Who did it better? Millionaire room full of experts or arm chair GM armed with just a note pad, memory and couple cans of Copenhagen. Breakdown of My Detroit vs Their Draft.
I pick 3 teams each year to draft for. This year 4 because I took SF and LAR since they had no picks except a ton of low rounds. Be fun seeing what you can dig up on garbage picks and one team good vs other team horrible.
It’s hard because you lock on to certain guys which may not make it possible in real life. if you do x what y and z do then. But I stay true and draft as players are available. It’s cool because sometimes you reach for a guy you see would have been there RD 4 instead of 2 lol. Shit is kind of tricky not knowing who will be there later when targeting players. It’s kinda weird not knowing, you get a trigger finger and sometimes you are way too early. Sometimes guys you like keep sliding and it’s beneficial. Plus it’s tricky because all the trading up and back you have no control of. Not too mention paying attention to 4 teams not 1 you get very little time unlike just one team.
Lions Draft.....
12 Van Ness DE Iowa 6’5 275 4.5 40
(Lions took Gibbs RB)
A 3 5 7 technique guy Versatility with a bull rush. Young but Raw. Kills two birds one stone. Getting inside help but a 3 down inside rush or outside rush. Just see too much Versatility and great partner for Hutchinson. I’d considered him at 6 tbh. Defense can really get creative with him. Gives help inside vs run and inside rush. Also gives wide rush and pass help. Not JJ Watt but same Versatility aspect. Just bit raw but freaky traits to mature.
18 Campbell LB Iowa 6’5 250. 4.6 40
(Lions took Campbell)
I was in the minority. I’d done the same pick. I’m way higher on Campbell than probably anyone. #9 overall player. Based off I just see a 8 year high quality pro bowl player. Shades of Luke Kuechely. I know Projection was mid RD 2. And passing would have been tempting to trade back up RD 1. May not be there may not find a dance partner. Drafted the player Over need at LB.
34 Mingo WR Ole Miss 6’2. 220. 4.4 40
(Lions took Laporte TE)
I can’t pass up what I think is the best all around WR in the draft. Deebo meets Brown just jet sweep, bubble, slot him or send him deep. Too good of a weapon to pass on. If ya can’t stop em on defense then out score em. This was a tuff pick. Lions should have taken Arizona 33 not 34. I’d probably gone Levis off the value. Or traded just as Arizona did. Passing on Mingo meant I’d target AT Perry RD 3-4.
45 Mauch OT N Dakota 6’5. 302. 5.0 40
(Lions took Branch DB)
Screams a lion. Versatility can play anywhere even center if need be. Great Guard piece. Can’t have too many hogs. Plug n play guard yet a great piece swing fill n play guy if needed off the bench. O line is loaded but injuries or they do have a guard wants big $ next year. Future piece also. Who doesn’t like nasty tuff blue collar guys. With no front teeth either! It was Mauch or Martin S/CB Illinois
68 Washington TE Georgia 6’7. 260. 4.6. 40
(Lions took Hooker QB)
Huge TE that is a 6th Offense lineman. Bit stiff but fast as fuck for 6’7 and has good hands. For team big on running it’s a great Two TE set piece or single in line guy. Good red zone threat also. It was hard passing on Sanders LB Arkansas. Such a freak athlete.
96 Ika DT Baylor. 6’3. 355. 5.4. 40
(Lions Took Martin DT)
huge two down Samoan Beef eater run stuffer! Eats up blocks and allows backers to free up. Has good little pash rush and motor. You gotta take the big fella off the field for oxygen though. But have we not seen what these agile massive samoans do? Sign me up fuck it!
152 Jones S/CB Texas AM 6’3 200 4.5 40
(Lions took Sordsal C William Mary)
No idea why he fell maybe injury. Had him rd 2-3 grade with Martin from Illinois. More versatility can play slot and has outside CB experience. Playing more in box safety last year. Super fast and big dude. Bit wreckless but can cover the slot and his size can matchup well with the bigger slot TE guys. Was tuff passing up several guys but wanted depth pieces on D and secondary wasn’t used yet
219 Trice CB/S. 6’3. 200. 4.5. 40
(Lions took Green WR UNC)
Had to add another secondary piece. Some good options at OL Broeker and Hayes good Detroit fits imo. CB Valentine and QB Duggan were tuff to pass up. I’d probably gone Duggan if had better feel of the team secondary. Maybe they have pieces they like and don’t need depth. Duggan been fun due to running abilities and screams a Dan Campbell type guy.
End of the day I walked away with big big dudes. And fast big dudes. Wasn’t a fan of Lions Draft. They shouldn’t have traded 81 instead two 150’s to Arizona. Should have made them pay a premium from 12 to 6 after that haul from Texas. It’s obvious they were dying to get Johnson ahead of Raiders or Bears etc.
For shits n giggles this is the other 3 teams I did. Lots of crossover same guys. Some way earlier than originally drafted)
