Whistler Blackcomb where your american dollar will go farther. As a nice bonus you can hit Mt Baker on your way to and from.

if you stay at Harrahs or Harveys or Caesars palace, you can walk to the Heavenly Ski Lift.

My top few:
1. Jackson Hole, WY: look here for the most diverse terrain, length of runs and excellent personal instruction that doesn't necessitate a mortgage. Jackson has become alot more expensive over the last 6 years, but the whole experience of the Tetons, the Tram, the Moose bar at the base, the Cowboy bar in town and Wyoming hospitality make this a world class hill.
2. Alta, UT has some of the best chutes, wild terrain and the Iron Horse Grill: best ski resort food you will find.
3. As Strut said, Brianhead has some of the best powder at a decent price, and lodging is much cheaper than at most serious ski areas around.
4. I'm anti-snow board (cause they wreck my damn moguls), but Brighton is probably one of the most board-friendly in the country. It's also an incredible place for early morning POWDER from hell!
5. Winter Park/Mary Jane, CO is one of my all-time favorites. You get the huge terrain, runs for any level of experience, and faster/shorter lines than most anywhere in Colorado.

If you want a seriously diverse ski trip though, try a week in Salt Lake City. You can be at any of 15 ski resorts within 45 minutes or so. Most hotels in SLC have shuttles that will get you in and out quick.

How bad are you at skiing?
I would recommend you practice alot at your local hill first since ticket and instruction will be super cheap. It would be a waste of money to go to big ski area like vail or the canyon and spend $60+ on lift ticket.

Angelle.. I like Winter Park in CO. I think ya might get more value for your $$ there. It's been a few years since I've been, though, so things may have changed..

If you don't mind getting bent over at the ticket window, Vail is the ONLY place to go.

Jackson Hole is way too hardcore for you, and the Utah "powder holes" are probably more than you are ready for.

Vail rules.....period.

Lady, Winter park is a good place for newbies.

I lived in CO for 4 years and had a Colorado pass for 3 years. My favorite place by far was Vail. The slopes are wide open and they have many wide open gradual slopes for the beginners. Vail is also a great place to shop and party Angelle, but you probably don't do either

What ever you decide hope you have a great SAFE trip.
