The family of a New Hampshire mom who died from flu complications says she opted not to take medication over concerns about its possible side effects.

Amanda Franks, 38, of New Ipswich, was offered a prescription for Tamiflu, an anti-viral drug, when she was diagnosed with the flu two weeks ago, news station WMUR reported.

The mom of four, however, reportedly decided against the treatment after a doctor informed her of the potential side effects.

“She said they prescribed her Tamiflu, but the doctor said the side effects were a lot of times worse than the flu, so she decided not to take it,” her sister, Jolene King, told the New Hampshire Union Leader.

The next day, she passed out in her bathroom and was rushed to an emergency room.

Doctors told her that she likely became unconscious due to a high fever, and sent her home with anti-nausea medication, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader.

But two days later, she returned to the same hospital where they determined she was suffering from septic shock, a complication of the flu.

She died in an ambulance en route to another hospital, Lebanon’s Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, according to her family.

“On the way driving up to Lebanon her heart had stopped and they weren’t able to revive her,” King said.

A GoFundMe page was created to raise money for her funeral expenses.

The family of an Indiana teen who committed suicide says his flu medication may be the reason.

Charlie Harp, who lived in Franklin Township, was diagnosed with the flu Thursday and prescribed the antiviral drug Tamiflu, news station WXIN reported.

Shocked, the couple said they searched for answers on what drove the teen to take his life.

Prior to his death, he was excelling at school, where he was involved with the wrestling team, and “happy all the time,” according to his aunt.

“He’s been the same,” Brad Ray told WXIN. “What did we do differently? And it clicked, he just started new medicine.”

The teen was only on the medication for less than 24 hours, but his family said the adverse effects of the drug may have played a role.

“He had a total of two doses,” his aunt said. “Two doses and this is where we are.”

The family is urging others to closely monitor their children’s behavior while taking the drug.

“The thought of someone else not knowing and give it to their children, I can’t bear that,” his aunt said.

Schools in at least 12 states close to fight against the flu

DALLAS -- Schools across the country are fighting the flu, classroom by classroom. On Monday, Bishop Lynch High School resumed classes after it closed last week to let work crews disinfect the entire school property.

School nurse Patty Barton saw more kids in the clinic than in the classroom.

"This year it really is unprecedented," she said. "I probably saw about 30 kids here on Monday and sent 10 home."

The flu is widespread throughout the country and there are 39 states the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says have especially high activity. With so many students and teachers getting sick, schools in at least 12 states have cancelled classes for a few days for cleanup and recovery.

The flu shut down classes Monday for the 815 students at Saint Thomas Aquinas in Dallas. More than 10 percent of the student body got sick.

"Even if we miss anything, the kids will have a chance to go home, get healthy and hopefully not bring that virus back to school," said Matthew Vereecke, the school's superintendent.

"It has been a tough influenza season so far this year," said Dr. Daniel Jernigan of the CDC.

He says the H3N2 strain of the flu is hitting patients over 65 very hard, but other strains of the flu are taking a toll on younger patients.

"Since the winter holidays, we've seen kids are really making up the predominant amount of influenza," said Jernigan. "They're taking that back to school, getting transmitted there. I think that's really what's driving a lot these visits to the outpatient clinic."

I thought the flu shot is supposed to keep you from getting others sick, but it doesn't keep you from getting the flu, or something like that.

Be sure to get a flu shot next year if you didn't get one since Sept/Oct 2017. I get one every year and (knock on wood) was only sick with the flu (very mild) one year about 5 years ago. My doctor suggest strongly getting the shot!

never get a flu shot...../except once.....and I got the flu. Never had it since and that was 40 years ago.
