Thanks for the suggestions. Looking into the Costa Mesa/Irvine area. Seems to be centrally located to everything and off the water which means cheaper prices. Also having SNA right there is very convenient for someone who will be frequent visiting Vegas.

I lived in Irvine for a year and half. Make sure you live far enough away from SNA or you will be wakened by the jets taking off promptly at 7am. You can set your clock by it.

Nice college town central to LA County or SD County like you said. Nice clean city and the safest in the country for its size. Rent for a 1-bedroom apartment will be anywhere from $1500-$1800 per month. Expect lots of Asian and Indian students as your nieghbors. If you want a house in Irvine you're looking at $2500/mo.

Costa Mesa is cheaper but older and not as clean or safe. Make sure you know where the gang areas are before renting.

Don't count out flying out of Long Beach. You can get a nice JetBlue flight for less than $200 and it's just a 20 minute drive on the 405 the whole way (if you drive outside of rush hour). SNA will be a bit more expensive just because it's OC. Long Beach airport is easy-in, easy-out and close to the freeway. JetBlue has the tv screens and it's an up-and-down 1 hour flight to Vegas. I've flown it many times.

Burbank,Glendale Pasadena area is what I recommend.. About 25 mins to the beach but you will be living in a decent neighborhood and the rent isn't too bad at all..

I should have been more specific Re: Costa Mesa....If you'r searching Craigslist or what not, type 'Eastside CM'. There are some decent areas NW of the 55 but also some shitholes.

The area bordered by the 55 fwy, 73 fwy, 17th St.& the back bay is best and has easy access to all of Newport/Balboa night life.

And yes...Irvine is not cheap even though it's farther inland. I got priced out 2 years ago when my 700 SF 1 bedroom went to $1,650/Mo. Granted, it was a resort style complex but still....

Huntington is full of older but recently remodeled Apt. complexes but most are just off of super busy streets (Beach Blvd, etc.)

This is a frustrating apartment search. I find something decent on Craigslist and it's a scam. I find what appears to be a decent complex on ApartmentGuide and the reviews on ApartmentRatings say it's a dump.

I know I'm saving money technically because my tuition will be $15,000 less, but geez. Everything is $900+ for a studio and $1400+ for 2BR. Weather is beautiful though.

If you are looking for an apartment in Irvine, check out www.rentalliving.com

It's the website for the Irvine Company (they pretty much developed almost all of Orange County) and they have the nicest apartment complexes in the county. The rent will be higher but the amenities and overall quality are top of the line.

And you are correct about being close to John Wayne Airport (SNA). Irvine is about a 5-10 drive and you cannot beat that airport. Makes LAX look like Hell on Earth.

Just fly here, live out of a hotel room for a few days then drive around the neighborhood you want to live in.. You'll find something easier that.. All this tireless searching on the net will break your will and you'll be in the 909 before you realize what hit you @)

Saw that company. Rent starts at $1250 for a 1BR. Pass. Thought it was funny how a complex was named "Las Palmas".

You want to gain residency but want to live on the beach you are going to pay 1k or more.

Ca. is a big ass state you can live in Barstow for a year and pay 300 a month.

It's only for a year.

But of course no babes and bars but it's only a year.

And of course Barstow is a stretch.

I don't understand your statements here. Rent starts at $1250 for a one bedroom. Is that too expensive for you? Why are you passing on this?

Why would you think it was funny if a complex is named "Las Palmas". It means "the palms" of course. Palm trees are all over Southern California.

I would stay away from Irvine for the simple fact that IAC would most likely be your landlord.

$1,250 1BR is cheap anywhere within 20 miles of the Pacific.

Q....I think he thought Las Palmas was ironic b/c of the book.

Agree with ET...Narrow your search online maybe, but come out for a long weekend to see shit in person.

Barstow is closer to Vegas! :103631605
