This is the very reason I wont own a dog.
I love dogs. But 7 or 8 years is just long enough to get you totally attached like its a human being then have to go through a day like you had today.

I can understand that, but you are denying yourself 10-12 (not 7 or 8) years of companionship and unconditional love.

When my ex and I got a puppy, I was already thinking ahead to the time when we would have to put him down. Four years later we split up and I let her keep the dog. It's been 2 years now, and I think about and miss the dog much more than my ex. :(

Sad to hear this Seymour...

I think Any pet lover has been through this, even for us cat owners.
I've gone through this with my 2 dogs and now 3 Cats. and each time it's like losing a Family member.

We have a couple of cats now, and one is Very Special to me. He's like a sidekick
different from most cats that just want to be left alone.
He follows me around the house, lays down on the sofa with me and goes to sleep with me. ( he almost like a Dog )

My Wife says when he goes, I will take it worst than when it's Her time.
She's probably Right ! lol

Anyway, like I said. These pets are Family and it's always sad to lose a Family member.

I Always tell someone that has lost a pet, to check out the site Rainbow Bridge

Here is their poem

[SIZE=+1]Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Bas, My vet sent me that poem after we had to put our Golden Retriever down, i have it in a picture frame along with a picture of our pet & that poem sitting on my desk.

Your dog looks just like my Gypsy who I lost just two years ago! I know it's a tough loss when you lose one of your family. Fortunately, I still have 5 of her pups and her husband! But I'd sure like to have her back! Sorry for your loss!

I love boxers. They have a short time span. 7 or 8 years max.

I had 2 of them. They were both awesome.

And yes, the day I got both of them I was already thinking about 7 or 8 years down the road.

After the last one died 8 years ago I said never again.

If they had an 80 year lifespan I would probably own 10 of them.

Boxers are my favorite breed! When I was growing up, my grandparents always had a boxer named Babe. When one died they would get another within a week and give it the same name. I must have grown up with 4 different boxers named Babe. Awesome dogs.

My aunt had an all white boxer named Princess Diana (roll eyes) for over ten years. Toward the end of the dogs life, she couldn't use her back legs and was in a lot of pain. She drug herself around for several months and we had to beg my aunt to euthanize her. It took her 6 years before she could bring herself to get another dog.

I own a couple of dogs myself and recently put down a chihuahua that originally belonged to my grandmother that raised me. She passed in 04 so the chihuahua was kind of the last link I had to her. Really sad stuff. Seymour I'm sorry for your loss.

This is some depressing shit, if Sara Mclachlan was playing in the background 3 people would have already offed themselves.

Sorry for your loss, the loyalty, companionship and unconditional love can't be replaced from such a special buddy that doesn't judge you on whatever happens in life.

i am sorry for your loss. I too, have no kids and lost my dog about 7 months ago. It was awful, just awful -- definitely one of the hardest things I have gone through. I got a new dog a couple months later. It has helped some, but it is still very hard.

Dogs truly are man's best friend. Like many of you I considered mine family, my best buddy who was always there when I needed him. My best friend died in my arms and yes, I cried all day and still get emotional when I remember that day...sniff...gotta go.
