I haven't been to Tahoe/Reno since NYE 2012/13. I went for 14 straight years. Love the place. I heard they had a dry winter on the ski slopes, which is a shame. I prefer the North Shore of Tahoe, but the South Shore has the bigger casinos and better nightlife.

I've always stayed inside the casinos when I'm in Reno, so it's never been too bad. Circus, Silver Legacy, and El Dorado are all connected (or they used to be), so that's convenient.

Reno is a great town as far as access to outdoor activities.....but the downtown has fallen apart. There used to be a ton of casinos there, now the downtown is all rundown and boarded up.

What if I wanted to spend 50/50 time on the lake and at the casinos? Should I rent a place on the lake and drive to the casinos in the evening? Or stay at a casino and drive to the lake?

thanks!

Grand Sierra has remodeled their property. They have a nice new sports book that's pretty classy, a new night club that features an indoor pool in the night club. Plus they got stuff for kids there, like go carts, miniature golf, bungee drop.

Peppermill and Atlantis are still my favorite though, they both have great health spas for the wife, and Peppermill still has the nicest sports book in town. Tahoe is beautiful and great during the summer, lots of stuff to do at the lake like parasailing, ect. The gambling sucks there though for black jack: 6/5. If you want to play blackjack you should stay in Reno, Tahoe's only a half hour drive if you want to go to the lake. Peppermill has a nightclub called "Edge" which is pretty happening on the weekends. I never really go down town just don't care for the atmosphere, unless there's an event going on.

You should check out Virginia City while you are here too. During the gold rush Virginia City was once home to the most millionaires per capita in US. All the old mansions are still standing, some cool museums visit, and the town still looks lik the old west.

If you're coming in August book early because, the "Hot August Night's" event is going on, and people come from all over the world with their classic cars and everyone sells out.

My top choices would be,

1. Peppermill
2. Atlantis
3. Grand Sierra

If you want to stay down town I'd go with, Silver Legacy or Eldorado.

Downtown isn't as bad as it used to be, after 2006 many casinos down town went under, but most have reopened. One of them reopened with no gambling at all, and the building is now for rock climbing on the side of the building, if you're in to rock climbing.

Montbleu in Tahoe has good entertainment, bands like the Beach Boys, and Comedians like Daniel Tosh.

We did have a very dry winter, but if you are going for the skiing many of the casinos in Reno have free shuttles that will take you to and from the lifts.

Peppermill, it was remodeled a few years back to accommodate the WPT. It's pretty classy too.

Gambling isnt a huge deal in S Lake Tahoe, but there is plenty there to fill up a few nights. No need to drive to Reno ( I like Reno fine). Tahoe is great. do some outdoors things, hiking, boating, the heavenly ski lift is open year round I believe, go up just for the view from there in the summer is more than worth the price

Also eat the buffet at Harrahs at least one. They did something there no casino would do now, wasted prime top floor VIP type space on the low rollers that eat buffets. the buffet is on the top floor and has a tremendous view, try to get a window table

Also, take a drive around the lake. takes hours, but relaxing and fun.

Yeah I can't tell you much about the gambling in Tahoe, when I go up there it's all outdoor activities for me and I have small children. If you do stay in Reno, The Stonehouse is a great restaurant with an impressive menu, I had filet mignon eggs benedict there last time I was there, it's near Peppermill they do breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Down town, Pegg's Glorious Ham and Egg's is great for breakfast, but always a long line, that's where I had breakfast with Ron Paul in 07'.

I used to like to play BJ at Lakeside Inn, which is a very small "locals" casino in South Lake Tahoe. I was played there every day for a week and never lost, but never won big. My total for the week was around $1500. When I was about to leave one of my last days there the pit boss called me over and said something along the lines of, "We can't let you play Blackjack here anymore. You can play any of our other games, but not blackjack. If we see you playing blackjack we'll have you banned from the casino and possibly arrested." I was like "WTF did I do?" He said - very sarcastically, "You're too good." He said it like they knew I was cheating or something. I never could figure out what their problem was, but I haven't played there since. It was a great place to play back then; single deck and 3/2 blackjack.

I definitely wouldn't make the drive back to Reno just to gamble. I would usually fly into Reno and stay the 1st night there to gamble...then go to the lake to snowboard/ski and do some gambling at Crystal Bay Casino....then stay 1 night in Reno to gamble before flying out.

On the south shore there are 5 decent casinos and sports books....3 of them are pretty big (Harrah's, Monte Blue, Horizon). The casinos on the north shore are really small. They all have sports books, so that's a good thing. I prefer the north shore because there are more ski resorts. I've never been to Tahoe in the summer though.....

Lake Tahoe is beutiful place to visit. Harrah's is the nicest Casino in Tahoe with their upper floor Suites nothing short of awesome. Show some $$ at check in and ask if they have any upgrades available. Then dine at their top floor Friday's Steak House and you will be blown away ! Have fun !

+1 on Fridays Steak and Seafood. Make a reservation thugh. We tried to go one night, 90 min wait, so we just made a resv for the next night.

I went 2 years ago for the 3rd time with the wife for the first time.
We stayed at a bed and breakfast little spot near one of Heavenly's lifts.
Tahoe is so great, but I've only been there during the winter snowboard.

I'll second Peppermill in Reno...we stayed there one night, and it was pretty nice.
Reno is like an hour away, and we always rent a car. You got to have a car.

If you go to Reno, don't even think about staying anywhere but the Peppermill. It has an independent Sportsbook, great Restuarants, very generous comps and fantastic atmosphere throughout. Did I mention the Pool ? When I drive from Las Vegas to Portland, Oregon, I always stay at the Peppermill and they have always comped my room and sent me Bonus Play and meal credits.

I've stayed at El Dorado and Silver Legacy. Both places were great.

To each his own. Try the Peppermill and then compare. Silver Legacy is newer than most and I've stayed there. Peppermill for me !

I've stayed at them all. After Grand Sierra got their new sports book, Peppermill put in a new Jumbo tron HD screen. I asked the sports book director if they did that to compete with them even though they already had a better book. He told me they don't compete with Reno casinos, they compete with Vegas. Silver Legacy is nice, and when there's an event downtown they're the place to be, but Peppermill is in a class of their own here. I highly recommend them.

Looking yet again to try to get to Reno/Tahoe this June. Does the above advice still apply?

Thanks!
