courts, to the ATF, the DEA, Customs, and the list goes on and on. Let's not forget the intersts that build prisons, and the onee thatoperate the private ones, or the companies that operate the BS halfway houses.

Trust me when I say that most of these people are unemployable if the the whole charade was shut down tomorrow.

Not sure what the per capita of Attorneys in the US is, but I'm sure it's pretty high. US with the highest incarceration rate + high per capita of attorneys = coincidence, I think not?

It's a shame we can't find jobs for the amount we as taxpayers spend to house one prisoner. I've read it costs anywhere from $35-50k per year! I'm sure if a con was making $50k he wouldn't resort to crime.

The high incarceration rate is all about the "System" and its economics (as stated above, courts, federal/state agencies, bureaucrats, etc). America needs to wake up or you too or someone you know will be in the slammer for something relatively petty.

lawyers keep people outta jails, Criminal Defense attorneys make up a very small margin of employable attorneys

and if we got rid of the MMS it wouldn't curb the drug problem.. put more addicts back on the street and they commit more crimes..
Drug related offenses are the reason for the staggering number of inmates..

The US of A is a sick country. That's why the terrorist's hate This country! They see the double standard(s) in all aspects of life. Especially the drug one (DOUBLE STANDARDS--Legal companies even constantly their battles with so called "scientific" evidence. ) It's a laugh if you can bear it to do so!
They see a poor person executed for "murder". They see a wealthly person "walk". This is the GREAT Legal system (of by and for) in the constitution. Justice for the Rich-if you think that equals Justice for the Poor--You are an idiot!
Greatest Nation on earth till you break it down peace by peace. Than it's tricky. But basically comes to ONE SINGLE fact: "He who has the GOLD makes the rule". Included in that they OWN anyone else!
God Bless The USA.

Agree.
What is wrong with putting criminals in prison?

Well, from what I can gather, the hatred on this site is mostly about the drug laws, which are without a doubt pretty ridiculous. But the law is the law, and I fail to sympathize with people who just had to use crack, heroine or whatever. I think the income tax is a silly way to tax, but I'm not going to stop paying taxes, and if I did, I wouldn't expect people to feel there was a great injustice when I'm put in jail. The nation was founded on a representative democracy, and when our elected officials pass laws within the bounds of their authority (as determined by the constitution and the courts), we should be bound to follow them. If we don't, the social contract is over.

Though I think the onus is on the individual to stay out of prison, I do think this study shows we have significant problems in our society.

Let's start with the great LEGAL drug called ALCOHOL.
How many people were killed in the USA as a result of taking that as oppesed to how many People were killed taking MARAJUANA?
If you don't think Anheiser-Busch and all their buddies don't want to see weed legal; you are not from planet EARTH?
They have a good thing. No competition do they wish to have. Add all the Kentucky, etc. whiskey makers and All the States which make Wine for sale.
This is not Rocket science!

What's your point? You still follow the law. If you break the law, it's your fault.

What does this have anything to do with being a Republican or Democrat? If you disagree with a law, you object to it through legitimate channels. Are you an anarchist?
