Regarding Bod Gibson as great as he was, his best years were easily in the 1960s. He had an excellent year in 1970 going 23-7 and a good year in 1972 going 19-11 the rest of the 70s were:

1971 16-13
1973 12-10
1974 11-13
1975 3-10 (retired after his last start on September 3rd 1975.)

The great Juan Marichal was a star in the 60's but not in the 70s (similar to but even worse than Bod Gibson) his record in the 1970's was 53 wins and 55 losses. He retired on April 16th 1975.

Seems like some solid people in here. Why does the pitcher with two all-star games to his credit think he deserves the HOF over Schilling or Morris? Shows that career stats can be overrated.

Bert, you are not a HOF'er.

<header>Yankees should give Sparky Lyle his day in the sun

The Yankees mean well enough. But the problem with handing out plaques in Monument Park is that there’s always somebody else out there waiting in line who may deserve one just as much.
Take for example the case of Goose Gossage and Sparky Lyle. Gossage will be receiving his plaque on June 22. He’s certainly a worthy recipient. Goose pitched seven seasons for the Yankees, appeared in 319 games, went 42-28 with 151 saves and a 2.14 ERA. He was part of two pennant winners and one championship.
But the Yanks have nothing planned for Lyle, who also pitched seven seasons in New York, appeared in 420 games, went 57-40 with 141 saves and a 2.41 ERA. He was part of three pennant winners and two championships. He was a Cy Young winner with the Yanks and also performed one of the great relief jobs of all time, shutting down the Kansas City Royals in Game 4 of the 1977 ALCS on two hits over the final 5.1 innings, with the Yankees facing elimination.
“I was warming up in the bullpen and Billy Martin had called down and wondered how I was throwing.” Lyle recalled, about that day. “And they say, ‘He couldn’t get his grandmother out.’ So Billy asked me how I was feeling and I said I feel fine. ‘Well,’ he says, ‘They said you couldn’t get your grandmother out,’ and I say, ‘Well, I’m not facing her.’”
Lyle credits his stamina to his one-pitch arsenal. Mariano Rivera had his cutter. Sparky had his slider.
“Back when I pitched a lot of innings in a row, I never tried to overthrow,” he said. “I just went out there with what I had and made sure I made the pitch. You hear people tell you all the time, it’s not how hard, it’s where.”
It would be great if the Yanks cited both these friends at the same time. For now, Lyle’s jersey No. 28 will be retired by the Somerset (N.J.) Patriots on June 14, honoring his outstanding managing stint with the minor league club. Lyle won five Atlantic League pennants in Bridgewater, after owner Steve Kalafer sold him a truck and offered him the managerial post.
Lyle, now manager emeritus with the Patriots, is thrilled with the honor. He’s heard nothing yet, though, from the Yanks. Lyle is patient and gracious, as he was when George Steinbrenner acquired Gossage for more than $1 million per season right after Lyle won the Cy Young.
“Goose didn’t know what to say to me,” Lyle said. “I told him, ‘Goose, if I was in the front office and you were available, I’d have got you myself.’ Only thing I thought was, they really should have traded me first, or in spring training.”
Sparky now figures the Yanks are doing this for Gossage, not for him, because Goose is a Hall of Famer. He isn’t complaining, but the thought of a dual celebration tickles his sense of history.
“It would be nice,” Lyle said.
