Go for it!

Slaves used to escape from both sides swimming it-- I've heard infrequent rumors of some modern-day illegals doing it, but they must have easier ways for sure-- unless if they're really, really vulnerable to the law...

Here's some snippets on annual triathlon, mile swim...--- http://www.3disciplines.com/index.php?option=com_events&task=view_detail&agid=12&year=2006&month=06&day=25&Itemid=0

As far as being toxic-- when it started getting bad years ago, they did something about it. Here's pertinent snippet from that url:

"Detroit River Stigma - We have answered consistant emails on the subject. The fact is you will be hard pressed to find a cleaner and more clear triathlon swim than this one. It is not in the shipping lanes, this is the clean waters between Belle Isle and Detroit. A 15 yr. old mile swim is held in this location and is regarded as one of the clearest swims in the state. Besides if it were un-safe do you really think we would let you swim in there, let alone what the state or coast guard says. Not to mention you start and finish at the beach on the island. See you Sunday morning."

So at worst, depending on the exact point, you'll have to make sure and dodge any vessel, maybe its waste, the CG, police boats: read here

but if you wish to totally avoid Homeland Security....

Are you or is this with that poker player who always does these kinds of prop bets?

Is this the guy that hit the golf ball a mile ? Not out of an airplane, off a mountain... but on a frozen lake.

I think it was a mile, the ball goes a hell of a long way on ice ! That was the catch that won the bet.

You will get arrested

1. I would not want to be in that river - lots of pollution, but not sure it is toxic.

2. If you don't get arrested you will certainly get stopped and lose your bet. Take your passport. They say you can come back to the US with just a license, but the last time I tried (In a car) I was hassled for 3 hours about whether or not I knew what happened on 9/11 and why I did not have a passport with me. I now carry it everywhere in my computer bag... If (And they will) border patrol sees you swimming, you can bet they will stop you. I'd take it -200 they arrest you too. There is probably some rule against entering the U.S. at non guarded points.

3. NOw if there is no rule in the bet that you can not talk to border patrol first, I know of no laws preventing you from swimming, so if you clear it with them first, you could make it.

And leave the implants in after the year ended because you've grown to love them?

Drinking 10 beers in 30 minutes is not an easy task in any way shape or form. I would like to see some of you do it at the bash. I remember trying the ole 12 beers in 2 hours in high school and although my tolerence was much less, it was rarely accomplished by me or any of my friends. Not even close to as easy at it sounds.

Yeah read the fine print carefully. He may have alerted all the proper officials a known terrorists will be trying to sneak in the country at the precise time you are making the swim, LOL. Make sure you have the "no action" clause in there for things out of your control.

10 beers in 30 minutes? Is that a joke? My drinking buddies would bet the opposite, no way they could put 10 beers in front of me and they last a full half hour.

Might do a few wings too if they are available.

That's not true. In college I once won a $50 bet to pound 6 beers in five minutes. The 10 beers in 30 minutes has nothing to do with tolerance, it's all about whether you can fit that much into your stomach, since you won't even be drunk at the end of the 30 minutes unless you're a real lightweight.

Very strong currents and cold water.

You won't die as someone will rescue you. Go for it...... Many have probably already attempted it for a much smaller amount.

your fucking crazy and stupid if you do it. Im not saying that you cant because the distance is relatively short but the Detroit River is as disgusting as any river in the Midwest. Back in 2005, I remember reading in the Detroit News newspaper about raw sewage being discharged into the Detroit River and that it has turned Lake Erie into a big cesspool. Not also is human waste in there but even workers who "clean" the river every year say its like grabbing a handful of crisco because of "FOG"...which stands for Fat, Oily, Grease from resturant drains.

Dont do it....

Are there any predators residing in that water that could ingest you along the way?

For all you beer drinkers that think they really can drink those ten beers in 30 minutes, I've got a bet for you.

I'll bet you you can't finish a 6 pack drinking one shot glass full of beer every minute. In other words, when ever a minute passes you must take one shot of beer. Any takers?

Bottom line is you won't be able to finish the 6 pack without throwing up! Try it some time.

Can not use any floatation devices such as tubes, life jackets/vests, rafts, water wings, etc. May wear a wet suit and flip flop shoes on the feet, but no ther snorkeling gear.

The wet suit is important to you. It will ADD buoyancy as well as conserve your energy by keeping you warmer. Get the right wet suit and you'll practically float.
