Buy the $500 one if you are just using it for the internet and not some complex programs. Make sure you get 4gb of memory if you are using vista. I am using a Best Buy laptop I paid $550 for before christmas and it only has 1gb and it is ok but I have order 4gb online and it will be some much smoother when it gets here. If buying from Best Buy tell them you just want the computer no othjer crap like anti virus or geek sqaud protection plan. It is way over priced and you dont need a $300 warranty on a $500 computer. If it break go buy another one.

Why do people say this? I assume that you buy a new computer every few years and that each computer is better than the one you owned before it. Of course it is going to be better than your Apple II

Well said,

It seems like most of the people here that ask questions or make comments are clueless about computers, you just turn on your laptop and it runs smooth and fast you think it's a great buy.

Buy a new car and it will run without any problems also, it's the quality that counts at the end.

I can format your old computer, adjust some settings, disable unnecessary programs and it will run 10x better than it ran before.

It works great for posting online, betting and playing poker. I will probably buiy a new laptop within 2 years anyway.

No matter what, DO NOT purchase an extended warranty. Some places will charge you $250 for a 2 year warranty and a new laptop will cost maybe around $400 in a few years

PO69's point is valid. If you don't use any kind of specialized software, don't play mainstream 3D games, and mainly use the computer for Web browsing/betting/playing poker, most of the hardware specs of a new laptop are pretty much irrelevant. Any new computer is complete overkill for your needs.

Go with the screen size/screen resolution ratio and overall weight that you're comfortable with. To me, the screen is the most important thing, colors in particular. Make sure that the whites are white, and not yellowish or greenish or whatever. Laptop of all prices can have a fucked-up white balance that's impossible to fix completely.

If you're really using your laptop everywhere, you also need to budget for the largest capacity battery, which might cost $100+. (or a fraction of that if you buy the generic version off an eBay power seller)

if your not gonna being using 3d intensive programs, get a 5-600 dollar laptop and that will suit your needs perfectly.
Best buy has the acer extenza on sale now and you will not find a better deal.
Aesthetics are glossy black laptop, 2 gigs mem, dual core cpu,dvd burner, webcam, etc.
All coming in at a whopping 499 dollars +tax.
I would look into that.

If your in chicago and want a simple laptop, i have an acer aspire 3680 for 320 bucks i could sell to ya, month old

Avoid Acer like the plague-everything they make is PURE SHIT.

Take a look at some of the Sony Vaio's on CDW & let me know what you think. They are a little pricey, but the displays on them are awesome. I'm on my second one & have loved them both.

Your asking for advice but you still haven't told us what your use of the laptop will be?

Anyway, I would goto HP.com and see what they have, then call them direct and wheel and deal them. You will get a much better deal calling direct.

For 95% of posters any laptop is fine

there is little difference between a $700 laptop and a $2,000 one.

I just called Best Buy about a laptop that has 1GB of memory (RAM). The specs said that it is expandable to 2GB....so I called and asked how much extra it would be to have them expand it to 2GB....they told me about $100.

Here is the question: Is 1GB enough or is it worth paying the $100 to get the extra GB?

How would my life change if I had 2GB instead of 1GB or RAM?

For $100, go with 2gb. If you end up with Vista, I'm not even sure that's enough.

I bought a new Fujitsu A6030 at the ass end of December 2007. I have 2 GB of RAM and Vista and it runs well for anything I use it for: web surfing, Excel, Word, playing movies, etc.
