The Big Ten has a 10 year $1 billion dollar with ABC/ESPN and a 25 year deal with News Corp. which is projected to be worth $2.8 billion (The payout with News Corp. is based on an equity distribution so the money per year depends on profitability). The ABC deal is escalating so on average each school will be paid $9 million a year over the life of the deal (through 2016 i believe but last years payout was probably closer to $8 million). The Big Ten Network will pay out an average of $10.18 million per year per school over the life of the deal though last year the distribution was $6 million per school.

So, last year each Big Ten school received $14 million and Notre Dame received $9 million (their deal with NBC)

CU hasnt had baseball for 30 years (same for gymnastics, swimming and wrestling). Should we blame the Big 8 for that?

I find it hard to see how schools cant make a profit unless they suck at spending money. Smaller schools may have to do more work to increase their bottom line but with TV, Radio and Advertising, not to mention ticket and merchandise sales, there should be plenty of money to go around. And when you're the only game in town (which is the case for many colleges) and not fighting for attention from other interests, it should be even easier.

If these college sports programs came out and showed they made millions and millions (which many do), people would raise holy hell trying to get their share. How can state colleges continue to raise tuition yet the sports programs rake in 10 million a year profit?
You can blame the Big 8 and the Big 12-2. This conference never improved the smaller revenue (mainly North) schools by expanding. The CU Athletic Department has already gone on record saying they aren't making a profit, and for all practical purposes are broke.. You can call it bad money management or whatever. But in CU's case, the reason they dropped baseball, wrestling etc. is because their fanbase wouldn't support those sports under the Big 8 or the Big 12-2.. And their football team certainly wasn't going to pick up the pieces. There's only one reason why CU left the Big 12. And that's money. They saw their chance to get out of the red and join the Pac-10. And they took it.

CU has the unfortunate disadvantage of competing with Denver sports (Broncos, Nuggets, etc). Tough for them. Maybe it'll be better in the Pac12

Which actually means waiting for TCU to join next year so they can claim some of the DFW market and hoping they continue to dominate.

The Big 12 (Beebe) should have been proactive and never let TCU get away. I know TCU wouldn't have been a new market team for the conference. But it would have been a nice addition. And it would have left us with just one more team to add to the conference. More doable than what we have now.

yeah pretty much means they're waiting until they can get one team that sheds a bit of national spotlight on the conference. unfortunately with all the other bcs conference signing big deals i'd have to think there's only so much $$ to go around
