Dodger, I don't know what it's like to have a family and bills to pay but, maybe I can help you out,. I got two credit cards and charged them to the max and my parents tried to warn me about my gambling addiction needless to say, I got in BIG trouble for a college student chaarged them both up to the max lost both two years ago and since paid most of it down. I was placing between 5-10 $50-100 bets every Saturday and Sunday during NFL season then I found NBA NHL and boxing as well needless to say it will be difficult but, even I at age 23 faced the fact that my gambling was getting worse I went to GA and I cut back to 1-2 bets a day andf I "allow" myself x amount to gamble each football season/NHL/NBA and I don't go beyond that no matter how good the game looks. I felt a big "void" like others have said but, I got myself a job and tightnened up financhialy even started reading more books and focusing more on school/work back then work/school was secondary to my gambling I was obsessed and out of control Good luck with your recoverey sorry for rambling remember everyday is a new day and you are in control of your actions also, when I got email phoner calls mail etc just tell them you joined GA you may have to repeat it to them but, they will stop calling after awhile

i am, thanks mods everday is a battle to keep under control but one day at a time you also won't lick this overnight it will take awhile like months or for some years but, you can gamble and not be addicted just as a suggestion for a new forum you could have a gambling problem forum for those who may need help and to educate the younger gambler at how dangerous it can get so they don't have to learn a the har5d way..

Never commit suicide because that is what evilness wants you to do.
Have faith in God and know that this world is only temporary. You must
find a meaning about your life in this world. You have not reached
that point yet. Read some Billy Graham and start a new fulfilling life!!!
Why worry about gambling??? Are you going to gamble in say 50 years when you have passed on from this crazy world?? The answer is most
likely not. Be the best you can be! Take care and do good things for
yourself and the people in this world around you.

Didn't bother to read through all of the replies, so I'm sure this advice was given more than once....

Sit down with the wife NOW!!!! and be TOTALLY honest about everything. The more you try to hide, the longer you try to hide it, the worse it will get. Fessing up the truth in this situation is brutal...trust me, I know. However, it is WITHOUT A DOUBT the best option. If you truly are as sincere as you seem to be, and if your wife is even somewhat understanding, things will work out.

Right now, you probably can't fathom the thought of explaining to your wife what just happened. Remember this!! The talk you have with your wife will be rock bottom, then things will go up from there. As much as you want to avoid opening up and telling the truth to those who need to know, it's something that HAS to be done, and it is something that WILL begin the healing process.

Good Luck!! Keep your head up.....Things are never truly as bad as they seem, ESPECIALLY if you're willing to be honest with yourself and with those you love!

in my recoverey I did four steps that helped me cut back and worried less about gambling
1. I kept the material that GA gave me and kept the coin/pokerchip they gave me in my pocket whever I went when I got the urge to gamble pulled it out and put the cell phone and chip bnack in pocket
2. Go out with friends to places where sports will not likely be present movie theater friends house family trip etc you will be amazed at if you can't gamble how good you will feel after awhile.
3. avoid being by yourself and avoid carrying a cell phone if possible or carry minimal if you don't have the means to bet it will be a less of a temptation
4. block all sports channels/ gambling sites/ cancel all sports related magazines/subscriptions for a few months again less tempting to check odds

You are stuck. And If I were you I would start another checking account while you still can. Life needs a checking account. They will close your current account for deposit only if you cooperate and agree to pay. However it would be smart to get another account at another bank that you can pay bills with while you still can. Good Luck!

GA is great for the truly out of control gambling addict. I can't knock it as a last resort. However, I dare say that it is a good idea for anyone picking up bad gambling habits and going through a horrid losing streak also.

In the latter case, I can personally attest to from my experience quite a few years ago that attending several meetings will show you if you are a true degenerate beyond any help except GA, or whether you simply need to retool, change catastrophic gambling habits and negative thinking and actions. You may realize that you are not one of these unfortunate souls who lack any semblance of willpower. You will hear story after story of exactly what not to do and what pitfalls to avoid. You may be able to salvage a hobby you love.

You may realize that this is a necessary program for hopeless losers and find out that you really are not one of them afterall. Worked wonders for me. I've been far more cautious with my bankroll and for the most part been successful ever since. If nothing else it taught me to grind rather than to go for the big score.

Dodgerfan, IMHO the first thing you need to do is make the decision to STOP gambling right now until you have things under control (probably at least a few months).

Once you have honestly made this decision within yourself, I guarantee you will feel at least some weight lifted from your shoulders, AND your wife will likely give you another chance if you can convince her that you have sincerely committed to at least try to stop gambling and get your life under control.

Good luck, Bro.
