I applied to several of those ACC schools back in 1982, and the average scores today look about 100-150 points higher then in 1982. Is it because they dumbed down the test or kids are better educated?. I hope it is because kids are better educated, but me thinks that's wishful thinking.

It's because the kids 'prep' for the test and often retake it... hell, we didn't prep and damn sure didn't retake the thing.

Frog... get one of those tutorial programs and have him give it another shot since he's a jr.

Yes and yes. They didn't dumb down the test, but they did re-center the scores. If you got a 1200 in 1982, that might be a 1270 in 2004.

Also, more kids are studying for the SATs, taking SAT classes, etc. However, some experts argue that this is offset by more "low-average" kids taking the SATs. More minorities, poor kids and flat-out dumb kids. In 1982, some of these kids didn't even consider college (so they didn't bother to take the SAT). But these days, taking the SAT is almost automatic for high-school students.

How about the ACT? Thats the test I took and I think its pretty much surpassed the SAT in stature now. I personally only got 25, was VERY fortunate to even get into U of I with that, considering everyone i knew got 28 or higher!

What is an ACT? Sorry I am so ignorant on this subject, but with all my kids, I am eager to learn. Have the universities moved to this ACT also? Do they use both? Should you take both? Sorry about being a dumass on this subject...Best Wishes...OF

Something else to consider that I haven't seen mentioned. Consider sending him to a junior college for his freshman and sophomore years. Depending on what he is planning on majoring in, there are some fine schools in your area that have programs specifically designed to transfer directly to the University of California school system as a junior and he will be as fully prepared as those that went directly to the university as freshmen. You'll save in cost, keep him close to home, and allow him to mature for a couple of years to be better prepared once he reaches the university. Trust me on this one, I speak from personal experience on this route. Consider. Best wishes.

OMT, that is the plan at this point. First two years in minors, transferrable to UC system. Not only do I agree with you 100%, so does my son. That is the plan, at this juncture...Thanks Ted...OF

Make certain that the program he is studying is directly transferable to the UC system. For instance, as an example, he seems to be capable in math, so something like engineering might be of interest. If he just studies general education, his ability to transfer will be limited. This year, UC had so many applicants that those they could not take directly were offered direct transfer in two years if they went to a junior college. Just to be clear, I am not referring to the Cal State University system for two years, but the junior college system, like City College of San Francisco, City College of San Mateo, Diablo Valley Junior College, etc. Hope this helps.

As far as i know the ACT, which is a competitor test to the SAT and just as widley or maybe even more, accepted everywhere.

Have him take this test as well, as you can submit whichever score is better of the two tests.

Yes, very clear, he is already looking at the local JC's, finding out credit transferring constraints. This part we seem to be on top of, that and the scholarships. Just going through this is building his character and maturing him. Without him being motivated to stay the course, no pun intended, this is a waste of time. He is doing all of this on his own. He has proven himself to me. It is my turn to step up. That is why I asked. Best Wishes TED...OF
