had under 65 1/2 dogs and Kobayashi at plus 140. Reluctantly take a split.

New rule change this year: ten minute event instead of twelve. They probably could have gotten close to 70 under the old rules.

This is one of the reasons the world hates us. Their daily meal is a plate of dust and we're seeing who can eat the most hot dogs in the shortest time.

Vote for the stupidest post of the day (only because Doc Mercer
is banned).

The IFCE which sponsors this event is an international federation
with members and affiliates all over the world.

Besides, if one's daily meal is a plate of dust, I doubt you're
watching this on ESPN.

Anyone who is familiar with 5dimes would've known they never were going to honor that wager. Technically they should have but its understandable they didn't. Surprised to hear a book apparently did honor a total which was obviously booked for a 12 minute contest.

BTW - Nice call on Fresno St. in the CWS OMT. Never really believed in that team, bet against them a few times throughout their run. Obviously didn't get a good read like you and a few others did.

Believe they weren't the only book that offered the total in the 65+ range as some seem to be oblivious to the fact that the contest time had been changed from 12 minutes to 10 minutes. Pretty poor bookmaking IMHO.

It was a pussy move by 5D, they added "must go 12 mins" - then cancelled all of them, taken before AND after the change.

Why the fuck did they change it, why not cancel it then? Because they were taking a shot on all the smart under bettors.

Clearly the people who bet it before they added the 12 min requirement should have been honored.

Weak bullshit move, figures they are not a sponsor here, so Wil can't even give em a hard time about it.

I think he would. Clearly they thought the 12 mins was relevant because they ADDED it to the ticket notes after taking a lot of wagers. They didn't cancel the pre-existing wagers at that time!

Only after they had taken action with and without the note did they probably see where they were, and cancelled.

Obviously they thought it important to add the stipulation, and they screwed up by not having it. But all of the conditions of my ticket were satisifed (kobayashi or chestnut in), and they didn't pay. I think Wil would make the phone call.

Just to back this up:

my ticket was placed nearly a month ago, before the change was official:

Wager details

Wager Type: Money Line
Wager Status: Pending
Risk / To Win Amount: 125.00 / 100.00 (USD) Accepted 6/11/2008 11:28 AM - EST

Sport / Period: Other Events Misc. / Game
Line:
Nathan's winner eats under 68½ hot dogs 7/4/2008 12:00:01 PM - (EST)
-125
Opponent: Nathan's winner eats over 68½ hot dogs
* Game Notes:
Chestnut or Kobayashi must participate for action

And they cancel it TODAY, long after they added the 12 min requirement a week ago or so. Bullshit move, imo.

They were just waiting to see if the contest was going to stay 12 or change to 10. Once 10 was confirmed then they canceled. If it had remained 12 then they wouldn't have canceled.

Still doesn't answer the question as to where Royalfan got Under 65.5 and was the bet honored. Would appreciate an answer on that one.

Well, it makes no sense to add it then cancel all the tickets placed BEFORE they added it....That's like adding a requirement to a baseball prop (pitcher must go 3 innings!) and then cancel the ones accepted before that requirement...

People here would go ballistic against the book if that happened, but on this no one cares....

First of all I hope other than this unfortunate cancellation this holiday has been safe and fun for you and yours.

Regarding hot dog eating contests in general, I really do not know much about the minutiae of these events (I hate to call it a sport). 5Dimes sometimes because of the sheer massive size of their wagering menu seems to do this kind of thing on occasion but from my experience always with good reason. IMO they remain a fine book, despite this incident.

Just the fact they added a new rule after the fact tells me whoever handicapped the event for them was not real comfortable with his analysis. My guess is it became apparent that even with the 12 minute rule - 68.5 hot dogs was a bad number (to high).

Normally I would say let me call them for you but I know if they cancelled for everyone they are not going to just pay one single winner as a favor to me, fairness factor.

Even though 5Dimes did not renew their contract I can still call them but in this case, it would be like asking them to reverse a class action decision that someone made when they cancelled all action on the event, not going to happen.

I am sorry this happened to you. You should at least email them and get their explanation as to why the wager was cancelled. Perhaps if enough individual players complain they may reverse themselves and pay the winners but unfortunately charge the losers which would cause another controversy.

Best of luck, wil.

Here's an analogy that, while maybe not the best, may give you a different perspective:

Two boxers White and Smith are fighting in a title fight on Saturday. I place my bet on under 11.5 rounds since a title fight goes 12 and White has some knockout power.

Rumors circulate that Smith may not make weight and will be stripped of the title. When the weigh-in comes Friday afternoon, Smith does not make weight and the fight is shortened to a 10-round non-title fight.

My under 11.5 rounds bet is cancelled by the book.

5dimes put this line up many months ago. Everyone assumed that it was going to be for 12 minutes and was a good line. As rumors swirled that the competition would be shortened to 10 minutes, sharp bettors and/or shot takers pounded the under knowing it would be nearly impossible to go over 68.5 dogs with 2 less minutes.

I haven't followed the hot dog/competitive eating circuit closely so I do not know when exactly they officially announced it would be 10 not 12 minutes.

The only thing I would have done differently is cancelled the bets much sooner and tried to notify bettors the reason why, if possible.
