There's no reason to tip people that are getting paid for the work they do.

not really, I'm sure it's good in CR. In my state, and most of the US... $10/hour taxed won't get you far :

$400 a week, don't plan on having a car... maybe a place to live with 3 roommates, and a bicycle.

Are you shitting me? I understand not being able smoke the Dank and drink Henessey at the stripbar on that budget but otherwise sounds like bad money management if you are barely scraping by. Im from Missouri originally but havent lived there in awhile, but assume that you could live alright there for that amount.

No need to tip a landscaper unless you want to throw them something around the holidays.

chicks are nuts Harrington, especially wives. My wife tips valets both when they take and bring our car, drives me f*ing nuts. Her "logic" is that if you tip the guy that brings the car the guy that takes it doesn't get tipped, conveniently disregarding that all tips go in a jar and are split.

She called a friend and me lazy and cheap when I got a caddy for a round of golf and she found out our total outlay for it was "only" $200.

I don't know Mizz-ur-ah in particular, but I've been through there.

I doubt a single man could presently rent a studio apt, and have a beater insured car on $10/hour in St Louis.

I don't know the town, but this appears to be a shitty apt in SL, for $375

I doubt you have a car and this on $10/hour.

Nes: Fed minimum wage is:

<table border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0" width="153"><tbody><tr><td> 07/24/2007</td> <td>$5.85</td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#f5f5f5"> 07/24/2008</td> <td bgcolor="#f5f5f5"> $6.55</td> </tr> <tr> <td> 07/24/2009</td> <td>$7.25</td></tr></tbody></table>

You aren't usually able to live on that ( soon to be $6.55), at least w/o shared housing, forget a car !

$10/hour ( even cash) is far from good.

Then educate yourself and get paid more. It's really that easy.

I agree with NES, $400 is fine if you aren't looking to pay off a morgage and fine with living in an apartment or sharing.

Then educate yourself and get paid more. It's really that easy.

No, it's not.

He never said it was good, he said you can live ok, which you can. If you can't accept this then you don't truly know what it is to live poorly.

You don't pay much tax on $10/hour, unless the US tax structure is horribly unfair. $20 is definitely doing ok, and many, many, many, many people do ok on that or less.

You can afford a car, just not an expensive one.

Yep... As long as you educate yourself in a field that has high demand. Accounting and MIS degree paying 60-80k a year with no experience out of University of MD College park... More jobs then people right now...

$20k is poverty in most areas of the US. Sure you can afford a shitty apartment and crappy old car, but little else, and couldn't save anything. You will work until the day you die at that income level. FWIW, you don't pay any taxes if you make that kind of money, you actually get EIT Credits and the govt pays you money for making so little.

I think In-N-Out starts at about $10/hour, that should tell you something.

Its what i do, errrrr did, now im the Boss :Carcajada:
My nephews do most of the spring and fall clean ups, and dont expect any tips, and if they do its a bonus, (the people that do tip, i would think get a little better service from the boys) they would be happy to get a Gatorade.

I look at it this way: If you tip them say 10$ each or even throw them a case of Blue when their done your gonna get above and beyond service. Truth be told; in todays day and age manual laborer's or any commericial proffession people do just enough to get the job done. If you throw them an extra bone they will look out for you.

Harry, enjoying the rain? I'am, just replanted about 50% of my lawn 2 weeks ago, need all the rain I can get.

I am in the green proffesion p/t and can tell you that tipping is very rare (I've never got one), nor is it expected by any landscaper I know.

You get what you give. Make sure and increase the number and percentage of tips you give to others and I promise you your own reception of tips will increase.

I am given cash tips on about half of my "general labor" jobs (accounts that are not ongoing repeat maintenance jobs).

Rates range from 20 to 50%

My average GL job is about $150 for five hours and it's not unusual to get people paying $200

I think it's partially helpful that I do almost all my work by myself so the end "effort" is more impressive than if the same work was done by two, three or more people.

If I've heard it once, I've heard it hundreds of times in past 20 years - "Wow, you did a great job and you really work hard".

Which I kinda do, though not near as hard as I used to ten years ago since I've learned a lot of time savers and I use better tools today.

But after three, four, five hours when their place is all shaped up and there's like 50 bags of leaves/trimmings piled out front for sanitation pickup, they're very cool about adding a nice tip.

Back on Topic....Ya never know that maybe Mrs Harrington took one or more of the 'scapers down in the basement for a tip and then lied about it to the kids.

I also pay for the person behind me in line at the toll booth. It's just something nice to do for someone.
That's funny, I usually tell the toll booth collector that they car behind me got my toll, and proceed on.

Not to brag or act like I am rich or anything like that because I am not but when I lived in the states I basically tipped (toked is the term used in Vegas) just about anyone who did me a service, some only around Christmas but still they were toked.

Including but not limited to Pool men, yard men, part time house keepers, car detailer, mailman, Sparkletts man, Orkin Man, chimney sweeps, paper boy, etc.

Here in Costa Rica things are a little different. I definitely tip my building secruity man around Xmas. My wife handles the rest.

wil..
