You're right. Much more inspiring to our kids to hide down in the dark basement doing our secret little habits.

Amigo, the fact that we as adults do an activity does not deliver a message to our kids that it's okay for them to do it.

There are many things that adults do that are inappropriate for kids to do.

Do you also hide in the basement when you use the drugs alcohol, tobacco (if you use that) or other rx pharmaceuticals? If not, why not? Why would you openly acknowledge use of some drugs, but in the case of cannabis feel you need to hide in the dark basement to avoid detection?

Do you tell your kids that you and their mother never have sex for fear that your kids might think, "It's okay to have sex"?

barman you certainly are passionate about this issue. I don't think I've ever seen a pot thread go by without you in there fighting for "the cause". I only want to make one point, but I feel I should cover my bases first. I certainly have smoked weed over the years, but not for about 10 years or so. Just don't have the desire to, no other real reason. I have one child, an 18 year old daughter. I don't think she's smoked any pot...though I'm not 100% sure. If she hasn't yet, I realize she probably will at least try it someday.

Do I think it's more harmful than the other things you always refer to as drugs? Do I think it should be legal or not? Don't know and don't really care. My only point is that you always lump it in with alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceuticals...and that's fine for alot of your arguements. But like it or not (and I know you don't) as we speak marijuana is an illegal substance while those others are not. That is a big difference that you can't deny.

the argument between Barman and harrington is sort of a macro vs micro one. (politics vs family)

Of course I agree with Barman, he is trying to teach people about how to protect our fundamental freedoms, but Harrington is not looking at this from a political point of view, but rather a family point of view.

I think in a way both are right, but I lean more towards Barman's position, if you want your freedom's you have to fight for them, even when times are tough. Otherwise before you know it they will be gone, and you will be kicking yourself.

Of course you dont want your kids to smoke weed, but at the same time you want to teach them about what is important, how to protect one's freedoms, especially now, given the way policy in the USA is shifting too.

What is that saying about people who think they are free are actually the most imprisoned? something like that

S And I know for a fact that he has never tried pot.

Sure.

Of course he hasn't tried pot, because there's no way he could try it without you knowing it.

Thanks for the feedback PBR, but I think we both know that no one in North America who wants to use cannabis ever gives much thought to it's legal status save for being careful while driving the product from source to home.

It's pretty much a non-issue and utterly irrelevant to whether it's a good idea to use it in the privacy of your own basement....heh

One can be a total abstainer from cannabis use and still agree that it's rather absurd to feel that those who do use it should covertly hide their use from high school age kids and/or college age adult offspring.

True enough. Hard drugs like alcohol can be far more debiliating physically and mentally. One should exercise extra care before electing to use them.

Harrington, are there many tim horton's in buffalo now?

They are popping up like hot cakes all over the WNY area....there was a slew of them when I left the Buffalo area roughly ten years ago.....They even have their own website which allows one to order it and have it shipped (as I have done plenty of times):103631605

FYI, My brother in law is around 52. Known him as a very good friend way before he married my sister. Works for Miller Brewery and very involved in HS sports as an official. ALL the time for 25 years he was getting hi before work, before sports, but never was a guy who went overboard with anything. Always smoked doobs. Not a big drinker at all.

3 Years ago he had some issues and found out that he had some very dark lungs. Never smoked cigarretes. Doctor told him if he wanted to stay living he would have to quit. Regularly goes in for check ups and is much better. Said its the best thing he ever did.

To each his own IMO. Did my share in the day just not for me anymore.

i don't smoke weed, though i have at times to have some fun in my lifetime. I'm have nothing against it. I may choose to partake in moderation here and there.

I can tell you this having lived with an everyday (night) weed smoker for a year... it 100% absolutely affects memory. Countless times, again and again, we will be watching tv when a rerun comes on and she has absolutley ZERO recollection of ANY of it. It's truely a shame because she loses memory of things from just weeks before. I use TV shows as my example because TV shows are just an easy measuring stick where I often find myself saying "WTF?!?!?". This same disabilty affects other areas of our lives and it's just a huge pain in the ass whenever it arises. It's no fun getting into an argument about things that are lost forever in damaged memory. Sitting thru a rerun of "Dateline", "20/20" or "SNL" that we just watched last month is something I've learned to deal with on occassion. It's the other parts of a life forgotten where things start to get tricky. Not cool man.

She's either greatly overusing and/or she's got some other cognitive problems.

It's been fairly demonstrated that short-term recall can be handicapped for 20-30 minutes after a strong toke session. But to forget what happened "yesterday" or "last week" is indicative of something far more serious.

I'll also suggest that you might review and make sure she's not using some other drug(s) that could be further depressing her central nervous system to the point where she is literally shutting out direct visual and audial stimulus.

Well barman, those examples you listed are all legal to use. Regardless of your feelings on whether pot should be legal or not, right now it is illegal in this country.
